Hi Ina. So sad to see what happened to this plant, but an interesting lesson for us all. It’s strange though that the rot had not yet gone up into the stem because it is still green but certainly severely weakened it. Thanks so much for sharing your experience with us.

I noticed the leaves were very pale and dehydrated. I didn't apply any pressure, I was surprised how it just fell apart :(

I had this same thing happen recently. Thanks for sharing - I couldn’t figure out why it happened. Now I understand.

So sorry you lost that orchid but it was a great lesson for we - inexperienced novices who have had similar experiences, didn't know what caused the problem & just blamed ourselves.

Don't blame yourself. There are so many orchids that have underlying issues that we are not aware of. I am glad the video helped

I have an incredibly similar looking, probably exactly the same Phalaenopsis hybrid - a grocery store had a glorious idea to sell orchids covered in sequins for Valetin's day, so I decided to rescue the tiny plant.
I observed the same traits: buds get very easily blasted if touched by cold air, lower leaves yellowed prematurely, all while maintaining a beautiful strong root system.
The only difference: mine stayed in one piece and was the one that introduced mealy bugs into my humble orchid collection 😬
I deem it a very low quality hybrid, was probably dirt cheap in bulk.
Please don't be sad about accidentally breaking the stem, not worth it in case of this hybrid, IMHO.

I should have clarified that mine is still alive and kicking (and in bloom), but just not nearly as attractive and resilient as other Phals I own.

I am glad yours is still around. I will take it into account if I ever find the same hybrid again. Thanks for sharing
