The Sibling Rivalry Behind Adidas Versus Puma

  • In the 1930s, brothers Adolf and Rudolph Dassler made the most kickass kicks throughout the land. Business began to take off once Jesse Owens won four gold medals at the 1936 Olympics while wearing Dassler sneakers. But with great success brought great competition. Soon, sibling rivalry split the brothers and their company apart, with each creating their own line of shoes. Today, Adidas and Puma continue to be leaders within the shoe industry, while brothers Adolf and Rudolph lie buried at opposite ends of a soccer field as their feud continues on into eternity.

    I think why the Adidas-Puma match happened in 2009 was because from 2004-2018, Adidas's General Counsel was Frank Dassler who not only was the last Dassler in Adidas, but was also the grandson of Rudi Dassler.
    He was the only Dassler to have worked for both Adidas & Puma.

    For me, when it comes to driving shoes, I pick Puma because of the shoe tread that's suitable for driving. For casuals, I pick Adidas....I just wanted to have a simple shoe that doesn't look too bulky or weird. Both shoe brand are good at making shoes for certain category although we shouldn't forget that NIKE is on top of both of them. I own and wore both Puma and Adidas's shoes along with NIKE's shoes.

    You pronounced Adidas wrong. It is pronounced AH-dee-dahs. “The brand is German, most Europeans pronounce it correctly. It comes from the name of the company’s founder, Adolph Dassler, whose nickname was Adi.” The combo of his nickname and last name is where “Adidas” comes from. (Business Insider)

    • @TheFeldhamster
      @TheFeldhamster 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      While it's not stressed that much on the "di" like most English speakers and this narrator do, it's not pronounced with "AH" at the beginning and drawn out vowels either.
      It's more like "addy-dass" with all short vowels and more with a double D sound kind of like in "muddy". So, it starts off like "addition" and ends in "dass" with a short A and a snappy S sound (kind of like "class"). Because that end comes from the last name "Dassler" and in German, vowels before a double consonant are short. I am a native German speaker.

    I can say I first liked adidas more than puma. I even have the adidas original tattoo on my forearm but later I grew a intense liking towards the puma brand their recent style really grabbed my attention especially the motorsport gear and shoes and last part and perhaps what really sealed the deal for me is pumas incredible competitive pricing I sometimes can't believe how cheap some things actually are on their website.

    Wonder if this was inspired by the Adidas story in WIRED. Just read that a month or so ago and it was the first time i'd head these companies were founded by brothers.
