- The Tata Punch EV and Tata Nexon EV are two of India’s most popular electric cars. While both fall into different segments and offer different value propositions, both have rated range figures that are close to each other. With the launch of the Punch EV, Tata has offered a lot of features and practicality at a more affordable price point than the Nexon EV. In this video, we run them side-by-side to see how their real world range compares.

A clarification as the on screen graphics may have led to some misunderstanding. The regenerative braking was not locked at L3/Max throughout the drive. As is standard practice in this series (as we have done with the Tiago EV, Tigor EV, eC3, XUV400, previous Nexon EV Max, Ioniq 5, EV6 etc), regen is adjusted as per the drive scenario.
Drive Specifications:
- AC: 22 degrees
- Regen: Flexible
- City/Incline speed: 40-60kmph
- Expressway: 85-100kmph
Which mode was used city or eco? or that too was adjusted as per the drive scenario?
Eco only
Ok
why use AC at 22 deg? for human body 26-27 is sufficient. (I personally use it even higher.) lower AC temp also reduces the range.
This was Punch EV Long or Mid range?
Punch -258 km
Nexon - 284 km
Thanks for saving me 20 mins
Avg speed ?
Hahahah😂
@@get4gopinot mentioned, Sadly
They said 260 for punch ev
Difference of 24km.
The results: Punch over Nexon
Price Top end: 16 lakhs vs 20 lakh
Range difference: 20-30 kms
space and size also matters
@@Devansh-Gautam i was gonna say that
Punch is 2nd generation ev if Nexon given same platform it will also give 20 to 25 more km range than now
@@Devansh-Gautamexactly
If you see the sceen punch ev drove at 130 wh/km and nexon was at 137 wh/km. Range of en EV heavily depends on how the person drives.
Had the nexon driver managed to generate 130wh/km the range of nexon would have been 307 km
I’ve come to the conclusion that both are classy cars
As an owner of empowered plus LR punch, loved this video, yes as said better charge it before it hits 10% as below that basically the car is unusable, but within 200 km range no ice comes close, I feel the day Evs give 400-500 km real world range on a single charge at about 4-5 lakhs premium over ice car price, ICE cars will be dead. Nothing comes close in the power, smoothness, acceleration and ease of use of an EV. I hit 2100 km in these 12 days of using it!loving every bit of it!kudos and thanks for sharing!
Glad you liked the video!
I get that you love your car, but don't be intimidated by these vloggers and think that EVs are the future. Just be informed of about whats happening around you!!!
I own an empowered plus lr punch mine is having charging issues from the day I bought the car till now I have driven 7k still it doesn’t charge at 30 kw and 25 kw only chargers at private 60kw chargers please help me …. Does your car have same issue??
@@196-harshavardhanaditya5, A Nexon EV Max owner here. Have driven 25,000 km in last 1.5 years. Lets see if I can help you with it. I dint understand your question. Can you please explain?
@196-harshavardhanaditya5 the punch ev is only capable of charging at 25kw in the fast charger unlike the nexon which can do I think 30kw. It is not a problem with your car , it is the max specification for the punch. Even mine charges at 25kw on the fast charger
Punch has all the features nexon has 🔥
This review of actual kilometers travelled in road conditions demonstrates the extreme irrationality of agencies who rate car mileage. Why, in India, can't they provide a near-road performance rating?
No comparison, enjoy both
A much needed battery test for Indian EVs, I have seen many battery tests of cars sold in US /Europe but I think this is the 1st for India, Great Job Guys!
1 suggestion for future video, co take passengers also on battery tests to that we can get more real usage.
10:48 Those who have used battery powered remote control toy cars can relate to this when they need to stop playing & recharge 😂
You dont recharge your phone. Do you live in stone age?
HPI e Savage owner here 😂😂😂
I was waiting for something like this for long time. You should do such comparison with ev rivals.
Nexon in the new frame of Punch EV will pack more battery & then the range difference will be substantial.
Punch ev is a pure ev platform designed from scratch whereas nexon is just a ice unit fitted with battery packs.
What were the charging cost at charging station so that peo0pe can have idea of
I remember ur kia ev6 or ionig video costed over 2000rs for 450km thats 5rs per km
i think it's near equal to an 23kmpl ice Car
Superb video 👌
☝️No.
Pls share fast charging cost for 0to100 or per km cost?
Do one video of comparison between CNG vs Electric car pls🙏
I am confused in Tiago AMT CNG or Tiago Ev XT LR.. which should I choose for minimum costs per km to drive in city? Pls reply 🙏
Superb videos thanks!
Why EV manufactures not putting Small Diesel Alternator in EVs? It will help to increase the range of vehicle. Also no need to build charging infrastructure.
Range extender EVs do exist but the combination of a large battery pack, electric motor and fuel motor to charge the battery can get difficult to package (space, added weight) and it adds to the vehicle’s cost as well.
There is scope, but no one seems keen to do it in India at least, especially since the government policy (at the moment at least) is pro pure EV
The technology is complicated
Its called a hybrid like hycross
It's called a plug-in hybrid
BYD have already have these technologies and models available in China
If you see the sceen punch ev drove at 130 wh/km and nexon was at 137 wh/km. Range of en EV heavily depends on how the person drives.
Had the nexon driver managed to generate 130wh/km the range of nexon would have been 307 km
Average Energy Consumption
Nexon - 137 wh/km
Punch - 130 wh/km
So, we can say nexon could have little more it was also at 130 final range would have been 290 in real world at 130 wh/km consumption.
Were these normal version or high range version ??
Punch EV Emp + LR , only city driving so far. Managed between 270 - 310. AC always on with ECON set. Regen at 2. Crappy software otherwise worth the money for the hassle free driving .
One thing I noticed in this video is that both punch and Nexon was driven like ICE cars, 130 and 137 Wh/km is quite high . Driving style for EVs are different the key is that energy drawn from the battery should be spent on moving the vehicle.
As a Punch EV Empowered S LR owner, I'd suggest you put the screenshot of the zConnect app trip details. That side by side comparison would also have been more informative
But what about when members increase in the cabin . How much range it will give 😊❤
6:21 Top Gear trio kicked in!!!
I have the punch empowered plus LR have driven it for 5K km, as to what have noticed is don’t use the regen in highways and use it in city so eco with no regen in highways and eco with L3 or L2 regen in city will improve your range and also have to be careful with the throttle input so has to get less energy consumption numbers that is the KWhr/KM
🤣🤣🤣 Tushar's karaoke is the best part of this video 🤣🤣🤣
😁😁
How many hours you took to complete the task... Purely driving time?? In the beginning of video Punch Showed 233 kms but given 258. Nexon showed 289 but given 284...
Been using Tata Punch EV (Adventure LR) from last 2 months. 260-270km is the lowest any regular user can get however, after ownership experience one can get around 300-320kms easily if driven softly.
Thanks mate.. im just waiting to get my punch ev LR empowered version and dying to get my hands on.. so no more confusion in air its punch.ev 🎉
These range tests are best for bachelors. Hope to see a range test with atleast 4 on board and some luggage
Good Information and excellent Rap on the nexon Beeps.
Best type of car reviews ever. Thank you guys
Our pleasure!
Great range test guys! But why is the camera in the Nexon set to 30 fps but the camera in the punch is capturing at 60 fps? Please make sure that the frame rate is the same throughout the video! Spoils the watching experience a bit. Everything else is great!
These range numbers remind me of election results. Not much to choose between Indi and Nda. But Nda is bigger and more powerful.
Punch ev actually gives a range min of 350km in echo with regen level 3, your driving pattern might be wrong you pushed accelerator that's why range down. If you take care of KWH energy consumption then range won't get drop
In highway regen is pretty useless.
You turn it off and enjoy the smooth glide unless you are in slope you just switch it for 2
With added weight of 4 passengers its, again different
This is not a hypermiling test.
Highways in India except expressways has speed limit of 80kph .
None seems to bother about it
If you ask me testing at 70kph is not hypermilijg
I get avg 310-320km at 70kph from 100 to 8 percent..
These are LFP batteries capable to go below 5 percent.
This is awesome, I can push to get around 310 in the city but not always . How do you manage 350. Would you please care to share?
Same here I do pull about 350 km range on tata punch adventure ❤
You have to keep AC off though still I can get about 310-300 km with ac at @23°c
One big mistake gentleman : having region mod 3 level for whole journey
Regenerative braking is for advantage not for disadvantage if you use that on a flat road when there is no need of breaking you specifically losing 45% of the kinetic energy you created by using the previous acceleration. All you have to do is to use zero level for flat roads and hills. Use level 1 for normal breaking, level 2 for traffic. Level 3 is only made for simulate original breaking. But what you did there makes you use the acceleration over and over again. This misuse of regenerative braking make you lose more kilometres rather than gaining. The trick is when you are riding on high speed you see a stop start using the first level reduce some speed then use the second level reduce more speed and when it comes very close you can use the third level and reduce speed to 8 to 10 km per hour. Ultimately saving your brake pads from high friction/hard use.
nexon could have reach 350 km easily
Hope this wil help
Exactly.. I own punch ev empowered plus LR.. initially I used to drive with regen L2.. then used to get 280km range..from last one week am using L1 regen.. now I am getting 300-320km.. AC usage was minimal in both regen levels
Absolutely correct
I agree with you 100% . I used to set level 2 and it is absolutely waste even in city. Best is level 1.
I also have doubt eco or city mode which one is giving more range. In my user experience I didn't find much difference
Using sports mode with regen 0 in highway help cover more distance?
Totally agree here, regen should be used only for braking or the natural rolling speed is higher than what we need. using L3 is detrimental.
Now that's what you call learning with entertainment. Nice video guys, keep up the good work 👍
Glad you enjoyed it, 🙏

A similar style with the Nexon, Kona and MG ZS Ev would be amazing.
Is this Punch ev 25 kw battery or 35bkw battery which u tested ?

Punch EV Long Range
@@zigwheels Generally from claimed figure 100 km can be minused and remaining is the real world rangenfor EV cars but am surprised for a claimed range of 421, 260km is real world means it's worst... Tata has to do some optimisation... For 25kw battery claimed range is 315 then the real world will be 150km means it's very worse
@@zigwheelscan u do a range test on 25kw battery too..in the entire TH-cam there is noone done this ...if u do this it will be first one ..
Nexon long range ? Or short range ?
Mind you, the claimed range of the non Max Nexon EV was 312 km when it launched.
Its never the same with EVs. It wont give you what you expect from it. There are numerous complaints about how Evs are performing poorly in Mileage.
Great Content. Now Please swap the vehicles and drive the same route... so that driving style factor can be eliminated. :)
Bros gaana, Rap whatever is better than most music artists today
💯
Pls do these range tests with a. But a more realistic scenario
1. Two or three people in the car
2. Luggage
3. Stop and start with people
A single driver test is a bit inaccurate.
Solo driving is not always the case
I have seen electric cars like Tiago, Nexon trying to speed up unnecessarily to show that they paid extra.....but in a hybrid or a ICE car, they will laugh their ass out on a highway...as any damn ICE car can do minimum of 400km in a single tank!
For Best Range, Use City Mode, Regen Level 1, AC on 24 in Eco. Light foot on throttle and maximum utilization of Regen in Traffic conditions. My year and a half old Nexon EV Prime (30KwH) giving me 260-270 Kms of range (50% highway + 50% City drive) with above settings
Nexon is smaller inside the cabin than punch
Lol
Yes 😂😂
As ive owned Punch EV for 2 months, come to realise that if the outside temperature is High, then it impacts range badly, when outside it was 41 i was getting a range of around 230. Now the temperature in Bangalore has reduced and i easily get range of 260-270, which is extrapolated, based on the average energy consumption.
The important factor in an EV is range and that too when its below 10%, pratical scenarios are always charge when its below 15 or 20% like we do with other gadgets like smartphones or tablets, but you should see the range left so that in case of emergencies you can take a call. Tata post sales is always an issue with EV and such electrical issues put consumers on a whole lot of problems
In the term equivalent of kmpl that we all know:
Punch EV did roughly 7.7km/kWh
Nexon EV did roughly 7.3km/kWh
So Punch EV is roughly 5.5% more efficient than the Nexon.
Not to boast but my Tigor EV first gen - I do 220-240 real world range. In this heat :) and that’s with decent amount of charge left :)
16-20 lacs for a malfunctioning car and range anxiety? No thanks, I'll stick to Petrol Manual for now. EVs still have a long way to go.
Those are not malfunction.... They are glitches they go away when you turn off the car for 10 mins and reset.... It's common in Tata (not any actually problem with the car)
@@hornet4760 right, we need to adjust things. EV Companies wont compromise in price irrespective malfunction or glitches.
It’s just need a software update once.

We definitely plan to once we get our hands on the car for a few days.
you are driving on highway, you should turn off the regen as it grabs the wheels and consumes more energy, you will see the improvements
Its because of you people we get confidence while buying ev
Ive been driving Nexon ev first gen for 3 yrs now. Done 60k kms. The only fault after everything is SERVICE. Tata SERVICE sucks. Been using Hyundai, Maruti, Toyota Mahindra too for long time ( all cars in the family not mine) none of them have such bad service experience like TATA. In total 3-4 months of my cars life has been spent in the Service center. Most recently it took 1 month for my AC to be fixed bcoz the "heat conductor" part was being shipped from Pune, then Jaipur, then Delhi, in this heatwave. Part cost 17k, 1k for labour, price aside, it was a harrowing experience for my wife who rides it daily for 10kms in the city. Hearing the same from a lot of my friends around the country too, so its not particulaly my city's service centers fault. Improve parts, supplies and take good care of people in the service center TATA, otherwise all the reputation going down the drain.
Thank you for sharing your experience. It’s vital for any car to get the basics right, otherwise issues can overshadow even the best tech advancements or features the car offers
Tata service is great in prerana motors bangalore.driving my nexon ev for over 2 years now
I'm a Nexon user,
In the real world, with a single occupant, a/c-on at around 25degree c, only city driving, it easily gives around 3.3 kms per percentage, consistently. Without AC one can get another 10 km extra.
With full occupancy, and AC on it gives 310 kms, easily.
If one can use cruise control on the highway, speed under 80 kmph, mileage will be 330-340 kms with AC on. With full occupancy, around 320kms with AC on.
Of course it completely depends on the driving behaviour. 😊 One easily learns over a period of time.
मेरा तेरे से बड़ा है, was epic line , 😂😂😂😂
Frustrating slow is better than walking. Slow and steady wins the race 🐢
Beautiful real world usage, including the infamous errors of Tata 😂👍
Bullshit mine brand new “Tiago ev LR” is giving 130 sometimes and sometimes it gives 140. So disappointing and the service centre has the worst feedback response 😔
TVs are garbage, My neon with claimed 312 gave a max of 180. Such an unreliable car, at the service centre at least once a month
Maruti will launch a series hybrid car , which will resolve these range anxiety issues
U shld have included xuv 400 also in this test
I am using adventure LR at Bangalore getting 310+ km
U should switch off the ac or use it intermittently and then check the range
I own a Tiago EV LR and pretty happy with the vehicle.
But ya it also throws up a lot of error like the Punch ev did it in this video.
In the last 9 month of owning my Tiago, I had to take it to the service center 5 times (excluding service visits) to resolve those errors and malfunction and defective parts.
I must say there are a lot of Quality issues with TATA vehicle and the service centers are not sensitises and trained enough to actually resolve those issues once and for all
Thank you for sharing your experience!
i clocked 160 km on Nexon ev on highway and one ghat in 49%. Driving around 80-110 kmph
i little bit confus, in highway 80-100 km/h Nexon ev how much range provide? (Before 10%)
@@bsnlsvn5595 around 3.2 kms per 1%. Upto 10% you get around 270-280 kms of range
Please test with no regeneration.
I hav Punch ev with City driving mode without Ac real time range 290
AC does make a BIG difference to the overall range
250 kms with single person in the car and you feel its impressive no family and no luggage on highway drive.
I am getting 330+km on highway with 5 adults and Ac,speed 80 to 90km/hr from nexon LR top end
Have you tried more then 100kmph speed.... How much does it given...( For curiosity i am asking)
Evs are the future may be, but now its all waste of money!!
My nexon mr emp completed 17000kms in last 6months
For daily Heavy use punch is more practical...
My thoughts: EV bubble has popped. Resale value of EVs and Charging are biggest bottleneck. You need to adapt to your vehicle rather than vehicle extending your lifestyle.
For people travelling over 100 kms a day in city traffic, EV does make a sense. If it's economical for you, go for it. Everyone has different need, you need to figure out your priorities first.
should've also mentioned Wh/km whenever you mentioned % & kms covered.
At present EVs can be a daily drive Vehicle but not a touring, Overlanding, long drive vehicle
Do the same video after a year and tell us how much the battery has degraded by educing the range. Also good luck trying to sell these vehicles after a year or two.
मेरी नेक्सोंन 100% चार्ज पर सिर्फ 100 किमी चलती है अभी तक चलती है १.९ साल पुरानी है
It may be good if your daily running is strictly below 100kms and you don't entertain spontaneous plans, you hire a taxi if you have to go out of station (300 km + each side), you have a house where you have personal parking where you can install a fast charger or a normal charger or you live in a wonderful society which provides it..
You drive just to get from point A to B and don't enjoy driving as much..
You make sure you buy the top end or live with the features given by the manufacturer because after accessories in EV voids your warranty.
If you tick all the boxes for an EV go for it😅
Just like magic wands in Harry Potter an EV chooses its own master..
One thing tata sucks at is there sensors calibration. I own Tata Nexon for last 2 years and every drive it throws TPMS error, and in crawling traffic it shows AMT error
These faults creeping up is not an uncommon fault in EVs. EV manufacturers have put puny little 12V lead acid batteries for the in car electronics and the on board computer. The 12V battery is supposed to get charged from the HV battery and in some instances this may not be working well and the 12V battery runs low, which throws a lot of computer errors. Tesla has of late, replaced the 12V lead acid battery with a 12V Li battery, whether ir decreases the risk of spurious error reports remains to be seen. Early adopter issues!
Guys pls try hybrid car in same manner. Drive till last drop of petrol nd share how much it can be drove in single tank. As maruti claimed 1200+. Here tata’s claim 421 in single charged but it’s drove 260 km in punch.

How stupid is that decision to not show DTE when the battery drops below 10% tho? Baffling
I own PUNCH EV EMPOWERED LR
i get 310-330 km without any expertise. I am noob in driving
People who knows about ev have extracted 350kms.
I drive at constantly in regen 3 and at 65-75kph most of the time in highways
With all the comments I see.
Now i understood. I should not use regen 3 on flat roads. Ill use regen 0. And if i need to slow down ill use regen 1
Or moderate traffic illnuse regen 2
Or completely halt ill shift to regen 3 whole driving
If byd came into india fully .Punch ev price will come down by 3 lac atleast
Planning to switch Tiago to Nexon
dont
To be safe consider your EV will give you 150 KM max. Weight, batt health, road conditions and what not could effect the distance attained by an EV.
