Congress Won't Do Their Job | Fresh Tracks Weekly (Ep. 85)

  • This week, we are continuing the series talking about transferring federal land to the states and, in particular, how Congress has the ability to fix a lot of the issues with land management; they just refuse to do so.
    Some other news stories include;
Trump’s executive order to pause federal grants and funding led to panic and confusion amongst many in the conservation world as billions in funding was about to be cut off.
A bill in Wyoming popped up that would have made private landowner tags transferable, sending wildlife down a path of privatization.
Another bill in Wyoming aims to make mountain lion hunting wide open within the state.
At the national level, a bill has been re-introduced into Congress that would require congressional approval for the sale and transfer of public lands to non-federal entities in most instances.

Marcus and Randy ------- the best statement of your whole video was when Randy said "I would fire the trustee" --- that is exactly what needs to happen in the congress! We keep electing people that tell us they are representing our best interest ---- but they are representing the people that give them money! Clear to the very top!!! And if ideology makes them money --- they will represent that ---- as you eloquently stated!! Common sense and logic are the new endangered species!!!

Yet, you can use livestock and grazing to manage all of the land, especially now with virtual fences.

We are living in an Oligarchy, where the rich with unlimited sums of money can buy our legislatures/congress. The push to privatize public lands is coming from ultra wealthy people. It will be a very tough fight to keep lands for the common man.

Just a little background on the Utah attempted land grab recently. The Utah legislature is home to several Real Estate moguls. They would love to see Federal lands in the hands of the state so that parcels can be carved out for 'development' . Utah's Govenor Cox is onboard with this deceitful scam. The start of Utah really has no desire to manage public lands and keep them accessible. Utah wants to make them off limits so they can create cabin sites and ski resorts. As hunters, fishermen, and outdoor enthusiasts, it is our task to get rid of that Govenor Cox sucker and his crooked cronies in the legislature. If not, Ivory Homes will proliferate, and Utahns will have no place left to recreate.

Idahoan here.... I pray to God federal lands ARE NOT transferred to the State here in Idaho. IDL will either sell off to private, or log the $h1t out of it if they get their hands on it.
IDL has absolutely destroyed every acre of wildlife habitat they manage near me...
Just the opinion of an Idaho Outdoorsman who lives in Valley county and sees first hand the difference between state and federal management.

Many are quick to blame randy and meateater for the influx of hunters and overcrowding but wont admit that randy and other hunting media are who they run to first when they need someone to fight for us. Thank you for fighting and spreading awareness. Share share share!

If you think Trump or his ilk have your best interest in mind you are sorely mistaken. They (the billionares) are working really hard to accelerate the transfer of public lands to states which will then sell them to the highest bidder. Our government has been bought by the wealthy. You don't have a chance of affecting change when you are up against unlimited sums of money. Welcome to Oligarchy.

Why would a rich man care? Don can hunt no matter who owns the land. And maybe he would like to be one of the owners of that land after it transfers to the state landl board.

The biggest problem with the Endangered species act is that concept of single species management. You have a hard time managing for one species without having possible impacts to orhers

Couldn't agree more! Especially regarding the wild horse debacle. This is the common sense thinking the president talks about. Have you approached him? He seems to favor people with some celebrity/social media following.

Has any thoughts, specific to mule deer, been given to the conditions that wildlife were left with after the late 1890's grazing? Soil loss, loss of vegetative diversity, yet it paved the way for shrubs and the resulting mule deer populations.

Why the hell would we as public land hunters not want more hunting pressure on private land to drive game back to public? This proposal sounds completely acceptable on a scientific standpoint. Our community tries so hard to make envy look virtuous!

Its disappointing to hear Marcus use anti-trapper talking points about the WY bill. What significant "by-catch" are you talking about? NM proved in court several years ago that regulated lion trapping was not detrimental to other species including endangered species like Mexican Gray Wolves. The groups suing to stop lion trapping could not provide a single example of illegal "by-catch". Regulated trapping is a selective and humane method of taking predators, including lions.
Ive not reviewed Wyomings bill but it is a response to ineffective management of predators prevalent in western states over the past 50 years. The "settled science" among biologists has been that predators do not significantly impact prey species populations. That is a gross oversimplification which can be true but can also be completely false.
Lion populations are extremely high in the west and in many places they are artificially suppressing deer populations. Is the WY bill the best solution? Maybe not but allowing hunters to take lions they catch in legal traps seems like a pretty common sense idea. I dont want lions wiped out but there are a lot of places where lions are not being harvested at high enough rates.
