+Andrea Caloiaro What? Sterilized math metal with no soul? Nah man. Bands like this have been around for years, this is just the most polished and antiseptic one yet. Don't worry though, I'm sure there are plenty more where this came from.
+Cx Mu - Hey, just wondering to you think this is cold and no soul? i know what u mean, some songs concentrate on the complexity and leave behind what makes music Music.. i love this song (my own opinion) was just curious what is a band or a song you would say is just The Best. I enjoy talking music and hearing what makes others tick (musically of course) looking forward hearing from you. take it easy
+Cx Mu There are a lot of bands you could fairly accuse of being soulless technicality, but Animals as Leaders is not one of them, definitely not CAFO. There is a solid beat to each section of this song (even if some parts are in 9/4 or 7/4 and are harder to follow), and each riff is memorable in its own right. I particularly love the slow dissonant chordal riff following the long tapped section and the way they bring back the rhythm part from the intro alongside it.
People, "Soul" is the most common argument used by people who doesn't know anything about music (Next to feeling). Its equal to say that you don't like something because you just don't. Any emotional reaction to music is totally subjective and inherent to a particular person, I can say that this song causes me euphoria, tension and a whole spectrum of feelings, and who can say anything? And most likely a lot of people will react somehow to this song. If you want to criticize music, at least come with something constructive and measurable.
you know, after some popular music, it sounds like shit, I can understand. Not a single 4/4, no nude girls or hot singers, nothing that can catch an average man
+Norbert Somogyi To each his own, but I'd have to disagree. After some pop music, this sounds other worldly and God-like. See Stevie T's video on How To Write a Pop Song. But I understand what you mean. I've tried showing this to people that don't normally listen to music like this, and with the sweeping in the beginning, they think it's just another average metal song. And I'm like nah, nah, nah... Just wait. And then it kicks in with the melodies.
Ty Carpenter for me it's godlike, but you got it. Even the melodies aren't that kind of melodies what other people used to. For example I can't imagine a day without music, and I know a lot of people who don't listen to music at all (I'd die in 2 days)
Dundiiin, dun dun dun dun dun, dun dun dun dun dun, dun dun dun dun diiin, dun dun dun dun dun, dun dun dun dun dun, dun dun dun dun diiin, dun dun dun dun dun, dun dun dun dun dun, dun dun dun dun diiin, dun dun dun dun dun, dun dun dun dun dun, dun dun dun dun diiin, dun dun dun dun dun, dun dun dun dun dun, dun dun dun dun diiin, dun dun dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnnn.
Yo I'm one to live and die for hip-hop. REAL hip-hop from the 90s, underground, jazzy, boom bap, golden era old school. As you can see from my hiero logo to the left...reason I'm saying this is because I'm not one to listen to metal at all and people would never expect a real hip-hop extremist to peep this out but this shit.... is FUCKING AMAZING. I can't even fathom how people are saying this is boring. Do you not see the talent these dudes have? It's off the fucking charts. If they "look bored themselves" it's because they have so much goddamn talent that they can rip their shit something fierce and make it look easy. This is like Van Halen's "Eruption" (the intense and talent that's so crazy sounds like old school mega man music on acid aspect of it) fuckin fused with some Santana. How the fuck can one not appreciate such musical prowess. Mad props yo this shit is wild.
That's wassup brotha stay up. It is rare though for people to appreciate quality music. Sadly our society has dwindled down to listening to pure corporate sell out mainstream garbage such as (insert wack mothafuckas wayne drake minaj etc.) and quite frankly it sickens me to the soul. There needs to be a major change, a revolution where the people change what they're feeding their minds because the media has more control over society than the average thinks. It's more than just music its about the consciousness.
lmfao what happened here? I see a lot of well minded people and one hyper ultra combo fucking imbecile talking madness (thepiratebay). the ONLY reason I mentioned hip-hop was to put emphasis on how dope THIS video is to someone that's a crate digging real hip-hop junkie. why let genres set boundaries on your life? The genre of the music matters not son it's the content. whether or not it is actually good quality music (and I don't mean like 240p or 1080p by quality because I personally like the dry recording sound) or extreme garbage.
Jay Bernal a lot of ppl still don't know an obvious troll (Thepiratebay) when they see one. They truly are miserable people who thrive on just shitting on other people's passions and interests because they want everyone to be as angry and miserable as they are. They are to be pitied or ignored. Preferably both. Anyway, I have to give you props for being as open minded as you are, it's rare to see that coming from someone primarily involved in a genre like hiphop. It usually is most of the mainstream BS that ruins genres for other people who don't know how to find the good stuff in any form of music. I'm glad to see you can see past that and if I were to meet you in person I'd gladly shake your hand and talk hip hop and rock/metal/blues with you. Props.
Have you never heard Nile? These guys are great at what they do. But, so many people these days mistake talent and great writing and musicianship for "OH MY GOD HE'S PLAYING 8-STRING AND TAPPING AND..." all this stuff, but its just a bunch of "look what I can do" all rolled into a song. Being able to do a specific thing doesn't mean it should be done all the time. These guys, like I said earlier, DO sound great, but they don't know when to let the music breathe. Part of being talented in music (IMO) is knowing how to compose a song and when to and when not to do a certain thing. Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to piss you off or be high and mighty as most comments like this are accused of being. I just think there are many other bands you need to listen to before saying that. I agree with Ozma2112 to an extent. It's great if you can do it, but it was boring cause it's all they were doing for 6+ minutes.
Good deal, brother. I like to talk real about music without having people get all defensive and stuff. The only time I'm ever being an ass about it, you can always tell. heh
This is my first time hearing their music. The dope thing about this is that it actually works and sounds good, it's not just insanely technical playing just for the sake of showing off. It sounds fantastic, what an absolute jam.
Just found out about Tosin by watching one of his tutorials. I was very impressed by his skills but after listening to this I have to say that I understand why this music is not more mainstream. Some of the best songs in the world are the simplest of songs, this feels like a person trying to showcase his ample skill set more than someone focused on writing an actual song.
Ouch. I guess the other 2 musicians contributing to the song are just stage props... Have any idea how difficult the timing is on the this song? And one last question: do you play music yourself?
are you fucking kidding me?! yes some of the best songs written of all time are the simplest but part of writing a song is putting your all into it. and if his all makes many others look like shit or are to complex rhythmically, or unappealing to certain folks then so be it. its a song he wrote from within and had the ability to make it audible and that is something many other "artists" cant.
sweeny513 I am guessing as to why his music is not more popular. I do enjoy it personally but in my opinion it seems too cluttered, he could lose half of the riffs used in the song and make it into a whole other song.
PaveLowExpert 'this feels like a person trying to showcase his ample skill set more than someone focused on writing an actual song." So you're saying this isn't a real song? Lyrics aren't needed to make something a song, man.
My friends and I were tripping our balls out on acid, listening to Tool. Then outta nowhere this masterpiece started playing and I legit was one with the music. It was magical.
Irony much TH-cam? Immediately after this video I get an ad for some app called "Musician" that let's you "play along with any song" Annnnnnnnnnnddd.... No
I discovered this band several years ago. One night I was taking a ride home and my Uber driver plays this song. I liked it and I had the SoundHound app tell me the name of the song and band. Got to see Animals as Leaders at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco in 2019. Aside from one of the band’s merch boys sucking at his job and charging me double the price of one t-shirt by being negligent, this was an awesome concert. These guys are the real deal.
TH-cam-person0098 Me too! Meshuggah? More like MEH-shuggah. Turned me off Djent a bit. More of an Anaal Nathrakh guy myself. But this is the first time I'm hearing this band, and it's amazing!
I don't get the hate for this band. As a drummer, I find the polyrhythmic drumming flawlessly incorporated into the rhythm in such a way that it compliments the other instruments and you can actually bob your head to it compared to some other beat/riff salad bands that focus on just being as impressive as possible rather than creating an entertaining experience. This is a solid display of fusing groove with technicality.
To some people (like me) it's just boring and expressionless; this doesn't make it bad, but no display of technicality or skill is (again, in my opinion) worth listening to if it's not moving or musical.
Well said. I think having a musical background may help you appreciate all that is going on here and yet comes together cohesively. Not an easy feat to do. Regardless, haters gonna hate.
Yup, I think this music is more for the musicians. As drummer as well, I concur with what you said Eric. I take the rhythms in as bliss. It's not for everyone. Not saying other can't enjoy this, but musicians would understand this type of music more.
The problem with this track is that it sounds generic. It's like they're not there. Like they're not saying something in particular, just showing off their skills. Impressive skills, but it's like there's nobody behind all that music. Soulless.
I literally just heard of animals as leaders about 5 minutes ago when Tosin was referenced by another guitar player. After less than two minutes in to this song, (the first of thiers Ive heard) I am wondering WHERE THE HELL HAVE THEY BEEN ALL MY LIFE?
That's me right now!!! I had a nostalgia trip so I listened to Thru the Fire and Flames, then watched Herman Li vids, then found his session with Tosin, then looked up Tosin, then I was like "Damn. This brutha shreds", then looked up this band, and now I am learning the wonders of this damn band!!! 😵
Same for me, watched this flying lotus song and someone commented that it was a hybrid of miles Davis bitches brew and tosin abasi, searched his name and came to this vid
I have listened to AAL for a year now and i still dont hear the "djent" in them as everyone claim they play. I dont understand why so many call this djent. This is nothing like the "djent" bands i've heard. Anyways AAL is my favorite instrumental band, always listening to them when i study, i swear their music makes me smarter.
I have honestly gotten to the point where I believe progressive metal gets uploaded to Got Djent, regardless of it's "djentieness," and gets called djent because of the website's name and, I'm guessing, original purpose. No hate intended, I love progressive, and Got Djent is an awesome place to find new bands, but I fell like it's ruined the concept behind djent.
Honestly people, djent is not a genre it is a word that the guitar player from meshuggah made up to describe the noise his guitar makes when he palm mutes. This band is a progressive metal band through and through and an extremely talented band at that. Tosin Abasi is a genius. This band also almost didn't happen kids so thank your lucky stars that he decided to write solo material. As a musician the composition is pretty amazing considering there are about 4 rhythms being played at once in cohesion and as a casual listener though complex you can still easily latch on to any one of the rhythms being played because of the dynamics of the song. So stop giving this band flak and quit using the term djent
Why do I torture myself with this? It's kinda like when I watch Andy McKee... Half of me wants to go and practice until my knuckles fuse and the other half wants to throw all my gear out on the lawn and set it on fire...
I actuallt think like that to lol. I'm like "Wow so cool I will definetely learn this and play this perfectly I feel great" and my other self is like "nananae se tonight"
When it comes to playing technical guitar, I feel like Tosin Abasi is the bar. And Tosin is the only one who raises it. The stuff this guy plays is literally mind boggling. I wouldn't be surprised if Tosin is really an alien that has taken human form. Maybe this is the video of his birth 😂

Nah man. Bands like this have been around for years, this is just the most polished and antiseptic one yet.
Don't worry though, I'm sure there are plenty more where this came from.
No.
Ok I need to listen to more of this band immediately.
I like how at 3:45 the director was like "IDK, just fucken... wave the camera around all crazy like"
9 years and still one of the most insane pieces of music I've ever heard.
They should do a cover of "While My Guitar Djently Weeps"
"While My Guitar Djently *Sweeps"
Ha ha the funniest Djent joke. XD
While My Guitar Sweetly Djents
Ft. Djembe solo
Tre Mac hahahaha
How in the bloody hell does this have 1k dislikes? Who doesn't like transcending time and space?

you know, after some popular music, it sounds like shit, I can understand.
2:21 really gives me the chills like a cold winter on a futuristic metropolis enclosed in an orb in outer space
true
Hmm i wonder if everyone were to tell how that particukar section made them feel, i bet you could really get a look into how some peoples minds work
This is how the large hadron collider sounds

***** Uh look at me I like djent I'm so edgy. fuck off please
Neurawr Nevermind him/her. Just a troll obviously...
lmfao what happened here? I see a lot of well minded people and one hyper ultra combo fucking imbecile talking madness (thepiratebay). the ONLY reason I mentioned hip-hop was to put emphasis on how dope THIS video is to someone that's a crate digging real hip-hop junkie. why let genres set boundaries on your life? The genre of the music matters not son it's the content. whether or not it is actually good quality music (and I don't mean like 240p or 1080p by quality because I personally like the dry recording sound) or extreme garbage.
Jay Bernal
a lot of ppl still don't know an obvious troll (Thepiratebay) when they see one. Props.
Plot twist: None of them actually know where they are in the song XD
AHHHHHAHAHAHAHA THATS FREAKIN GOLDEN!!! XD
Song? They play 3 of their hits here
Comedy gold right here
pretty sure thats why they got a different drummer, hes the only one who could have gotten fired without it bein a hate crime
Dikkie SikkStrings just couldn’t resist 😒
God has this on his ipod
***** clever reply, I like that
***** Of course . only the best...
By far the most talented band I've ever listened to.
It's great if you can do it, but it was boring cause it's all they were doing for 6+ minutes.
kingkeefage Of course I know NIle :) and dude it's your opinion. I'm all ears for them. totally cool with me.
Good deal, brother. I like to talk real about music without having people get all defensive and stuff. The only time I'm ever being an ass about it, you can always tell. heh
kingkeefage Straight up man.
Tool is number one in my book.
This is my first time hearing their music.
The dope thing about this is that it actually works and sounds good, it's not just insanely technical playing just for the sake of showing off. It sounds fantastic, what an absolute jam.
Been playing 40 years and I can't imagine half of those sounds, let alone make them.
Not saying that. I am talking about the music composition, which is written by Tosin.
are you fucking kidding me?! yes some of the best songs written of all time are the simplest but part of writing a song is putting your all into it. and if his all makes many others look like shit or are to complex rhythmically, or unappealing to certain folks then so be it. its a song he wrote from within and had the ability to make it audible and that is something many other "artists" cant.
sweeny513 I am guessing as to why his music is not more popular.
3 years hearing this song, and never get bored, the tempos are incredibles!
8 MILLION VIEWS?!?! There is hope for humanity.
My friends and I were tripping our balls out on acid, listening to Tool. Then outta nowhere this masterpiece started playing and I legit was one with the music. It was magical.
Dude, Tosin Abasi seriously knows what he doing. As for now, I am following these guys. Awesome band
Gallacherboy ditto
never too late
Irony much TH-cam? Immediately after this video I get an ad for some app called "Musician" that let's you "play along with any song"
Annnnnnnnnnnddd....
No
I discovered this band several years ago.
2:30 probably my favourite riff of all time
so true.
love tosin's guitar playing, the drums is killing it, the only problem- their vocalist sucks
Yap. Should have replaced the vocalist.
Yea such a bad vocalist...he doesnt know when to sing
probably better than James Labrie
He's just too quiet in the mix, give the guy some slack.
Awesome MVS good joke, seriously tho, on awake he’s pretty cool
The first Djent i ever truly liked.
TH-cam-person0098 Me too! Meshuggah? More like MEH-shuggah. Turned me off Djent a bit. More of an Anaal Nathrakh guy myself. But this is the first time I'm hearing this band, and it's amazing!
Check out Plini
one cannot simply listen to this on mid volume. it must be max capacity at all times
***** Matt didn't play drums on this song/album. That was Navene Koperweis.
Soulless.
can they play smoke on the water?
S.G. No one can play smoke on the water the fast picking and flaming fretwork makes it impossible to play
I attempted once. Dislocated my fingers on the first note.
what are you guys talking abt smoke on the water is easy

It is projects like this that approximate the Heavy Metal to the father of all music genres, the classical music
I just found them right now.... I'm sooooooooooooooooooomothetfuckinlate
I love the "Yeah, I know I'm a God." smirk on Tosin's face thoughout xD
5 yeas ago: this song inspired me to learn guitar
3 years ago: this song inspired me to give up the guitar
This comment has to blow up xD
What shiny diamond out of the dust of metal have i pulled out here!
12 years... unbelievable, this song hadn't aged a day
Very Impressive, but can you play a COLDPLAY SOLO ?!
lmfao
These guys can do it without a delay pedal
@@musicman6555 They cant play the solo to Master of puppets😉
Don't be so yellow
I have listened to AAL for a year now and i still dont hear the "djent" in them as everyone claim they play. I dont understand why so many call this djent. This is nothing like the "djent" bands i've heard. Anyways AAL is my favorite instrumental band, always listening to them when i study, i swear their music makes me smarter.
0:48 has quite a bit of djent in it.
derrick eicholtz at the 5 min mark too.
The groovy riffs, like at 0:15 backing guitar, but naming djent as a single genre for this band doesn't do it justice. Meep just call it prog
Why do I torture myself with this? It's kinda like when I watch Andy McKee... Half of me wants to go and practice until my knuckles fuse and the other half wants to throw all my gear out on the lawn and set it on fire...
Livingthat Twelvelife I feel that way when ever I watch Les Claypool.
Why not both?
You won't grow into the person you're supposed to be by only doing the things that are easy to you.
I actuallt think like that to lol. I'm like "Wow so cool I will definetely learn this and play this perfectly I feel great" and my other self is like "nananae se tonight"
Wow there are no words to describe how amazingly talented he is.its disappointing how little the metal genre gets the recognition it deserves
I like how "chill" they are while playing
You kinda have to be. If you don't completely relax you'll fuck up. hard.
Saw these guys with Periphery and Heavy metal ninjas here in New Zealand 2 weeks ago and they were very impressive to see live. Difficult to mosh and headbang to with all the tempo / signature changes but made for a hell of a circle pit
I wish I had known that the heavy metal ninjas were playing!!!! That would have been amazing! They are so badass
Jo3M It was a wicked gig man. I know one of the members of HMN and didnt really know what to expect since i had only heard of them, never seen their stuff, and man they were one hell of an opening
That lead guitarist is just incredible!
I'm pretty sure that's drop H in 23/x² timing.
transcendent. what a gold comment haha
There no H note dude
Please don't r/woosh me
@@jccanizal6410 H is actually a note. The note B was previously named H. So the C major Scale would go C D EF G A HC. I am not sure if that’s what the writer of this comment meant though. It might have been just a symbol for a low tuning.
@@vr-virtualreality8875 my music teacher once taught me that this is because when music was still hand written, over time the note b became more and more known as h, because of how similar they look

evazian5 clearly you haven't listened to anything except this song by them if you think they have no melody in their music....
The melody is complex. A conformed thinking musician would probably have trouble understanding it.
I occasional come back to this video at least once a year to read comments cause they get dumber every year
Me too, coincidentally. There's always a few sweaty old grognards hanging around and talking shit about how this music has no "soul", like their opinion has any weight.
hey say it has no soul? Are they deaf?
Speaking of. "Occasionally" ", at least once a year," and "because". You aren't helping.
Oh my God right?
+Vanish EditZ well damn.
But, can they play the lil wayne version?
Danjoker no
What?
OMG I died laughing
LOL! thats too hard
it takes skill to be that bad
Tosin is a Guitar God!
The drumming is absolutely insane i love how off tempo it is, everything about this band is just amazing. been listening to this for so long now. One of the most innovative and amazing bands in the last 10 years! along with between the buried and me of course!
Do you mean off-beat?
Whats even crazier is it's all MIDI (programmed) drums lol. At least this album was.
I think it's GGD but it also could be Superior Drummer or Steven Slate Drums. Regardless Misha Mansoor is a beast at button clicking not even being sarcastic he absolutely slayed at the composition.

Those chords at 2:22 before the solo. My god man
Orgasmic
I keep composing because I wanna be this detailed. I'll never get there, but at least my misled attempts to get here are kind of interesting.
These guys motivate me to keep pushing further. Which is not something many do.
Same happens with me !
Poor other guitarist. Everyone always talks about Tosin Abasi and no one talks about the other guy. I don't even know his name lol
it's Javier Reyes
The "other guitarist", Javier Reyes, is an awesome player too. He have or had another proyect called Mestis and i liked a lot too.
Javier Reyes is amazing. Saw them again a couple months ago. Ended up front stage watching Javier the whole time. He is the lynchpin of AAL.
