    We have a number of video on this issue. If anyone is having issues with their hybrid, please "contact the YOUCANIC" team (Google it). We can help you troubleshoot the problem FREE of charge as long as you can send us the codes. We need the codes from these four modules (Engine ECU, DC/DC converter, BMS, Power Electronic Module). Once we have the codes, we can tell you if you have a bad power electronic module, hybrid battery or both. If your vehicle is at the dealership, ask them for the list of codes and send them to us. If you want to ship the car to Baltimore, we can repair it at a fraction of the dealer cost. We love these cars and believe that is a sin to pay over $10k to keep these cars running.

    The S400 is a living nightmare, period!!! The so-called "hybrid" fails, with the Power Control Module, and the High Voltage Generator; the car will simply not start and leave you stranded, or worse! And the cost of replacement is $12,000! And no you can't simply purchase a used unit, because they all suffer from the same burn-out failure, and no one can work on these cars; even the main dealer only had one technician. I had two units replaced under warranty; each with the same issues. It is a serious design fault that Mercedes tried to ignore, and brush under the carpet, even though there were warnings sent to the dealership. Replacement units are ordered from German on an "exchange" policy, so normally no one gets to see what failed including the technician, as the unit is sealed. As luck would have it, my dealer forgot to return the failed unit and left it in the boot; so after asking if they wanted it back, which they declined, I decided to dismantle it, to see what the cause was. The Power Control Module has three separate phases which receive voltage from three generators attached to the fly-wheel. One of the phases had been subjected to so much power it had caught fire and melted the coil wire in half! Oh, and let's not forget the Power Control Module, is a sealed air-tight unit, and the S400 had a 60amp generator, so imagine how many amps had to be sent through the wire to catch fire and melt it! My car even after the two replacement units, would start once, and then it may or may not start again, and don't forget it has a stop/start system that "can't" be turned off, so every time you go below 7mph the shuts down, and could leave you stranded with no power. So dangerous was this; imagine trying to turn across oncoming traffic and finding your engine isn't restarting, that my insurance company determined the car dangerous to the point they totaled a 4 yrs old S-class and paid me out! I love the S-class, so I purchased a reliable S63 with no safety issues. So if you are tempted by an S400, please don't the cars can be lethal!

      Thank you for the feedback. We talk to S400 owners all the time, and this is a very common experience unfortunately. We have had S400 Hybrids shipped from California to our shop in Baltimore to be fixed because the dealer was too expensive. Shipping that car from cost to coast and back was $3500. It still made more sense to ship it for the owner. There are a few points that we would like to emphasize:
      - At dealerships the power electronic module is around $11k while hybrid battery replacement around $15k.
      - Having seen so many S400, we believe that this vehicle does have a design flow. In fact, it has a several design flow with the hybrid system. Disabling the automatic start/stop function can help the hybrid system last a lot longer. It can be done.
      - We have fixed S400 that dealerships misdiagnosed. The problem was completely different than what the dealer had said. We have those documented too. Most dealerships don't work on S400 on regular basis. Some of them don't even know how to place the S400 in neutral when the car doesn't start. Yes, you can.
      - The power electronic module overheats and fails inside due to location and also to the way it operates. We open those units up and rebuild them with upgraded parts.
      - Lastly, most mechanics don't want to touch an S400. We have had several shipped to Baltimore from all over the country.
      Enjoy your S63 AMG!

      @@YOUCANIC I'm curious how can you disable the stop-start, which kicks in at below 7mph? Looking at the wiring schematics, the signal the stop and start the engine is part of the ME-SFI [ME] control unit using the electric motor. The automatic start can only be triggered if an automatic engine stop has been triggered, the protection switch of the high-voltage battery is closed; there are no faults in the high-voltage on-board electrical system via the ME-SFI, and the high-voltage interlock is open. Additionally, if the car is fitted with Distronic Plus even more issues exist. If the radar sensor control unit (SGR) with adaptive cruising control, withdraws approval from the automatic engine stop, this triggers an automatic engine start and Disctronic Plus can accelerate the vehicle . If approval is withdrawn by the ACC [KLA]control unit, the fully integrated transmission control (VGS) control unit or the energy management system, the braking torque must be high enough, over a specified deceleration torque to trigger an automatic engine start. Furthermore, the entire system is being calculated by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit in order to calculate and check for plausibility, of the fuel injection and ignition coils function, depending if the start is a torque-led start or a speed-led start. In other words, 31 separate control modules or components are connected to the ME-SFI module which controls the Automatic engine start. Also, the Power Electronics Module doesn't just fail due to overheating, or location, if that were the case all replacement parts would fail, regardless of their quality, making replacement of the unit futile; but rather due to excessive amperage being generated by the Electric Motor switching between individual operation modes, i.e. motor mode/alternator mode. Basically, the motor has three busbars; these three phases are regulated depending on the operation mode of the rotor position. If one of these phases fails, or the temperature threshold is exceeded, and controlled protection of the system is not limited, excessive power can be generated and overheating of the Power Electronics Module occurs, resulting in the eventual complete destruction of the affected phased regulator within the Power Electronics Module. Mercedes does not want you to know the true facts, being that it was part of their flagship S-class model and their blanket refusal to acknowledge the true reason behind the nightmare, not to mention the cost to many unsuspecting customers, who are still buying this piece of junk!

    I'm curious, what are the connections to the vehicle is it only the HV main wires as the BMS is all internal, or does the BMS talk to the vehicle? If there are additional connections other than the 2 HV wires, how many are there and do you know what they do?

    How much can I expect the cost of repair ? Tons of e300 hybrid are going cheap compares to non hybrid. If the price is ok, thinking of buying one

    • @YOUCANIC
      @YOUCANIC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      At the dealership power electronic module replacement costs around $10k. Hybrid battery replacement costs $15k. Those repairs can be done for less than $5k if you find a good indipended shop. The problem is that it is hard to find a shop that will touch these cars. We can help as well if you are willing to ship a car to Baltimore. We have had S400 shipped to Baltimore from as far as the west coast.

    Any way of totally removing the hybrid system from the car and turn it into a regular gas or diesel powered conventional car?

    • @YOUCANIC
      @YOUCANIC  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes but it is very labor intensive job and complex to remove the whole hybrid system and basically convert it to a S350 gasoline. Also requires coding as well of multiple ecus.
