Are you an international student on OPT facing the challenge of unemployment with a ticking clock? In this video, we've got you covered! We'll break down everything you need to know about unemployment on OPT, ensuring you navigate this aspect with confidence.
Disclaimer: This video serves as an educational guide to OPT rules, not personalized legal advice. For personalized counsel, consult an experienced immigration attorney.
As an F-1 student with an EAD card, you can't accumulate more than 90 days of unemployment during post-completion OPT. STEM-OPT extensions have a 60-day limit. Exceeding these limits can risk your F1 and future immigration status.
To understand OPT unemployment, let's define employment on OPT. It includes paid/unpaid work related to your field for at least 20 hours a week. The options range from traditional employment to self-employment.
Many students focus solely on W2 jobs, causing unemployment days to stack up. Consider alternative positions to halt your unemployment clock while actively job hunting for your desired role.
Three options to stop your clock:
Work for Hire: Consider 1099 employment as an independent contractor.
Unpaid Employment: Explore volunteer or unpaid intern opportunities (with strict guidelines).
Self-Employment: Run a business during your 12-month OPT period related to your field of study.
For a deeper dive into these strategies and more, check out our course, "The International Student’s Career Search Masterclass" at sojourning scholar.com/career-guide, linked below.
If you're nearing your unemployment limit and want to protect your F1 status:
Enroll in a University Program: Transition to a new degree or level.
Change Your Nonimmigrant Status: File Form I-539 to switch to another non-immigrant visa class.
Plan Your Departure: Cancel OPT and prepare to leave the US during the 60-day Grace Period.
Don't let OPT unemployment stress you out. Watch this video, learn the options, and take control of your international student journey!

Hii , I applied for opt got approved with wrong majors which is not stem. My DSO send me the i20 with correct majors code after it was approved. Will be a problem for me when I apply for stem extension with the new i20 of corrected major? As my initial approved opt major code is different.

STEM I-20 requires a new I-20, so should not be an issue.

STEM OPT restricts you to jobs that are E-verified and provide compensation.
