@Nurse Jar the book does not state that it is necessary to wash hands before performing this skill and putting on gloves. Is that mandatory on testing?

Hi, Carmen Abril! Good luck on your exam! I will definitely keep you in my Prayers. Stay positive and confident. You got this!!! Keep me posted on how you do. What state will you be testing in?
Hello, thanks for posting these videos! They are very helpful. I took a CNA course in Washington state (Pearson Vue) and am testing here in Texas. For this procedure, I was taught to take off the dirty gown prior to donning gloves. Does it matter if I take the gown off before donning gloves or does it have to be done after donning gloves? Also, I was taught to use a dry washcloth to dry the face and the arm, not a towel. It says in the booklet step 7 that you may dry the face with dry cloth towel/washcloth. Will I fail if I use a dry washcloth? Thank you!
Hi, Cassie! Because the putting on of clean gloves is order dependent only to Step 6, it does not matter if you don gloves before or after removal of dirty gown. Also. You may use either/or washcloth/towel to dry the client. This video demonstrates exactly how I train my students to perform the testable skills. Thanks for your comment and questions! And, welcome to Texas!!!
Can Meredith drop her skincare routine? Lol. But on a serious note I wish I had found your videos sooner. My exam is tomorrow finally. After it being rescheduled 3 times already due to there being no evaluator available,I’m ready to get this over with. It’s stressing me out to much lol.
When you get to the step ( I think it's step 10) where you wash the client's fingers, hand, arm, and underarm; can you do it in any order or should I follow the order that is listed in the candidate handbook? Thank you so much for all of your help & patience!!
Hi, Monica! You can perform this step in any order. However, I always instruct my students to leave the armpit for last, as it is the "dirtiest" part of the arm! With the 2018 NNAAP Updates, you now have to wash, rinse and dry the fingers individually.

Hi Miss Julie, I'm going to take my state exam on Tuesday, Aug 27th...and I have a question, if you don't mind. In your video of modified bed bath, you did not raise the bed (for proper body mechanics), I know that we are supposed to do that in "real life" but in the exam it's not specified...do you know if the evaluator will not give me credit if I didn't raise the bed? I am really worried about this, because If I raised the bed, then I can't lower it back down before I clean the basin/supplies since I will still be wearing my gloves at that time. I hope my question makes sense and I'm looking forward to your response. More power to you!
Hi, Kissie! Because body mechanics is not emphasized during testing, raising and lowering the level/height of the bed is not scored. However, if you chhose to raise the height of the bed and do not lower it before you walk away from the person's bedside, you will get flagged for safety. I train my students NOT to mess with adjusting the level/height of the bed, not only due to the risk of getting flagged for safety, but also due to this action taking (wasting) a lot of your time. Good luck on your exam! Let me know how you do. What state will you be testing in?
@@NURSEJAR Thank you so much for your quick response! I was just worried that the evaluator will fail me/not give me credit for not raising the bed, but your response really makes sense. Thank you for making these videos...you're helping a lot of people like me.
so disposing of the linens & avoiding contact between the candidates clothing & used linens is taking the towels and putting them in the designated area ?
Hi Miss Julie, from the previous responses I am assured that with Pearson Vue, body mechanics is not emphasized nor scored during testing. I am on the taller side and wondering, if I do elevate the bed, when do I lower it? Can I lower the bed while still wearing the gloves from washing the patient? Do I need to verbalize (or manually) disinfect the bed’s controls?
Hi, Ennvoyrose! You are correct! Body mechanics is not emphasized (scored) during testing under Pearson Vue. If you have to heighten the level of the bed, you will need to ensure you lower the level of the bed before you state, "skill complete".
@@NURSEJAR Thanks! Just to clarify that I understand correctly -- it’s okay to lower it anytime after washing client, as long as I do it before stating “skill complete”? And I don’t need to worry about disinfecting the bed controls? I am just scared to be flagged for infection control, that’s why I am clarifying. :)
@@ennovyrose Yes. The best time to lower it would be after you remove and dispose of gloves, and verbalize, "washing hands". Then, lower the bed to a safe position. Then, verbalize, "skill complete".
Hi Mrs. Julie thank you for your video it's really helpful, I just one thing concern is it usually constant to partial wash only on other side? What about In other side? I notice that only in one arm of the resident had wash and other not. I just asking. Thank you.
Hi, Evelyn! If you are testing under Prometric, yes. If you are testing under Pearson Vue, no, because Pearson Vue does not emphasize or score Body Mechanics.
No. Placing a clean barrier on the table is not scored or mandatory. You may choose to do so, but to save time, I do not have my students to do this. I train my students to shave time whenever possible. This is to allot more time to spend on any complex skills they may have to perform during testing.
Hey Nurse JAR. I just wanted to know if it's ok to leave the wash cloths on the basin after use and is it OK to place the drying off towel on the bed side table until disposing it in the designated dirty area or go ahead and dispose of it then come back to finish up?
Thank for all your awesome videos. I've been using them to study for my exam. When it comes to this skill, aren't you supposed to wash the fingers and the finger nails?
My school that I attended taught us that we have to have a clean and dirty barrier. So that being said, they wanted us to have 3 washcloths, 4 hand towels, 1 bath towel, 1 gown, soap, basin and a pair of gloves. They want us to put the dirty washcloths on one of the hand towels thats used as a dirty barrier instead of the basin. I have testing coming up and I was just curious if all those towels are required ? I'm testing out of Washington state.
Hey Nurse Julie! Would you use a bath blanket to cover the patient in order to not soil the patients sheets? Or is it okay to go without? Thank you, From Iowa!
A little late but you’re supposed to always raise the bed to a safe level to protect your back, just remember to lower the bed back down before leaving the room
I don't know if this helps, but I'm from Colorado and my list of skill steps only mentions us having to place a cloth towel underneath the client's arm.
I love your vids!! Taking my exam in TX on the 6th!! I have one question though, is washing the bridge of the nose required? Just wanted to double check!! Thank you for taking the time to film these
Hi, Hailey! Good luck on your exam! Let me know how you do. Although the handbook does not specify "washing the bridge of the nose", it does specify "washing the face starting with the eyes". The nose is part of the face!
I take my test tomorrow but I'm confused because I'm unsure if I should wash the fingernails or not? I think I'm going to play it safe and wash them anyway. HELP ME PLSSSS SOMEBODY
@@staceyharrington5239 I've taken my test and I passed. I did not get that skill but i did ask the once the testing was complete and I was told, you only if it's listed in the steps, if not then it's not maditory and will not count against you.
Good Morning. You videos have been very helpful to me for my upcoming exam. in regards to step 14( empty , rinse, and dries basin) I was taught that if the water is dumped in anything besides the toilet that it can count against the candidate. Do you know this to be true or not?
Hi, Alma! Good question. Because body mechanics is not emphasized, nor scored, during testing, I do not emphasize it in my training videos. Another reason I do not emphasize body mechanics in my training videos is because nurse aide candidates often forget to lower the height of the bed before walking away. This could cause them to receive a tag for "SAFETY", one of the 5 indirect care skills that the NAE will be observing for. Hope this answered your question!
Hi, Shantay! You will need 3 washcloths: one to wash the face (no soap); one to wash the arm, hand, fingers, and underarm; and one to rinse the arm, hand fingers and underarm.
Ms.Julie when doe one raise the bed? Is it before washing hands or after? And can one fail for raising bed before washing hands? Please advice me. Thank you...
Hi, Amore! If you need to raise the height/level of the bed, I would advise you to raise it after you have gathered your supplies and filled the basin with water. Just remember, if you raise the height of the bed, to lower it to a safe position before stating "Skill Complete".
JULIE REYNOLDS thank you ma’am. As well tell me if I can do my skills without raising the bed will that fail me? Because I see you don’t raise the bed..
Hi, Remy! Yes, my videos are for test training purposes. In real life, you still would want to use a different washcloth for the face and genital areas. So, yes, you would still need or want to use several different washcloths when bathing the person in real life.
@@tanishajohnson3679 Yes. But, make sure when washing the hand, you wash, rinse, and dry each individual finger and fingernail. Thia is a change with the 2018 NNAAP Update. I have an updated video on this skill demonstrating this technique.
Hi Julie!! I take my test for the state of MI on 11/26 & have been brushing up on my skills with your videos!! Thank you SO much for the time you take out of your day to provide this wonderful content!!! Is there an update for 2019 for the Prometric skill : Partial Bed Bath & Back Rub that you could do??
This is the text taken from the Prometric Clinical Skills Checklist : (Provide resident a partial bed bath and back rub The candidate is asked to bathe a resident who is in bed and who is not able to help with his/her bathing. For testing purposes only, the candidate is asked to wash just part of the body so that technique can be evaluated. Instructions ask the candidate to wash the resident’s face, neck, back, one hand and arm, and the chest and abdomen. Soap and water should be used for the bathing. The resident also needs a back rub. When completing the skill, the mannequin is dressed in a clean hospital-style gown. A mannequin is used for the role of the resident.)
Hi, Tiffany! I am in the process of creating grid sheets for use by Instructors and students who test under Prometric. I will definitely produce videos that will correlate with the grid sheets. But, it will take some time for me to produce these videos. Good luck on your exam and let me know how you do.!
Hi Julie, and this is for the state of Texas correct? Cause I’ve watched several videos from Texas and each one is different . One gentleman uses different towels for drying and as a barrier for the arm? If this is done is it a fail?
Hi, Beth! Thank you for your question. No, you will not receive a "NO" for this step if you use a second towel for drying. To shave time, it is best to use the same towel you use as a barrier to dry. You may perform this step either way. How I am demonstrating this skill will save you time while performing this task and while gathering supplies for this task.
Thanks Julie, I was trained in a different state, but the same exact skills. I also have a question about the placement of the barriers for catheter care and peri care. I was taught to just place the barrier between the legs. I was not taught to roll or to have them raise their hips to place the barrier. If I do it the way I was taught would be that be a fail? Thanks so much for your responses, I take my test tomorrow!! Yay!
Hi, Beth! You will receive a "NO" for that step if performed in that manner. The barrier, whether it's a towel or chux, must be placed under the perineal area and buttocks for both Peri-Care and Catheter Care. It is easier for you to have the client raise his/her hips to place the barrier; however, you may also raise the side rail then assist the client to turn on his/her side to place the barrier.
Yes you do. I’m in Michigan, I was taught to put a bath blanket on and to roll the patients blanket under neath towards the end of the bed and then put the gown on just like how she did in the video
Hi, Abena! The only substances that should be emptied in the toilet are the contents and rinse of both the bedpan and measuring container. Water from the bath/wash or emesis basin should be emptied in the sink.
Hi, J! Thank you for your comment. The only skills that require emptying the contents and rinse into the toilet is "Assists With Use of Bedpan" and "Measures & Records Urinary Output".

Hi, Princess 211! If you are testing under Pearson Vue or Credentia, no, you do not. If you are testing under Prometric, yes, you do.
I am from California @@NURSEJAR
Hey Nurse JAR. I just wanted to know if it's ok to leave the wash cloths on the basin after use and is it OK to place the drying off towel on the bed side table until disposing it in the designated dirty area or go ahead and dispose of it then come back to finish up?
Hi, Tyna! Yes, to both of your questions!
Thnk u so much
Hi Mrs. Julie, do we have to raise the bed for any of the skills? Or can we just keep it lowered for the whole exam?
Hi, Kelly! Depends on what Administration you're testing under.
Pearson Vue does not emphasize Body Mechanics; however, Prometric does.
@@NURSEJAR Pearson Vue, thank you!
Thank for all your awesome videos. I've been using them to study for my exam. When it comes to this skill, aren't you supposed to wash the fingers and the finger nails?
Hi, Megan! Thank you! Yes, you are. This is an older video.
Thank you,
From Iowa!
Hi, Avery! If you are testing under Pearson View, it is not required of you to place a privacy blanket over the client.
so this is performed on a live person?
Love your training but I have never seen you raise the bet to waist high you always work low is it wrong to raise the bed.
A little late but you’re supposed to always raise the bed to a safe level to protect your back, just remember to lower the bed back down before leaving the room
How many times you have to wash your hands
You don’t need a bath blanket?
Definitely wash the finger nails and in between the fingers. Good luck
Hi, Angie! The only time you dump contents into the toilet is when it contains or has contained bodily fluids, such as the bedpan and urinal.
Oh, yeah! Glad to hear my videos are helpful to you!!!
Hi Julie I have question at the time of bed bath we don’t need bath blanket?
Hi,Hardeep! Not if you are testing under Pearson Vue
I feel the need to raise the bed for this procedure, why isn't it included?
Yes . ergonomi
Hi Nurse Jar! For Georgia 2019 Pearson vue, how many wash cloths do you need to perform bed bath with face, one arm, hand and underarm!?
Hi, Shantay! You will need 3 washcloths: one to wash the face (no soap); one to wash the arm, hand, fingers, and underarm; and one to rinse the arm, hand fingers and underarm.
Thank you so much! I test on the 20th of this month! Wish me luck! Thank you so much for your videos!
Hi, Shantay! Thank you and good luck on your exam! Let me know how you do.
You will be the first to know how it goes! I have to test in South Carolina all the way from Georgia
@@amoremimik5270 Hi! If you are testing under Pearson Vue, body mechanics is not emphasized/scored.
JULIE REYNOLDS ooh mine is prometrics I don’t know if you know about that step. Thanks
@@amoremimik5270 Hi! If you are testing under Prometric, body mechanics is emphasized and scored.
in Minnesota the make us use 2 different wash cloths just for the hand
So 1 for the hand and 1 for the fingers??
So is this just for passing skills? Do u use all those washcloths in a real setting?
Hi, Remy! Yes, my videos are for test training purposes. In real life, you still would want to use a different washcloth for the face and genital areas. So, yes, you would still need or want to use several different washcloths when bathing the person in real life.
Ok thanks
Hey Mrs.julie do you soak the hand in the water ,like you would before doing foot care?
Hi, Tanisha! No, you do not soak the person's hand in the water-filled basin.
@@NURSEJAR ok so do I wash like you did in the video?
@@tanishajohnson3679 Yes. But, make sure when washing the hand, you wash, rinse, and dry each individual finger and fingernail. Thia is a change with the 2018 NNAAP Update.
I have an updated video on this skill demonstrating this technique.
@@NURSEJAR ok thanks so much!☺️
@@tanishajohnson3679 You are most welcome!
Do we have to clean the ears during the face wash?
Hi, Angelika! No, you do not have to clean the ears.
This is the text taken from the Prometric Clinical Skills Checklist :
(Provide resident a partial bed bath and back rub
The candidate is asked to bathe a resident who is in bed
and who is not able to help with his/her bathing. For
testing purposes only, the candidate is asked to wash
just part of the body so that technique can be evaluated.
Instructions ask the candidate to wash the resident’s
face, neck, back, one hand and arm, and the chest and
abdomen. Soap and water should be used for the
bathing. The resident also needs a back rub. When
completing the skill, the mannequin is dressed in a clean
hospital-style gown. A mannequin is used for the role of
the resident.)
Hi, Tiffany! I am in the process of creating grid sheets for use by Instructors and students who test under Prometric. I will definitely produce videos that will correlate with the grid sheets. But, it will take some time for me to produce these videos.
Good luck on your exam and let me know how you do.!

@@tiffanyfitzpatrick489 YAY!!! CONGRATULATIONS! You #SMASHTHATCNAEXAM!!! So happy for you!
Oh thank you so much!! I’m so thankful you cleared that up for me! Love your videos, keep it up! Appreciate you!
You're welcome! Good luck on your test!
So we dont need a bath blanket?
Yes you do. I’m in Michigan, I was taught to put a bath blanket on and to roll the patients blanket under neath towards the end of the bed and then put the gown on just like how she did in the video
So do you wash one arm and not both arms
Hi, Monica! One arm only for testing.
Hey do you know where I can find the new 2018 updates to the skills ?
Yes. You can go to PearsonVue.com to download PA's candidate handbook.
In Arkansas the back and a back rub is included
Hi, Nina! Arkansas tests under Prometric. My videos are in correlation with Pearson Vue.
California ( in Pasadena).
U r amazing .
Hi, Shahzadi! Wow! Thank you very much!!!
Can u just use face wash cloth to wash arm Instead of having three rags
Hi, Michelle! No, you cannot.
Pls can you empty the basin in the toilet?
Hi, Abena! The only substances that should be emptied in the toilet are the contents and rinse of both the bedpan and measuring container.
Water from the bath/wash or emesis basin should be emptied in the sink.
Volume, please..
my mom has hers tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck! to your Mom! I'll be doing a live stream in about 5 minutes if she'd like to join.
howd she do?? I take mine tomorr!!
I thought the water had to be emptied in the toilet
Hi, J! Thank you for your comment. The only skills that require emptying the contents and rinse into the toilet is "Assists With Use of Bedpan" and "Measures & Records Urinary Output".

So you don’t do a complete bed bath ?

You can hand the clinent the call signal before removing gloves?

The water is suppose to go in the toilet. It's dirty water.
I thought so cus that’s how they trained us in the toilet 🚽 contamination
Hello Mrs. Julie. Your supplies setup are anal but it really does work. If one don't use these tips there will be errors. I was super nervous. I forget to lay out my gloves for this skill. (Forehead slap) I took the gown off before I don gloves. After I said " I'm starting with the eyes" Right before I place my 1st towel into the basin, the NAE stopped me and instructed me to put gloves... I cldnt remember if you said this was an automatic fail.🤔.. Other then this, I fell great about the rest of my skills this time around.
