Just... wow! Your ability to bring those rocks and that water alive with the powers of your observation, your patience in layering on the paint and your masterful colour-mixing abilities boggles my pea brain! Beautiful work, sir; beautiful work.
Wonderful painting Joe. So much to learn from watching you paint: mixing your colours, brush strokes and now even candle wax! That large rock is just amazing. Your tree reflections wow! Thank you so much for sharing your skills and your way of helping us to see what is possible with watercolour.
I have always thought about doing this exact kind of painting!! Tree reflections and all! I just never even tried because I didn't know where to start. Thank you for your amazing tutelage! Much appreciated ❤😊
tHANKS FOR THE GREAT VIDEOS JOE.... Ive been doing watercolours for about 3 years and do it to relax and relly enjoy it. so good to see your videos and pick up some tips. keep up the good work my friend
Ironically I was afraid of water reflections, this way i always was paiting the human body with watercolor, with this master class i will be more confident with the water using watercolor, thank you!!
Joey. It’s fantastic painting. You provided the tips of rocks painting, and always kindly gave detail explanations on every steps. It’s really Helpful . Thanks for video.
Perfect timing! Who knew rocks were so hard, pun intended. My sketchbook is currently depicting my attempts from your previous video. Just cleaned my pallet for today's sessions. Thanks so much!!
I've recently found your page. I am new to watercolor and many of your videos have cleared up some confusion I've had on different aspects of watercolor. Soon I will join your patreon.
Beautiful tutorial! I've never tried laying in the shadows first and then glazing water over them before. I can't wait to try this! I also love your practice of squeezing out the paint from your brush rather than just wiping or rinsing. That blended color is precious, so why waste? Thanks so much for both of these tips!
First time I've seen one of your vids, and I thought everything about it was terrific. Really succinct narrative that seemed to anticipate everything I would ask you, excellent editing, and the painting skill is obviously wonderful. New subscriber here, and I'll check out your Patreon as well. I do have one quick question for you (that may seem rather lame), but do you recall any details about that metal palette you're using? I have been looking for something very similar to that. Thank you again. I'll be back........!
Welcome. Very happy to have you as a new subscriber. The palette is plastic and was designed by me and printed on a 3D printer, I also have to specially seal the mixing areas to minimise staining. I do sell them to my students and anyone interested. The price is $60 Australian plus postage from Australia. :-)
Beautiful painting and demonstration! Where did you get your watercolour palettes please? You have a place for lots of paints and 4 rather large areas to blend which is wonderful!!!
Thank you. The palette was designed my me and printed on my 3D printer. The mixing surfaces had to be sealed with a special epoxy to reduce staining. I sell them to my students for $60 Australian plus postage.
It sure looks extremely convenient and was very creative on your part to be able to fill all the boxes. It’s always exceptional to be able to design what you need and make life easier. I’m guessing it costs from $45 up to $50 US dollars. It’s probably best to order one, so then I’ll keep in touch. I guess after a while it might start to stain a bit, is there anything that can be done about that? Thank you for the information, and I really do like it. Those rocks and the painting are outstanding!!!
Hi joe, thank you so much for sharing this video. I truly enjoyed your technique and details. I don’t know much about painting. What was the purpose of adding the salt on the rock?
Hi Joe, excellent tutorial! Your palette is different from all that I have seen. It’s very functional. What is the brand name and where can I buy it from? Thanks !
Glad you enjoyed the video. The palette I use was designed and produced by myself on my 3D printer. I wanted a palette with large mixing areas and that I could use in both my studio and when I go out plein air painting. I sell them to my students for $60 Australian, plus postage.
I just discovered your video and am fairly new to watercolor painting. I wanted to ask why you wet the back of the paper, and the plastic board underneath...does that keep the paper damp while painting? I have trouble keeping my paper from drying out when doing the wet-on-wet technique, and think this may help if that's your reason for doing it.
Yes, exactly. Here is a video I made which explains the process and the reason why I wet the back of my paper: th-cam.com/video/f3SlN7jfxRw/w-d-xo.html
Yes, it is a panting for the more experienced, but still worth trying as that is how you get experience! I have painted this scene twice, my second attempt (this one) worked out better because I learned something from my first attempt. Thank you for watching!

Excellent! I usually scrape with a plastic card when painting rocks but I will definitely try this.

Hi joe, thank you so much for sharing this video. I truly enjoyed your technique and details. I don’t know much about painting. What was the purpose of adding the salt on the rock?
Glad you enjoyed it. The salt creates small little textured areas as the paper dry. Later you just brush the salt off.
