One thing I’ve appreciated about Wizards design is putting more powerful pieces in the lower rarity slots. Only one of the discussed cards was a rare, for example. There will always be some breakout rares/mythocs, but it’s good to know that you can get some great standard/pioneer pieces for cheap
It seems like they've been pushing there to be more mythics and rare in standard sets that only really matter in Commander. With those being the chase cards, it allows the staples printed for standard and even some pioneer decks to be at lower rarity.
There’s like 10 formats others than commander. Just commander has become the most popular. My play group and I. Started with standard. Tried getting into modern then fell into commander because it was most accessible for all of us.
commander as a format did not exist(as a thing wizards of the coast supported) until 2011. thats 13 years of uptime, and it wasnt even called commander until 2011
Assemble the Players is something I'd LOVE in my collection. I adore creature-based decks, especially white creature decks decks. My recent love is a Innistrad-based soldier deck.
I think Insidious roots might also see a lot of play in a Jund sacrifice deck. Having it with the cat combo can allow you to get big plants whilst also ramping.
I love these videos that show me what's good in other formats than just commander. It's interesting and a good watch. Also a good watch will be the video that shows us how you and your team makes videos. Can't wait.
Thank you, Prof. I haven't bothered with 60-constructed since Aether Revolt, and this video really put pioneer into a new light for me. Might have to BUY SINGLES and make a deck or two to try out at my LGS.
@13:44 The cavalier way WotC's Kathleen De Vere plunders Raymond Chandler's "The High Window" in her text message is not lost on classic mystery novel readers.
With the detective combo, you also have the option of back up lines if you go Jund, using stuff like Reckless Fireweaver (getting around not being able to attack or such), and Quicksmith Genius, which lets you draw your deck!!
Kinda surprised by the absence of Long Goodbye, though I suppose it’s better in older formats where countermagic is more powerful. Loving how sweet so many of the uncommons in MKM are. The common/uncommon quantity in sets changed with Play Boosters (so, 20 fewer commons and 20 more uncommons in Karlov Manor compared to standard sets before it), and clearly they’re having fun finding cool designs to squeeze into those extra slots.
I've had U/W spirits sitting around, collecting dust as I don't play Modern these days. I've held off converting it into a Pioneer deck since I couldn't run Aether Vial anymore, but Assemble the Players makes me want to shift over.
maybe it's more of a modern card but I feel like delney maybe deserves a mention as one of if not the best panharmonican to date. Not sure off the top of my head pioneer's best hits with delney are but extra bowmaster and monkey triggers seem fun in modern. I'm sure there's a solid pioneer list too though especially a coco list with like skyclave apparition and maybe spirited companion. I'm definitely higher on it than chalk outline anyway
Forensic Gadgeteer is another new card that offers great combo potential. The simplest one is probably with Basalt Monolith, netting you infinite colorless mana. It is the only card that comes close to Power Artifact. Unfortunately, it doesn't work with Grim Monolith or Mana Vault, as their activation cost is one too high. But there is another nice combo: Nuka Cola Vending Machine + Academy Manufactor + Forensic Gadgeteer + Crime Novelist (if you add Reckless Fireweaver, you can kill the whole table at the same time, if you add an Amulet of Vigor, you can draw as many cards as you want). It's a lot of assembling work though.
I don't play Pioneer, but I'm really excited to play Assemble the Players in my new Duskana deck (which lets it cast, well, ALL the creatures from that deck).
Not just Rakdos Sacrifice. There's actually a lot of artifact sacrificing going on in the form of artifact tokens across many decks. Treasures from Prosperous Innkeeper, Fable of the Mirror Breaker’s token, Treasure Vault, Reckoner Bankbuster, etc. Food from Gilded Goose Blood from Voldaren Epicure Clues from Thraben/Novice Inspector, your Fateful Absence, and whatever else gets played from this set. Map tokens from Restless Anchorage, Sentinel of the Nameless City, and your Get Lost Hell, even just Haywire Mite, Tormod’s Crypt, etc.
I think [[Fugitive Codebreaker]] is being slept on. A two mana card that is basically Monastery Swiftspear is still powerful, especially one with a secondary mode that can draw refill your hand in the late game. Definitely going to be trying it out in Boros Prowess/Heroic, even if just as a sideboard card.
I always love when Azorius control is on the menu (I'm a sadist, I know). Might actually give pioneer a go. The Outline in Chalk combo has me excited for *casual* Gitrog EDH. The cEDH gitrog list probably isn't interested, but it's neat.
I love when The Professor does videos talking about Pioneer or Standard.... It is like when Christopher Nolan talks about how all movies should be shot on film stock. A skilled and beloved figure ranting about something very few people care about in a way that is only half a step away from shouting at clouds.... But in an endearing way.
The way you brought up Get Lost and No More Lies in the Assemble the Players section of the video made it sound like you could cast those cards with Assemble’s ability, which you can’t. They aren’t creature spells.
As a Phoenix player. You don’t hard cast Phoenix. You use chart the course or the lighting axe to discard it from your hand. I’ve only ever hard casted out of desperation.
“Azorius control is finally, say it with me now, back on the menu in Pioneer.” ??? Sorry to piss on your bonfire Prof (and everyone who hates playing against us), but WE NEVER LEFT. Long Live Control 😈
There's probably a way to break Deadly Cover-Up (land destruction and exiling all their lands from their deck), or use Outrageous Robbery to steal the opponents entire deck (guessing with some infinite mana combo)
That once per turn is really keeping assemble the players in check lol. Imagine your opponent playing that turn 2 and grabbing three one drops off the top 😂
I feel like someone is going to do SOMETHING with Reenact the Crime, I'm just not sure what yet. Obviously you don't get to cheat Emrakul, the Aeons Torn into play in Pioneer, but you still have your pick of Atraxa, Ulamog, Emrakul the Promised End, and Omniscience to cheat out with it, so you still have plenty of options.
Azorious Control has been a powerhouse in Pioneer since LCI (and arguably longer but players didn't realize yet), what are you talking about "finally back on the menu"??
The best Thing on the crime novelist IS thats a Goblin. So i could run the combo in my Goblin deck with pashalik mons, boggart shenanigans and Goblin bombardement 😂
Is the thicc black book with the magenta decorative bit under the title on your bookshelf, "The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations," potentially the third edition?
No, but that red goblin uncommon that makes a red mana when you sac an artifact is F***ing busted and is birgi level power that will be a cedh staple as well as a casual table nightmare (hence not casual; if something is spike it is inherently not casual)

The constant switching between "Karlov" and "Markov" had me giggling, but then the random "Murktide" got me cackling. Never change, Prof!
I still do that. Was totally confused why Aurelia was on Innistrad initially lmao.
Probably a nod to Collect Evidence.
I lost it at Murktide as well. Pure gold.
NML, the acronym for No More Lies, also happens to stand for Not Mana Leak
Or New Mana Leak
This is both genius and funny. I love this

That's a recent return to an old design standpoint.
Before mythic rarity, commons and uncommons were often your staple cards in magic.
I wish they were all common so they could come to pauper!
It seems like they've been pushing there to be more mythics and rare in standard sets that only really matter in Commander. With those being the chase cards, it allows the staples printed for standard and even some pioneer decks to be at lower rarity.
@@AlastairGamesUnfortunately the design change of Play Boosters mean that Pauper is going to be getting less cards with every set...

I've been playing magic for 16-17 years and this video taught me there's a format other than commander. Terrifying.

Be honest with us Professor, how many times did you say Markov instead of Karlov during the recording?

thank you for making videos about pioneer, i think it's easily the best format right now and love to see anything that'll help get more people into it
I love these videos that show me what's good in other formats than just commander. It's interesting and a good watch. Also a good watch will be the video that shows us how you and your team makes videos. Can't wait.
Fell into the Markov Manor trap, happens to the best of us
EDIT: Oh I understand now😂
i've messed up that name probably a dozen times

Really glad you do Pioneer content! It's honestly the best format in the game right now, in my opinion.

oh soulherder and risen reef also seem fun
this video covered where I last left off in mtg, '11-'12. Miss that set. Thanks for this.
Thanks for the Pioneer content!!
For the crime novelist combo, we have Atog in Pioneer. It's just called Ravenous Intruder. Seems like a great option for the combo
I am so glad you put the non-clickbait title after the clickbait title.

Vengeful Tracker seems like a strong tech card to shut down the rakdos sacrifice, or any sacrifice loop. A good sideboard card imo.

Well, I guess im going back into the azorius control labs, this is my deck lol. Really nice add.
I got such a good laugh from the "Ask your parents line" about Standard. Fantastic :)
As a Phoenix player. You don’t hard cast Phoenix. You use chart the course or the lighting axe to discard it from your hand. I’ve only ever hard casted out of desperation.
Sir, UW control won the RC. It's definitely tier 1 in Pioneer.
My favourite thing about the Professor is how he never has once altered the cadence of the way he says Magic: The Gathering
I kind of hate the fact that the biggest card for pauper from this set is just Thraben Inspector part two.
“Azorius control is finally, say it with me now, back on the menu in Pioneer.”

Make disappear is a slightly weaker mama leak, but can be copied. So I personally love that caverns was brought back in 🎉
There's probably a way to break Deadly Cover-Up (land destruction and exiling all their lands from their deck), or use Outrageous Robbery to steal the opponents entire deck (guessing with some infinite mana combo)
I think No More Lies has potential in other formats like Modern and EDH since both formats still run graveyard focused decks.
He did the meme from that show i like. So hip, so cool. ❤❤❤
Thanks for using the original Alpha art when comparing Lightning Bolt and Healing Salve to Lightning Helix.
Nice pick for #1. Would work well with x power cards too.
Standard on the rise again its best it been in years. The rcqs are helping to bringing it back.
Ghostly pilferer 1u lets you discard a card at instant speed for no mana

Totally not imagining prof in some kind of fantastic onesie due to the undi advert in this episode....
I like No more Lies. Now if only Wizards would stop telling no more lies. There are some good combos. Thank you for the video Professor.
I still think there should have been a card named "Overwhelming Evidence". I'm quite surprised about that missed opportunity.
Hey Professor would Insidious Roots, Chalk Outline, Witch's Oven, and Cauldron Familiar make for a good starting point for a deck in pioneer?
