    Mr. Cartwright, Your tutorial gently demonstrates so many valuable pieces of information: preparation of the paper, a spare but informative drawing, the mixing of a large quantity of key colors, the importance of soft and hard edges and the delicacy involved in reserving white paper. I'm amazed at how much you imparted and demonstrated in a single tutorial. Will be searching out others of your videos.

    An excellent demonstration. Lived in that town for 30 years and spent lots time on those rocks while hubby fished for tailor off the point. I’ve seen that wild surf that made it unapproachable. You’ve captured it’s raw beauty and made this sort of scene attainable for a novice like me. I could almost smell the salty air. I appreciate your time that you share Joe.

      Hello Carol, glad you liked my video. It is always nice when someone tells me of their connection to a location I have painted. One day I was approached by a lady to do a commission of a lighthouse. I told her I had some reference photos I took of the old lighthouse at Crookhaven Heads , she said that was great as the commission she wanted was of that very same lighthouse where her dad was the lighthouse keeper for many years. The the commission was for his 85th birthday present!

      Thanks very much for the feedback Joan. I am based in Sydney, Australia, if that helps. The palette I use is one I designed and printed using a 3D printer. I wanted one that had plenty of room for paints, large mixing areas, and could be used both in my studio and when I paint outdoors. As each has to be printed, the price is $60 Australian plus postage if you are interested.

    What brushes are you using? It’s clear you’re using a natural hair brush in this demo, just wondering what brand or hair type. You do a knock out job with ocean scenes, which most artists find daunting (it’s probably the negative painting LOL)!

    • @JoeCartwright
      @JoeCartwright  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The brushes are made by and Australian company, NEEF, model is 4750-LP and they are a squirrel - Taklon blend.

      @@JoeCartwright Squirrel AND Takklon? Wow! They have a pure squirrel look/behavior to them from what I can see. Maybe I should rewatch? I recently bought some squirrel rounds that were on clearance at Jerry’s Artarama here in the states, with the label “Creative Mark.” I could have sworn we had the same brushes, they look and behave the exact same way, even down to the color painted on the handle and the metal ferrule! And funny enough, I was looking up NEEF the other night because another Australian artist I know mentioned them. And now I just learned Creative Mark is what’s called a “House Brand” so it’s been imported to the States under the name “Creative Mark” and resold by Jerry’s Artarama as it’s House Brand. Which is the long way of saying - hey we are probably using the exact same brush that’s made by the same brush company- and sold under different names in our different countries. Wild how that works!

      @JoeCartwright  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could be right as I know that the company in Japan that makes them for NEEF also make similar brushes for other suppliers. @@ArtBlueCrane

      This is not technically part of the beginner course playlist as it is an advanced painting but I added it to the beginners series as well as it is worth looking at. It belongs to my more advanced series which are not numbered. Well done on getting this far through the series, from now on the series is not as structured but more based on topics my students often have difficulty with.

      Glad you found my video helpful! I use Arches 90lb coldl press and the board I used is called gator board. But since then I have found that a piece of flat acrylic from the hardware store works just as well.

      Glad you like them Marie. I designed and made the palette myself using a 3D printer. I wanted a palette with room for lots of paint and mixing areas.

      GSM refers to grams per square meter and is a measure of how heavy a piece of paper is.

    Can you do a pink/orange sunset over crashing waves with the sun almost down but you can still "sea" the shape of the sun? I'm taking in all the details of your paintings before I start learning as much as I can thank you for your videos

    • @JoeCartwright
      @JoeCartwright  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The trick is to break you painting down into smaller steps. My video shows you how to do breaking waves, then the light from the sun will have a reflection similar to what I did in this video: th-cam.com/video/mAHP4B1ZPiA/w-d-xo.html Then the orange and pink sunset can be done like this: th-cam.com/video/mQYAgQWF0WU/w-d-xo.html The color of the water will be changed by the colors in the sky - plenty of free photos on the web can show you this. Good luck. One day I may do a video like you request but sadly I have many more I need to do before that one and they each take about 3 days to produce! :-)

    Hi, I really enjoyed your tutorial and I have a small question. Why didn't you start the painting by painting the rocks? This will give shape to the painting from the beginning... 41:21

    I like your picture but it’s hard to follow. If you have the picture we are painting set aside so I can see what to be expected. It will be easier. I saw even you were holding a picture when painting and I could only use my imagination .

      Thanks for the feedback. This was one of my early videos which was a edited version of one of my early Zoom classes. My newer videos are a lot more polished - and I no longer use printed references.
