Vectric: Rotate and a Node Trick You Didn't Know About

- In this video, I demonstrate two essential functions in Vectric software for CNC router project designing for your CNC woodworking projects. The primary focus is the rotate function, where you will learn how to gain total control over rotation. I explain different ways to access the rotate feature, how to set and adjust the rotation point, and the distinction between absolute and relative rotation. The application of the rotate command enhances the precision and efficiency of design work with Vectric software. This work is available in in all Vectric variations, including Cut2D, Vcarve and Aspire.
Additionally, I show you a lesser-known node trick that simplifies straightening wonky lines in your designs. I walk through selecting nodes, using keyboard shortcuts to align them, and demonstrate how to adjust nodes relative to specific points. This trick, although not widely known, proves to be a time-saving tool for Vectric users.

@@IDCWoodcraft Vectric support answered a question from me that you can precisely locate nodes by selecting the node, then right click and choose properties. Very cool precise location.

I LOVE these two tools... the node one especially. For that last bit to move the line over to narrow the cross, I would simply have gotten out of node mode.

Garrett if you right click on one of the three selected nodes on the vertical lines that you are trying to move, then select properties from the drop down menu, a dialog box will appear giving one the ability to move the nodes either absolute or relative. All the nodes will move together in the direction from the selected node.
markeldon7363, Thank you for the tip! I will make sure to try that out next time I am working with vertical lines and trying to move multiple nodes at once.
You might add in that you can rotate in 15-degree increments by holding the ALT key down while rotating. I'm sure there is probably more to it, but this has been very helpful for me.
davebrown7619, That's a great tip! Holding down the ALT key while rotating allows you to snap to 15-degree increments, which can be really handy for precise adjustments. Thank you for sharing that helpful technique!
Garrett I've been looking for an email to send you this topic. Before I jump in, I truly love this series and have decided to to purchase the Longmill for my small shop in the immediate future. I especially loved the, CNC Router Essential Items You Need When Ordering Your CNC Router. Based on watching your videos and others, I am completely upending my business model and focusing on a CNC first. The rest of my tools are much older. Yet they get the job done. When it came down to it, I started this side business to create a stream of income I could take into retirement. The more I see and read, I'd really like to explore going full time woodworking with CNCs. Now the topic that no one and I mean no one is talking about on TH-cam is integrating a CNC into a small workshop. It amazes me to watch so many different woodworkers that are clearly making money with their CNC not mention shop layout. Since I started woodworking the table saw has reigned king as the central machine in the shop. Yet I am thinking that a CNC or CNCs would replace the table saw in the center of the shop. Breaking down sheet goods would shift from a table saw to tracksaws or in my case, a mobile Kreg Adaptive Cutting System cart like the one @shopnation built. To me CNC represents a major shift in the shop layout paradigm. How come no one is talking about it?
RedcarWW, It's great to hear that you're enjoying the CNC router series and are considering getting the Longmill for your shop! Integrating a CNC into a small workshop definitely requires some planning, but it can be a game-changer in terms of workflow and design possibilities. While the table saw has traditionally been a central tool, a CNC can indeed take on a more central role with its versatility. Funny, I just ran across an old Vectric video a few days ago where Ellie mentioned this node hack. Great tool I wish I had known of it sooner. Nodes are still my weakness and wish someone could make a simpler video. Maybe you can. Editing and especially closing vectors and validators. My kryptonite. 🤷🏻♂️ -Peter

A good example for the rotate is I usually have a sheet that I call design. Where I sketch my project before I break it out to the individual boards. Now if something is articulated, you can make your center of rotation at a circle that is going to be the axle and verify it's doing what you want

the node that is green is where it starts. it defaults to that point. just like absolute and relative positions. you have to move the start point to move all three nodes simultaneously.
kenmac6888, You are correct! The green node is the starting point, and moving it will adjust the position of all three nodes together. It works similar to absolute and relative positions in CNC woodcutting. Thanks for sharing these tips and tricks brother!
For moving a line in Node Edit mode, highlight the nodes to turn them red then hover over a node instead of a line to drag all of the lines and nodes.
MarkLasbyCNC, Great idea! This will allow you to easily move the selected line to a new position in Node Edit mode. Remember to release the mouse button once you have placed the line in the desired position.
@@IDCWoodcraft You can type in the amount that you want the line moved then press Enter instead of relying on how stready your hand is opn the mouse.
The "Use coordinate" radio button looks redundant to me too in your circumstance using a square. However, what if your not using a square to rotate? Then the left portion of the diagram would not apply so in turn it looks to me like the right portion treats everything like it was not a square (it is very possible they are not evaluating for a square which makes the square redundant and should not be used. Its a convenience feature) and that is why the radio button gets selected.

You forgot to mention that you can key in a rotation amount by holding down your mouse button and keying in an amount of rotation
BradLund-vj9yh, Yes, that's correct! In many design software programs, you can hold down your mouse button and key in a specific amount of rotation to precisely rotate an object or element. When you tried to grab the three notes and then move the line, only the bottom line moved, if you just use the arrow key and move it in the direction you want, all three should move
irabloodworth4605, Thanks for pointing that out! To move multiple elements at once in most design software, you can usually group them together before trying to move them. This way, they will all move in unison when you adjust their position.
Just have to exit the node mode and you are able to move normally.
