Once again Mucker your due diligence was the difference between success and failure. I didn’t think it would start because there wasn’t a bird’s nest! Seriously, the engine sounded sweet proving it is sound.

Haha Nick ! I don't think there's much I can tell you about Wagners ! It was a real treat for me to get to drive this one. They are apparently the only two here in England.

A Detroit on full song is music to my ears. My dad got his truck licence with a truck powered by a 8V-71. Even though they're a rare beast now I still love the sound.

Just one of those iconic sounds. When I was a kid and that’s a couple years ago now. Most of the cement trucks, all the city buses had 2 stroke detroits. There is a cement plant a couple miles from my farm and in the morning when the wind was the right way you could hear the first loads going out for the day.
I’ve got to find an old dump truck or road tractor with a screaming jimmy just for the soundtrack.

I'm 70 years old and grew up in the Portland Oregon area. Wagner is still in business. During the second world war, the company that is now Wagner was building machinery for the war effort. When the war ended the company needed to find a product to keep the factory operating. They came up with an ingenious tricycle front end loader called a "Scoopmobile". These were designed to be towed by a small dump truck and used by local road departments to clean ditches. When I was a child, Scoopmobiles could be seen everywhere. A few can still be seen in Oregon today. Later, Wagner merged with another company to become Raygo Wagner. Actually, the first ever articulated front end loader was also a Wagner. During the '60s or '70s there were two operations, Raygo Wagner (above ground equipment) and Wagner Mining (underground mining equipment).
I was driving a chip truck last year, hauling wood chips from lumber mills to a paper mill in SW Washington State. The paper mill uses 3 Wagners to pile the chips. They rolled one off of the pile last year and replaced it with a new one. They appear to be big clunky machines, but many mills seem to like them for pushing chips.

Dad drove a Commer lorry with a Rootes TS3 two stroke (underslung) engine back in the 1950s. They were fitted with a Roots type blower (different company) and required a different style of driving to the normal four stroke. Always high revving even during gear changes they would de-coke after so many miles sending a shower of sparks from the exhaust.

Great video. I never realized before watching your videos that Detroit motors were used in UK. I thought they were mainly here in North America. And I’m really surprised to Wagner tractors over there as well. Same thing I honestly thought they were only really marketed in Canada and the US. My dad is 83 and has been in farming and running construction equipment since he was like 16 so he’s spent a lot of time around Detroits. He still loves talking about running a big Koerring excavator in the 70s with twin 6V71s😊

Sweet running old girl! My uncle drove Detroit powered trucks for many years, he used to say you could pin a picture of a Detroit to the wall and find a stain in the plaster the next day. Really it's a bum wrap though, most just suffer from the old rubberized paper gasket materials of the day. I've seen plenty rebuilt with modern gaskets and they don't leak a drop.

They developed that here because everyone was putting Jimmys in there own trucks to get rid of the petrol motors. Dodge put out the D5N 700 with a 6V53, only about 400 made. Bedford thought they had better try to keep up. Not many of them about either. The US trucks took over then. A lot of deaf old truck drivers about from those ‘good old days’. I remember seeing a bloke driving a D5N 700 with ear muffs on when ear muffs were uncommon for anything. Jeff

Thank you for the videos and look forward to dealing more of your videos so I can learn more about the Detroit Diesel from the center of the United States take care and God bless

Did something similar with my Oliver 1950. Just after we bought it I took it to drive it a little to see what they are like. After parking it I knew about the emergency kill well mostly and after I shut it down I checked to see if it worked. Pulled the switch herd a clunk and thought it works pushed the knob back thinking that is all that is needed to do to stop the emergency shutdown no it isn't. Few minutes later my brother wanted it started again it started but wouldn't rev and smoking like all hell shut it down didn't know what happened but my brother figured it out quickly and properly shut off the emergency shutdown. I got lucky it never gave us trouble from that mistake the only issue it gave us was losing power sometimes so did what most people do with a diesel low on power replaced the fuel filters hasn't been a problem since. One thing I got to do is learn how to adjust the governor I don't get enough RPM for full PTO speed.

The 4-53 had serious dependability issues, now the cousin, 6-71, of which I had two, & you did a video about same, those 6-71's were practically bullet proof. This Wagner concept can't be mentioned while ignoring the Big Budd influence on 4 WD articulated power units, BTW, Big Budd is set to return to life this spring 2023

    • @LordMuck

Myself not so bright I'm afraid, because I dropped back to have a look see at the above-mentioned earlier video, and thought I'd back tracked far enough to leave you're Lordship a note about a channel you may find to your liking.
Ole 2 Stroker is the channel, nice fellow outta upper New York state
Full-time diesel mechanic I believe he is, but dam fantastical about those GM green beast he is, and a growing collection of them he's got.
Even an old race truck from the 80's that supposedly turned up to 800 ponies that he's going to try to bring back to the way it originally was looking.
He's already got her running, and shifting once again after sitting abandoned for way to long.
Just give his channel a look see if you would, as I believe you'll find things to your liking.

A suggestion from a 4-53 owner. I would pull the emergency stop housing off and check that flap. I have seen them get bent and not seal off the air completely. It should shut it down when deployed. I make it a habit when changing oil to deploy the emergency stop to make sure it has not frozen up. You will get dissimilar metal corrosion between the shaft on the flap and the housing. It may not fully deploy when you need it most. Just a suggestion.

    • @LordMuck

When we service it that's exactly what I'll do, we just didn't have any spare time this trip. I did just that with my 6-71 and 4-71. For that to have started a ram with it deployed means something isn't seating right.
What have you got a 4-53 fitted in out of interest ?

That was a lot of fun, I nearly wet myself with some of the insert clips, but anyway I did a quick calculation on the capacity of the 4/53 which is 212 cu inches or 3.47 litres but an amazingly powerful engine for it's size. The 2/ Detroits have the emergency shut down in case of overrun and I was working on a boat with an 8/71 which the had an overrun for me. Problem was the ESD had been disconnected in the wheelhouse so I had go into the engine room with this screaming fucking monster and operate the ESD at the blower. Was I scared? No, I was shitting myself, I was shaking so much I inhaled a cigarette in one go.

@@LordMuck by the time I went from the wheelhouse to the engine room I think she was at about 3000 rpm, screaming her guts out. New injectors and a new ESD cable, good as gold. That engine you just had to wave your finger over the starter button and she would burst into life, fun boat to drive.

Where I worked in the 70's we had a Euclid loader the howl of which could be heard all over the site, and quite a distance off site, when it was working on the coal stack.
