  • Join us today as we hit an iconic must-stop in Singapore and then head out to the biggest satay hawker centre we have ever experienced. We start the evening heading to the Raffles Hotel for its famous cocktail. The Singapore Sling was created around 1915 by bartender Ngiam Tong Boon at the Raffles Hotel in Singapore. Originally a disguised drink for women, it gained popularity as a tropical gin-based cocktail. Today, it remains an iconic symbol of Singapore's cocktail culture and the history of the Raffles Hotel. Afterward, we head to another must-stop hawker center: Satay Street at Lau Pa Sat. Satay Street at Lau Pa Sat offers a vibrant culinary experience. Amidst the bustling hawker center, savory skewers of grilled meat are prepared and infused with aromatic spices. The fragrant smoke, lively atmosphere, and delectable flavors make it a must-visit destination for food enthusiasts in the heart of the city. On top of a night full of tasty drinks and grilled meats (Kelly finds delicious vegetarian Indian dishes), we have our good friend from Alaska joining us!

It was raining when I visited Lau Pa Sat this past February. No outdoor seating due to rain. Luckily, though there were crowds, it wasn’t too bad. The satay vendors would come up to you, hand you a menu and a buzzer. That system worked as long as they saw you. I tried to find my guy. Eventually, he saw me. Delicious food. Even had White Rabbit ice cream.

The satay at Lau Pa Sat is Malay style. There is also Chinese style satay which is not as sweet as the Malay style. The more traditional style Chinese satay comes with a dollop of pineapple puree in the peanut sauce which is meant to be mixed in. The are many such stalls in Chinatown at level 2 of Chinatown Complex Food Centre which is very local, and many tourists seem to bypass and head to Maxwell for the chicken rice.
FYI, Maxwell is across the street and facing the front of Buddha Tooth Relic Temple while Chinatown Complex is right at the back of the temple right where many senior guys play Chinese chess.

3:55 Reason that "it was not socially acceptable for women to consume alcohol" is because Singapore's immigrants came from traditional places. Muslims aren't allowed to consume alcohol regardless of male or female and in China drinking was considered a vice.

    • @foodmore

Says the satay expert. And yet it is packed all the time. If it was that bad, why is it always so crowded? And it isn’t only tourists that eat there, locals do too.
Just because it is considered a more touristy place to eat doesn’t automatically mean it does not have quality food.

Dry tissue is 3 for $1. Some touristy place/after inflation is 2 for $1.
And the cheap wet tissue is only 50cents to a dollar in value$ shop.

17 dollars for a shirley temple was the bigger rip-off imho.. betcha that same bar buys sprite in bulk from value$ also...

Satay at Lau Pa Sat is a better choice. Don't go Chinatown. Find the Malay vendors there, they taste nicer. As Satay originated from Indonesia, also widely prepared by malays in Singapore and Malaysia. Not the Chinese. The ones sold by them not authentic. Copycat.
