ok, I get it. But if you are asking versatility, 270 Win. Period. Flat shooting, powerful enough for most anything and a wide assortment of bullets and bullet weights. 100 grain to 150 grain in all bullet styles. 160 Nosler partition will stabilize in a 1:10 twist and launch 2750 to upwards of 2800 fps. That'll lay down most larger NA game without issue. Very reasonable recoil too.

@Adam - South Africa and a 30-06 is like corruption and the ANC. They cant go without each other. I shoot a 30-06 AI when I'm not sure what I'm looking for that trip, but just looking to fill the freezer. Its super versatile, accurate and hits like a hammer. The 30-06 Springfield is literally an international cartridge. It's even popular in Europe. Probably because of 7.62 NATO creating a plethora of manufacturing surrounding THAT common caliber - barrel tooling, bullet design, etc. FNH shipped many M24 commercial M98s all over, including some to Swedish maker Carl Gustav, who made them in several US calibers, the most numerous being 30-06, if GB ads are any indication. And no weak old pre-98 actions to worry with...though the early "American Mauser" (M1903) had some metallurgy issues, which renders the oldest ones unsafe with full service loads regardless.

Maybe I am just an old soul but .30-06 has been my big rifle round my whole life. First rifle at 15 was .30-06, all my male relatives used it and guided me to it. Finally started doing long range shooting and I still love it, even the "cheap" (still like .75c a round!) ball ammo I shoot is getting sub moa past 500 yards, and its just fun as hell to shoot a big bullet. I really like 6.5 rifles I've tried but I think Im just a glutton for recoil cause it feels so anemic.

A lot of it depends on where you live and hunt. Most guys where I'm from start with 243 win and then graduate to a 270, 30-06, 7 mag, or 300wm as an adult. Antelope, Mike deer, elk, black bear are the most common game and those calibers give you the ability to cleanly take them all

I was able to buy my first big game hunting license when I was 14 years old. Fifty seven years later I still hunt all the game southern Colorado has to offer. I carried a Rossi Puma 20 inch .357 carbine in my truck as a truck gun. I harvested three elk with that rifle. Chose a rifle that isn't to much overkill and will overlap when considering game critters. After years of handloading for all the rifles I've owned I got rid of all magnum rifles except the .300 win. mag. but I gave it to my son. My choice if I could only have one cartridge to hunt anything in Colorado would be my .275 Rigby (7x57).

Great discussion. Here’s my take for the guys who can’t afford many different rifles. The guy who can get one good rifle for all purposes. The old .30-06. Not trying to be a Fudd, just realistic. The .30-06 is readily available and there are a lot of bullet designs and weights available. It can be loaded heavy or light. Get a 220 grain for bear, a 180 grain for moose, a 150 grain for deer… It’s way overkill for prairie dogs, but will adequately tackle any large game. I’ve personally shot moose with a 165 grain A-Frame and it went down quickly with one shot. The recoil is manageable. Ammo is easy to come up. Lot’s of rifle options. It’s a great choice for those who want an all-around gun.

Hi Jim. You mentioned your kids shot a Blue Wildebeest in Africa,. The picture is actually that of a Black Wildebeest. We have a hunting ranch in Africa and have quite a couple of Blacks. The smallest cartridge recommendation is a 6.5 mm, however, we prefer clients to use 7mm or bigger. BW's are tough buggers and are known as the "poor mans Buffalo". It is much more difficult to hunt than the Blue Wildebeest. Blacks are plains game animals where as Blues like bushy terrains, as a result you will be lucky to shoot a Black at distances shorter than 150 meters, and most of the time with a stiff wind from the side. 7PRC in 168gr or higher will be an ideal choice. Tx for great content..

@@AllAboutSurvival Imo that makes zero sense more animals have been killed with sharp rocks, than all the gun kills combined, it is shot placement with a good bullet that kills , a gut shot animal is still gut shot no matter if it is a 22 or a 338 lapua you do not need to own multiple rifles to hunt different species you need to be good with the one you shoot.

    • @bushleague3472

I agree with this, especially the "matching to habitat bit", which is often totally forgotten about. A 7mm mag might be a good round for moose, but in a huge majority of their range they are generally hunted in thick brush, and something that works out of a shorter barrel is a better choice IMO.

.308 for all of it actually, just using different bullet weights but default to 180 grain if you have no choices. All these newer or popular cartridge choices are fine. But I have used a .308 bolt gun for decades on nearly all your game choices with great results, why change ?

308 offers some great advantages like bullet availability, good barrel life, and reasonable prices for a box of ammo. Also if you want to hunt with an AR style rifle an AR 10 in 308 is a solid option. Lots to love about a 308 and I bet all the animals on the list would still be dead with a 308.

You aren't taking into account the terrain factor IMO. Especially for moose which, outside of the outfitted Disneyland experience, are often hunted in thick bush. I took my 11th moose this year, tracked him in the snow and made a quick snapshot as he rose out of his bed at 60 yards. For that type of hunting I'd take the 30-06 I was carrying over any rig you mentioned.

Being in Canada the cost of ammo becomes a big issue, why pay $95 a box in 7mag when you can get the same bullet from the same manufacturer for $50 a box in 30-06....this same issue cuts out all of the PRC's the 8.6 western and all of the other newer calibers as they cost more than the 7mag.

Are the full stock options a good alternative for someone who wants a field and range rifle? Stuff like that, your thoughts on the situation as a whole? I know I've seen you take a chassis system hunting was that because you were in open country and using atvs so getting hung up on branches was never really going yo be an issue? It’s interesting to me that 7rm and 7prc, 300 win and 300 prc each in their respective classes are basically ballistic twins yet most chose the older cartridge. The trend is certainly short barrels and lighter recoil which no one spoke to, these are their choices but with the wealth of knowledge and resources these guys have ide love to see some info or testing on 20-22” rifles. I’m a firm believer that speed kills especially when paired with efficient bullets but I have to admit it is way more fun using my shorter barreled options. What says the masses?
