This might be the greatest discrebtion of SUPERMAN ever man! You have some of the best words, ways to tell me all about these characters who o I never thought I might grow with. I few years ago I was broken, sad in an never ending down world spiral of depression, I was lonely having no friends issues that I didn't know how to handle them but then when I was at my lowest point I started to take an interest into comic books and superheroes and a few months later I found one of your videos it was the worst superhero show one and funny thing is that I actually like the I know to you it's the worst but to me it was actually my starting point to loving DC and to understand the world of DC and you weren't the one who inspired me to love superman! Thank you Alex thank you
My favourite Lois Lane adaptation is from MAWS. I expected to like her but she was absolutely stellar, blew my expectations out of the water. Her relationship with Clark was by far the highlight of the series. She had the fiery, unrelenting attitude that I love from a Lois Lane adaptation mixed with a loveable sense of inexperience, sincerity and dorkiness. My favourite Clark Kent adaptation is from Superman & Lois. Tyler Hoechlin plays the character to perfection, like the character from the comics leaped onto the screen. He truly feels warm, kind and inspiring. He is allowed to make mistakes, to have flaws, but these mistakes are always rooted in a selfless desire to do good by the people he loves. The recent season of S&L had flaws but I loved it regardless because of that beautiful storyline where Lois, Clark and the rest of the family have to process and get through Lois having cancer. We’re going through a renaissance of Superman media and I’m SO here for it.
A correlation I can’t believe I’ve never made, but love is the most human emotion, and Superman despite not being human, is one of the most human characters
My dad went to Superman: The Movie back in 1978. It’s one of the first movies on VHS he ever watched with me as a kid. To this day, it’s the most pure expression of Superman on film. Richard Donner’s wonderful direction. Ground breaking special effects. John Williams incredible score. So simple, yet deep at the same time, just what the character of Superman is supposed to be. Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder to this day have left massive shoes to fill for anyone who wants to play Superman and Lois. I will be awaiting to watch Superman: Legacy with great interest. We NEED an optimistic Superman film again in the worst way.
I remember a few months ago, in one of these eternal "what would Superman do if Lois died?" debates, one dude pretty much nailed it by saying "he would just be Rocky after losing Adrian". Clark wouldnt blame the world, he wouldnt become a dictator, he wouldnt move to another planet, he will still be Superman, he will still be doing the right thing, because just as he loves Lois (until the end of time) he loves us, so despite losing the love of his life, he will still be living to help us, the ones he loves. He would be missing a part of him, he will hide his sadness under a warm smile, but he will still be Superman, he will still be helping people, because...that is who he is...until the end of time.
CW's Crisis on Infinite Earths actually had a nice snippet of that where Brandon Routh's Superman experienced a tremendous amount of loss when Joker blew up the Daily Planet. He lost Lois, Jimmy, Perry, everyone. He went on to honor them by continuing the newspaper and making a memorial for all the lives lost. He even described his black and red symbol as hope cutting through our darkest times.
I would get down on all fours and beg James Gunn to have Superman Legacy be about Clark and his relationship with Lois. I don’t want a big world ending cgi blow shit up movie and I honestly think think Gunn will end up giving me my favorite adaptation of Superman yet.
I really think we are currently living in an era of a *Superman Renaissance* in media, now more than ever I believe people's audiences are beginning to fall in love with the character once again as we are finally being treated to content and media that truly understands what makes Superman such an important character in today's culture. *My Adventure With Superman is such a special show* and a wonderful take on Superman/Clark Kent, Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen (my favourite take on Jimmy in fact), the romance between Lois and Clark is TOO ADORABLE and wholesome while maintaining an interesting overarching story that feels fresh and unique. The show may not be perfect, like you said some of the villains aren't great and the designs are kind of bland, but by God, it just makes me so happy to see Superman get the respect he deserves again. Not just MAWS, but media like *Superman & Lois*, the current *Joshua Willaimson comic run of Superman* and of course James Gunn's upcoming *Superman: Legacy* which so far sounds amazing and sounds like he truly understands the character stating this is a movie about *"the power of compassion in a cynical world"* which is everything Ive ever wanted to see in a Superman movie. Superman is a very special character to me and my favourite superhero one of the reasons why Superman works is because everything he stands for will always be timeless and doesn't need to be modernised to fit today's ideals or values, we just need to learn to open ourselves up to his ideals and values, and rather being embarrassed by Superman, we should open ourselves up to him. Fortunately it seems like the character finally has a bright future ahead of him

@@brandawgz I would love to see a Superman game, on top of all the great and exciting Superman media we've been getting. After all characters like Batman and Spiderman have gotten multiple videogames over the years it's about time Superman gets one, especially with all the potential gameplay mechanics and stories they could tell in a Superman game.
@@milkiassamuel780 I completely agree, I’ve heard this argument before that it would be kinda hard to get right but I think if the property ends up in the right hands well probably get a damn good game out of it
The "Can you read my mind" sequence...it's dang near perfect. Some people think if the inner monologue that Lois has was cut out, it would be an all-time classic in the world of cinema. While that's not an opinion that I personally share, it's not one that I vehemently argue against, either.
Even Up In The Sky, which is mostly a very solo Superman book as he goes around places, Lois is still integral to it. The fact that he does wanna go back to her, but still refuses to give up on this little girl he’s saving, i think is kinda vital to that story
The beauty of superman is that he is a god that is doing everything he can to be human. Superman punching stuff is easy. He is so strong. He cannot be physically he needs to hold back constantly. This for him is easy. The hard thing is courting Lois, is finding the time to spend with her. While yes him tearing trough monsters is a spectacle we won't remember it. It is not worth remembering. What is worth remembering is him being gentle and peaceful. To have god step onto the same ground we step on and fall in love with an ordinary woman just because she is good. And for her to love him just because of who he is. We wont remember the epic battles we remember Clark in that field, the dance, the flight, the hug. We don't want to see what superman does. We wanna see what Clark does. And a lot of the stuff Clark does is because of his Lois.
*At the end of the universe, Strange visitor Superman was visited by the apparition of Lois Lane... "Your still the same farm boy...".* I saw it in a YT short and it brought me to tears as I am now going through a divorce. She was/is everything I've ever wanted.
That moment in Superman 78 when Lois is in his arms saying “You’ve got me. Who’s got YOU?” And Reeves gives that kind of boyish but knowing smile makes me cry every single time. That’s Clark right there.
“Superman & Lois” and “My Adventures With Superman” finally made me remember WHY the story of Superman is important. Each show actually left me feeling better about the world because of how both Clark & Lois look at it, and both characters inspired me to want to be a better person. There’s a reason James Gunn’s “Superman: Legacy” is my most anticipated comic book film from either Marvel or DC right now. I’m excited to see a perfectly cast Superman in David Corenswet and a perfectly cast Lois Lane in Rachel Brosnahan be given a new chance to shine on the silver screen by a creative who (simply judging off of how he has talked about Superman and what he means to him and the world) seems to completely understand why both of them are so important. Thanks for making this vid, Alex!
Besides the 90s cartoon, this movie is what made me fall in love with Superman and superheroes in general. I still have this movie in my top five. So revolutionary. Everything they do now with big superhero blockbusters is owed to this movie, even if you think it’s Batman 89, it’s really this.
Beautiful, and amazingly good use of Smallville scenes here and there. I'm currently rewatching it and while obviously flawed, still enjoy it so much, and great to see some sort of love given to it.
Every time HiTop releases a new video I am always amazed at the fact that he can take something I’ve seen thousands of times and make me tear up. Honestly a beautiful video. Love the content so much lol
Fuck you made me cry... Maybe because my mom is going through chemo and that entire plot from Superman & Lois wrecked me, or maybe because as a longtime Superman fan you hit the nail on the head with this. Hell, I've been a Diana/Clark shipper but I can't deny Lois and Clark's love story. Thank you for making this.
This is such a beautiful perspective on Superman and what his stories can be. A thoughtful and emotional video that caught me off guard with how much it affected me. Thank you for sharing it with us ❤️
Why I've always loved superman. Since I was a kid in 1994 Christopher Reeve Superman was my first, and I have followed superman since, as an autistic person who believes in kindness i relate as I don't feel like I fit in like superman ❤💛💙🫂 I used to get mocked for being a superman fan, but I don't care now because I know those people are just heartless idiots who can't understand themselves let alone why so many people love superman
Goddamn you Hi-Top, you got me all watery eyed with this joint 😥😥 This is one of you most beautiful and genuine videos. And summed up Superman storytelling wonderfully. Please keep doing videos like this.
I do think that the Superman and Lois series, as well as the my adventures with Superman series were great modernization stories about Superman. I also agree with this video's point that some of the best Superman stories are the those that focus on Superman's love.
Thank you somebody gets it!!! Superman and Lois are the main core of the story, they are the heart!!! ❤ His heart is always the thing that shining brightly especially when he’s with his friends and family, most importantly with the love of this life. Lois Lane is the key to Clark Kent’s story, it is what makes him human
Superman has always been a human first, he's just like any of us. We may not all relate to his selflessness or his goofy attitude but the one thing we can all empathize with is love
I wish more film makers understood Superman as much as Alex does. With Mat Reeves were finally getting someome that gets Batman but superman is in desperate need of that same love on the big screen. I need to get back into Superman and Lois because i watched the first few episodes and thought "This is how i have always seen Superman and he's finally here" i hope Gunn gets it right but i wish the Superman and Lois actor was in that movie so much. But i have faith in Gunn im sure he'll get it right
Given gunn's love for broken people being better and him having made me cry with 2 guardians movies out of 3 i am gonna say his take will be fun but at the end much life his other superhero work its gonna be emotional
That’s why to me personally Superman IS relatable, he can do things nobody else can but at his core he might be more human then any other human character. His capacity for love.
Once again a video essay that captures the essence and appeal of a character and uses this as a basis and focal point in showing us where a story around this character succeeds and where it fails. Well done, once again! You are one of my favourite reviewers because of that.
This video was beautiful bro. I love your content so much, every one of your videos inspire me and my dream of one day becoming a filmmaker. You've helped me better understand these characters that I've grown up with my whole life and I couldn't thank you enough for that. Keep pushing out this great stuff man. Can't wait to watch Jason.
I always love your superman videos so much! They always manage to bring tears to my eyes. Because of them I've fallen in love with a character I had previously written off. Getting into Superman and reading and watching his stories has been just what I needed in my life.
0:46 I love Slade, Deathstroke is one of my favorite villains, but somehow everything wants to adapt him into a story and somehow they always screw it up
And that is exactly what is missing from the recent live action movies. Where's the love? The small town stuff is always missing. I'd say this is something that even Superman: the animated series was missing this. I wanna watch their romantic relationship start and then grow. To progress throughout.
Always drawing tears out of the deepest depths of my soul through your videos. I cannot thank you enough for what you do and how you acutely assess these characters we all dearly adore.
This video sparked so many comments for me: 1) Saw the original on a screen once in my twenties (I’m in my thirties now) and it was still an experience in this day and age. ☺️ 2) MOS and S:R have the same issue for me which is great actor, bad directing/script. I really enjoyed Brandon Routh but I think the story/direction was terrible. 3) You hit the nail on the head with your comments/points. This video was wonderful. 4) Based on this video alone, I now want to give both “Superman and Lois” as well as “My Adventures with Superman” a shot as I wrote them both completely off. Thank you for another wonderful video. 😊
Superman’s meant a lot of things to me over the course of my life- from my childhood memories of the Flesicher cartoon DVD, to growing into adulthood alongside Cavil’s journey with the character (I found a nuance to both simultaneous journeys, strange as it was), to recently reading Tom King’s Up in the Sky and truly falling in love with what he means to us- the people who point up. It wasn’t until today that I thought about this love that connects this wonderful man to both the woman he loves and us, the people he inspires. It got to me. Keep doing what you do.
I really like how you write these videos, all the dramatic beats combined with the music and editing, its a very narrative experience. Can't wait for Jason
Bro, that tiny moment when you end a video, the screen goes to black, and its just me and my reflection on the screen... At that moment everything you just said made sense. That's amazing. Thank you.
I loved Superman and Lois that show was freaking fantastic and badass at least in my opinion, also I love season 3 it was really awesome and I am super excited for season 4 it’s going to be freaking amazing in my opinion, I also love Superman being a dad to his sons Jon and Jordan is freaking amazing in my opinion.
wow man! This was simply phenomenal! Making a grown man cry in the middle of the library at school! Keep up your amazing work! Would love to see a video all about Smallville some day!
I'm a fanatic of Christopher Reeve Supreman since I was a kid in the 80's, but Superman Returns and Man of Steel were disappointing to me. Until I saw Superman and Lois and My Adventures with Superman my faith was renewed. I love these shows because they truly undertand the character of Superman and yes, it's a love story
Great video! I agree that Superman works best as a romantic hero. To your point, I’ve always thought the best Superman adaptions also have the best writing/portrayals of Lois Lane. She is the key - to tell a Superman story that you want to succeed, you first have to ensure you get Lois Lane right. Understand her importance and why Superman loves her. Let’s hope James Gunn gets it.
I like ur understanding of Superman not wanting to fight or hurt ppl. It’s also something people complain abt in Superman returns starring Brandon routhe. I understand the film isn’t perfect but people complain abt how Superman never even throws a punch. I hate that complaint. It makes sense for him to js want to save.
ALEX you're so GOATED for this video. What a wonderful analysis on the most human emotion an alien like Superman can have. For the longest time I didn't mind Superman but I didn't hate him much like the general audience who thinks he's boring did. But Superman and Lois definitely changed the way I think of him and made me fall in love with the character more. Everything you say is so on point, you always know what to say. Much love dude!
I’ve been waiting for you to talk about season 3 of Superman and Lois, a season where I almost teared up every episode. Didn’t think a CW show(a current show) could tackle a cancer story yet they did and it felt real
hi, i just watch your video and it speaks to my soul man never have i seen such a good explanation of superman core value and why story writers today are abusing superman face and any superhero faces to write a story that just don't work and forget about the character itself, throwing out any kind of value they deemed "inappropriate " to their story
Man of Steel which is one of my personal favourite Superman films, still has this core to it. Lois and Clark feel like a duo. Batman always works well with a partner (even if he won't admit it sometimes), Robin, Alfred, Lucius, Selina, Gordon etc. But Superman is almost a God. But hes also a man at heart. He works best when hes working with someone. He can theoretically do everything. But his humility and love are his greatest strengths as a man. Its such a bitter shame to see them fumble after Man of Steel
I can't remember who but one of the Superman writers said we, the comic book reader should read Superman comics through Lois's pov. We should see and feel the wonder of Superman though her eyes 😊
love your videos, it’s really touching when you talk about Superman, did ever think about a video of Superman vs elite, one of the best super hero movies in my opinion
This is true, but I feel like you missed a huge part of the situation. Superman is a story of romantic love, Clark and Lois, of course. But it's so much more. It's the story of an alien who crash landed and was given parental love from two farmers in Kansas. It's the story of a godlike being from the stars who became so human that he could love every single part of his new planet. It's the story of a science fiction superhero who had platonic love for Jimmy, for Bruce, for Diana, for the whole league. THAT is what Superman is. Not just the story of an alien who fell in love with a human, but the story of an alien who fell in love with humanity.
Such a banger video it made me appreciate superman wayyy more,i never knew what drew me into superman i always though he had no point cause he is a God among humans but still i found my self drawn to the character and never knew why but this is it,i think the such a human side of clark and his life as someone trying to do right and trying to fight for what he thinks is right and fighting for the love he feels,im a sucker for slice of life anime cause is so human in a fictional world and i think thats the same reason i like superman and I appreciate him even more now,not Gonna be above nightwing on my list but he definitely went up on my lisy 💪🏽🔥great video like always
Superman saves people. Everything else is secondary. I also don't like how they tried, over the decades, to make superman be more like batman, or, if the justice league is close, all of a sudden, Superman basically becomes weaker. Superman is best as Superman, rather then dumbing him down so that they other characters can looker cool
superman is not a fighter. He will protect and save everyone, but he will not wage war. When an unstoppable force meets an immovable object, it surrenders. Superman has all the power in the world, he can do ANYTHING, but he chooses to be human. For the man who has saved the universe, nothing and nobody is too small or beneath him. When he couldnt save himself, he will always save others. Whether that be a teenager on the verge of suicide or a hospital room full of cancer patients, nobody is too small for the man from smallville
Great video HiTop! I think with everything going on in the world, we NEED Superman more than ever and while we wait for the new movie, videos like this will have to do.
Fudge everyone who says he's too OP, he's not relatable, he's too perfect, he has no edge. Fudge you. Did the MCU give Cap an edge? Cap is the MCU's greatest interpretation. When I want dark, I read a Batman story, when I want brutal, I read a Punisher story. If you want those things, you have many options to choose from. If you don't want virtue, that's fine, but sometimes I do, and when I do, when I want the purest expression of Right and Good, I want to be able to turn to Superman. Don't take that away from us. Keep Superman Virtuous. What HiTop Films loves about Superman, I love too.
Please do a retrospective on Smallville, if you haven’t already. I’m on my 2 rewatch and omg I have never cried as much as I watched smallville Tom welling really understood Clark completely I love it
The saddest part about cavil as Superman is you can clearly tell that Henry doesn’t agree with that take on superman and wants to play the optimistic Boy Scout but the director wouldn’t let him.
That's what I hear from a lot of people , "SuPERMaN Is BoRinG" or "He'S a mArY SuE " But Yet, from the comics I read, he can be one of the most human superheroes out there A man who take the time would help a kid fix his bike Talk to a suicidal person And lead one of the greatest superhero teams in fiction Clark has never been perfect, he has flaws, He's had trouble with his childhood and finding his identity, but he's never let that detour his optimism or sense of rights and wrong Superman isn't great because he could punch you into space He would Always look for the good in people, take the time out to be connect with people, even when it seems foolish But now we also want a "REAL" take on the Man of steel So we get people like OMNIMAN massacring a city or HOMELANDER having a bloodbath And say it's "REALISTIC" Not that those are bad deconstructions of Superman But often we want something so "REAL" ,That we often discard what's GOOD The simplicity of saving a cat out of a tree, Being a friend when someone needs help Or just simply being good We often miss that about each other... We often miss that about Superman... But it's just as simple as that The belief that people can be good, despite of flaws or what's "REALISTIC" And that's SUPERMAN
Watch the Lois and Clark show from the 90s. Basically made Superman a romcom and it was great. Been saying for years-give us a Superman movie that is, at its core, a romance as it’s main genre. Like how Winter Soldier was a political thriller. Hoping Superman Legacy will be that.

And a lot of the stuff Clark does is because of his Lois.
the fact that gunn cast superman and lois as coleads together for legacy is a huge reason i think it'll knock it out of the park
*At the end of the universe, Strange visitor Superman was visited by the apparition of Lois Lane... "Your still the same farm boy...".*
I saw it in a YT short and it brought me to tears as I am now going through a divorce.
Everything they do now with big superhero blockbusters is owed to this movie, even if you think it’s Batman 89, it’s really this.
a true soldier protecting our childhood love for good stories and better characters
Please keep doing videos like this.
ditto on that!
I do think that the Superman and Lois series, as well as the my adventures with Superman series were great modernization stories about Superman. I also agree with this video's point that some of the best Superman stories are the those that focus on Superman's love.
Every story is about love, but you are not ready for that conversation yet.
BvS isn't.
"Batman can never settle down with Selina Kyle"
Bale: .______.
0:46 I love Slade, Deathstroke is one of my favorite villains, but somehow everything wants to adapt him into a story and somehow they always screw it up
Superman Legacy should be this. Love story between Clark & Lois, and especially Clark & Humanity in general. And I'm sure Gunn is envisioning this.
And that is exactly what is missing from the recent live action movies. Where's the love? The small town stuff is always missing. I'd say this is something that even Superman: the animated series was missing this. I wanna watch their romantic relationship start and then grow. To progress throughout.
Maybe your best video. Made me emotional. Good stuff man.
This video really made my day. I've always loved superman and truly I think you understand what makes him so amazing. Thank you.
Always drawing tears out of the deepest depths of my soul through your videos. I cannot thank you enough for what you do and how you acutely assess these characters we all dearly adore.
This video sparked so many comments for me:
1) Saw the original on a screen once in my twenties (I’m in my thirties now) and it was still an experience in this day and age. ☺️
2) MOS and S:R have the same issue for me which is great actor, bad directing/script.
Thanks for this. You've explained why I love Clark and Lois better than I can.
Really making me cry here Alex. Loved your vids since I was in HS about 5 years ago, love them even more now than ever
I'd wish you'd get to work on a superman project, you understand the character extremely well
Haven’t watched it yet but I love the video Alex
Falling in love is a dangerous thing
I love Superman so much. Thank you for making this video!
hi, i just watch your video and it speaks to my soul man never have i seen such a good explanation of superman core value and why story writers today are abusing superman face and any superhero faces to write a story that just don't work and forget about the character itself, throwing out any kind of value they deemed "inappropriate " to their story
My Adventures With Superman made me a Superman fan!
Not a bad place to start. :)
I haven't watched the video yet, but considering how heavily John Carter and Tarzan influenced Superman, I'm not surprised by this connection.
That transition to the sponsor.... how did you.. how did you write that?! What kind of brain food do I need to eat to become this smart?!
Why did I not get this notified, it's okay tho I'm here now. Okay TH-cam unsubscribed me. Back subbed tho
God damn this is good man, this video deserves so much love ❤️❤️
Such a banger video it made me appreciate superman wayyy more,i never knew what drew me into superman i always though he had no point cause he is a God among humans but still i found my self drawn to the character and never knew why but this is it,i think the such a human side of clark and his life as someone trying to do right and trying to fight for what he thinks is right and fighting for the love he feels,im a sucker for slice of life anime cause is so human in a fictional world and i think thats the same reason i like superman and I appreciate him even more now,not
Gonna be above nightwing on my list but he definitely went up on my lisy 💪🏽🔥great video like always
Batman thinks kindness is lame? I hope you watched the episode of Justice League where he comforts a dying child.
Alex I triple dog dare you to write a Smallville essay
I can never trust you with how smooth you introduce your sponsors
alex i cannot believe you made me cry AGAIN. incredible work
superman is not a fighter.
I would argue Spider-Man is also a love story even more so than Superman
Damn man you made me tear up
Fudge everyone who says he's too OP, he's not relatable, he's too perfect, he has no edge.
Great video Alex something different and fresh! Can you also do a video essay on Blue Beetle?!?
Dang it man I got spoiled for superman season 3 i should have watched it earlier😂
Man of Steel’s heart is not on Lois and Clark.. but with Clark and Martha
Awesome ❤❤loved it 🙏🙏thanks mate
This is genuinely beautifully written!
Please do a retrospective on Smallville, if you haven’t already. I’m on my 2 rewatch and omg I have never cried as much as I watched smallville Tom welling really understood Clark completely I love it
Why do your videos always make me cry? 😢 well done sir
goose bumps. great stuff
Giving me a bit of hope
The saddest part about cavil as Superman is you can clearly tell that Henry doesn’t agree with that take on superman and wants to play the optimistic Boy Scout but the director wouldn’t let him.
That's what I hear from a lot of people , "SuPERMaN Is BoRinG" or "He'S a mArY SuE "
But Yet, from the comics I read, he can be one of the most human superheroes
out there
A man who take the time would help a kid fix his bike
Talk to a suicidal person
And lead one of the greatest superhero teams in fiction
Clark has never been perfect, he has flaws,
He's had trouble with his childhood and finding his identity, but he's never let that detour his optimism or sense of rights and wrong
Superman isn't great because he could punch you into space
He would Always look for the good in people, take the time out to be connect with people, even when it seems foolish
But now we also want a "REAL" take on the Man of steel
So we get people like OMNIMAN massacring a city or HOMELANDER having a bloodbath
And say it's "REALISTIC"
Not that those are bad deconstructions of Superman
But often we want something so "REAL" ,That we often discard what's GOOD
The simplicity of saving a cat out of a tree, Being a friend when someone needs help
Or just simply being good
We often miss that about each other...
We often miss that about Superman...
But it's just as simple as that
The belief that people can be good, despite of flaws or what's "REALISTIC"
And that's SUPERMAN
Had me fighting tears Alex. Beautiful video.
Cant wait to see your film gonna be so much fun
Great video, very moving! I do disagree about Superman and Lois season 2 though I don't think it really faltered at all, but respect either way
This was absolutely beautiful. Thank you.
An absolutely beautiful video, thank you!
This.. this was incredible.
Watch the Lois and Clark show from the 90s. Basically made Superman a romcom and it was great. Been saying for years-give us a Superman movie that is, at its core, a romance as it’s main genre. Like how Winter Soldier was a political thriller. Hoping Superman Legacy will be that.
Best Superhero ❤❤❤
What a great video. I don't know what to say, you put everything I had in mind about superman ans about Lois.
As always, great stuff
