This is getting me excited for my upcoming fourth visit to BG (in May). I like learning a little more with each video, I’m even picking up a few words here and there. Thanks!
Oooooo how exciting!!! You chose the PERFECT month to come. Spring in Bulgaria is absolutely beautiful. Oh, and I’m so happy you are picking up some of the language. I will be sure to speak in Bulgarian more in my videos with translations! If you have any questions or want some tips while you’re here be sure to reach out!
We went to Bulgaria as a family holiday when I was 8 years old, back in 1989. My Dad took us all there. I have some core memories from that visit! Such as - my Dad took us to the hotel restaurant on the first night and we all had goulash. The waitresses brought out these pots to our tables and poured parafin into the bowls and set it on fire to heat it up. It was so cool to see AND the goulash tasted amazing. As an 8 year old kid, I was sure I wouldn't like it. But it was amazing. Never tasted it's equal. Another time my Dad took me for a walk in a forest. We had no idea where to go, we just walked for hours. Saw a million squirrels and lots of deer. Then we came to this river (with no bridge) that had the most emerald green water. My Dad went looking for a bridge and left me there told me not to move, and while he was gone I saw my first ever snake! A tiny green snake slithered past me and into the water, across the river, and onto the bank at the other side. My Dad came back a few minutes later and told me wait and then this Bulgarian man on a small rowing boat pulled into the bank and we got on the boat! My Dad was trying to talk to him but neither of them could really understand each other, but this guy rowed us down the river for about 20 minutes and we came to a ramp near a road, and my Dad gave him some money and as we climbed up, I noticed we were right near the sea! So we walked down to the coast, along the beach until we hit the town again, then up and we found the hotel. The entire adventure was well over 4 hours but it was great, seeing the local countryside and the people (and a SNAKE!). Finally I remember the barman in the hotel sold this drink called "Spiders Blood". Well HE said it was spiders blood, and I believed him cos I was 8, but really it was some kind of fresh strawberry juice. It tasted amazing, I drank nothing but spiders blood for the remainder of the trip...
Wow.. just wow 😮 It sounds da like you have some truly amazing childhood memories from Bulgaria! I mean.. seeing your first snake while alone in a forest 😳 .. Spiders Blood! 🩸 🕷️ It sounds like what you would read in a book. The fact that you remember these details so clearly just confirms how struck you were by all these experiences. Simply amazing!
@@sistersofbulgaria9396 Yeah come to think of it, its lucky for me that snake was minding it's own business. My Dad could have returned to find a dead son laying by that river! XD I thought Bulgaria was a lovely place. We went to a lot of European countries on vacation in the late 80's and early 90's but I don't remember many of them, and none of them as much as I remember our time there.
This is so familiar to me. When my wife and I first met in Sofia she took me up an elevator to her flat. Wow. 24 years and two kids later; we still go back to Sofia and the little place in the countryside. Wonderful videos.
Glad you like them! My goal is to share Bulgaria with the world and hopefully spread some relaxing and happy vibes. It sounds like I’m succeeding so far based on your comment! 😃😊
I will be honest.. the grass is always greener on the other side and there are definitely some hardships but overall I’m very happy here. P.S. Hi neighbor! I used to go to school on the upper east side. PS 158 😃
It will be great to show the bulgarian renesance architecture reserves in koprivshtica, shiroka laka, leshten, bojenci, kovachevica(never been under ottoman rule and many more towns as well, because they were guarding the mountain passes and turks were forbiden to stay after sunset in this towns they were called dervenjii)zlatograd, jeravna and more, you can check on google ,not to get bored by my comment.....greetings from the danube, from vidin🎉
Not really... I would say it is mostly a gathering place for eating and parties, but it can be decorated with some hunting trophies and other traditional stuff that reflects the Bulgarian culture.. I'd say it is a similar concept to a Greek Taverna but of course it's the Bulgarian version of it, so it looks completely different.
Mmmm we call those “heejas” (not sure how to get the pronunciation across lol). I think the best way to describe a Mehana is a place of gathering for the purpose of drinking, eating and partying. They definitely have a hunt-ey feel to them so your description is not far off. Can’t wait to share this week’s video with you! It’s one of my favorites 😃
Thank YOU for watching! I was supposed to go to Veliki Turnovo tomorrow but am not well enough to travel yet and had to postpone 😒. It will happen живот и здраве! 😃
I was supposed to go to Albania a few weeks ago but had to cancel because I got sick from pneumonia.. hopefully I will be able to visit soon and share some cool videos on our neighbors!
The Mehana introduction was so cool. Designated special event party room... so cool. I feel like American homes used to come with "smoking rooms" in the 50's and 60's. Our neighbors very nice large home has one with padded swinging doors and a wet bar inside. All carpeted and cozy. Best believe there were some parties in there with lots of actual smoking! Ha
I’m so happy you liked it! Our Mehana is my favorite part of our entire house 😃 The smoking room in your neighbor’s house sounds absolutely awesome. I imagine some very fun parties went on there! 🚬 🍻
Haha isn’t Gosho the donkey just awesome! I don’t think that’s really his name but I assigned it to him after spending some time together 😄 🫏 Thank you so much for watching! It’s always so great to hear from you!
Thanks for the great video! I like the Lada. If I move to eastern europe, and I might, I would definitely have an old Lada or Volga. I can exercise a right of return to Lithuania from my ggparents, but I find them to be insane, so Bulgaria, Serbia, or Russia is more my speed.
Ooooo just wait until you see the car in this week’s video 😄 You might have another option to consider! I’ve never been to Lithuania and have always been very interested in what life there is like.
Ok… now this seriously made my day!! Thank you so much for believing in me and my channel. I plan to keep doing my best and the rest is up to luck I guess. We will see where it goes 😃🇧🇬🙌🏻
It's great seeing the different parts of your country. I can remember when they used to sell Lada cars here in the UK in the 80s. It's also no smoking here now in all Public buildings. Look forward to seeing more of Bulgaria. All the best 🇬🇧.
Just wait until you see the car in this week’s video! 😃😄 I will give you a hint… Baba remembers them well and calls them soap boxes 🧼 It’s funny because no smoking is technically a law here but so many restaurants still openly allow it… there must be some loophole lol All the best from 🇧🇬 to 🇬🇧!
That was pretty cool , the architectural buildings kinda remind me of Spain when I was there , it’s so colorful there even the food thanks for the tour , may have to visit that country . 🙏
How I wish I could send you some fruits and vegetables in the mail! It’s leak season now and I’m making sure to get my fill. Leaks in NYC were a delicacy (at least the prices suggested they were) lol
@@sistersofbulgaria9396 lol, well if thats the case, everything in America is a delicacy because of the prices right now. I wish you could send some also, but im afraid none of it would get past customs, not because of envirnmental reasons, but only because they would eat everything. lol
Thanks so much! I actually don’t think I’ve ever visited Vidin or if I have I was very little. There are a few sites there I want to see. So glad you enjoyed Bulgaria! 😊
Funny to hear about Costa Rica and the Cloud Forest because I’ve been there a few times and the whole country is way too expensive now and it’s not the place it used to be. Hopefully Bulgarians don’t get greedy like the Ticas have…I’ll be back in Bansko next summer…
Ooooo it was honestly so expensive. Don’t get me wrong… I LOVE Costa Rica but it definitely requires saving up. It’s “cheap” days are over 😄 Bulgaria has been really raising its prices too.. the same hotels we visit every year for spas are now double. I feel like people from other countries have this idea that Bulgaria is super cheap but it really isn’t. It’s good for our economy I guess but I get a lot of messages from foreigners complaining that they somehow ended up spending a lot on their trip here.
It’s great to see your videos. My only thoughts up to this point about Bulgaria are clearly ignorant (meant in a good way) and it’s nice to expand my perspective.
Ooo this comment made my day! Hearing from someone who doesn’t know too much about Bulgaria is really exciting 😃. I hope I can keep shedding light on this little Balkan country 🇧🇬
@ Yes, do so! It’s interesting to watch and hear you explain things. Maybe go a little deeper into cultural thinking, contemporary practices, religion, historical lessons and expectations of each other. That is water treaded lightly, I suppose, yet I think you’re easily capable of presenting those ideas without unintentionally starting some childish flame war within your viewership.
Interesting to see, thanks Laurie I recognised the word slivova - classic east European goodliness 😊 They used to sell Ladas in the UK before the '89 revolutions ...and I remember the original Skodas - I wonder how many people remember them. Before your time but they were similar to Lada quality.
Oh wow! How interesting that you recognized the word “slivova”. I’m guessing it has something to do with the popular Eastern European drink 😃. Just wait until you see the car in tomorrow’s video! 😅
Oh my god what is that music playing at the beginning of the video...?? I've heard that exact song before and I gave up on searching for it a while ago
OK, so first, I'm a MEGA FAN of your Baba's. Second, as an American psychic and Baba Vanga afficiando, I can sense that Baba was not a big fan of Johnny's! Johnny, you're so gorgeous, but Baba sees right through the veneer. Baba, you're my girl!
Was married to a bulgarian woman. Got 3 kids from the marriage. Visited Plovdiv and Kurdzhali. Maybe will go there with the kids one day. They know the language. Interesting video 👍
Lucky you! 😃 I find it very commendable that you guys taught your kids Bulgarian. I have friends in the USA who can’t even say hello in Bulgaria and they were born here. Thanks for watching!
Hello :) Well, to be honest pork is closely tied to our culture and served everywhere. Lamb is also a big part of our culture but available mainly around spring and it’s very hard to find good lamb if you don’t have connections with a farm. Chicken is available but not nearly as popular. Regarding social pressure, my honest answer would be yes. I have many friends from Iran, Turkey, Pakistan etc who have visited and they always tell me they feel very uncomfortable in regard to their diet. They would ask restaurants and stores to prepare/ touch their food with separate utensils (that weren’t used to touch pork) and said that they were ignored or even laughed at. I’m sure some Bulgarians have had different experiences but that is my honest answer based on my experiences.
We actually don’t in most cases 😳 Neither of my grandparent’s buildings have elevators and one is on the 4th floor and the other on the 3rd floor and 92 years old… this is a major problem in Bulgaria
Yes 😊 We have the word kebab in Bulgarian but it’s a different food. We call this a “shishche”. I will show you what we call “kebab” in another video 😊
@@sistersofbulgaria9396 Ok thanks, I speak Pushtu which is mainly spoken by around 100 million+ people in Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Sub Continent, South Asia, Central Asian countries and Iran etc.,. We call it Kabab n Pushtu by around 100 million people Called Pushtun

Hello from Bulgaria to beautiful Indonesia! 🇮🇩 I have a fun video on one of Bulgaria’s biggest markets. I will post the link below in case you are interested 😊 th-cam.com/video/ae0neyFJF6w/w-d-xo.htmlsi=IT4KtiTsmZnBFFqd
O.k. I am now gonna write you a very "looney tunes" comment, for which I am kind of hopeful I will be ~excused. My current opinion on the matter is that "honest madness" is better than "Insincere sanity". It all goes something like this: The thumbnail of your video is very ~taunting... It looks like you and your sister are top notch "sharpened" (ask around for this in Bulgarian, but it`s more or less how it sounds, it`s how we use it in ~our language at least) and aggressively ~inviting for... something. I practically had to postpone me watching it with an good overnight sleep amount of time. But to continue with what I were saying... "I am sorry I already promised Alina Mcleod" that when she moves from Canada to Bulgaria I will be marrying her :P. (I did state it is going bonkers dimension talk, so either stop, ignore and hate me or brace on :P ) Now the normal expression will be "she will be marrying me"... because I am the male... but erm "mentally so" will be a bit the opposite. + Duly mind, outside of me writing similarly crazy text underneath one or few of her videos on the topic of her home country swap this is all one sided fruit of my imagination :P. Point here being... actually now you've attracted me more (seeing how only your sister have boyfriend) (also keep, keeping in mind this is fun entertainment text, don`t put any weight behind it.. and be reassured, in case you aren`t already... it is always on my expense)... But I just don`t think it will last... (Outside of the real reason that you will never spare a second or a glimpse of attention to a scrub like me, and trust me I am not underselling here) it will be "too good to be true" (on my side 100% at least)... Like I will end up unpleasantly attached and it will severely "hurt" me when it`s over. With Alina we will actually ~"dislike" each other in the background for it to actually work out. (It`s very weird, but it`s kind of like that). I don`t feel pushing that particular explanation further for the sake of my own "core" sanity ":P (at least temporal one). The second reason is the phenomenon of "Babi" (I also like to type them in Russian... Babushki) Both my ~Babi have since few years Ripped. As much as at least one of them, if not either of them, but mostly 1 of them have greatly influenced my life... directly or by influencing the life of my father (her son) my aunt (her daughter) and my mother (her daughter in law)(because my aunt had no children of her own and was great role in my life too R.I.P. her too)... In my own personal idea and understanding of what life should be... I want no such things... and Alina seems to have non of those ~babi... around. Obviously it`s not like I am into grandpas either (or "dqdki, diadki (q = я on the keyboard in case you already attempt to type in Bulgarian Phonetic... thus is very often Q used for that lacking in Latin alphabet 2 sounds letter "IA". In fact in my current work life... some of my most actually able and supportive collogues are "babki" (hopefully they never read this :P)... they are up to 10 years younger than my own mother, but it`s what they rate on my interpersonal interaction scale at this point (my own grannies ended on 30+ years over those age tiers... I won`t exactly specify them on my interpersonal interaction scale, but once again... good people they were). Younger women for reasons need to be more ~compiled and reserved around me, as if they have thoughts, plans etc... while the more elderly ones can carelessly go all out ~harassing me (which is their way of interaction with me) based on their further evaporating actual care for what is going on, or what is about to, how it look... etc. +they can do it also from the standing ground of like at least 2 times the real life experience (which also used to be a lot more real pre Cell Phones generation) which makes it a lot less retarded "in the background" and thus a lot less annoying and easy to bear... Not that I like it at all... but it is some sort of interaction and for as long as I have to work and my work is involving other people... it`s how it goes... But if I could have a choice in my personal life... 0 of those would be the best. Now there is a bit more ~lack of sanity talk... I am not gonna go ahead and claim "you are having a good time" with your ~babki and it would be a shame pulling you away from them... which I will not, because I won`t do anything that will diminish your well being, which will mean me having to interact with them... which means Alina Mcleod it is... the end :P One again... this have all been humor with the intent of "good times"... Don`t take any of it seriously or personally. Bye.
Hahaha! I have to say, you really made my day!! You put such a big smile on my face. What a “looney tunes” story it was but a very interesting analysis at the same time. I remember hearing from you before and also really enjoying your comment. Too bad my Babki got between us! 😄 I wish you all the best and hope to hear another looney tunes comment again from you soon 😊🇧🇬
Thanks 👍 a great job a wonderful place !! I'm not sure why people are going to the worthless city ?? There laying off tens of thousands of people across Europe !! Much safer where you are completely beautiful!!❤❤
Thank you so much! I find this place to be paradise as well. People often have no choice but to run to the cities to try and make a living. Salaries in Bulgaria are awful and even worse in rural areas. Hopefully things will keep changing in the right direction and allow people to return to places like this. ❤️🌞🌹

Thank you so much 😀 ❤️
@sistersofbulgaria9396 most welcome, it my pleasure 🧡❤️😍
It is super nice school ❤❤❤❤❤, that is fresh fruits ❤❤❤❤, excellent❤❤❤❤❤❤, everything is fine, delicious ❤❤❤❤ dish❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much 🤗
I’m so happy you like the food!! ❤️❤️❤️
Delicious soup ❤❤❤,

I recognised the word slivova - classic east European goodliness 😊
They used to sell Ladas in the UK before the '89 revolutions ...and I remember the original Skodas - I wonder how many people remember them. Before your time but they were similar to Lada quality.
Oh wow! How interesting that you recognized the word “slivova”. I’m guessing it has something to do with the popular Eastern European drink 😃.
Just wait until you see the car in tomorrow’s video! 😅
@@sistersofbulgaria9396 Oh yes, the plum brandy 🥴
My dear,😉 "BITOV" means from everyday life, but yes we wild and savage 😘 and we love it!
YES! Perfect! Thank you for wording it perfectly. We are WILD AND WE LOVE IT! 🇧🇬

Oh my god what is that music playing at the beginning of the video...?? I've heard that exact song before and I gave up on searching for it a while ago
Hang on, let me check and I’ll tell you. I know what it’s like looking for a song or movie and not being able to find it .. sooo frustrating 😄

Oooooo you put such huge smiles on my baba’s faces! Hahah Jonny is a a great guy 😃
Parece uma comida muito saborosa...😋

Was married to a bulgarian woman. Got 3 kids from the marriage. Visited Plovdiv and Kurdzhali. Maybe will go there with the kids one day. They know the language. Interesting video 👍
Lucky you! 😃 I find it very commendable that you guys taught your kids Bulgarian. I have friends in the USA who can’t even say hello in Bulgaria and they were born here. Thanks for watching!
👍💐🙂

when are you going to plovdiv???
Soon! I promise 😃
First we will visit some very cool natural wonders if Bulgaria, then Pazardjik and then Plovdiv 😊
Hello, what alternative to pork is there if your diet excludes pork? Is there social pressure if someone excludes pork?
Hello :)
Well, to be honest pork is closely tied to our culture and served everywhere.
Bulgaristan da huzurla yaşıyabilirim Türkiye , Bolu dan selamlar

Population of the youths decreasing is common problem in many countries
Unfortunately yes… in Bulgaria it’s very severe.
at least you have elevators!
We actually don’t in most cases 😳
Neither of my grandparent’s buildings have elevators and one is on the 4th floor and the other on the 3rd floor and 92 years old… this is a major problem in Bulgaria
She's kabab is an Urdu and Peshatu language words . Any Bulgarian can explain these words having resemblance with Pushtu Urdu

"Бит" - няма как да има превод на производни на латинският езици, защото нашият е много по древен и богат. Ако отвориш Уикипедия, ще видиш че има превод само на езици произлезли от българският, така е с много съществителни. Просто нашият език е преди всички, латинският е изкривено произношение на древният български, оттам и всичко, и всичко 😊
Абсолютно сте прави! 😊🇧🇬🙌🏻

Unfortunately you are absolutely correct …
I wish I was your husband and spend the rest of my life with you ❤

O.k. I am now gonna write you a very "looney tunes" comment, for which I am kind of hopeful I will be ~excused. My current opinion on the matter is that "honest madness" is better than "Insincere sanity". It all goes something like this:
The thumbnail of your video is very ~taunting...
I am not gonna go ahead and claim "you are having a good time" with your ~babki and it would be a shame pulling you away from them... which I will not, because I won`t do anything that will diminish your well being, which will mean me having to interact with them... which means Alina Mcleod it is... the end :P
One again... this have all been humor with the intent of "good times"...
I wish you all the best and hope to hear another looney tunes comment again from you soon 😊🇧🇬
