the creator of the movie already confirmed the ending of the movie will never happen, the song that plays in the end credit scene talks about how long he will have to work to buy the house.
@@Kinos141 Yes. But stairs are also normal in Korea! It is not that they exist IRL. It is that they have been purposely and frequently used to symbolic effect. There are quite a lot of scenes that take place in the bathroom by the toilet. It is a visual metaphor, much like the ascending and descending of stairs.
Gotta give it to Da-hye, instead of screaming and fainting she's carrying a bleeding grown man on her shoulders. She's pretty hardcore actully and seemingly in love.
Buggabones he might have crawled up the stairs so she didn’t go all the way down where the door was. It would make more sense that she found him if he was in the kitchen than the basement
@@christalcavanaugh I don't think that'd br possible as Kevin had a rock smack his head at least twice, maybe she just didn't want to think about it. That's a pretty traumatic situation as she found her boyfriend covered in blood and her father and possibly her brother died.
The guy from the basement closed the cabinet door in the basement after drinking plum water. That's why Da-Hye never saw the bunker because the door was already closed. :)
Another reason why Kevin's "friend" offers him the position as the tutor, is because he doesn't believe that Kevin will cross the line to try and get the girl, because he's poor. He wants to control the situation for his own benefit. If other university tutors would have come and taken a shot at her, they could take it, and he couldn't do anything about it. But his friend, who isn't in school and who's not rich, is perfect for the job. Everything he did was for his own benefit.

@@sleepae The rock was fake because At the end when you see Ki woo getting rich and his father can finally come up from the basement It was actually his imagination (which the rock portrayed) The rock was fake so the scenes that came afterwards It was all fake And also there was a song playing (Korean) in which there was a line which said Meaning: for a poor guy to reach this level would take 934(i dont remember) years which means even if Ki woo worked his a** off he still couldt buy the mension
One big detail I caught was that when the rich mother and poor father drive home from the grocery store, the father overheard the mother say that the rain (the same rain that flooded and destroyed the Kim’s family’s home) was a blessing because it cleared the grass or something of that sort. An eye-opening thing in regards to people of the higher class becoming blind to the harsh realities the lower class face
I caught this!!! She's blessing the rain so they could come home and have a big party with all their richy friends all while not even giving a shit that the person driving her around and picking up hors d'oeuvres had his life destroyed by the rain and all the sympathy she could muster was holding her nose to the smell.

When kevin found out the stone in the flood he realized his bestfriend even look down on him because it was a fake stone. hes friend only wanted him to tutor her because he knows kevin is poor and he wouldnt stand a chance to start a relationship with his status.
Fun fact: The stone was never intentionally supposed to float -- apparently that just happened (as it is a prop in reality) and Bong Jo Hoon thought it was actually cool and decided to keep it in the movie. So as much meaning as you'd like it to have, it might not extend to that specific meaning.
This is why english majors are useless people. Over interpreting shit thats not even there. And the latter statement were explicitly said in the movie.
In the scene where he's asking him to tutor her and he asks "Why ask me" and he replies "Well, you know..." I thought it was saying the son was gay. No. Just poor.
I didn't see the ghost flashback scene too well when I watched it, didn't even really see the "ghost". But watching this and seeing it so clearly I nearly shit myself lmao
The Parks having sexual role play of what they perceive poor people to be like, leaving underwear everywhere and doing drugs, shows the disconnection. Kinda like how Gucci sells $870 sneakers that purposefully looks dirty.
Exactly I seen it as fetishization of the poor, how it’s “exotic” to “slum it”. How being poor is debasing yourself when you are rich. It also implied that mr park probably has been with prostitutes (it’s common for business men to do, some even purposely pick up low end hookers for the extra thrill).
@@themakeupism in Korea and Japan it's pretty common for businessmen to host and entertain clients at bars and whorehouses. Even more so when dealing with VIPs, K/JPOP idol hopefuls are prostituted out by their agencies for these events.
I also noticed that the dad did exactly as his wife said he would. When the family was talking about what they would do if or when "shit hit the fan," that he would run just like a cockroach and that is what he did after stabbing guy.
Ok but remember when he pretended like he was gonna hurt the mom and said he was just joking? He was showing he wasn't going to actually live like a roach if given the choice. Does a roach one day say they've had enough of living off of scraps and kill a human? No. But when shit hit the fan and he was given the choice to either help out the rich dad, effectively continuing to live like a roach, he stopped pretending and killed the rich dad. Sure he had to go into hiding, but he would have been hiding either way and he knew that. At least he did it on his own terms and stood up for himself. Even if that meant having to hide because the law wouldn't care about him but instead persecute him.
The "buy me drugs" quote (and the sex scene) was used because it was thematically relevant. Both Mr. & Mrs. Park were disgusted by the thought of the previous driver having sex and doing drugs in his car, yet they both fetishisize the idea. I thought she was on drugs at first too, but I came to realization that she doesn't have to lift not one finger in the house, including interacting with her own kids, the most she does or can do is just laze around.
Yeah I definitely got that fetishization vibe as well, particularly with how the panties are specifically described as being "cheap" and if the wife wears them that would turn the husband on. I'd imagine the wife has a great many underwear, but likely all high end, therefore the idea of her wearing something so "lower" can be seen as taboo and naughty. It demonstrates another way in which these wealthy people are condescending towards the lower class and by using it in roll play they essentially are making fun of the hardship others have to deal with like being addicted to drugs.
Ya this was how I read it. When he asked if she still had the panties he found in his car, it was followed by her asking for drugs it was definitely a role play thing
Exactly. It's the same way their son was treating Native American culture, as a form of entertainment for the "aesthetics", not really understanding the true meaning of it but simply something he can enjoy by shooting arrows around the house, acting like a savage and camping out in the rain. It's this idea of "living" through something that they never have to fear - being poor - that they can roleplay it. It's the disconnect that rich people have from the real lives of people that aren't them.
When Kevin found the rock, it floats indicates that the rock is fake as well as the delusional about the luxurious life they are hoping for Edit: and that's also the reason why he didn't die when the man smashed the rock on to Kevin's head
Bong Joon stated that he didnt mean for the rock to float but kept it in the take anyway, nevertheless the theme of false hope is still relevant in the film
There are many interpretations of stones. Living the last rich house is a dream. You can see that Kevin's lips are smile slightly when dreaming. And if you look closely at the beginning of the movie, the kim family ignores the PC room worker, and the pizza worker ignores the family. There are act out of line. This is an important topic of the movie. 1.Kane's stone is no different from other stones (discarded in a valley) 2. The rich man's dignity is just a virtual image from the wealth, and the other side was nothing different. His business is (virtuality machine seller.) 3. The lower class dreams of earning money, but they make can't plans. there are Fails.
The scene where they were running back to their house is kind of like rats running back down to the sewers. All the trash and that it was raining and flooding makes it more similar.
one thing that stuck to me is when Jessica is told that she would fit into the life of luxury but at the end, she is the only one who would never experience that life

This smell thing in the movie has some truth in it, not necessarily smelling poor, but people smell differently based on their diet, lifestyle, location, etc.
Hallish Mahy Im not completely sure how class and location affects pheromones, but yes, humans do emit pheromones! Sometimes it doesnt matter how much someone focuses on their hygiene, the pheromones they give off will set certain people off. Its a part of humans that refuses to evolve along with the rest of the brain and body; a person’s scent will both attract and detract others. I wouldnt really worry about it however, its more or less just a self-defense system, you dont even really notice it unless you actively smell for it
The song played during credits was written by the director and sang by Kevin. The original name was 564 years which is the amount of time he would need to save money to follow what he said on the letter
Sierra think about Kevin’s situation, he’s poor and hopefully thinking that he can work to get to that point. It’s not about being brain damaged or whatever, it’s the mentality a lot of people who find themselves in poverty think. That if they work hard they can get rich like all of these people they see when it’s not the case

The money he makes will be to just get by. He literally can't afford anything else, and the storm was supposed to exemplify exactly why saving money will be hard. There's no way out of his lifestyle without something of a miracle, which he blew in this very movie.
I find it funny that this whole movie could have been avoided if the mom had just said "alright, we'll make sure that your husband is fed and taken care of"
I think that's a big point of the film tho, the cutthroat attitude amongst people who share a similar situation and how once one of them got the power in the dynamic they were unwilling to share to too scared of letting it go.
The actor of the basement guy (Park Myung-Hoon) said that Director Bong made Park’s father the first audience of the movie before the movie was released officially. Park’s father has suffered from an illness, but he wished he could watch the film before something happened to him. Also, the father was a big fan of Director Bong. Director Bong decided that Park’s father watched the movie privately with his son, Director Bong, and other staffs before the movie was premiered officially. Now his father is blind, but he was happy he could watch Parasite before he got blind. Director Bong is not just a great film maker, but also he is a great man!

RIGHT? I got this vibe from the rich family that they don't really care about each other on a deeper level. Mr. Park sees his wife as incompetent with housework and the like, but she's obviously younger than him and attractive. She's a trophy wife. Their daughter seems like she often times doesn't want much to do with them, seemingly always on her phone and even having that outburst about how her brother's art is all an act. The boy is probably the only real innocent one there, being influenced and groomed into that exploitative position from his family, he doesn't know anything different. But their relationships don't seem genuine, even to mother to son or mother to daughter. Mrs. Park threw a little boy an extravagant party for his birthday with adult guests, her friends and I'm sure her husband's colleagues. It wasn't REALLY for her son, it was for her to flaunt her wealth and status while also parading "Look how good of a mom I am!" Even though all she did was plan it, she didn't actually do any of the work. She's also very unaware about her daughter's relationship with Kevin. Yes, they're hiding it, but she doesn't seem very active in her daughter's life at all.
@@GGKittyXO remember when the mom was eating noodles because the little boy didn't want it? And then her daughter got mad saying something along the lines of "you didn't ask me if I wanted noodles, you asked Da-Song and dad but they didn't want it so you ate it all without even asking if I wanted it" yea this kinda backs you up on how the rich family are rather cold towards each other.
R. Tolmach Ms.Park isn’t getting exploited at all😭😭do you see her lifestyle if all she needs to do is act as a trophy wife to be able to live that extremely comfortable lifestyle instead of working a hard job like owning a buissnes or going to college 😹
I read this article about how the koreans that live in those semi basement homes also have the same problem. The floods, the mold stinking up their clothes. The drunks peeing outside, the lack of privacy. It's so sad how for us it's a funny scene when the dad and son are shooing off the drunk or when the Parks 'can smell the poor' off of the Kims, but it's a real struggle.
Yeah, my mum lived in exact same conditions. She told me she was very poor but only after i watched parasite and saw the semi basement, i realised how poor she really was.. She told me she would get riduculed by her richer friends for the strange smell that lingered on her, and said she could really relate to Mr kim in that sense. I cried because no one deserves to live like that.
The scene with the drunk is funny just cause they are both so bad at it. As for the smell and all, I didnt find it funny, but it did make me kinda confused, especially since they were suddenly supposedly making a lot of money and still werent able to get around this. Idk I assumed at least the mom could keep some of her clothes and wash it with the Parks without them noticing. Why do they only notice it on the dad? I thought the smell would be gone after the flood scene and they used donated clothing, but no? The flood scene kinda felt out of place, but knowing this I guess they just wanted to show that its another issue the people living in those conditions have to face.
@@lindaramirez1852 I mean sure it is, but the movie is grounded in reality, the Parks arent imagining the smell, its there. So there must be a reason for it in the real world. BambiLena666 no I mean sorry it was really early when I wrote this but basically they live in a basement and that smell stays and lingers in stuff after a while they live there for emote then two years from what we’re seen so that smells is pretty stuck also if you think about it the parks grew up rich they’ve always had clean homes and good hygiene also imagine using the same soup perfumes and smells for years it’s just all you smell and have so them being poor they must not use perfumes and must opt for cheap detergent as well how they wash their clothes MR .Park speaks about how he smells as if a boiled rag so they must boil their clothes to clean them. Idk sorry it’s long
The ending + the realization that Ki-Woo would never see his dad again had me sitting and staring at a wall for 30 minutes after I got home from the theater
Same. That part broke me after watching the film. It was almost worse him knowing where his father is because now all he has in hope for something that will never happen,
As Pooped By Anakin Skywalker Well Ki-Woo writes a plan to get enough money and buy the mansion to see his dad again. But his dad already mentioned that the best plan is no plan. Hence Ki-woo’s plan will never happen. The director also mentioned that the final song rolling through credits was to signify that it will take 545 years (somewhere around that amount) To make enough money to buy a mansion like that. That’s why it’s sad that we’ll never see the happy ending, happen.
True, one of the biggest tricks of modern capitalism, pretending everyone can work their way up the socio-economic ladder if only they work hard and well, but the reality is its about who you know. The dad even says so, when getting a job as the Parks driver, in normal conditions there would be 400 people applying for the job and he would never get the job even tho Mr Parks thinks his driving is amazing. Expensive Universities dont really give you ''the best learning opportunities'' they give you access to contacts. All of this further insures that money and job opportunities remain within a selected group of connected people.
My best friend got 4 job opportunites cuz her dad knew everyone in the small town. Meanwhile my families super introverted so I have like, 0 luck, no-one in my family knows anyone x-x
The sausage skewer scene- Sausages are the unwanted parts of a pig when Geun-sae is stabbed with the skewer, it is reflective of how he is an unwanted part of society. Another point, Korean subways are MUCH nicer than American ones- cleaner and a popular form of transportation since Korea is very small. This could be reflective of how much the rich family is ignorant of how the poorer class. Also, this is my theory, but it's apparent Da-hye feels ignored in her family- that her younger brother is more favored (when she was complaining about how no one asked her is she wanted ramen). This is could be reflective of how Korean society is very patriarchal (favoring the sons, and often ignoring the daughters). Perhaps that is why she clings to the tutors- because they show her attention she wants.
I think it was interesting how all the members of the Kim family had their own talents and were appreciated for their ability once finally given a chance to prove themselves. It took some criminal acts to get that chance though.
Was it really criminal? Or was it just playing the system. Things went to shit because they weren't honest. If they were honest things would have ended much happier. The poor lie. That's the lesson learned.
Omega Man That’s with all poor people around the world. Poverty creates talent and drive. But an talents cost money to show. So the best way to get money is crime.
It is not the poverty the kid is smelling. I think it is more about the actual foul smell that is from Kims family living in the underground damp house. Those houses tend to grow moles since no sun exposure.
Can we talk about how it shows that poor people will throw each other under the bus for the chance of getting some scraps from the rich? The same way that rich people backstabing each other to reach the top. It is not just "the poor vs the rich" it is "me (and the people I care) vs the world". Being a parasite is not a matter of class, it is about seeing people as objects, like obstacles or disposable tools.
Interesting because I also interpreted visual representation for at least 7 out of the 9 deadly sins: Limbo: The state both the families begin in. Lust: Possibly linked with the whole panty thing and getting frisky. Gluttony: The wealthy family and their glutton for the party and material possession/wealth. Greed: Self evident. Wrath: The father after he commits murder. Violence: Obviously the party scene. Fraud: The poor family lying to infiltrate the wealthy one. The only two I can't think of an example off the top of my head for would be Heresy and Treachery, though I feel like heresy may be linked to the stone. Your comment got my head jogging a little, I felt like I had to type it out quickly, so forgive me for forgetting the family names :p

The deliberate placing and hidden messages that Bong Joon Ho did are spectacular. Considering the fact that he had all the setting made is mind blowing. I always thought the toilet was weird and that maybe that was a Korean thing but it was all on purpose! Amazing!
It's probably below the municipal sewer line. To connect with a lower toilet would require installation if a sewer lift -- a pretty costly expenditure.
26:27 It's heavily implied that the detective who didn't look like a detective and the doctor who didn't look like a doctor are "parasites" as well. The detective isn't really sure how to read someone "the Miranda thing," and the doctor can't explain why "Kevin" is laughing, just that it sometimes happens after brain surgery. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to do a quick Google search on it, which will tell you it's called Pseudobulbar Affect and that it's not uncommon for people that suffer a Traumatic Brain Injury, like say... having your head bashed in with a rock.
Oh shit you're right. I think that goes pretty deep too. There's more examples of people not being very proficient in whatever profession they have. Maybe implying capitalism is placing all the wrong people in the wrong places or maybe that there's just a ton of parasitical people out there. The rich dad comments on poor dads cornering, implying the previous driver wasn't as good at it, the detective falling down the steps, the rich mom not being able to..well anything. Just a few i can remember.
This movie has a lot of emphasis on people getting jobs not through skill, but rather connections. It's perfectly reasonable that the detective and doctors are "qualified" for the job... Just, I think the movie is trying to tell us that they didn't get the job because they're any good, rather they, like many others, got the job because of their connections.

One bit of social commentary: Kevin and Jessica ARE smart and talented. what they lacked was coming from a rich family. as shown Jessica is shown to be good with technology and art. and although she faked the art interpretation of Da-song, she was able to do quick research and implement it and was somewhat correct. shes quick to adapt and a quick learner. Kevin is mentioned to be very fluent in English and would be a great teacher (and acting coach) but he couldnt get ahead bc he did not have the money to pay for college. and he got the job just bc he was recommended by his rich friend. Certifications and qualifications didnt mean anything. status did. status that assumes one has those qualifications. It shows that despite the saying that is preached "work hard, be smart, and youll achieve success" its actually about who already had status. Jessica and Kevin could have been very successful had the playing field been leveled out.
Its also interesting that the rich daughter and son both require tutors, and are only able to get it because theyre rich. Im not sure exactly what it means, but it means something. Juxtaposition through the children I suppose

This was one of the best movies I've seen in a while. One of the most impactful scenes in the movie for me was when Mrs. Parks and Mr. Kim were driving back from the grocery store with food for the impromptu party. Mrs. Parks is on the phone with a friend and they're talking about the storm that happened the night before. She says something to the effect of, "You're right, the rain was a blessing...when you have lemons make lemonade." The look on Mr. Park's face was priceless. The storm for him was the opposite of a blessing, considering he lost almost everything he owned and left his family homeless for the foreseeable future. For her it was just an inconvenience that washed out the family's weekend plans, and to make it worse she also gets a wiff of poor from Mr. Kim and rolls down the window with a sour look on her face.
I dont get the significance of that scene in the car you mentioned. The rich mum doesnt have to be super rich to have the same thoughts about the flood, she can be middle class and still have the same thoughts...While the poor dad, well what happened to him because of the flood was indeed sad, of course he would feel what she said was distasteful but she doesnt know what he went through...The bottom line is, the poor dad was getting paid for a job, hes on the job, the rich mum is the customer, my point is, he shouldnt take it personally, hes on the job...So i dont see anything outstanding in that scene at all. I think the film is a little over rated. I can understand all the meaning behind the film about the rich and poor, but to me it doesnt make the film a better film because if it. I saw it as a film about a family of hustlers, I expected the plot twist to be the rich family to hustle them instead, when that didnt happen, it was a let down for me.
HDsharp that’s part of the impact. She’s clueless but the audience isn’t. Also the her version of making lemonade out of lemons, a phrase for making the best out of a really bad situation, is a getaway “camping” trip turned posh garden party. The extreme juxtaposition of the exact same event (rain and flood) on two extremes on the spectrum of social and financial class that’s very much a reality for real life people is what makes the moment so heavy. Take this quarantine, if you’re of a middle or upper class, then this is more likely to be a relaxation from the hustle and bustle of daily life. If you lower class or live paycheck to paycheck then you’re under extreme stress about how the hell youre gonna survive with no money. There’s literally no way to not take that scene personally unless he somehow cuts of his ears, it’s not like he blames her for causing weather, but hearing those kinds of privileged statements after you just lost everything will sting literally 100% people in that situation. Again, not out of blame to the woman, just a perfectly natural human reaction to hearing an event that just ruined your life being talked about so flippantly in her privileged, inconsequential bubble safe from the rest of the world that has to deal with that harsh reality.
@@leilanidru7506 yeah but thats expected though (everything you said), thats why i dont get what the hype is about. So he lost everything, his right to be sad, but hes still got his job, the whole family still has their jobs..Its not enough for him to go bonkers.
when the sister is in the bathtub, the family notices how much she fits in like shes lived there for years. this is why she died first, she was punished for trying to fit in with the rich, trying to be something shes not. the entire family, in fact, is punished physically and mentally for trying to be something their not. also the use of sunshine is equivalent to wealth. in the kims family home their window only allows a little bit of sunshine in, showing that they are poor and in the shadow of poverty. but in the parks family house their window lights up the entire house, showing that they are literally bathing in gold. also when the mother was talking on the phone she says that “money is going good,” showing that they are so rich that they dont even notice the loss of money they are giving to kims. when the kims house gets flooded, they are in the gym. the dad says “the best plan is no plan, because if you have a plan, life will never work out that way.” in the end of the movie kevin says in his note “dad, i have made a plan,” this tells us that he will never be able to save or see his father ever again in the note he also says “all you have to do is walk up the stairs,” this also tells us that he will never get rich enough to buy the house as he cannot walk up the stairs himself the talk of the dads note saying “everytime i go upstairs, i take my life in my hands,” is what the kims family did. they tried to live like the rich and they all held their lives in their hands. but the difference is that the sister lost her life when she was walking up the stairs the father also will never be able to walk upstairs in the light (the light being wealth and also his freedom) because everytime he walks up the stairs he has to do it when the light is off. the rock that kevin has also floated in the sewage scene which tells us that the rock is hollow, signifying false hope that the kims could ever be rich and out of poverty also the first scene and the last is the same, the window then going downwards onto kevin, the only difference is that kevin was holding his phone and in the last hes holding his morse code note, showing that the kims attempt of being like the rich had plunged them more deeper into poverty and lower than where they were before the stairs are a symbol of the line between the rich and the poor. the rich are always going upwards and the poor are always going downwards. notice how the kims family entrance goes downwards and the parks going upwards the way the parks mother is so stupid shows that the rich are so rich that they can afford to be dumb, but the kims are poor so they have to scramble and be smart to get by in life in the fumigation scene, the kims leave their window open to get free bug extermination. this indicated that the kims family would be the first parasite in the movie, as they were already leeching off of the efforts of someone else overall, this was a great movie and had so much symbolism and plot and i love it so much.
wait when were they "Literally bathing in gold"...? I think most of the other stuff you pointed out is pretty obvious but mostly right on. Really not a thematically original concept at all, the difference between rich and poor. It was just told in such a cool way.
Fantastic analysis! I think Jessica died not for “pretending” but for being the Kim actually closest to the light. The one with the most acumen and potential for social mobility. The point is her wit and merit were meaningless. The staircase wasn’t for the poor to rise. Only so prevalently in their sights so that the poor remain temped.
So many social themes: Min picked Kiwoo because he knows the girl won't find his poor status attractive so is safer pick than his wealthy college bros. The mom doesn't check Kiwoo's resume but hires him because of Min's recommendation, nepotism at its finest.
I feel like because of this social commentary lens people look at that "nepotism" in an overly harsh light. would you rather filter through hundreds of applications or try out the recommendation from someone you know and trust?
i find the whole cake symbol so interesting. the creepy basement dude lost all of his money trying to open a cake shop. he then scared the little boy as he was eating a cake, giving him a seizure. and finally, when he stabs jessica, he's plunged in the face with a cake. i dont know what it all means but THERE'S CLEARLY MEANING THERE
I think the cake overall resembles a good life, the dad put his whole safety into getting a good job and life for him and his wife, he scarred the little boy in his perfect world and while he got out and stabbed someone the cake got into his face resembling there's no way he'll ever get it
and in the begining the poor family mentions scamming a cake shop... around the thirty minute mark they mention a Taiwan cake shop and then later the housekeepers husband mentions a Taiwan cake shop... hmmm
Coming from a very poor family myself, this video elicited such a strong feeling of dread and frustration because I can relate to it so much. Sometimes it does feel like there's nothing I can do to help myself or my family live a better life.

You may try to argue that point, saying you know it wouldn't be instant, but if you disagree with the idea of sacrificing to better the lives of your descendants than you don't truly get it.
Exactly. Then they blame their failures on everything but their incompetence. Then they cry because they have no money but have the latest iPhone and 300 dollar shoes on. A lot of poor people are just terrible at managing money and that's because of little self control.
Metaphorically and symbolically the movie is so rich, however, i think the psychology behind the actions and the personality of the characters are displayed in extensive detail too. One of many examples that hit me was, when Dasong doesn't want the noodles, Mrs Park initially offers it to Mrs Kim, but then she remembers that the expensive beef is in the dish and quickly changes her mind and offers it to her husband. When he refuses she eats the whole thing herself. This thought process of Mrs Park and the subsequent actions depicted layers of her personality that while she may be gullible and seemingly 'nice', she's not the most generous and caring person either. In fact, she is rather stingy, she took out a few notes when she paid Kevin which would not have made much difference to her bank balance
You do realise the notes here are hard cash which she can't bring around too much right? Also, based on experience, giving too much to people beyond what they deserve/earn is not good for long term. There are occasions that call for bonus, sure.. but giving it randomly / without proper cause encourage laziness/taking the bonus for granted and dependence on "luck". And it does affect their mood/work when stop being given..
@@D4rkenedskies Wasn't it also like his very first day? I wouldn't probably pay the new kid as much as the one I already have experience with either. Give it a few weeks or months and let him prove himself then raise it back up. It also depends on how generous the payment is. If she's paying him peanuts way less than going rate that's shitty. If she was already over paying for the job and decided to cut back a bit for now I don't see the problem. Depends on the situation and specifics. Though ya I'm sure the movie was just trying to show greed or stinginess or whatever lol
@@D4rkenedskies I would argue that your ideas show that you are also not the most generous and caring person either. What an attitude. Do you appreciate when people underpay you so as to help you avoid getting lazy? Doesn't feel a little condescending to have someone who thinks they are better than you make that decision for you?
One detail I caught is the significance of Kevin dropping the rock down the stairs. This could symbolize "rock-bottom", because right as this happens, the entire of dynamic of the film changes for the worst.
Doesn’t the “buy me drugs” line have to do with her husband telling her he believes that a woman who forgets her panties in a car after having sex must be on drugs?
TOrens The person who made the video kept saying he didn’t know why she made the drug reference. I posted hoping to get insight from others to ensure if my thoughts were correct. Stop playing in my fucking face, loser.
@@chi7087 it has to do with them fetishizing poor people, for some reason that got them off. They also referred to the underwear in the old drivers car and for some reason the thing that turned them on enough to end up touching each other was them talking about the train
Ya, also considering he most definitely has brain damage after the rock attack, I doubt Kevin could actually become successful, obviously it's not impossible but it definitely will be harder for him
Right, he is never going to be able to save his father. We saw him sitting in that same old house at the end of the movie which in a way shows us that this is who he is and who is going to be for the rest of his life
Min called the wife "slow" so she probably has some sort of mental disability. My guess would be severe anxiety mixed with possible depression. This explains her sleeping instead of dealing with the fact that she needs to find a new tutor for her daughter. It also explains her freaking out when she can't observe Jessica's first lesson. This may all stem from living in a house that she believes is haunted by a ghost that "irreparably" hurt her son. That is why she clung so hard to Jessica's possible solution. The husband is constantly dealing with this and escapes into his work. He still loves his wife but is tired of dealing with her problems. He shows his love by embarrassing himself at the party to make her happy. This shows that even though they are rich they are not truly happy. Or at least that's my opinion
hmm it is a mental illness rather than disability. a lot of people have anxiety and depression, it doesn't explain how 'slow' and naive she is. however all the other things you pointed out makes sense.
@@marwah1072 I honestly think she's just been sheltered her whole life and always had someone do stuff for her. She can do things herself but she'd rather not. Kind of how the rich receives opportunities and connections passively, it naturally comes to them, so she just accepts it blindly. Compared to poorer people who seek connections and things to do in order to make money.
One thing I also notice is that, when dasong smelled the mom, dad, and sister. He said they all smell the same (smells of poor) but he doesn't include Kevin. So maybe, Kevin's plan of being successful and buying the house might be possible.
Literally, no one in parasite was likable. , minus the kids but literally no one. I think that's what made the movie so good. Everything was a moral gray area.

I can't help but realise that they could've save their asses if they just stop with the replacement plans once Kevin and Jessica got their jobs and save some money for the entire family but their greediness led them to just eat from restaurants from their earnings and just go with their plan of getting all the money from the Parks.
I was thinking like this as well but that’s how poverty works. When you’ve lived that lifestyle for so long the minute you get a taste of something better greed kicks in
@@healthykrissy212 Everyone wants to live a nice life so when you have the opportunity, why not indulge from time to time? Of course drinking the Parks’ alcohol and making a mess wasn’t smart but they were drunk so that could explain that part.
@@QuangTran27 They were poor, they just started getting good jobs and money. It's not that simple to just "buy a decent house". They would need better credit and enough money to pay off any bills+ save for the down payment. Being poor isn't easy and just getting a semi-stable job doesnt automatically give you the mobility to be apart of the middle class or even upper lower class.
The pizza box assembly example isn't about laziness or even indifference from being beaten down. I think it's an analogy of quantity over quality which is the state of capitalism today.
Not sure about capitalism but definitely related to consumerism. A lot of people buy an excess of things they don't need and that rate has grown incredibly since the industrial age. This high purchase rate made companies start producing products in excess in the hopes that people will buy even more if more is available. Everything from headphones to vehicles switched focus from quality to quantity and it's annoying for those who buy the product and realize it wasn't built to last. Take the I-phone for example. Why spend so much money on some fancy phone that will last a year at most? Meanwhile I still have my Nokia stored away in my drawer somewhere and it's practically in mint condition. lol
When Kevin went after the guy that was pissing by their window, he grabed the "money rock", now when he posses money, he is above the drunk dude. Where as before he didn't act. Also when he attacked the house keepers husband he brought and used the rock, he relys on it, his new strength and courage comes from money - the rock. And when the guy from the basement hit him in the head with it, that explains that "the money got to his head".
Yes it's very interesting and it's a metaphor about our society,in our world everything is based on money, from survival to power, and when you get too much money, and consequently power, you become insensible to other people's problems and ruthless.
I think the greatest thing this movie illustrates is that the family REALLY WAS talented to do all these jobs. Pretty much nothing was below them, but society just had no fucking use for them because they started so far behind the 8 ball.
HitchensImmortal not at all. At the end of the day they all had four successful jobs thanks to their hustle and “vigor.” Society wasn’t the problem, their greed was
@@sesamestreettv Except they had to cheat all legal avenues to achieve what they were entirely capable of. It's not the ability they lacked; it was the pieces of paper from the system with approval from other people who were part of the system they lacked. A system that was never going to give them the opportunity because they had no initial monetary investment in it, because they had no money. Which is the entire theme of the movie; exactly how much of the blame lies on anyone that a society produces people like them. People who are capable but left behind.
Apparently in Korea, high school is only 3 years, so she’s more like a hs junior. That puts her at around 17. The guy talked about taking the university entrance exam so he could plausibly only be 18/19ish. That’s not too weird
cloud I thought it might be like grooming because they were trying to get a teenager to like them and to be ok with them romantically until she's "the right age". I just think it's weird to look at a child in that way (as a potential partner) since people are more vulnerable and easier to manipulate at that age. This movie was a damn masterpiece but NOBODY was talking about that detail which stood out to me.
The letter in the end is a plan to get his father out of the basement, but just like his father said earlier, "if you make a plan, life never works out that way."
His son didn’t just faint, he had a seizure from seeing “the ghost” and as mentioned earlier in the movie, he had to get to the hospital in 10 minutes (or however long is said)
Nope. The son simply fainted. If he was having a seizure, the son would be shaking violently because that is the common media depiction of a seizure, and what everyone can recognize it. The mother calling it a seizure is just there to further point at how disconnected (or uncaring) from reality. They are so far gone that they blindly believe any piece of information or misinformation they get. Also, seeing something spooky can't cause seizures anyways. They can cause fainting, though.
@@sniderealism2410 tru but what about the time when the mrs Park something about foam coming out of her sons mouth? isnt that a side effect of a seizure?
THIS WATER IS DRY LMAO Iirc, the first time is him having a seizure. The second was said to be an urgent situation by the Park. I don’t think it’s just fainting. And he had a history. If you’re a parent, you have to worry for your children, right? However, I think the act of pinching the nose of Mr.Park and not calling ambulance were so wrong.
He fainted. They had delusions of grandeur about that kid when he was just a normal little boy. Their selfishness had them putting his fainting spell (that’s all it was doctors tell rich people lots of things and those parents were over dramatic about their child) over critically injured people.
kristalvick the mom mentioned him having a seizure after seeing a “ghost” before and to see that “ghost” murder my art therapist in front of me would put me in a seizure. There is no evidence pointing to some doctor lying about that
I usually watch this channel to get the summary on mediocre movies I’d rather not spend the time watching. But this is a movie that everyone should actually go see before watching a video like this.
The ramen that she asks to make is called "chappaguri" which is a popular combination of two budget noodle brands to which a very expensive cut of Korean beef is added. This addition is overly lavish and is another allegory for the social divide. Just thought this was really cool.
Mr Park says that the old housekeeper always ate for two people but that it was okay because of how hard she worked to maintain the house clean. She was feeding her husband who lived in the basement despite her saying she fed him with her own salary.
Really liked this, two things that came to mind that I feel were missed: 1, during the scene at the end where the Park's dad is yelling at the Kim's dad to toss him the keys, before that, he was being asked to drive the Parks. This meant he was being asked to make a choice, the choice of serving the rich in the hopes of keeping his job, and cash flow, or taking care of his own family. He hesitates. That's scary. That meant that the choice for serving the rich was almost good enough to even THINK about, unlike most people's first instinct which is to protect their own family at all costs. It just goes to show how much envy the Kim family had, so much that they were willing to do so many things just to get a slice of that life the Park's had. It was fueled by greed definitely. 2, the boy is said to have had a seizure during his last fainting spell when he saw the ghost, so I do not think it was necessarily that the Park's dad was unable to care for the poor, it was that he prioritized his own son first. That's not really in my opinion a bad thing, but it couples with the fact that the Kim's dad COULDN'T AFFORD to prioritize his own family. With wealth comes the ability to prioritize things, which is taken for granted.
Oh! The scene where Mr. Kim "hesitated" was actually him having already enough about how the rich were so oblivious to the poor (when Mr. Kim was driving Mrs. Park home, she said how the rain was a blessing for them but it flooded the Kim's home). Oh, oh! And the scene where Mr. Kim stabs Mr. Park is exactly the same way "Jessica" (I can't remember her Korean name) died. They were both stabbed. However, Jessica's death was a lot messier than Mr. Park's whose death was easy and clean as he died right away. Jessica was covered in blood and said "it hurts" many times meaning the extreme difference between the Kim and the Park. Ahhhhhhh... Such a masterpiece.
In the same scene, when Mr. Kim decides to drive himself and take the keys he alters because of the smell of “the basement man” (I can’t remember the name). He was so alarmed while yelling at the driver to take the keys and go because of his son state but when he does it he takes his time because he is disgusted by the smell. He even blocks his nose and pushes the man away carefully to barely touch him. That’s really caught my attention and infuriated me
@@kelialollos1666 It's interesting how don't normal/middle class people relate to it too? When we walk pass by a homeless man, may may not go as far as pinching our noses, but don't we also notice the smell? If the rich family would've presented rich family problems, majority of people would have had a hard time connecting to them. I believe the movie really does a good job at making us relate to the characters' actions.
Correct, plus the rich dad would not have known that the person bleeding on the ground was the driver's daughter. I honestly don't see a case of in your face communism being played out here, as the rich but clueless family were nice people taken advantage of by the parasites.
I just realized every time Da-song tries to have a birthday party it's tragic. - Camping Ruined - Impromptu Party Ruined -The fridge incident on his previous party ruined. Is that supposed to mean something? Can someone answer please.
Maybe like the saying: "money doesn't buy everything", even though he was born into luxury, the world is stronger than only material things, there's more to joy then objects, you can not control the force of nature.
perhaps that the rich will never escape the reality of the poor being around. at least, until they automate agriculture and then murder us all with drone swarms
What’s stupid is this kid was given an opportunity but didn’t realize it. He could have worked for the Parks family without his family for a few years and used them as reference for a better opportunity. Greed and quick cash is what ruined his family like most people.
One thing that really stuck with me was the scene at the beginning, when they were folding pizza boxes, and the father says to leave the window open in order to have a "free bug extermination". Essentially to me this represented the fact that they, too, are parasites, and are responsible for their own exterminations, as they dug their own holes once they let the old housekeeper in. OH and the fact that the father wanted the windows left open, it also lead to their house being flooded due to the rain
@@stush0178 for sure, which is what I found strange. Both the son and the mother should have been imprisoned for what they did, however I guess living in their own place is enough punishment as it is.

The smell thing is actually very true. From what I've witnessed as a Filipino, It has a lot to do with the diet, since pretty much all of us have the same hygiene routine, whether you're rich or poor. We take two showers a day, morning and evening. In Manila, the line between the rich and the poor is so thin, it can be seen from a single rooftop. You look the east, and you see big lots, large houses, large buildings; and then to the west, the slums. So people pretty much coexist. Me being on the lower class, having a very poor diet, I've been told that I do have a distinct smell by my friends (they're great friends btw lmao). And I personally, having both rich and poor friends, can smell a large difference, too.
Internet Dinosaur I don’t shower twice a day. Also I have friends that have distinct smells. The Kevin smell, the Daron cigarette smell, Jake smells like his grandma
There's something I'd like to say about cake shops, where Taiwanese cakes were once a sensation in Korea. That's why many Taiwanese cake shops have opened. And most Taiwanese cake shops closed their shops after losing customers, as "The Food X File," a famous Korean program, reported using bad oil, eggs and chemical additives from Taiwanese cakes. But the important fact is that although this method was not much of a problem in the way many bakeries use it, it was later known that it was exaggerated in broadcasting. Since then, there is no proper correction report. It was easy to understand for Korean because we have this background in Korea, but if you don't know this, you can understand that a cake shop in Korea always fail. lol
If you’re here bcs you’re not sure if it deserve the hype, please do watch it first. I watch it knowing 0 things about this movie, the hype was non-existent to me at the time and it was still the best movie ive ever watched
The song that played over the end credits title would be basically translated to "a glass of Soju". And it is about if he worked as hard as he could that 583 years it would take to be able to earn that house. The song is sung by the main male actor.
My friends and I were convinced Parasite wouldn’t win Best Picture even though we all wished it would. When they were announced, we lost our minds. You would’ve thought we were in the damn thing with how loud we were
I think one of the most important metaphor has been overlooked!!! " *Icing* *on* *cake* " When Mr Kim is trying to convince Mrs Park that the old maid has TB... *Jessica* is the one who suggests “If you get the chance the hot sauce(pizza sauce) will be icing on the cake" Mr kim uses and Mrs park is confirmed about the tb thing Then later Mrs park narrates the story about the ghost in which she tells that her son kept thinking about the cake because he loved (particularly) the icing on that cake - the reason he discovered the ghost In the end we see that Jessica is asked to carry the cake that has the same icing as before and when the ghost guy stabs she slams the cake on his bloody face leaving half his face stained with blood and half with icing " That is the reason the pizza scene is so important The proverb icing on the cake means an attractive but unimportant addition ... The icing probably represents the temptations that led to their downfall..
When you also realize the rich wife was more so allowed to be openly emotional at inappropriate times , but if the workers were visibly emotional like the poor father wearing the “tribal hat” birthday scene; then it would be seen more of a act of disrespect.
Have you noticed the painting of Da-song, the one hanging on the wall, it looks like geun-sae, the husband of the housekeeper moon -gwang and behind him is the indian tent of the boy on a sunny morning. and there's a yellow upward arrow on the top of the tent that indicates that geun-sae will go up and show up at the boy's party and will do a hideous crime which is the black abstract part of the painting at the lower right corner. or maybe the yellow arrow, for them, indicates that da song's dad will die and go to heaven because there's a black man shape object beside the arrow that seems ascending to heaven. Da-song's second painting, the one given to Jessica, shows geun-sae with a bloody forehead holding a knife which is actually what he looks like at the climax of the movie. 😎😎 What a brilliant movie!!!
Yeah, idk if this was intentional but Kevin/ki-woo asked if the painting depicted a chimpanzee, when it was actually the guy living under the house. When they first met him the old housekeeper gave him a banana, which could be a parallel since ya know monkeys eat bananas-
Another thing I haven’t seen much on is the way the Kim son very oddly began to manifest himself into his friend Min from the start? Literally repeating his phrases and ideas, romanticising the Park daughter even though he didn’t seem to have any real feelings for her
they were all acting, becoming, something else to survive. We see from the first five minutes how adaptive the Kim family is; leaving the window open, using the free wifi, and folding the boxes. They have learned to adapt in WHATEVER way is necessary. When it comes to a bug problem or infiltrating and scamming millionaires.
It’s actually so frustrating as a watcher that they messed this situation up so much, they shouldn’t have hired their parents. The dad was too insecure and the mum was too forceful. It’s like when someone has access to new money and they just spend frivolously instead of knowing that to do with it or have people around them to advise them. And they run out of money and have nothing to show but some clothes and stuff. Like you said they believed they deserved that house and lifestyle. Instead of just the two children working and helping towards debt repayment and making a new life. We don’t even have a timeline and see how much they earned or what they used their salaries for. SUCH A GOOD MOVIE. Edit: Because I am being misunderstood. Above are not criticism's of the film... they were criticisms of the behaviour of the characters. It was a realistic portrayal and I didn't know whether to love them or hate them as people. I was frustrated with them not the movie. And that's what made it a good movie. Because it made me feel emotions to fictional people, in a crazy story plot. A good movie, script, direction - inspires conversation. And that's exactly what we're all doing. Thinking, talking about social issues. I KNOW this is the point. Stop @me now.
That's the point. The best plan is there is no plan at all. If Ki-woo didn't suggest her sister, maybe the impending doom didn't orchestrated as the film progress.
@@qzo-faith the best plan is no plan is a way to say you're born rich die rich born poor die waiting for a miracle because you can't escape it otherwise.
It is frustrating, but given the context, it's extremely realistic.. A poor young man, sees and opportunity to boost his family into wealth? Granted the means are fraudulent, but we've been shown at the beginning that this is how they get by, they scam people, and have little to no work ethic.. So the Kim's are driven by two motivations: 1. The opportunity to live wealthy 2. Easy money Extremely realistic, both in the context of the Kim's POV and IRL
The reviewer completely missed the right analysis about the wife saying "Buy me drugs!" She was referring to the discussion they had earlier when the husband speculated that the panties in his car meant that it must belong to his drivers gf, who must have forgot it because her mind was cloudy from drugs. The couch scene was just a fantasy role play. The heart of that scene was the reveal of the husbands disdain of the fathers smell, and also put judgement on the daughter referring to her panties as "cheap", meaning the woman that owned them must also be low class.
The scene where she was going to pay him then took some money back out the envelope. What was that about? Even though they are rich they're still just as greedy?
yes that was the point of the scene. and she even lied about it and said she paid him more than she normally would giving him a false idea that he's being paid "well" when he could have been paid more
Also the "use or be used" aspect of attempting to climb the social ladder. Rich wife thinks she can get cheap lessons from ignorant employee, employee snakes his family onto the Rich employers payroll. Others might call this give and take and irl that's what I would reason it leans towards more. But Director Bong emphasized the elements of people using others to their own benefit more closely, which definitely applies when the gap between people are as large as the one between the two families in the movie.
Exactly that. His fake credentials were perfect. She believes that he’s a graduate from a prestigious school AND he’s Min’s friend. But she still undercuts him because she can and she’s exploiting the fact that he doesn’t even realize it. If it was Min, I’m sure he would’ve set his rates beforehand, she wouldn’t dare use that trick on him, or more like couldn’t. Greed knows no bound is the commentary here. Rich or poor, it is never enough. What makes it worse for me is on top of underpaying him she LIES about overpaying him to account for inflation. So now she’s covering her greed with a lie to make her look like a kind, giving saint. She’s trash too honestly, just like her husband, just like the Kims. You really can’t take either side in this movie, which makes it great!
Great analysis here! Also I’ve read that it could also be that she wasn’t born rich unlike her husband, so she remembers being poor herself, thus why she takes away some money because of the insecurity she grew up with. It also makes the scene with the ramen that much more powerful and why she’s the one that eats it and enjoys it.
My mother worked in a mental health institution. When u have people who dont drain their tub and bath in the same bathwater for 6 months to save water.......believe me the (poor) smell is veeeery noticeable. The toilet is raised because this film uses height and depth to symbolise social class. The Kims live below even the toilet, at the level of sewage.
So, that's not a normal thing in Korea? I'm just going off the fact that cultures are different in different countries.
@@Kinos141 Its a normal thing for people of low socioeconomic class everywhere.
My dumbass thought you were talking about North Korea’s Kims
@@Kinos141 Yes. But stairs are also normal in Korea! It is not that they exist IRL. It is that they have been purposely and frequently used to symbolic effect. There are quite a lot of scenes that take place in the bathroom by the toilet. It is a visual metaphor, much like the ascending and descending of stairs.
This is literally why they have to be raised, if they were built lower sewage would just flow out of them
Gotta give it to Da-hye, instead of screaming and fainting she's carrying a bleeding grown man on her shoulders.

He was in the kitchen when he got his head smashed. He almost escaped when the guy caught him.

Wow, that's a really good point. I didn't catch that they were fetishizing the poor in that scene. Maybe thinking that's 'dirty.'
Yea I peeped that during the couch sex scene. She wanted to be treated like a drugged out low life in that moment. Smh. Loved this movie

@@hereticsshallbecleansed7245 can you elaborate more? i'm curious!

Why isn't anyone talking about when Mr. Park is asked if he loves his wife he's like "yeah you can call it 'love'"?

Because it’s horribly tragic and sad. Did you really need to ask?

As Pooped By Anakin Skywalker Well Ki-Woo writes a plan to get enough money and buy the mansion to see his dad again. But his dad already mentioned that the best plan is no plan. Hence Ki-woo’s plan will never happen. The director also mentioned that the final song rolling through credits was to signify that it will take 545 years (somewhere around that amount) To make enough money to buy a mansion like that. That’s why it’s sad that we’ll never see the happy ending, happen.
But director said he is a bright child he will came up with something to rescue his father
Recommendation is what got them all employed. Like they say, ""it's not what you know, it's who you know."

The whole “smell of poor” thing is something I actually really like that’s mentioned. My favorite joke to tell is that when I walk into fancier stores, like Macy’s, I say that “they smell the poor on me”.
Macy’s ain’t fancy, everyone has to walk out of the mall through a Macy’s at some point. Just stay away from the makeup counters.
I thought his "poor smell," deal in this review was a super reach. The Kims were swimming in sewage water and the other guy was living underground for 4 years and probably never washed his clothes..but yeah lol it was because they had a poor smell.
Yo, don't go into a Nordstrom's.
@@VenomKpp They mentioned they washed their laundry in the movie. Dear Foundflix. The toilet is not "raised". Their house is "beneath" the toilet. That's Bong Joon Ho
The deliberate placing and hidden messages that Bong Joon Ho did are spectacular.
Considering the fact that he had all the setting made is mind blowing. I always thought the toilet was weird and that maybe that was a Korean thing but it was all on purpose! Amazing!
Very clever and subtle social commentary
also in the beginning they can only get wifi from that point in the house.
It's probably below the municipal sewer line. To connect with a lower toilet would require installation if a sewer lift -- a pretty costly expenditure.
I think it shows that the toilet has more importance that them. Given the fact that plumbing is useful.
Just, I think the movie is trying to tell us that they didn't get the job because they're any good, rather they, like many others, got the job because of their connections.
omg
Also when they showed the detective being clumsy.

In reality people always mix business and personal together
@@vivianong9574 Thats when you get fired.
@@leilanidru7506 yeah but thats expected though (everything you said), thats why i dont get what the hype is about. So he lost everything, his right to be sad, but hes still got his job, the whole family still has their jobs..Its not enough for him to go bonkers.
when the sister is in the bathtub, the family notices how much she fits in like shes lived there for years. this is why she died first, she was punished for trying to fit in with the rich, trying to be something shes not. the entire family, in fact, is punished physically and mentally for trying to be something their not.
also the use of sunshine is equivalent to wealth. in the kims family home their window only allows a little bit of sunshine in, showing that they are poor and in the shadow of poverty. but in the parks family house their window lights up the entire house, showing that they are literally bathing in gold. also when the mother was talking on the phone she says that “money is going good,” showing that they are so rich that they dont even notice the loss of money they are giving to kims.
when the kims house gets flooded, they are in the gym. the dad says “the best plan is no plan, because if you have a plan, life will never work out that way.”
in the end of the movie kevin says in his note “dad, i have made a plan,” this tells us that he will never be able to save or see his father ever again
in the note he also says “all you have to do is walk up the stairs,” this also tells us that he will never get rich enough to buy the house as he cannot walk up the stairs himself
the talk of the dads note saying “everytime i go upstairs, i take my life in my hands,” is what the kims family did. they tried to live like the rich and they all held their lives in their hands. but the difference is that the sister lost her life when she was walking up the stairs
the father also will never be able to walk upstairs in the light (the light being wealth and also his freedom) because everytime he walks up the stairs he has to do it when the light is off.
the rock that kevin has also floated in the sewage scene which tells us that the rock is hollow, signifying false hope that the kims could ever be rich and out of poverty
also the first scene and the last is the same, the window then going downwards onto kevin, the only difference is that kevin was holding his phone and in the last hes holding his morse code note, showing that the kims attempt of being like the rich had plunged them more deeper into poverty and lower than where they were before
the stairs are a symbol of the line between the rich and the poor. the rich are always going upwards and the poor are always going downwards. notice how the kims family entrance goes downwards and the parks going upwards
the way the parks mother is so stupid shows that the rich are so rich that they can afford to be dumb, but the kims are poor so they have to scramble and be smart to get by in life
in the fumigation scene, the kims leave their window open to get free bug extermination. this indicated that the kims family would be the first parasite in the movie, as they were already leeching off of the efforts of someone else
overall, this was a great movie and had so much symbolism and plot and i love it so much.
You took the words out of my mouth, nice analysis!
wait when were they "Literally bathing in gold"...? I think most of the other stuff you pointed out is pretty obvious but mostly right on. Really not a thematically original concept at all, the difference between rich and poor. It was just told in such a cool way.

i find the whole cake symbol so interesting. the creepy basement dude lost all of his money trying to open a cake shop. he then scared the little boy as he was eating a cake, giving him a seizure. and finally, when he stabs jessica, he's plunged in the face with a cake. i dont know what it all means but THERE'S CLEARLY MEANING THERE
I think the cake overall resembles a good life, the dad put his whole safety into getting a good job and life for him and his wife, he scarred the little boy in his perfect world and while he got out and stabbed someone the cake got into his face resembling there's no way he'll ever get it

냥냥 she also used some words in English when she talked to different members of the poor family. Kind of like look at me I’m smart, i know english.

You do realise the notes here are hard cash which she can't bring around too much right? Also, based on experience, giving too much to people beyond what they deserve/earn is not good for long term. @@D4rkenedskies Wasn't it also like his very first day? I wouldn't probably pay the new kid as much as the one I already have experience with either.
😂
hmm it is a mental illness rather than disability. a lot of people have anxiety and depression, it doesn't explain how 'slow' and naive she is. however all the other things you pointed out makes sense.
@@marwah1072 I honestly think she's just been sheltered her whole life and always had someone do stuff for her. She can do things herself but she'd rather not. The pizza box assembly example isn't about laziness or even indifference from being beaten down. I think it's an analogy of quantity over quality which is the state of capitalism today.
oh that’s a good point
Not sure about capitalism but definitely related to consumerism. A lot of people buy an excess of things they don't need and that rate has grown incredibly since the industrial age. This high purchase rate made companies start producing products in excess in the hopes that people will buy even more if more is available. Everything from headphones to vehicles switched focus from quality to quantity and it's annoying for those who buy the product and realize it wasn't built to last. Take the I-phone for example. Why spend so much money on some fancy phone that will last a year at most? Meanwhile I still have my Nokia stored away in my drawer somewhere and it's practically in mint condition. lol
I think it has more to do with the fact that one of the family members were off/different (1/4 of the boxes were poorly made)
1/4 of pizza boxes unusable means its the fault of one member, coz theyre 4 and 1 isnt doing their job well.
Capitalism=quality,
socialism=quantity

cloud I thought it might be like grooming because they were trying to get a teenager to like them and to be ok with them romantically until she's "the right age".
He smells cheap detergent, sub-basement mold and fumigation smoke on them.
The dad wanting to be doused in toxic chemicals like that when he just sat there and let a pesticide cloud cover him was insane

It was garbage
The ramen that she asks to make is called "chappaguri" which is a popular combination of two budget noodle brands to which a very expensive cut of Korean beef is added. This addition is overly lavish and is another allegory for the social divide. Just thought this was really cool.
i thought this movie was about a zombie virus
no, thats: Train to Busan
Anime
Yeah the anime which I've watched 4 times now. So good..
The Parasyte anime is more of a body-snatcher show than it is a zombie show
i thought it was live adaptation of parasite anime
Mr Park says that the old housekeeper always ate for two people but that it was okay because of how hard she worked to maintain the house clean. She was feeding her husband who lived in the basement despite her saying she fed him with her own salary.
True but she was a good housekeeper and did her job well
Really liked this, two things that came to mind that I feel were missed: 1, during the scene at the end where the Park's dad is yelling at the Kim's dad to toss him the keys, before that, he was being asked to drive the Parks.
@@stush0178 glad someone brought that up
I just realized every time Da-song tries to have a birthday party it's tragic.
- Camping Ruined
- Impromptu Party Ruined
-The fridge incident on his previous party ruined.
Is that supposed to mean something? Can someone answer please.
"impromptu" the girl he's been befriending for like a month bets stabbed in front of him lol
Maybe like the saying: "money doesn't buy everything", even though he was born into luxury, the world is stronger than only material things, there's more to joy then objects, you can not control the force of nature.
perhaps that the rich will never escape the reality of the poor being around. at least, until they automate agriculture and then murder us all with drone swarms
it shows the kid will keep reliving his trauma from being in that family to begin with
If you try to plan something, life never works out that way.
The peach scene was genius
What’s stupid is this kid was given an opportunity but didn’t realize it. He could have worked for the Parks family without his family for a few years and used them as reference for a better opportunity. Greed and quick cash is what ruined his family like most people.
didnt you see the situation they were living in? you only think like that because of how the movie turned out.
what ruined them was them letting the lady in😂
@@banmas6915 truest comment lmao
@@banmas6915 That's what I thought. Even when she first showed up i was like "Just tell her to come back when the Parks are home"
Serafin Schaller I seriously thought that was gonna happen at first also they made a really bad choice following a lady down a creepy hidden basement-
One thing that really stuck with me was the scene at the beginning, when they were folding pizza boxes, and the father says to leave the window open in order to have a "free bug extermination".
Essentially to me this represented the fact that they, too, are parasites, and are responsible for their own exterminations, as they dug their own holes once they let the old housekeeper in.
OH and the fact that the father wanted the windows left open, it also lead to their house being flooded due to the rain
Kimberley Cheung All 4 of the should have died or jailed, not able to end back up at that house
@@stush0178 for sure, which is what I found strange. Both the son and the mother should have been imprisoned for what they did, however I guess living in their own place is enough punishment as it is.
It’s so messed up that the cake that was supposed to fix the kid’s trauma was literally one of the most prominent parts of the most traumatic event he had yet to experience.
Facts cause both times he had cake something traumatic happened to him, scaring him enough to go into a full seizure. Lmao he's never gonna touch or even look at a piece of cake for the rest of his life at this point

Totally agree !
@Ocean Blue I might laugh too. I would imagine my sister laughing with me. But we are weird like that. Often laugh at the most painful tragedies.
You would’ve thought we were in the damn thing with how loud we were
Right?! I was so surprised but so happy.
I think one of the most important metaphor has been overlooked!!!
" *Icing* *on* *cake* "
When Mr Kim is trying to convince Mrs Park that the old maid has TB... *Jessica* is the one who suggests “If you get the chance the hot sauce(pizza sauce) will be icing on the cake" Mr kim uses and Mrs park is confirmed about the tb thing
Then later Mrs park narrates the story about the ghost in which she tells that her son kept thinking about the cake because he loved (particularly) the icing on that cake - the reason he discovered the ghost
In the end we see that Jessica is asked to carry the cake that has the same icing as before and when the ghost guy stabs she slams the cake on his bloody face leaving half his face stained with blood and half with icing "
That is the reason the pizza scene is so important
The proverb icing on the cake means an attractive but unimportant addition ...
The icing probably represents the temptations that led to their downfall..
Yo, why has no one replied with how much of a genius you are. I wouldn't have even made the connection, your attention to details is impeccable.
@@Fae_van thanks😂

What a brilliant movie!!!
Wow I didn’t even realize that
Yeah, idk if this was intentional but Kevin/ki-woo asked if the painting depicted a chimpanzee, when it was actually the guy living under the house.
That’s irrelevant.
.
It is frustrating, but given the context, it's extremely realistic.. A poor young man, sees and opportunity to boost his family into wealth? Granted the means are fraudulent, but we've been shown at the beginning that this is how they get by, they scam people, and have little to no work ethic.. So the Kim's are driven by two motivations:
1. The opportunity to live wealthy
2. Easy money
Extremely realistic, both in the context of the Kim's POV and IRL
The twist where his sister died really caught me. I thought she wouldn't

This is literally one movie tho....
Stush01 Kpop is god awful.
The rich are rich BECAUSE they're greedy
yes that was the point of the scene. and she even lied about it and said she paid him more than she normally would giving him a false idea that he's being paid "well" when he could have been paid more
Also the "use or be used" aspect of attempting to climb the social ladder.
17:37 that kick was real smooth to be honest xD
That's messed up when someone can *smell* that you're broke
My mother worked in a mental health institution. When u have people who dont drain their tub and bath in the same bathwater for 6 months to save water.......believe me the (poor) smell is veeeery noticeable.
