Thank you so much for talking about this. I have a 10 week old Border Collie puppy who is obsessed with eating rocks and dirt. He came to me from the breeder with this behavior and I have changed his food and added vitamins. I will try the probiotics you mentioned. It is really awful because in these important developmental times I have to limit where he goes because I’m afraid he will get a bowel obstruction. I’m considering training him to wear a muzzle just so I can make sure he gets enough exercise and socialization. Thank you so much for your content, I like the attitude and approach you take to dog training. The hardest thing about having a puppy with pica is that I feel like the bad guy all the time. quickly distracting or pulling him away from rocks.
What a timely post. One of my 6month old puppies eats poop and has suffered from diarrhea on and off since I brought her home due to a Giardia parasite. I’m still battling to rid her of the parasite but have already ordered the probiotic you suggest as it could just help restore her gut microbiome. She has been fed raw since 8 weeks so I know she is getting the most appropriate diet possible. Susan, thankyou for your passion for all things ‘dog’. So glad I found you.
My Boston eats my Frenchie poop. She has done it for years. We have tried the sea and soil probiotics and it was not enough. We have changed diet but learning we can get a gut test is something I will be looking into
Susan, you are a super sleuth at sorting this out. I wish I'd had this information for my previous girl. I love the healthier solutions you have offered ( as opposed to the stuff you put on the poo).🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪
My dog at 4 years old as a nursing mother, naturally cleaned up the puppies stool. However, even after they were weaned she continued to eat poop , Not just hers but others also. I put her on Origin a gut supplement and within a few months she stopped. I agreewith your observations,
Timely! Thank you❤ I am for the first time in 50 years experiencing a dog poo eater in a 5 month old pup. She is only eating the poo of my 2 oldest dogs. I'm making sure no poo is ever left on the ground so there's no rehearsing of chowing down on it, but I wasn't sure what she might be missing in her diet and why those particular dogs poos are so appealing. She is on a great (balanced) fresh food only diet... so I wasn't sure where to go next. I'll try a different probiotic for her. ❤
Wow just the podcast I needed. One of my dogs has eaten poop since he was a puppy. It has improved since I switched to raw feeding but he still does it occasionally. Will definitely try a prebiotic. Have always been told that dogs just like the taste of poop, I've never been convinced. Thanks Susan x
Our first dog used to eat other dog's poop. Our 2 now think cat poop is a delicacy! Unfortunately with all the outdoor cats in our neighborhood, even walking them on leash is not a deterrent...they can sniff it out in a heartbeat!
Thank you so much, I have been trying to figure out why my 2 1/2 year old aussie has been doing this since he was around 8 mths....we will try the pro biotic mentioned and see if it helps....been waiting for this podcast thank you much
If I may add maybe another possibility of the why. My male did this disgusting habit occasionally. I feed my dogs kibble plus something fresh like blueberries, banana, carrots, or chicken with every meal. If the small chunks of carrots or blueberries were not completely digested he would be very interested in them when the came out the other end so to speak. I now make sure the extras are much easier to digest by steaming the carrots and cutting the fruit and this has helped quite a bit. He seemed to only eat his or his housemates the vast majority of the time and now it is gone but I still watch him carefully.
Same with my shepherd. Was the undigested blue berries he was after. He also wasn’t digesting properly, but now I fixed his nutrition, he digests all his foods WAY better and is ignoring poop 95% of the time. Also keep backyard clean every day to help train the behavior out of him. I’m no longer worried about him eating it when I’m not looking.
My three related mixed breed dogs eat dog poop but not each others. I’ve been told that the tendency is genetic, I can manage it when I catch them about to but with 3 off lead, I don’t always see them to offer them the choice to come away from it.
I work in rescue, is a very common that the dogs will eat their poop when they get stressed. Unfortunatly being in a kennel environment causes the stress and there isn't much you can do to stop them. You can give them more walks, but usually it doesn't help and the dogs where I work get a form of food enrichment 3x a day plus some. We feed Pineapple and give Crab Apple drops as it's natural, along with a gut flora suppliment, but honestly I haven't actually seen it work. Once they start they don't really stop until they find a home.
I've had my rescue Husky (10 months old) for 2 months and she still eats her own poop. I've always fed her fresh food from Butternut Box. I'm not convinced it's down to nutrition with her and behavioural habit she's picked up from being in a kennel
My 2 year old mini Bernedoodle has been eating poop and anything else edible that he can get at since I bought him. He also has a number of other conditions including diabetes insipidus, tracheal narrowing, yeast and fungal inflammation of the paws and occasional hot spots. Because of the poop eating, I can’t let him off leash, which breaks my heart since he loves to run and play and we live across from Central Park in NYC. The vet wants me to use a muzzle because he keeps getting Giardia due to poop eating but I am very against it. I just ordered the Soil and Sea product so I’m hopeful there will be some improvement. We also have subscribed to Home school the Dog - It’s Your Choice works well at home but as you said in your video, it doesn’t work with this poop eating problem.
We're so sorry to read about your dog's conditions, sending lots of love. Hoping for the probiotics to make a different for your pup, keep us posted please! ❤️
Every set of dogs I’ve had; I have had a poop eater. That poop eater has eaten poop his entire life. Nothing I have done has fixed it. • No health issues; at least none according to vets. Food is off your list of approved foods 😅 plus added Whole Foods veggies, fruit’s & vitamins yes, even a probiotic. Walks on leash is a big part of our life. The earliest pups stress might have been the issue. Kids & kids friends in the home whilst they were growing up could have been stressful. Now life is very quiet with a very empty home. Kids & grandkids live all throughout the states & out of the country being in the Military. He seems to be the same dog reincarnated. It’s just so crazy how much he does all the same things my other dog did. Different breed same silly personality. • I do my best to keep the yard poop free. We have a massive yard 😅
@kv6826 Susan has a great podcast that may help you understand more about why your dog has this behavior --> All The Things That Influence Your Dog's Behavior And What Behavior Tells You - th-cam.com/video/Tce597xfqA4/w-d-xo.html (Julie - DogsThat Team)
@ I am a huge fan of Susan & the channel. Been watching for years. As a retired Vet tech, retired dog trainer, & retired animal nutritionist, and foster mom to pets of nearly every kind… I have taken a backseat to just enjoining my FurEver-family members. I continue to keep up with all the new things as best I can. These days via Susan’s work and former colleagues with whom I still hold dear.
My previous dog developed a poop eating habit after his dogfood was changed. I stopped that food and started a new one and the habit ceased immediately.
I bought the Adored Beast product and have used it for over 2 months with no benefit yet on my dog eating poop either in the backyard (cat's) or at the dog park.
Hi @jillampson3944, if the solutions in this podcast are not working for you, we’d recommend a comprehensive veterinary check including a look at possible pain, gut health and diet and full bloodwork. Your vet can help deep-dive on so many possible issues for your dog. Thank you for caring so much about your pup 🧡 All the best (Sarah - DogsThat Team)
My boy only does that when playing. Like you said, attention. He will put anything in his mouth and run around expecting me to chase him: grass, dirt, poop, wood, etc. Unfortunately, I just manage it. He doesn't go off leash before I have inspected the perimeter.
On videos you sometimes see people "kissing" their dog or allowing him to lick the face. That is after the dog has possibly eaten extreme garbage. I've now read horror stories of dogs eating awful things at home and everyone's f..es while on a walk. This behavior doesn't usually come up in a dog vs cat debate. It is weird that you expect the dog to eat the same kibble every day, while you wouldn't eat concentrated spaceship food if given other options. The p..p becames his only alternative.
My 7 year old springer spaniel Missy eats poop but not her own and only in the winter..... Predominantly from my now deceased dog's poop....I call them poopsicles, lol! I'm curious to maybe get her analyzed but wondering if this intermittent nature of eating it is any indication for nutritional deficiency.....maybe just in the winter 🤔
We have one dog who used to eat poop a lot. He came from a horrible situation with a dog hoarder. We always thought he ate poop because the dogs had to compete for any kind of food. As he became confident that he'd get plenty of food here, the poop eating subsided and has effectively stopped as I've not seen it for over a year. Does this kind of behavioral cause make sense to you?
You know, children come to those who are young and mostly without experience in raising children. As grandparents, much to our children's chagrin, now we are experienced and experts at raising children. As a grandparent, what I keep trying now to get my children to understand, is that whenever we raise our voices to our children, and especially when we spank them (I was spanked and I spanked my children - it was what knew), it is not the child's failure; it is the parent's failure. Now, I wasn't a perfect parent and I don't expect my children to be perfect parents, but understanding where the fault lies certainly helps to be a better parent. This is why I am fully bought in to: *_My puppy is doing the best he can with the very limited education he has so far in the environment that I've currently put him in._*
Very valuable video! Do you have any thoughts on dogs that seek out cat poop specifically? My dog has no interest in dog poop, but oh man, avoiding the feral cat poop we encounter outside is a constant struggle. Still going to look in to whether or not she might have a deficiency, but it struck me as weird that she'd go for the sickest looking little cat turds outside D:
Susan, where do you get your dog toys and food puzzles? I checked some big online shops and all their products seem to be made and designed to engage and attract humans rather than dogs.

I live in a tiny house, and my puppy would run to the cat litter box to eat their poop. He also had gut issues. Wasn't eating enough, was low in confidence and drive, couldn't engage him in play. He loved to chase the other dogs, that was about it. He was losing weight, I was beside myself. LONG story short - found a raw nutritionist/homeopathic vet and there began a seven month slow but sure journey of getting my now 14 month old puppy back to the puppy he would have been in the first place. He is now healthy and happy and full of life, and doesn't look for poop anymore AND he is putting on weight! but oh man, when he ate poop - I didn't want him to lick me ever again lol .

This is indeed a timely post. My now 2 yea4 old Toller likes to eat my other Toller's poop. She is quick at it to and the tiniest amount left behind she's on it. She doesn't eat poop from any other dogs or animals. I thought she would outgrow but if opportunity knocks she helps herself. I have a rescue dog from Mexico who eats poop. I image it's because she spent her first few years foraging the streets of Tijuana for anything edible. So it's a habit maybe or her microbiome needs something more.
my dog will not poop on walks. We even ran a 5k, and I heard her fart on the way to the race. I walked around with her before the race, nothing. Even during the race I stopped when she was sniffing around. Nothing. She did not poop until we got home. 😟
