---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP) is a Cisco proprietary protocol used for the management and maintenance of VLANS across a switched network.
Without VTP, if you need to add, delete or edit a VLAN in your network then you would need to login to each and every switch and enter the commands manually. That's not a problem if you have two or three switches, but it can become very time consuming when you have a few more.
VTP solves this issue by allowing all switches (within the VTP domain) to sync their VLANs together in a VLAN database. The goal is to have every switch running the same version of the VLAN database.
The switches do this by sending different messages to each other. These messages allow them to update, maintain and synchronise their VLAN databases.
Types of Message
------------------------------
Summery Advertisement
These messages are sent to let all the switches know the current revision number of the VLAN database
-Domain name
-Password
-Revision number
-Followers
Subset Advertisement
These messages contain VLAN information so the other switches can add them to their own database.
-Domain name
-Revision number
-VLAN info
Advertisement Request
These messages are sent when a switch needs to request a Subset Advertisement to sync it's database.
Requirements
------------------------------
There are some requirements that need to be met before the switches will sync their VLAN databases.
-Be in the same VTP domain
-Have the same VTP password if set
-Connect over a trunk
Modes
------------------------------
There are three different modes that can be used.
Server
-Can create VLANs
-Can send updates
Client
-Cannot create VLANs
-Can send updates
Transparent
-Can only create local VLANs
-Does not send updates
-Does forward updates from other switches
VTP Pruning
------------------------------
Pruning is a feature of VTP that can helps prevent unnecessary traffic from being sent to switches with no ports on a particular VLAN. The switches will 'prune' VLANs from trunks in order to reduce any unnecessary bandwidth and resource usage. They do this by sending join messages.

CertBros, I am speechless, I don't know how to thank you,but in college these professors DO NOT explain lesson clear they want to feel important and smart, and not helping the students, If you ask them a question they tell you to go to book, CertBros thank you very much for short, smart and clear way explaining It, LOVE YOU.
Simple and to the point. That is how all the tutorials should be !!
Thanks Farhan! Just what I was going for.
CertBros I think there is one more mode in VTP called OFF mode to disable VTP completely.
Yes that's right. On some switches you can disable VTP with the 'Off' mode.
Off mode in in IOS 15 only. It isn't in IOS 12.
The additional info here by all those who commented on their being an “OFF” mode in later is very helpful to acknowledge. Thanks.
A pro on explaining, a pro with recording it, a pro with presenting it. Someone must increase your number!
Thanks Zeynel!
I agree with you man. His numbers will increase as people studying networking find his videos like me. And then find his videos so well explained both graphically in presentation but oratory explained as well.
I really like how short and clear when you explain how the vtp works , thank you so much.
Thanks!
I'm so glad I found these videos. It's nice to be able to understand a topic thoroughly. I thought I was just gonna be able to read and pass, but I found out that wasn't gonna happen. But these videos are so helpful. They make info clear, concise, and to the point. You guys rock!

Man I just want to really say this video was BOSS! All your videos are also BOSS. This was one the most confusing as hell topics I’ve come across so far in all of VLANS. You did a super damn great job in not only simplifying and explaining all of this, but with very great graphic and animation so well convey and e plain this that I totally get it. Your oratory skills in explaining all of it is totally on point. Whatever your doing in life, I hope your doing well at it. But please for all your subscribers and everyone that will eventually find your videos, please please Keep Making These So Well Explained Networking Concept Videos. I don’t think any subscribers here will disagree with me in the slightest on that. Your explanation of even difficult to understand concepts are in essence Nuts & Bolts Total BOSS!

Thanks!
@Certbros: Excellent delivery and content:
As mentioned: VTP pruning must only be enabled on Server (SW A), but looking at SW B database, VTP prunning is also enabled !! Does this mean Client Switch will also participate in prunning process or it is just refelecting the sync database. Please comment .
Nicely explained
Thanks Naveen.
best videos.. keep it up
Thank you
Great tutorial.
Thanks Ronnie!
Mate your explanation is just awesome. Thank you very much. Any ETA on your new CCNA course? Cheers

amazing explanation!!!!! maybe you can add rstp for the next one?
It's on my to-do list for sure!
great sir
thanks for the best explanation ....
Your welcome
Thank you sir
thanks for your help
No problem!
Even if a switch has learned some VLANs through VTP, you still need to go on the switch to configure the access ports you need in what VLAN, the trunk ports who allows what VLANs etc. I don't see that tremendous help of VTP. It must be something I'm missing.
love it thanks
No problem! Thanks for the comment.
thank you
Thanks for the awesome tutorial! I've a question: @5:50 "Links must be trunks" what does this mean?
