I too miss when Star Trek was a more personal experience. A social, political and philosophical experience which inspired you to think about the future. Modern Star Trek is not really Star Trek.
I think that is a Star trek that exists mostly in the mind - or if you are generous the odd episode of Season One or two of TOS - as a good portion of the rest of it is bordering on melodrama, soap opera or simple action. The 24th Century stuff - especially season 3 onwards of TNG got a lot less well lets be honest "up itself" and less preachy and became more about the interpersonal relationship - by season 6 that was the entire show. It might be interesting to categorise given episodes by type though and see how it weights out overall. I think the reason it was ever thoughtful at all - as action scenes can take a lot of time to set up sometimes. Personally I like a balance and I wouldn't want 2 episodes that are to similar in theme to be shown back to back.
That's one of the best compliments to give Data, since he has really put a lot of effort to become better at being personable, and Bashir had no idea. Two amazing characters.
Classic "United Federation of Hold My Beer I Got This" moment. An alien device of unknown origin and function found on an alien world: "Let's take it on board a space ship with 1000 people on it, plug it into the main computer and see what it does. What could possibly go wrong?"
I remember a scene where Picard almost let the Enterprise selfdestruct sequence finish, just to know what happens after being vaporized. (Riker saved their asses at the final seconds) They better fall back to chasing money, they get cooked in the head without it...
I assume he already tried it on DS9 but didn't have enough processing power to analyze it. Of course, that only transfers a careless act from the Enterprise to DS9.
You’d make a terrible Starfleet Officer; standard operating procedure is to Do The Thing in the name of science and exploration and then if it turns out bad you just rely on your multiple polymath-level Academy education to fix the problem. Astoundingly, this method actually works, and has worked for like 200-straight years of every Federation ship doing it.
Bashir was always a really interesting character - being modified and enhanced, with super intelligence and such, then meeting data, someone who could have kept up with his own intellect, it must have been exciting and interesting. I wish the two had more scenes together, I am sure they would have made some good episodes.
Bashir was always a really interesting character until the people behind the scenes decided that because TOS had the logical, emotionless Spock and TNG had the android Data, they had to introduce a robot-like character into DS9 just to make it the same. And because they didn't want to introduce an actual new character, they just arbitrarily rewrote Bashir's back story and pretended that he had been genetically engineered all along. It was unimaginative, clumsy, and awful.
It's the Enterprise. Most of their fame comes from the bridge officers being....pretty much the only ones allowed to do anything interesting on the entire ship.
Just like all those times when somebody messages the bridge with one of those "Captain there's something in sickbay/engineering/10forward/jefrystube#8 you really need to see. I am apparently incapable of telling you what it is over the com in even the most vague terms so drop everything you're doing and come down here." announcements. Things that make no sense in the context of a Starship's command structure or common sense but the reasons are immediately obvious when you consider that this is a TV show.
...so Data stops Bashir from testing the gizmo in the ship's sick bay, then invites him to accompany him to engineering where they can analyze it more thoroughly, then Bashir says "I didn't think you'd be so...personable," which Data seems to recognize immediately as a back-handed compliment, which he responds to with a "right this way" gesture. Something about the chemistry in those few seconds of interaction. Two great Star Trek characters meeting and matching wits.
@@2bituser569 I get that they didn’t want to build a new set but One would think on a ship that big there was be special labs isolated from the main computer for these kinds of experiments.

I love this scene! Bashir and Data are two of my favorite Star Trek characters, and their interactions are great. I like that Bashir barely seemed to notice Data's unusual eye/skin color at all, only realizing he was talking to an android once Data told him his name. And Bashir's blatant hero-worship for Data is awesome.
Well to be fair... they see alien lifeforms of all shapes and sizes, so bashir might have assumed it as an alien and that on his home planet that is normal for them to have that kind of unusual eye/skin color.
Amazingly, this IS the meeting of the two shows royal smart persons. In light of what we learn from Bashir in DS9 season 5, he is an exceptionally brilliant Doctor.
I love Bashir. He's like a hyperactive puppy. xD Honestly, I didn't care for him at first, but he really grew on me by the second or third season. He started out as this smug, over-eager know-it-all, but once you looked past that, he was actually a dedicated officer and a sweet, loyal person. And his friendship with O'Brien was great.
To be fair, the first season didn't make him much more than a smug young doctor. His time with Garak and O'Brien did a lot to round out his personality.
A Wesley Crusher copy at the beginning but the writers realized that it wouldn't work. And a good acter making a character better. Wheaton was too young and as inexperienced actor to do the same thing.
@@beauxr.benoit1374 I'd argue that the main difference is that in universe, Bashir "earned" his smugness as well as being taken down a notch every now and then. The issue with Wesley was that he was a kid who was innately better at everything than those who studied to be great at it. Makes viewers feel like losers. And while Bashir was always smarter than your average viewer, he regularly failed (particularly at romance).

Hydrogen bombs, depending on the detonating mechanism can potentially work with plasma. The input would very likely not already be plasma, it would likely be some form of gas state material which will later be in the "plasma state" to compress fuel for fusion to ignite. The other method would strictly not work with plasma at all, in which a fission bomb is set off in order to cause a fusion explosion.
@@Eadweard76Seriously... Deanna Troi meeting Odo & Quark... instead of just Lwaxana? Data meeting Garak & Odo? Sisko meeting counselor Troi? Dr. Crusher & Deanna at the Dabo table just once? Data & Jadzia Dax collaboration on tech from the Gamma Quadrant?
A scene that’s cool in the context of DS9 Season 1 and TNG Season 6, but is even more layered and great once we have that revelation of the true Bashir later on.
Bashir: "Hold my beer. I'm going to find out what this thing that looks kinda like either a bomb or a power core is. There's a small chance it could be a Medical Scanner." Data: "I'm sorry, but there is no beer holding in Sick Bay... Let's take it to Engineering, where we host the Exploratory Keggers, warp core and the main supply of explodium - the main energy source of every console on the ship. Especially on the Bridge and in in the preschool."
They're often the most endearing characters. All they really want is to "be a real boy". Who was it in Enterprise, or was there no such character in that series? I have yet to watch it, I'm halfway through Voyager now. already watched all the others.
Such a good scene. Bashir is underrated in DS9, he's just this naive but loving guy who enjoys his job and sees the best in everyone. Telling how Bashir asks Data questions that not even Geordi or Troi ever thought of.
Watching this after watching the later episodes of Gotham is fantastic. Alexander has aged and grown so much in his acting. In this he's so boyish and young and in Gotham he's so grim, mature, and sinister.
Dauntless3788 Well, he was barely 28yo when this was filmed. But yes, he did have a baby face and look younger than he was...especially when he did that youthful excitement thing.
This thing is pretty incredible when you take him to mind that doctor soon created data to be the answer to Khan. A Genetically Enhanced human being and Julian is also a Genetically Enhanced human being it's kind of like cousins meeting each other in a way.
I loved seeing Bashir then be the main doctor in DS9! And than Zimmerman makes an appearance in DS9 which we all know his EMH becomes the main doctor in Voyager! I love these little nods
"What's it?" "I dunno... some device of past technology by a company called Cyberdyne Systems" "Cool! Let's switch it on and see if we can improve its performance..." (Borgs: *facepalm)
To be honest, Cyberdyne Systems is smarter and have more potential than the borg all things considered, their habit of assimilating and adapting means they do not technically advance in technology.
I like Data's brief confusion at the fact that Bashir thinks he's personable. A very well acted moment by Brent Spiner. Of course pretty much every moment of Spiner on screen was well acted.
There should have been more crossover between TNG and DS9 like Sisko taking command of the Enterprise due to Picard and Riker being held hostage by a hostile force or Picard having a mission with the DS9 crew.
DS9 was located at the furthest end of the Alpha Quadrant while the Enterprise was mostly Alpha Quadrant. The bad blood betwern Picard and Sisko was never truly resolved, and both captains knew it.
@@SantomPh I think they put that behind them in the Return of Sisko Star Trek Books.. I believe it was Picard who helped bring him back? Then again that's technically Non Canon.. BUT if they were planning to do something for S2 of Picard.. Just sayin.. that is of course if Kurtzman doesn't decide to blow up Bajor and Deep Space Nine because that's not Diverse enough..
"The synthetic life form?" proceeded by "It's an honor to meet you, sir" feels so lovely after so many times of people not accepting data fully. Plus, that "sir" to me felt less a formality but more a mark of true respect from on person to another. Love Bashir, and of course love Data.
A minor power drain is off course worthy of Data's direct attention, and of course the Enterprise computers have no way of blocking unauthorized accesses. Or, we could have just had a slightly different scene where Bashir had requested the access but had some technical issues that involved requesting Data's help. Nitpicky, I know, but details are everything.
During Trek's hey day, every current show was used to introduce the new show. TNG introduced DS9 in the above episode (TNG had two seasons left), and DS9 reigned in Voyager. You can also check out the tense scene between Cmdr. Sisko and Picard on TH-cam.
Originally, this was supposed to be a conversation between Data and Jadzia Dax, which would make sense as they are both science officers. Unfortunately, Terry Farrell was unavailable that day. It’s too bad, Data could’ve also ask Dax about what it’s like to have other people’s memories in him as he has other people’s memories, journals as well. (Lal, Omicron Theta victims).
Ironically, it's an augment talking to the ""great great grandson" of the man who helped CREATE augments. From a certain POV, Data and Bashir are cousins. ***CORRECTION***: Arik Soong didn't CREATE augments. He may have initiated the process that Bashir ultimately received AND THEN switched to cybernetics which ultimately produced Data. In addition, Lore could be considered a typical augment and the perfect example of not learning from past mistakes. That would make more sense, continuity wise.
Made more interesting my the Saddig becoming worried that his character would end up as just another Data in DS9 with that plot thread. Yet seeing the two here, I can't help but feel that the two should have played off each other moreover. I mean, they have a different kind of chemistry than Bashir O'Brian or Bashir Garak. I think Bashir is one of the most relatable people for Data and the could have a bit of a brotherly relationship that Data couldn't get from Lore.
After learning at the end of the series that Bashir is in fact a genetically enhanced Human being, it makes the molding of these two characters all that more intriguing.
I could not help but notice Bashir's elbow leaning on the keyboard. Remind's me of Scotty and that clone machine which he tried to talk to in that movie with the whales -"Computer, oh computer".
I *completely* forgot this happened!😂 I've been binging the Hell out of _DS9_ Now I'm gonna have to go back and watch _Birthright, Pt. 1_ for context☺️ Thank you🥰
Well, First Contact was an extension of the TNG experience. After all, it was Picard who was kidnapped by the Borg and the Enterprise crew rescued him. The DS9 crew had their hands full with the Dominion. The producers wanted to keep the two storylines apart.
Chief O'Brien perhaps, since after all he had 'TNG' roots like Worf, however also adding Sisko and Doctor Bashir would have created too many Starfleet characters in the film.
@@Crimson-m9o no it wouldn’t have. Picard and Sisko had history directly stemming from their experience at Wolf 359. O’Brien was a former TNG character. Bashir and Data had clear chemistry in this scene that could have been expanded. Lt. Hawk could have been excluded, Lily too. Then pair off the characters we actually care about and have them work together to build and resolve the drama.
@Isaac Mounce You are mistaken. The OP clearly stated these were her 'two favorite Star Trek Trek dudes'. Therefore, your response holds no validity in overturning that fact. Personal preference is unique to each individual and cannot be invalidated by another person's subjective opinion.
"It would have taken me days to analyze this device with the computer I have on Deep Space Nine." - So how long, Doctor Bashir, would have it taken you to open a comm channel to the Enterprise and say, "Hey, I have this cool looking thing from the Gamma Quadrant that I want analyzed and my computer is too slow, since we're explorers and all and you're docked, mind if I used yours?" instead of sneaking aboard and using their equipment without permission and opening you up to possible court martial charges?
Pretty much. It's not as if there is a lack of security officers aboard when Worf isn't around. Hell, at the very least Data should have been accompanied by two Enterprise security officers in case someone who is NOT the station's CMO snuck aboard the Federation flagship from Deep Space Nine!
Its all to make the plot more interesting. This way we see data and bashir interact, instead of some security officer bitchin at data. I love star trek, but they did that a lot.
How did he get past Enterprise Security? Bashir must have hijacked a Klingon Bird of Prey, flew it cloaked until he was within transporter range of the Enterprise before beeming aboard (very shortly after disengaging the cloaking device, of course). What I find strange though, is that if you're facinated by a field generator and then an android asks you what you're up to, wouldn't you want to put down your pet project and start opening DATA's skull to find out how he works instead?
Dr Bashir was not fascinated by the field generator, just trying to apply the necessary power to determine if the device is a medical unit or not, hence being in sickbay rather than engineering. As to why Dr Bashir was not examining Data's positronic systems.....(to quote another ST physician) he's a DOCTOR not an ENGINEER
And even then, Data's schematics have been thoroughly, if not completely, mapped and written about for those with appropriate security clearance, which Bashir would likely have. The Gamma quadrant tech was entirely new and unknown, a much more immediately interesting puzzle. And as the other guy said, Bashir probably just walked on to the ship. To my knowledge, Starfleet has only ever utilized the "permission to come aboard?" protocol for new crew members first arriving and reporting in for duty. Remember, Enterprise also carries civilians and crew families. It was only when Bashir attempted to access protected ship's systems that flags went up.
He is a starfleet officer and a doctor. Its probably a Starfleet courtesy to allow officers at a Starbase to visit any ships that are docked or in orbit of the planet.
At the time, it wasn't written in that he was genetically enhanced. Apparently that plot point was a last minute addition to add a sense of dread to the episode it was introduced in, and the actor, Alexander Siddig, being the last person to hear about the change, was at first not happy saying that it came right out of nowhere.
I love DS9, but compared to the rest of the staff, Bashir always seemed to fall short for me. He got some character development, and had a turnaround with Miles, but as far as being a character one would remember, like Kira, Odo, or even Garrak, I don't think he shined very brightly.
David Rauschenbach He most probally did, in the movies on the Enterprise E, or when the Enterprise kept docking at Earth in Voyager, he probaly had a look at the EMH, but never the ECH because it doesn't exist in the Alpha or Beta Quadraunt.
David Rauschenbach You know, that doctor from voyager had some of the best character development of anyone I've ever seen in any show. Went from being a personalitiless hologram to a self contained mobile doctor that could be easily confused for a fully functional human.
I love when Bashir initially requests help, Data immediately decides to do it, but then realizes "Wait, no, im supposed to be confronting him!" He is immediately intrigued by this strange device and is eager to see what it does.

"And you are commander..."
"Data"
O.O
I know right? The look on his face is priceless :D
Data: And you are Dr Bashir, I presume?
😄 I HAVE to freeze that moment when I see this scene.
His gorgeous big eyes got even bigger-Like a kid on Christmas!
He activated his awestruck fanboy met a celebrity orgasmic expression.
Classic "United Federation of Hold My Beer I Got This" moment.
An alien device of unknown origin and function found on an alien world:
"Let's take it on board a space ship with 1000 people on it, plug it into the main computer and see what it does. What could possibly go wrong?"
I remember a scene where Picard almost let the Enterprise selfdestruct sequence finish, just to know what happens after being vaporized. (Riker saved their asses at the final seconds)
They better fall back to chasing money, they get cooked in the head without it...
Better yet, let's hook it up to the holodeck! Nothing bad ever happens there!
Seriously, they need a dead desert like world to setup a sector 51 lab to analyze alien tech.
Bashir would have given Data a run for his money in the intellect department.
Or vice versa.
@@omp199 Then you missed the fact that DS9 already had their "emotionless outsider" from the pilot episode; Odo.
@@hweidigiv Odo wasn't like a robot, though.
Why send a bridge officer? They should've sent security. This is exactly why they have them on board.
-- Data likes to get personal, get his feet dirty. =] He is fully functional, after all.
Totally agree. Poor writing and editing.
All the security officers were on shore leave at DS9, using Quark's holosuites so they can practice getting killed.
He stopped Bashir because he didn't have authorization. Data can take the device to engineering for study without the Captain's direct permission.

Wouldn’t a lab be more appropriate than 20 feet from the warp core?

Maybe he wanted to hear him say it.
I guess the Deep Space Nine computers aren't sophisticated enough to display images. Text only.
I don’t think he ever saw a picture of him. Look at the way Bashir reacts when Data tells him who he is.
"Doctor Bashir, I presume?"
Like a kid at Christmas-So Adorable! Yes, I'm totally in love with ALEXANDER SIDDIG, in case you're wondering!
Data starts smiling like a kid after Bashir says "It's an honor to meet you, sir."
Bashir's eyes when he finds out it's data though- this boy
I know, he's so pure 😂💜
I love how data was eager to help for a few seconds before remembering why he came.
Amazingly, this IS the meeting of the two shows royal smart persons. In light of what we learn from Bashir in DS9 season 5, he is an exceptionally brilliant Doctor.
I love Bashir. He's like a hyperactive puppy. xD
Honestly, I didn't care for him at first, but he really grew on me by the second or third season.
His antics and sas in Star Trek Online's victory is life storyline is hilarious. Especially when he even gets to do offhand humor with the Vorta Loris.
It's too bad there weren't more interactions as this in the series. Bashir & Data treated each other with nothing but respect here.
I love that, he ges to help and stops him self like "wait what am I doing?"
I believe Data himself once said that he has the curiosity of humans, but not the emotional connection to go with it.
"Go down there and see what's going on. There aren't any security cameras or microphones on this ship... because... plot armor."

Galen Marek H-bombs don't take plasma input
Hydrogen bombs, depending on the detonating mechanism can potentially work with plasma.
The input would very likely not already be plasma, it would likely be some form of gas state material which will later be in the "plasma state" to compress fuel for fusion to ignite.
The other method would strictly not work with plasma at all, in which a fission bomb is set off in order to cause a fusion explosion.

wish there where more cross overs between DS9 and Next Gen. Would've loved to see more interaction like this :)
A scene that’s cool in the context of DS9 Season 1 and TNG Season 6, but is even more layered and great once we have that revelation of the true Bashir later on.
Bashir: "Hold my beer. I'm going to find out what this thing that looks kinda like either a bomb or a power core is. There's a small chance it could be a Medical Scanner."
Data: "I'm sorry, but there is no beer holding in Sick Bay... Let's take it to Engineering, where we host the Exploratory Keggers, warp core and the main supply of explodium - the main energy source of every console on the ship. Especially on the Bridge and in in the preschool."
In TNG it is Data, in DS9 Odo and Voyager the EMH. They have a fondness for non-human-trying-to-be-human characters.
Every series needs their own Spock.
They're often the most endearing characters. All they really want is to "be a real boy". Who was it in Enterprise, or was there no such character in that series? I have yet to watch it, I'm halfway through Voyager now. already watched all the others.
...its the old 'Pinnochio Syndrome'.
Katarina S. (Sarcasm) In _Enterprise_ , they flipped the script and had a real boy trying to be a man, whozis playing Captain Archer.
Burnham in Discovery...
I had no idea this actually happened.
Data: Don't worry, I was annoying in the early seasons of my show as well. It will pass.
But IMO Wesley was far more annoying :-)
Wesley is adorable! Why all the hate on him?!
The best part is that most of Bashir being annoying was just him trying to act dumber and more affable to conceal his genetic engineering.
Wonder Bunny I love Wesley!
When was Data annoying? It's been a while, but I remember him being one of the more entertaining characters.
Bashir and Data are so fantastic. I wouldn’t have minded more of them together.
I see a lot of Stan Laurel in Brent Spiner's facial expressions when he's acting as Data. Simply brilliant.
Baltar at a young age. No blonde chick though...
Man, those two really do look similar.
I love these little nods
so this was season 6. and DS9, delta quadrant, and so forth had been mentioned. impressive.
"What's it?"
"I dunno... some device of past technology by a company called Cyberdyne Systems"
"Cool! Let's switch it on and see if we can improve its performance..."
(Borgs: *facepalm)
To be honest, Cyberdyne Systems is smarter and have more potential than the borg all things considered, their habit of assimilating and adapting means they do not technically advance in technology.
I like Data's brief confusion at the fact that Bashir thinks he's personable. A very well acted moment by Brent Spiner. Of course pretty much every moment of Spiner on screen was well acted.
There should have been more crossover between TNG and DS9 like Sisko taking command of the Enterprise due to Picard and Riker being held hostage by a hostile force or Picard having a mission with the DS9 crew.
I don't even know what Sisko would do with himself if he ever got command of a Galaxy class starship...hed probably be giddy....would be fun to watch.
Yes, it would have been storytelling gold.
TNG crew were filming the movies in the 90s... So maybe that's the reason why they didn't appear much on DS9
I love these kind of crossovers. Wish they'd done a few more of them.
"The synthetic life form?" proceeded by "It's an honor to meet you, sir" feels so lovely after so many times of people not accepting data fully. Plus, that "sir" to me felt less a formality but more a mark of true respect from on person to another. Love Bashir, and of course love Data.
crossover moments are arguably the best parts of any series/movies. even youtube ones
Had no idea he was on this show! Also it's priceless the way data almost helps him in lieu of his orders.
During Trek's hey day, every current show was used to introduce the new show. TNG introduced DS9 in the above episode (TNG had two seasons left), and DS9 reigned in Voyager. You can also check out the tense scene between Cmdr. Sisko and Picard on TH-cam.
Yeah, like he's about to help him, then stops him self thinking "What am I doing?"
Bashir used the most nefarious most successful method of manipulating Data: politely asking
@@explodingplant2 How true, I find that is also helpful with today's AI.
I love Data's little "after you" wave of the hand at the end. He is EVER so personable :)
This makes me wish we see Bashir in Picard. Would love to see him help find out more on synthetic humans and Data.
They'd just murder him in some gruesome way, while spouting expletives.
I’ve only known Julian for 2 minutes and I love him already. 🥺💕
The best place to work on a potentially dangerous machine is obviously near an antimatter reactor!
After learning at the end of the series that Bashir is in fact a genetically enhanced Human being, it makes the molding of these two characters all that more intriguing.
Two products of two different Noonien Soongs...cool.
Actually... one is Noonien SINGH, not Soong.
Bashir doesn't refer to Data in the third person, as an object, or prod and poke him, he's just respectful and glad to meet him.
I could not help but notice Bashir's elbow leaning on the keyboard. Remind's me of Scotty and that clone machine which he tried to talk to in that movie with the whales -"Computer, oh computer".

Instead of contacting a local security guard, we better send one of our command crew from half way across the ship.
Permission? Permission? No time for that! This is for SCIENCE! MUWAHAHAHA!!! The madness of Dr. Bashir...
I don't know why, but this is exactly what I needed today.
1:06 it’s a crime the Bashir was left out of First Contact. Sisko, Bashir, and O’Brien should have been on the Defiant with Worf.
Agreed. It made no sense to me that the Defiant would go into a major battle against the borg without DS9's senior staff.

"It would have taken me days to analyze this device with the computer I have on Deep Space Nine." - So how long, Doctor Bashir, would have it taken you to open a comm channel to the Enterprise and say, "Hey, I have this cool looking thing from the Gamma Quadrant that I want analyzed and my computer is too slow, since we're explorers and all and you're docked, mind if I used yours?" instead of sneaking aboard and using their equipment without permission and opening you up to possible court martial charges?
lol Or, why does data go to see who is in Sickbay? Isnt that the job of security?
Pretty much. It's not as if there is a lack of security officers aboard when Worf isn't around. Hell, at the very least Data should have been accompanied by two Enterprise security officers in case someone who is NOT the station's CMO snuck aboard the Federation flagship from Deep Space Nine!
Its all to make the plot more interesting. This way we see data and bashir interact, instead of some security officer bitchin at data.
I love star trek, but they did that a lot.
There are other ways that retain interest. Having a couple of extras would not have ruined the scene in the slightest.
Excessively horrible, since the Enterprise is docked with Deep Space Nine in this episode!
Soooo you seeing anyone?

I like how at the end Data just fucks off from his duties to play with a new toy...
Bashir : You're Data?
Data : Yes. What was your first clue?
I wished they had a bit more screen together. Having them discuss matters of science, bioengeneering and stuff.
So do I, allthough... their conversation's mannerism was a bit awkward.
Well, they did in the engineering, not just this in sickbay.
I think Bashir came in his pants when he found our he was talking to Data
Archangel Tigerstorm totally ;)
How did he get past Enterprise Security? Bashir must have hijacked a Klingon Bird of Prey, flew it cloaked until he was within transporter range of the Enterprise before beeming aboard (very shortly after disengaging the cloaking device, of course).
What I find strange though, is that if you're facinated by a field generator and then an android asks you what you're up to, wouldn't you want to put down your pet project and start opening DATA's skull to find out how he works instead?
The ship was docked at DS9. He probably just walked through the docking port

Two worlds are colliding when TNG's favorite android meets with DS9's genetically enhanced medical doctor :-).
What if Data met the holographic doctor from Voyager?
