As Prithviraj mentioned his & Prabhas conversation about how the next blockbuster film would come from Odia or/and Northeast states he was indeed right. The real growth as 'Indian Cine Industry' will happen only when all states produce quality films as a Maharashtrian I too hope Marathi Industry gets its due just as other state cine industries have got theirs.✌🏼

Directors from Odisha are making their marks on global podium since years. Nila Madhab Panda with his "I am Kalam", "Kadvi Hawa" and Soumendra Padhi with Jamtara are a few examples. These and other directors have spectacularly shown the world some very relatable stories of Odisha and Eastern India belt. Having said that, as an industry, yes we have a long distance to go to be there.

The main issue of the Odia industry is the lack of effort. Despite having good actors, actresses, directors, or even good stories, a lack of interest to create something meaningful has always plagued the industry. With the sudden rise in social media, odia audiences are more attracted to ott platforms or Hindi and south movies which contributed to fewer footfalls in odia films. Covid 19 also had a devastating impact on the movie industry marking the end of many notable and legendary actors and actresses. However, with a deeply rooted storyline and a praiseworthy performance from the cast especially from the lead actor Babusan Mohanty, this has proved to be a gamechanger that we have been waiting for almost 2 decades and henceforth brings the hope of the revival of the good old days.

As an avid movie follower and an Odia, Daman is indeed a breath of fresh air in Odia Film Industry. Very few people know that the industry has produced fine actors like Bijay Mohanty (NSD Passout), Mihir Das and Hara Pattnaik. Some of their movies which were made in the 80s are pure gold. Coming to Daman, what worked in its favor (in my opinion):
✅Brilliant cinematography, which does justice to the beautiful landscape of Malkangiri
✅ Sticking to roots (Odia culture is infused with local tribes, folk songs and this movie has integrated these elements into its storytelling)
✅Superb acting - Seeing Babu Shan pull of such a role was a huge surprise, given his past choices. But the support staff are so raw, that it enhances the feeling of reality
Hoping that the Odia Film Industry brings out similar beautiful movies based out of other areas like Mayurbhanj, Raghurajpur, Sambalpur and Kalahandi in future

Hey Jammy. I'm an avid viewer of your channel from past 5-6 years. I'm an Odia and as you asked what are the frustrating aspects of Odia Cine Industry in the last few years. I'll be mentioning most of the aspects below.
    1. Remakes (As you have mentioned) : Odia Cine Industry has a great romantic story even better than Titanic and Twilight with Remaking movies. From Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, Bengali .... Our Odia directors have not spared any good movie. From past few years Bollywood is in love with Remaking old hit songs (Thanks to Neha, Tanishk) and Our Odia industry is doing the same but with movies from other languages (Thanks to those 3rd Class Directors). They have just copied and pasted the same formula with lower budget, mediocre acting and that to scene to scene copy.
    2. It's always not about copying. There has been many movies which are not copied but still they suck. They really suck bcz all they want is money. So they will just make movies which have Massy Action(with Below Avrg Script), Item Numbers, Cheap Comedy ( On Weight, Transgenders etc).
    3. STORY : The few movies which have released other than the remakes doesn't have good compelling stories.
    4. Monopoly of Hand picked of Frontline Actors : Odia industry lately has been struggling to find Hero material actors. We don't have good frontline actors who can be considered as a Hero in terms of Acting. Every movie industry have at least 10-15 front line actors (Hero) but we have only 5-6 (in My POV) And other than them I don't think others can even Act...
    5. Budget: Honestly after seeing the success of DAMaN. I don't really think budget is a constraint. But if you see all movies can't be made under a limited budget. Some stories require more budget for better visuals, graphics, crisp editing, VFX etc
    6. Marketing: Lately there has been few good cinemas but they don't get attention of viewers just bcz of poor marketing.
PS: PLEASE PIN THIS SO THAT MORE AND MORE PEOPLE CAN REAF THIS.

When i was a kid i used to consume the older Odia films every Sunday. The stories were simple, rooted in realism, relatable, nuanced n heartfelt. There were stellar actors like Bijoy Mohanty who passed NSD alongside Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri etc. He was a National Film Awardee as well.
The earlier Odia films were never about "masala". Even the big commercial films were family oriented (focused). Hence the masses from rural areas connected to it. I really have innumerable fond memories of those films despite them being before my time.
I think the Odia film industry started going down in the late 2000s , which is when the Telugu remake fever took over. It destroyed all creativity amongst the filmmakers in lieu of making cheap profits without effort.
Lack of govt support for the Film Industry, reducing interest of the educated masses in subpar Odia content, lack of amenities to nurture quality actors n technicians are various aspects that led to the downfall of our once flourishing film industry.
I hope with Daman, the interest in quality filmmaking arises again.

I think the main problem in Odia cinema in recent years is the lack of creativity and poor performance of the cast. The remake culture of some not so original story has ruined a good industry. When I saw the thumbnail where it was written 'dying industry', I felt that it was unfair to treat it as dying. It can be more of an 'industry who had lost its way', but with DAMaN movie, Odia industry redeemed itself and is currently showing to the entire nation how a good movie can be made with less budget and a solid storyline. Being an Odia I have never watched an Odia movie in the theaters since my childhood but DAMaN trailer just took me by surprise, kept me interested till the very end and allured me to book tickets on the first day itself and watch the movie in Odia. It was an amazing experience, and I loved the movie from the bottom of my heart and felt so proud of the entire team and the actors' performances with every passing minute of the movie. I think the main problem in odia movie industry is lack of originality. Everything they produce are copied or remake of some other movie. Not just movies but songs also. Even the original songs which they rarely make, have so many words in hindi and urdu like 'saiyara banzara, sawaria, sufiyana, etc etc. After year 2000, the golden era vanished and their only goal became following the typical Bollywood. But I'm really happy for 'daman'. It is definitely the lotus in mud. And I just hope the industry will learn from the movie that what audience are really looking for in a movie.

Finally some regional movies getting their deserving recognition instead of typical pseudo bollywood material, cinematography is at his best, emotions are so touchy that I cried in first half, one of the reasons why this is one the highest IMDb rated movies from India.

Thank you so much for putting forth your views on Daman, Anmol.
Hope you stumble upon this comment.
*Please note that I've not been an avid viewer of Odia movies and I'm writing this with the limited knowledge that I have.*
As someone who is from Odisha, the success of this movie feels personal on many levels. The Odia Movie Industry came up with several gems decades ago, namely Nirbachana, Biswaprakasa, Magunira Sagada, Sesha Srabana, Maya Miriga, Matira Manisha, etc. But then, it made several dissapointing films after that which were mostly crappy, over the top and detestable.
There was a time when the audience was frustrated to a point that they started looking down upon the industry and lost all hope in it, owing to the industry's lack of efforts in making good films.
Then came a great effort by Nila Madhaba Panda in the form of Kalira Atita, in 2020, depicting the story of a village gradually getting submerged by the ferocious ocean. But, sadly, it failed to grasp the attention it deserved.
In September, last year, came Adieu Godard, which managed to attract eyes of viewers in many parts of the country and as far as I know, it also became the first Odia Movie to make it's way to International Film Festivals. But, still didn't make much noise among the local viewers.
Then came Daman in November, 2022. Right from the time the trailer dropped it caught the attention of many people, waiting for it with bated breath and much hope. When it hit the theatre, people showed their support in the best way possible. There was gung-ho in the air and people were ecstatic as a note-worthy film from our industry was finally getting the much attention. This movie accomplished in restoring people's faith in the artistic ability of the Odia film Industry and winning the hearts of the people of Odisha.
I really hope this doesn't stop here. I hope the viewers demand even better stories and the makers come up with even more note-worthy projects

The same mediocre love drama,.. songs lacking the melody of the old golden era of Odia songs,.. no effort at all in the direction and acting to portray any realistic stories or anything new,..
Daman came as a breakthrough ♥️
The nation needs more of our regional movies, bringing the state and the beautiful stories into movie lovers notice.
This movie should serve as an inspiration, you don't need a big movie budget , rather simplistic and realistic acting, story writing and direction is enough to capture people's hearts..there are lakhs here who are still waiting for movies like this and not just any mediocre mass love stories

Hello team TRP ! I was really looking forward to this review.. I am from Odisha and I am a doctor too … So it is obvious for me to relate this movie in real life … The production team has done a really great job considering the current scenario in Odia movie industry.. Once this industry was known for its great story telling particularly in the field of family dramas and social issues .. But things got changed after 2000s … Movie makers focused more on remakes and the glory faded … Even the production has been so bizarre that you can’t even find an HD version of the cinema … Being a cinephile I won’t say this a very great movie but surely it has been quite an achievement for Odia industry after so many years … And being a doctor I personally feel this movie will change the attitude of people towards doctors which has been a serious issue now a days …

We have a very rich and old culture and there are so many great books and stories those if made into movies, it will be pan India hits. But the approach should be genuine. Another book adaptation is coming in the name of " PUKSARAA" which is deep rooted to its source material. At present it is production stage. What I feel is present generation of movie makers in Odisha are really enthusiastic and passionate about the art. And hopefully we will see many more good work like this movie. I remember growing up as an Odia I used to feel cringe watching the movies from my own state. But one specific movie is imprinted in my mind really well even though I don't remember its name. The movie was about caste system, superstitions etc. It was all performed by regional actors which made it look like I'm watching a real life incident rather than a movie. I really regret not being able to remember the movie's name because even as a kid I was really captivated by the story. And I absolutely agree that when compared to the retro times the current movies feel really cheap and cringeworthy to watch. There was a rawness in the older movies. We've got several awesome stories and folktales from the state that needs to get the rightful attention.

Firstly, seeing DAMAN's review on your channel gives me so much joy and pride. It's the second Odia movie of my life that I have watched till date and in a theatre because of the hype it has created. After watching it in a single screen cinema hall back in Bhubaneswar in our native language with a packed theatre I could not help but accept that it does live up to the hype. I could never imagine Ollywood had it in it to produce such a gem. Barring the technical aspects and yes the scenes being inspired from Panchayat and Swades, which honestly is quite glaring and impossible to not miss, it does a fair job of showing it as an inspiration instead of a bland copy.
Wish this glory continues with more such Odia films coming in the future.

The problem with the Odia film industry, termed as Ollywood, has been inability of filmmakers to remake South movies. Every industry does remakes, but the way filmmakers adapt the story and present it for the local audience should differ. This is where filmmakers from Odia film industry have faltered. To match the tone of the performances done by actors down south, Odia actors started going over board with their performances, eventually leading to disappointments. This industry has the potential to go big, but the restrictive mindset of filmmakers of not understanding the audience's needs has pushed the industry back. Daman comes as a refreshing change. Would recommend you to watch Pratikshya starring Dipanwit Dasmohapatra is lead role.

I am from Odisha and I have stopped watching odia movies for more than 10 yrs. In my childhood the stories were true to the society it catered, humble yet soulful but with time the tone got louder, the craft of acting started fading. Now the Odia film industry is at it's ruins, not a single new praiseworthy actor actress or movie in the last 10-15 yrs.
In these times the intention, the truth inspired storyline and the realistic on the ground approach of this Movie Daman makes me happy and hopeful. Daman is indeed a rare exception for our film industry, certainly not the only one but it is the one that dropped the bomb. You've pretty much mentioned all the problems with our cine industry but in my opinion, the biggest problem is the lazy and incompetent "mainstream" film makers who don't give a crap about the art. And the general audience too share a part in the problem as they have been dictating the trend in films till now. But with Daman and followed by "Pratikshya", which also features Dipanwit (a theatre artist), I certainly see the winds changing. I'm not necessarily being too optimistic about this but definitely keeping that hope alive in my heart for this time.

    Hii 🙋,
It really feels great to see an Odia movie dubbed in Hindi and getting national fame. Adding on that, I would also want to pivot your attention to "Western Odisha Film Industry" (Sambalpuri Films) , YESS There are more than one movie Industry in Odisha itself ‼️I would recommend you to watch "Bhuka" (First Sambalpuri Film), "Salabudha" , "Aadim Bichar". They are really some great movies. Even some of them got National Awards.
P.S. - All those mentioned movies are available in TH-cam.
