CLEVELAND CAVALIERS VS. ORLANDO MAGIC INSTANT REACTION: Emoni Bates & Jaylon Tyson impressions

  • The Cleveland Cavaliers won't run the table in the Las Vegas summer league again.
The Orlando Magic jumped out to a 20-point halftime lead in the Cavs SL debut as Jordan Ott's squad had no answer for the Orlando offense.
Emoni Bates & Jaylon Tyson both were aggressive in their debuts. Tyson looked like what the Cavs had hoped from their first round pick. Bates had 9 first half points.
Tristan da Silva, the 18th overall pick by the Magic, had 13 first half points.

Interesting breakdown from McNuggets. I liked Jaylon Tyson’s game today far more than Emoni’s. Tyson was cleaning glass, attacking and finishing well at the rim, also brought the ball up and got us in our sets more than I expected. Emoni did nothing but iso and take contested shots. McNuggets did say at the end he took more good things away from Tyson than anyone else but the actual breakdown didn’t really reflect that.

I actually went back and watched the highlight cut ups after. Tyson did more little things well than I caught live. Definitely the brightest spot of the night for CLE - McNuggets

No player can be faulted for today. Today was CLEARLY due to a lack of trust in a system. Nobody can look good when theres no established system. This was worse than JBs offense.

Orlando played pissed off took some 40 footers that didnt even touch the rim Went straight in the net. So it was kinda like........Cavs coaching staff just came together a week ago. You could tell.

Was hoping better from Emoni. Still forces up some shoots. Did execute a few pick and roll plays. Was disappointed on his work when his team mates took a shot. He just stands flat footed in place with his arms spread a little. Did not put his body on his man, or step towards the rim.

Sometimes analysis of a game’s result has to shift from the Cavs to the opponent to explain
what, why and how. 4 of 5 Orlando starters simply had more talent. It was expected Black & Jett Howard would shine, #6 & #11 lottery picks who both got experience last year. Rookie da Silva lived up to his resume. The 7’ footer Huff was a big positive surprise . Cavs simply got out gunned.

Tyson is a role player wing, with some nice playmaking ability and scoring chops. He isn't the missing sf. He isn't the stretch 4. So what is he there for? There were a plethora of better fits at the 3-4 position on the board. He must be a Levert replacement come trade deadline. Koby is not that good at drafting for fit on paper or even potential.
Look at his record of picks. Sexton instead of SGA or MPJ or Mikal Bridges or Miles Bridges. The next draft he failed to Secure Hunter and settled for DG, but should have traded back and rode with Sexton for one more season. Could have taken PJ or Cam and been completely justified. Then later he takes another injury prone player in Windler followed by a headcase. He should have picked Claxton, Gafford or Bol. Next draft he leaves Vassell, Haliburton, Nesmith and Jaden McDaniels on the board for a project Iggy. Next draft he gets lucked into Mobley, but Barnes is slightly better offensively already. The next draft he takes a national champion, then trades him but should have taken his teammate in Braun and kept him. Then he drafts a center that will never suit up right before McGowens aka Vassell clone. Then the next draft the deepest in recent memory that all knowing Koby has no firsts. Yeah he is a genius.

Nepotism only goes so far. It’s not like he’s Bronny and Lebron can keep him on the team even if he sucks. Evan Mobley doesn’t have pull like that. If he did the Cavs also would’ve granted his rookie max extension a long time ago. Something is brewing behind the scenes with the MOBLEYS that may shock the Cavs fanbase 😮😮😮😮

Summer league is a joke. It's basically pick up basketball out there, so I wouldn't worry about team performance or even individual performances. The G League is much more structured basketball, and this is where both Bates and Tyson will play most of the season this year. Neither of them are getting meaningful NBA minutes with the Cavs this year. The roster is too deep with roll players right now, but hopefully both can fine tune things and be ready next year.
