Door Gap Welding - Filing Door Edges for a Perfect Gap - GTO RestoMod (Ep 47)

  • We need to get the edge of the doors sweetened up and straight so they will look super nice aligned with the quarter panel. We will be using the YIG Welder to add material to the door edges then we will grind, sand and file the edge to perfection. Taking out the crooked door edges will help us get those perfect door gaps we all want.
    If you have a project you would like to showcase at the end of one of my videos just email me a few pics and a short description to: foothillpaintandfabrication@gmail.com

    Very nice work Mark. Most channels don't show the close up shots of the finished product like you do. I appreciate you showing all of it so we know what to expect if we try this ourselves.

    Man, did I find out about fixing door gaps on my project! Thought I was almost done with the body work.
    Pretty much stalled on the panel truck right now.......
    BTW Thanks for keeping the videos around 20 minutes long.

      Yeah, these longer videos are better because of the information you gather from it.

      20 minutes is about right, asking me to invest an hour or an hour and a half in something is a bit much IMHO.

    • @FoothillPaintandFabrication

      Let's pull out of that stall and get at least 1 day a week devoted to the panel. Door gaps and panel alignment often gets left to later in projects when it needs to be at the very start. You got this!
      I try really hard to keep the videos under 30 minutes and I do realize all of your time is valuable. This Mark guy talks to much and makes the videos longer than they need to be 😜
      I am trying to keep them condensed but informative and I love the feedback so keep it coming. I do appreciate all of you.

    Great work on that door! It remains to be seen how much work I'll need for my truck but now I can see the process.

    • @FoothillPaintandFabrication

      Thanks Doug. Those trucks do not have the nicest door gaps. In the 50's if it shut and didn't fly open going around a corner it was all good. As you saw on Darren's truck it is possible to sweeten them up though.

    Great video Mark. Learned a lot. I don’t imagine the ‘49 had this much care in the fitment. Most things seem pretty loose. But I suspect I’ll need to use this technique in some areas to even get it close!
    Bo said to say high. Dropped off my body on Monday. It’ll be ready in the summer when there’s (hopefully) no rain.
    In the meantime mean time I’ll get a booth made in the shop.
    Again, nice video
    Thanks.

      Thanks Robert. Back in 49 they were happy they stayed latched so nice gaps didn't even come into play. I can't wait to see the body all stripped and clean like it was when it was built.

    Great video , Mark! About to do a preliminary fitting of my front sheetmetal, but I know I have some door to quarter panel gap work to make it all look right. Thanks for sharing! Great advice!

      You are very welcome Charlie, we are all in this together and have much of the same issues to work through. This stuff isn't exciting or fun but it has to be done and putting in the time pays off big time later.

  • @DonBrantly

    Well done Mark. My 37' has a similar quarter panel gap to door edge and I was thinking I will use JB Weld on bare steel and then file it back to position... needs about a 1/16" x 6". Was initially considering mig welding the spot but you're take on chipping that area makes sense.

    • @FoothillPaintandFabrication

      As long as you use the filler on the door jamb side and not the door edge you should be fine. 1/16" is nothing really. I have never used JB weld and painted over it. Do some research and maybe even some adhesion testing if you cannot find documentation on what will adhere properly. I don't see a problem though.

  • @midnighttutor

    I like your double dolly technique...very innovative! What size filler rod are you using? I have found that to add a lot of material a 3/32 rod can be jammed into even a low amp puddle e.g 19 gauge single thickness, and build up pretty quickly.

    • @FoothillPaintandFabrication

      Thanks
      On the drivers side door I started off with 3/32" rod because I wanted a lot of build up but it cooled the weld so much it caused me to linger longer than I wanted so I switched to 1/16" rod and the puddle seemed to flow together better. When I started learning to TIG thin sheet metal (I am still learning to be sure) I was using .030 mig wire or even .024 mig wire but I found it too thin and I couldn't feed it fast enough so I switched to 1/16 and my welds and heat soak improved a lot. I think I learn something new each time I push on the peddle.

    Is there any reason that you couldn't weld the A-pillar cover on? I'm thinking about doing it to my 67

    • @FoothillPaintandFabrication

      Do you mean weld up the seams where it meets the lower windshield base?
      The A pillar covers are really glued and screwed on well to the point it is like they are welded on. Most people don't even know they come off. Only down side would be future repairs I can think of.
