Honda City Hybrid vs Honda City Diesel vs VW Virtus DSG: Drive To Death!

  • The Honda City Hybrid makes a big leap for hybrid cars in the Indian market. Aside from offering a similar space and practicality package as the regular Honda City, it gets a powertrain that can deliver truly phenomenal fuel-efficiency. However, we had to see just how much the City Hybrid could deliver on a full tank, compared to other efficiency championing technologies - diesel and cylinder-deactivation.
    The Honda City diesel represents the good old-fashioned way of maximizing mileage while the Volkwagen Virtus DSG represents a way to get the best of efficiency as well as performance and excitement. To see how they stack up against each other in the real world, Alan, Arun and Tushar took these cars on a two-day long road-trip, driving through unforgiving city traffic, open highways and interstate roads clogged with fluctuating traffic. This is the definitive tank range test, including every possible kind of driving, to answer just one question - who survives the longest in the drive to death?

    Fun fact: The Honda City diesel goes limp mode after a range 0km restart and won’t rev past ~1,000rpm
    EDIT: Fuel-efficiency data as per Zigwheels' standardized real-world test (city/highway):
    Honda City Diesel: 15.32kmpl/21kmpl
    Honda City Hybrid: 20.15kmpl/23.38kmpl
    VW Virtus DSG: 12.12.kmpl/19kmpl
    As Alan stated in the video, the hybrid delivers its best highway efficiency with consistent/steady drive conditions but is sensitive to fluctuating traffic wherein EV mode can't engage as often/easily. The constant highway filtering that we had to do on NH8 is what ate into the City Hybrid's efficiency.

    I have a City eHev.
    My driving style has changed because of it.. especially the 250 NM torque it gives.
    Used to drive sedately and now have lots more fun.
    Yes it isn't as efficient as a diesel at highway cruising, never will be. Most of its efficiency comes from them braking. And if there's no braking, there's no energy recovered, it's only as good as any another efficient petrol.
    What's amazing is you can drive it with a heavy foot, having loads of fun and still get 17-18 on the highway.
    And in the city, it's just brilliant. Easily does 18-22 kmpl in very heavy traffic.
    Fun fact, in the recent Bangalore rains, i got stuck in traffic taking 3 hours to travel 6 kms. Reset the trip meter to see what it says after about a km of this. So it does 24 kmpl over a 5 km distance that took nearly 3 hours, and the AC was on full time.
    Because the engine was off most of the time coming on just once in a while to top up juice lost by running the AC.

    1. Refueled and manual calculation would have defined the correct mileage.

    • @abhinavk3505
      @abhinavk3505 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Agreed with point 1, but point 2 won't make sense buddy because all 3 cars have different fuel types. To say, City's capacity is 40L and Virtus' capacity is 45L, but it is obvious that Diesel is definitely more efficient than the Petrol (in this case it's a Turbo Petrol which eats fuel like anything) and the EHEV with it's hybrid technology is also really efficient. So considering the fuel tank capacity won't make much sense

      @@Eren-da-Jaeger Do you do that with ur car when checking efficiency? Just kidding. Honestly you shouldn't really run cars till they stutter and stop as you run the chance of damaging the fuel pump. You will also get air in your fuel lines and then will take a while for the cars to start-up again. Diesels have even more problems as they usually run higher pressure in their fuel lines.

A properly maintained diesel is actually not as polluting as it is projected to be. It's almost 19/20 between a normal petrol and diesel when it comes to CO2 emissions and other pollutants. Sad that we are being forced to let go the beauty of an engine and settle for hybrids and EVs. So if I have to let go my Scross in the near future, I will go for the Virtus. 700+ kms on a semi-performance car is hugely commendable. I bought the Vw Virtus on 23rd july 2022, completed 1700 kms till 2nd august and reported a problem to service centre when i went in for swagat check up that the car is pulling to the left. They tried to solve the problem by exchanging front tyres, got back the car, problem was not solved, reported it back on 6th august. They confessed that the car is new and they don’t have any data for wheel alignment. I was called back on 11th august, i dropped my car and back to back 3 wheel alignments were done with trials, problem was not solved i tried showing the car 3rd party wheel alignment centres and they did not have the data for the car too, until now i had completed 3400 kms, now i had a indistrial vist to ahmedabad, mumbai, pune for which i travelled 2400 kms in my car and i face severe left shoulder pain in my trip for those 10 days, now i dropped my car again and 2 wheel alignments have been done again but the problem has not been solved as i went for the trial, service centre has opened up the disk of the car( which is a technical term of vw service centre to solve the issue via company ) service centre has acknowledged the issue now, but none of have the solution for this. Now as a part of doubt i went and took a test drive of both manual and automatic 1.0 demo cars and both of them were pulling to the left, which was shocking. As a part of doubt now i went to check skoda slavia and noticed that the car has same problem, till now i drove 4 cars and reported the same problem. See i have experience of around 2 lakh kms of driving in last 10 years in which i have driven 80kms on my VW Polo, so i have not faced an issue like this before. One suggestion came in as the road bankings are made on the left side so the car pulls on the left side but them someone suggest to drive the car wrong side on the same road and if car is pulling towards the divider, opposite to the banking, then the issue is serious, i did it. This is a serious issue and i have a tremendous shoulder pain. Writing this to big car channel, so that Vw should recognise this issue. Thank you🙏🏼

    Honda city have fuel tank capacity of 40 litres where as volkswagen virtus has 45 litres. So extra 5 litres would have definitely increased the range by 100 kms.

    I decided to buy creta manual diesel because I drive a lot but wanted to test other cars in the 18lakhs budget. I liked City diesel a lot until I test drive salvia. Slavia was a killer man. Keeping in mind, efficiency matter most for me. I had to choose the diesels so I gave up slavia and gave up city because of some cool features in Creta and being an SUV which makes more sense to for our great Indian roads. Creta manual diesel was an overall package. I recently drove a 400 kms highway trip with an average of 23.6kmpl.

    Diesel rocks all time! Please pass this video till it reaches Nitin Gadkari. Diesel is the future, I travel for 1000kms in a single stretch non stop, no electric car has that range and petrol is literally joke in terms of power and torque and mileage (combined).
    BS 6 Diesel engines have the same emission as Petrol engines, so that's the best step.
    Buy Diesel cars, save fuel, for 100km travelled Diesel cars consume around 5 liters whereas Petrol cars consume around 7+ liters.
    People wondering about the maintenance cost, please note its the same and the sales people hype that to sell more Petrol cars because profit margin on Petrol cars for a company is maximum due to low manufacturing cost of Petrol engine.

  • @dhanarajp3397
    @dhanarajp3397 ปีที่แล้ว +52

    It would have been great if you filled up tank in the end and posted the real mileage figures. Exactly the power wrt to mileage the diesel is the best. In petrol/turbo petrol when we drive a little bit enthusiastically the mileage reduces a lot compared to turbo diesel/diesel. Also the diesel is 8-10rs cheaper on avg. In city traffic condition, driving diesel manual is bit easier than petrol manual. But sadly manufactures are phasing out diesel engines.

      Manufacturers have to face out diesel because the government is against it

    • @1989rs500
      @1989rs500 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Govt is a huge issue in India. They MUST have the courage to tint diesel.
      Ie for commercial vehicles. Diesels should be cheaper and for PVs diesel as pricey as petrols.
      As of now all who buy petrols are fools. Cuz they r spending way more than sometimes the value of car after 1L kms.
      I can't believe how bad our Gov is in controlling fuel and its prices.

      Diesel is being phased out world wide in cars due to pollution and to meet new standards, amount of engineering along with cost it takes to have emissions under control is making it tough.
