Something I left out in the video: I only got around ~300 hours of shadowing experience TOTAL. It's a big myth that you need thousands of hours of experience to get accepted. Don't let the Student Doctor Network fool you 👌🏻
I thought that you were finished with veterinary school because in your other recent video, you posted that you got your final results and you were going to graduate soon. Are you doing your residency or are you in grad school working on a Master's or PhD?
I got about 50 (not a typo! Fifty!) hours of shadowing experience TOTAL. And I still got in, somehow! (My school requires that you have experience but not a specific number of hours.)
WHAT? If you don’t mind, what was your gpa? Btw I don’t mean to be rude but it’s just that all the people I know who got in did so with 2000+ hours and so I’m kinda stressing out but hearing that just was a little surprising
@@paylin3787 I know you're probably asking Andrew and not me but if it helps you at all, my GPA was 3.8 and I had about 200 hours at a wildlife rehab center (but there was NO veterinarian there so that doesn't count as vet experience) and 50 hours shadowing at a clinic. It all really depends on the school and on how good the other applicants are that year! If I can do it you can too. :)
Hello, I also got into 3 veterinary schools currently (still waiting to hear back from one more) but I had a low amount of veterinary hours as well. When I calculated my hours, it was just aboce 250. My gpa when I applied was a 3.74, and I had thousands of hours of animal experience. Like Andrew mentioned, it doesn't matter the quantity, but more so the quality of your experience. I did many things out of veterinary medicine that I put on my applications, and made me stand out. So don't focus on the hours, just be as diverse as possible with your applicaiton. @@paylin3787
Don't do what I did and spend so much time trying to get experience in undergrad that you don't have enough time for your classes. It is SO much easier to get experience after you graduate than to try and bring up a lower GPA! As Andrew said, most vets are very nice and all vets were in the same position you were in one day. The worst thing they can say is no, in which case, move along!
Yea during high school, i was so shy and everything but realized i had to get some kind of vet experience at least. So i went to two nearby clinics with a cover letter. Never got a reply. I was so sad and thought it was the end of the world. But i didnt give up. So i went to other 13 vet clinics with like a total 3 hr drive. Sometimes i got rejected right away, but i was already too hurt in the beginning so i was like whatever i still had several more to go. A few days later i finally got a reply from two clinics and now i am still shadowing since summer and have 100+ hrs already and im thankful that I am having this experience bc it rly confirmed that i wanted to get into this difficult path.
May I know roughly what you wrote in your cover letter? Did you have any work experience? I am in my final year of high school and I have no work experience at all... Not sure what I should write.
Rhiannn :3 i could possibly send you my sample cover letter if you could provide ur email or anything so that I can share. I had prior experience with cat adoption volunteering, however, I doubt it’s a big deal when you are asking for shadowing.
The whole idea of becoming a vet terrifies me. It's a huge challenge to undertake, and often times I don't feel like I will ever be good enough to do it. Idk though something about your attitude makes everything seem a lot less scary and overwhelming. Thank you :)
It is totally natural to feel that way.Its something new for you .But you need to know this: Everything seems scary at fist ,but with experience and hard work you can do this . Brush of those thoughts . Know what you want ,and chase it without looking back. As humans we like being comfortable ,but in order to make it.Make decisions that make you uncomfortable!!!
I totally assumed you had bazillions of vet hours even before college or something. I have a similar story and didn't start shadowing until after freshmen year and kinda just walked in to a clinic and was like "Can I shadow?" and boom got hours now. Keep up the inspiring videos!
Thank you so much for making this video! I’m a senior in high school and I currently work at a vet clinic, but I feel like I’m not making connections with any of the doctors there. I’ve felt super discouraged but this really makes me feel hopeful.
Thanks for making this video! I didn't know if I was even able to shadow as a student in high school or even how to ask if I could shadow at a vet clinic. Love your channel, I like your energy and the topics you discuss really helps out people who want to become a vet one day. Keep up the great work because your channel is definitely going places!
I'm glad that you're back and posting videos! I'm in grade 12 and I have been working at a farm for the past 4 years. I get to help the large animal vets all the time but last week I found out that I got accepted to shadow the local vet! I'm sooo excited and thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks for this advice! I just started high school and I really want to become a vet tech. Although Idk if I could do any hours rn but I’m going to try so I possibly be doing hours during my whole 3 years of school. Thank you so much for mentioning the shy part I’m very shy about talking to anyone 💗 thanks again
Thanks for making this video! I think you're the first person I've seen who hadn't gotten vet experience before graduating highschool and who was also socially shy! This made me feel way better lmao
I just started emailing and calling vet clinics to shadow and even though it’s really scary I hope it pays off, this video helped me get the courage to reach out 😭
In Finland we have this thing kalled TET- practice where you can go as a 14 and 15yr old to work and see what you want become as an adult for 1 week. I went to a vet and i got to shadow and alot of other stuff and it actually helped alot.
I'm currently a freshman at my local community college. I recently had knee surgery so I'm on crutches but you just gave me the confidence to ask a vet near me once I can walk thank you so much
Here in argentina you don't actually need any kind of experience to get in. Which sucks! There are hundreds of new students each year and about 70% realize after the first years that it's just not their thing and it wasn't what they expected. I bet that percentage could be greatly reduced with previous experience in the field. Thankfully my mom works with quite a lot of vets who have their own clinic and they said I can hang out with them whenever i want 🙏🙏 Your videos helped me so much when I was doubting, but I'm starting 3rd year today, so thank you!!
I got a bunch of vet experience when I was younger but life happened & now I need to get some more recent experience. It's a bit intimidating but not being a vet is a much worse fate than being told no. Thanks for the positive thoughts!
I am currently in undergrad school but am wanting to transfer to UGA to get my masters and for vet school once I finish here and honestly your videos are SO helpful! I've been looking everywhere for information on the vet experience so this helps me ALOT. Thank you so much for your videos

I’m shadowing a vet right now but it’s only going to be for a couple of months. I’m so scared to ask for a letter of recommendation since you need one from a vet to apply for vet school. Is it weird asking for one even though I’m only standing there shadowing???
