PART III- Returning to “The Country Everyone Wants to Leave”: Bulgaria | East Europe
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 27 พ.ย. 2024
- The Balkan Country everyone wants to leave…. Bulgaria. With a population of 6.5 million and 2.5 million living abroad, Bulgaria’s population is decreasing rapidly. I am one of the few who returned to my roots and am on a mission to revive this Eastern European Paradise. Today my family is also stepping foot on their Motherland… and bringing an American who has never visited before with them. This will be interesting!
ABOUT ME:
My name is Laurie and I swapped city life (Manhattan, New York) for a simple life in a semi-abandoned village (Село) in the Balkan Mountains (Eastern Europe).
I literally woke up one morning and realized NYC wasn’t for me. I booked a ticket (the same day!), packed a little suitcase, and moved to my beloved teeny-tiny Bulgarian farm… lost in time. And when I say lost in time I mean LOST-IN-TIME. No time-crunching jobs, no watching the clock, hardly any internet service at all, really. Imagine a village from the Middle Ages… that’s pretty much what you get here. And I’m loving every second of it!
I went from living in a city of 8 million to living on an old, historic farm… population: under 40. From skyscrapers to crumbling abandoned houses. From fast food takeout to barrel grill cooking. The advantages of village life are endless…
Update: My boyfriend and I have saved up and begun renovating our abandoned ancestral homestead (farmhouse). It hasn’t been easy but definitely interesting and extremely rewarding. There is nothing better than farming, harvesting and foraging for our own food… and keeping tradition alive. 🌱

I am so happy to have found this channel. I have moved back to the UK, forced because of Brexit after 12 wonderful years living and working in Sofia. My plan was to remain in BG. With channels like this at least I can live in the virtual BG, merci Lori
Oh noooo 😔
Don’t worry… I’ve noticed that life tends to arrange things in such a way that everything works out in the end. I have many friends who moved from Bulgaria to the UK and love it!
You can live in Bulgaria through these videos and have the best of both worlds 😃🌎
As a New Yorker I was married to a hungarian girl we traveled throughout eastern europe,we loved Bulgaria ....I plan on going back by myself now.....
Oh wow! It sounds like you had the time of your life. I hope to hear from you again soon I know if you ended up returning! 😃
@@sistersofbulgaria9396 I'm a cardiologist and I'm looking forward to retire early ...so being single and orthodox that region of the world is so near to my personality... I plan on searching for real estate in that part of the world though my family is from Florence, Italy......My ex and I had a flat and a country home north of Budapest.....its funny for in Hungary in the villages they are filled with retired German people...lol It's cheaper for them to retire in Hungry than Germany. I must say you look amazing in those traditional clothes....Cheers from Manhattan
You are a good ambassador for Bulgaria. Your presentations are well put together and you have a great voice and the right attitude and personality. Next, is to organize tours and lead tours for people who want to experience it with a guide. It's worth considering...?
Thank you so much for this comment! It’s super motivational!!
I am planning to start doing tours. I am even considering having a few people come to our village for some agricultural/ cultural tours. I have some really fun plans but just don’t know how to get it started. I have some research to do and think the time is coming up for me to get this started. Maybe this summer 🤔😃
I am a Bulgarian currently living in Germany and i have been thinking of coming back for a long time with your videos i think im making my choice acctually, i am acctually looking to come back permanently in the next few mounts, thank you
Im returning too! I've had enough of Toronto and i love the content 👏 ❤️
No way! That’s so exciting!!
Where in Bulgaria are you returning to?
Thank you so much 😊❤️
@sistersofbulgaria9396 Sofia Lozenets neighborhood close to NDK but I'm also thinking of living in Galabnik Selo
You are right Laurie, my wife’s generation all left for different countries. My wife moved from Sofia to San Francisco for a job 24
years ago. Now that we have raised our children we are seriously thinking retiring back to the BG countryside. Your videos are wonderful. Keep making them!😊
It’s insane really how many of us have left and are now thinking to return! I truly hope you find what feels best for you. If you ever want any advice or opinions on what life is like in Bulgaria now please reach out!
I’m so happy you enjoy my videos 😊 Thank you so much for the kind words!
Very touching to see my Homeland after so many years in the US. I really liked this episode, the first one I watched, btw. Best regards from a fellow/former newyorker currently living in SoCal.
I’m soooo happy you enjoyed! My goal is to share Bulgaria with people who live outside our beautiful country (like I used to). I remember how much I missed it…
Best wishes from Bulgaria to SoCal! 🌹
@@sistersofbulgaria9396 Today, actually, marks exactly 22 years since I left Bulgaria for the US. What a coincidence! It's like ... it was yesterday.... Last time visited Bulgaria/Plovdiv was 10 years ago. Time flies! Поздрави и приятно прекарване в България!!
i want to visit now. You have beautiful country.
Welcome! I’m planning on starting to do tours down the road 😃. You never know, maybe one day we will meet 😊
Would be an amazing visit. Love visiting the old countries. 🫏
So do I! 🌎✈️
I hope your recovery is going well. All that delicious food, yum! Home grown vegetables. Im not crazy about the idea of cow tongue but everything else looks delicious. Your friend either has a good poker face or he really liked everything. 😉. Another great video, I really enjoy them.
I have always lived in Bulgaria and I have no intention of leaving it! Keep up the good work.
By the way, there is a format "Да хванеш гората" ("To catch the forest") on Nova/Nova News in which they present stories about Bulgarians who returned to Bulgaria and those who moved from big cities to small villages to live a happy, peaceful and healthy life...
Another great vlog! Thanks for sharing! I love Vitoshka Boulevard, and the restaurants in the day and the bars in the evening. The people are so happy to talk to you too. I have to say the food quality in Bulgaria really surprised me. Not just the variety, but the vegetables taste like nothing else. Looking forward to next Sunday, your commentary is wonderful, I could listen to you all week! :)
I’m SO happy you enjoyed! Vitoshka is always a really fun place to go. We spent a lot of time there this summer because my sister and Jonny stayed in a hotel nearby. I was so surprised by the variety of food as well! I have to admit, I haven’t had the best steaks in Bulgaria but we found a restaurant on Vitoshka that had pretty good steaks 🥩 . The raw fish (salmon/ tuna tartars) are still not very good but the vegetables are to die for.
Thank you so much for the kind words 😊 You gave me such a boost of motivation!!!
@@sistersofbulgaria9396 oh you are so welcome, thank you :) Oh and I stay at the Hotel Lion overlooking the Lion Bridge. right next to it s Cafe 1920, who serve the best burgers and other 'American' foods, if you miss that.
The most underrated cities are veliko turnovo, varna, nesebar and pleven. In pleven you can see the panorama, in veliko tarnovo the castles and the old town and in varna you can see how big cities look like on the seaside and of course in nesebar again you can see the old town. Also i think that oldest gold is in veliko tarnovo. And the most intresting think about bulgaria is that we have a desert in bulgaria, i am not sure exacly where its located but its an intresting place. We also have белоградчишки скали which is again an intresting place and shipka where the most importand battle for bulgaria during the russian-turkish war was located.
Bone journey sister belle family's ❤❤❤
Bonjour! ❤️❤️❤️
Good fun! I think that Johnny was in full diplomatic mode 😉
Hahah he was definitely a good sport 😅🤣
I have to offer him cow tongue again now that he is back in America and see if he accepts… that’s how we will know what he truly thought 😂

I would love to live there it looks very nice and peaceful
And I'm sure I would enjoy all of that delicious food it looks very good
*HOME-MADE CHEESE* we used to have a couple come in an old Lada with milk and home made cheese - every day they would have a tiny stall on the street here in Burgas, it was FANTASTIC
I dont know what happened - they suddenly stopped coming...??? Im hoping the cow is in calf and they will return soon...
I think Johnny the American is a nice kind person who doesn’t mind trying everything. Good for him ! He is definitely enjoying Bulgarian beer 😂 and the food. You are a fantastic ambassador of Bulgaria. Like the old ladies said in the village that Bulgaria needs more young people living in the villages otherwise we will miss all the goodies organic produce they are currently growing in the future. Thank you again . Love from Sydney Australia. ❤pazi se.
Since few minutes ago, I searched yr new upload which is phenomenal. Have a nice Sunday
This made my day! I’m so happy you are enjoying!! 😊💥
Well, you guys are almost German/Russian as pickled vegetables and fermented cabbage is what we used to do every fall. My grandparents, both. From my mom's side & dad's side, & parents always got together to make saurkraut and at times pickle the vegetables. The purple grapes are grown along the Ohio lake Erie shore line in in S Ohio nearer to the Ohio River. The are grown for eating and wine making. We always called them "Purple Grapes".
If young people are leaving Bulgaria, one of the reasons might be how hard it is to open a business there.
I've looked at this and the company requirements in Bulgaria make it impossible to move a small company there. Other countries in the region have much less strict requirements.
Obviously, fewer employers mean fewer jobs.
I came here in 2009 - started a business not speaking the language or reading the alphabet and by 2015 it was turning over €6 million a year. So it can't be THAT hard.
You get a solicitor and an accountant - 95% of them speak English, they sort the legalities out for you. I had to order stock with pictures and sign language for the first 2 years. I suffered an injury in 2016 that ended my running of the company but I doubt things have gotten HARDER to have a company here since it has modernised a lot since 2016
@@piccalillipit9211 My understanding is that you now need to provide employment for twelve Bulgarians before you can get business residency.
Do you mind if I ask how you bypassed this requirement? Or was it not in place when you moved to Bulgaria?
@@ChefEarthenware So you are trying to get a long-term residency visa via a business...??? Why would you do that? Are you in the EU?? You can just come here, if not just get a 5 Year Type D visa. The long term business residency visa ia a long term visa for people moving a company to Bulgaria.
You arrive as an individual with your personal visa or no visa if you are in the EU. You go to an accountant, you set up a company, you go to the bank and set up a bank account for the company, you take the bank docs to the accountant and pick up the incorporation documents, you go to a stationers and get the company stamp made up, It costs about €250 for an OOD which is a private limited company.
Its not complicated or expensive but it is slow, maybe a 2 to 3 week process or it was in 2009.
@@piccalillipit9211 Thank you. Either things have changed a lot or the information online is very wrong.
@@ChefEarthenware I dont think its wrong. - I just think you are looking at the wrong way of doing it. If you have a company of 250 people and want to open a branch in Bulgaria and wanted the branch manager to have permanent residency as part of his relocation package THIS is the way you would get that.
If you just want to open a business here personally - just come here and open it. If you need a visa apply personally for a Type D visa wich is quite easy to get. If you are European its even easier, jut arrive.
Great to see different parts of Bulgaria. Eastern Europe has always interested me since watching a TV programme years ago about Eastern Europe by Michael Palin. Thanks for the video. All the best 🇬🇧.

@sistersofbulgaria9396 we absolutely do have Ketchup chips. I really only thought they were here. If you mention them to Americans they look at us like we're crazy! Definitely need to visit Bulgaria. Seems very low key and probably less expensive than other parts of Europe I have visited(Paris, London, Malta, Rome) Those were crazy expensive. I think when these people leave, after they have made their fortunes or sewed their oats, they will come back to the selo, for simpler, quieter times. I think Johnny was being nice. I noticed he didn't really savor the new food, mulling it over to get a good taste of it, he just kind of quickly popped it in his mouth and chewed it up quickly to get it over with. But at least he was willing to try. Some people would even do that. Loved the video. Maybe next week will include the bunker?
Another lovely Video Stay Well
Thank you so much! You too!🍀
Quiet a few things made me smile in this video. First, is the Scara - Just as important to Bulgarians as to what McDonalds is to Americans. The second was the lady was trying to give you the melon in the village....every time visit my girlfriends Grandad's village we leave with shopping bags full of cucumbers, peppers and pickled vegetables. We get given so much and end up taking them back to the UK in our suitcase. The family and village fiends love that you appreciate what they have grown. The third is that your Grandma's flat is exactly the same as most of the Bulgarian flats I have been in with the displace cabinet and furniture....very homely and Bulgarian style. Is your sister Emily video shy? Would have liked to see her fella try some Rakia or see if he liked Chalga. Will be back in December for two weeks and staying in the flat in Sofia and then going to my GFs family in Plovdiv. What neighbourhood does your Grandma live in?
these are great.. I gotta stop Or I will be waiting for Sunday lol

Thank you so much! I wish I could send you some in the mail! ❤️😋
BTW "Shtastlivetsa" is the pseudonym of Aleko Konstantinov - a famous Bulgarian writer from the 19th century - and the restaurants are inspired by him and his time (hence the interior style). Great vlog as always!
Mashallah soo beautiful video and u r angel frm heaven

OK, this is a beautiful video we saw the diverse life in Bulgaria. I personally would prefer to live the rural part it is so peaceful, beautiful, slow pace and healthy. The food looks so appetizing and i would enjoy eating mushrooms because i am a mushroom freak, but of course i would like to eat the other dishes. Now i have a question for you Laurie, I watched the last 2 videos since your sister arrived to Bulgaria, however in the videos she is always turning her back to the camera is she a camera shy? Oh! i forgot to mention the cheese it looks so good my favorite.🥰
This was fun! I think Johnny DID enjoy it all. Possibly just a bit overwhelmed and we can blame some jet lag. LOL I'm pretty sure I spotted some боза on the table. 😉 Just an observation, as much as you love вашето село, I think there's still some градско момиче in you. Можете да изведете мечката от гората, но тя все още е мечка. Check your съобщения

I’m so happy to think so too! I love fun little places like this 😃🍭🍪🍩🍫
Nice country to visit
It really is ☀️
It's nice to have both ways of life, but life on the farm is better!
I couldn’t agree more! Best of both worlds but farm wins! 😃
I named my little black poodle after the capital Sofia! Sofia Josefina or
Sofie Jo.
No way!! How awesome 😎😃 🐶
I almost never watch the "travel" or "lifestyle" vlogs, hardly any travel or lifestyle content creator catches my attention but this time that was not the case. Bulgarian here, I don't live in Sofia, I find the city too overpopulated and noisy, I don't live in "selo", as I find that too quiet. I live somewhere in between the capital and the quiet village live. Also, your videos make Sofia at least tolerable for me, thank you! I am looking forward to seeing where did you take your soon to be US relative (I am awful at remembering all the words for the family connections here).
Well, I’m very happy you are enjoying! It all started by accident. I just picked up the camera one day and began filming my beloved Selo and comparing life na selo to life in NYC. I quickly realized I love it. Not only can I share our beautiful country, but I am also able to immortalize memories. My only regret is not starting sooner when Дядо was still alive (I used to spend summers with him and Баба here na selo).
It sounds like you live somewhere beautiful. I find that finding the right balance is key.
About Sofia… it’s definitely chaotic 😄😁😄. I come here to spend time with my other Baba and we mostly just go to the Pazars and sit down for coffee so we manage to keep things very calm and relaxing. I cherish the time I have with her.
Haha just wait until you see where we take Mr. America 😄😄😄! I think you will get a good laugh out of it.. especially when we take him to Selo! 😅
@@sistersofbulgaria9396 oh, I can imagine the culture shock. Though he seems like a nice and polite lad. I can bearly eat cow tongue myself, so I gotta give him credit for being courageous enough.
The best thing about where I live is that just a few minutes away from the city center is the mountain. Although my favorite city in Bulgaria has to be Varna.
Your baba seems awesome, bless her!
Very cool nothing like family
Family is everything!
I'd love to leave Toronto for Bulgaria, specifically near Bansko.

Que lindas..voce tem olhos castanhos e sua irmã verdes..😉
The Blonde on the thumbnail 😍😍😍.... But seriously.. Bulgaria looks nice... I like Varna .. ;) , btw... No IG??... 🤗🤗
The blonde in the thumbnail is my baby sis 👧🏼😊 She’s a bit camera shy but I manage to catch her here and there…
Bulgaria is truly heaven on Earth. We passed by Varna this summer and I was in love. I am hoping to spend a few days there next summer and film a whole episode on it.
Haha great question! I do have an Instagram but I don’t develop it professionally in any way. I just post for fun. I actually have a terrible habit of posting months after the pic was taken.. no idea why. Never was the biggest fan of IG.
I didn’t link it to my TH-cam because I post a lot of older pics from our travels and it’s more “glitz and glam” than farm and Bulgarian village. It’s also called “SistersOfBulgaria” if you want to take a look 👀. Maybe I should start mixing the travel pics with more recent pics from Bulgaria so that people know we are one and the same 😄
P.S. We originally created it together with my sis with the idea to post together so you’ll see a lot of that blonde there 😉😃
i pray, for you to our hindu temple . god bless your drem come ture 👏👏👏
God bless you and your family! 😊
I love this video! Amazing cause, and I think that we have a similar mission! Would love to get in contact and talk about how we might be able to collaborate. 😊
All the food looked great! With tomatoes being so prominently featured in the salad, do you need a something other than a oil/vinegar dressing? 🤔
I’m so happy you liked it! It’s truly delicious 🤤
We really only use oil and vinegar really. Most people prefer sunflower oil, though olive is healthier 😄
Simple, traditional... all that matters
I couldn’t agree more!
tabiki hem eğlendik hemde güzel yemeklerinizi gördük ve güzel ailende çok eğlenceli Türkiye den hepinize mutluluklar diliyorum
As a Bulgarian, I also like visiting Turkey my friend. A few days ago, we raided Edirne for Migros and clothes. And the restaurant (Hot Point) was amazing, too. I would have said Turkey definitely became more expensive, but it's still cheaper than Bulgaria.
Първоначално бях малко притеснен, но след това моят приятел ми напомни, че е смяната на времето в България 😁🇧🇬

So erm... I am now gonna display "skills" that I don`t actually have so any "result" of them should not be taken seriously in any form or way :P. Specifically I will comment on your voice... English "speech patterns" ~intonation mostly, pronunciation... Now as I've stated I've never been professionally trained in any of those and even if I were actually maybe a little.. my music hearing is probably very bad... a.k.a. I cannot for the life of it distinguish which sound comes out in which note ~ a.k.a. ding of a Glass with it`s tiny off resonance... like "upper La" ~ "Lower C" depending on the glass itself... or something. And last but not least I might also be biased by my some sort of agenda of my own, without even knowing it :P. Anyways. You look pretty "spot on" like serious and focused on whatever and whenever you are doing. In NY you probably were and are perceived by most as almost threatening lady or ambitious young professional (by people not young enough to see you on the old side yourself)... But your Bulgarian is so cute... like a kid. And I am not saying that in any bad way... That is what actually sincere foreigner Bulgarian sounds like... Also at the very near end I think I might have heard a sign of your "True English Speaker", "leaked (so that I don`t say "blead") through" your Bulgarian in your "good buy" and it is also ~good. But of course it takes effort to talk "that way" all the time in a foreign language, because it takes confidence and certainty in ~knowing what you are saying, which for 100%ting requires plenty intelligence... The point here is, given by your English... that intelligence is there, but you don`t feel and/or need to apply it to your Bulgarian... the result is ~cute. I am native Bulgarian speaker and I mostly sound like kid and/or retard like probably 70% of the time and I probably still am even when I don`t... sound like that that is... As for my English... my verbal English is really very malpracticed. Oddly enough I probably sound a lil bit more serious in it (at least for myself I do), because I am completely deprived of "care" for the reality of what I am saying in that language... which by the way is a bad thing... but it`s how it goes... I do still wanna say exact things with exact words.... but I guess I simply have not been in situations where talking in English have real consequences, so that my English could achieve "it`s real form" whatever that is... As in Bulgarian... I don`t think my Bulgarian life have ever been that serious either, I mean is just Bulgaria... our country have Population less than your previous >City
07:23 He didnt like this, same as me 😅
Hahah I don’t think so either 😅

11:52 why she said karpuz? watermelon in Western Bulgaria is ljubenitsa 🤔
12:56 Chio is a German brand
Good question 😃
“Karpuz” means watermelon in this region. It’s a specific dialect. Otherwise, “Dinya” is watermelon in Bulgarian
The Greek word for watermelon is karpuzi, there must be some regional connection.

I dont think Bulgaria is a country everyone wants to leave so I do not agree with you. I have many, many friends (especially from US) who relocated here permanently.
I agree with you that many foreigners have begun moving to Bulgaria but sadly young Bulgarians here are still leaving at an alarming rate. Our population went from 8million (which is low to begin with) to 6 million in a matter of a few years. My distress is that Bulgarians are leaving. I don’t blame them… the salaries here are just ridiculous… we feel exploited. 🙁
I hope things will improve but right now things seem bleak. We can’t even form a stable government.
I love my country but I also don’t like to sugar coat things.. life in Bulgaria is not nearly as inexpensive as people abroad seem to believe and life here can be very restricting.
@@sistersofbulgaria9396 , I have more than 10 bulgarian friends with US citizenship who came back in the last few years, and never wanna go back to US.

Not sure if this channel will encourage young Bulgarians to return since the cause of their departure remains unresolved, but it's a fantastic promotion of the country for tourism and retired Americans priced out of housing and healthcare who want to retain their dignity in retirement.
Search result: "Bulgaria accepts for living secured foreign pensioners and provides them with the status of temporary residents upon request. The applicant for relocation needs to have a permanent income in the form of state grants equal to or exceeding their minimum level in the republic - about 270 EUR in 2023. This type of residence is immigration, which means that the interested person can subsequently claim permanent residence and citizenship."
$270 EUR = $300.
Bulgaria's minimum income requirement is only $300/month. The average monthly social security check for retirement is $1,872. Quite a difference.
Nominal GDP is $107b.
Population is ~6.5m and per capita GDP is $16,500.
The average annual retirement social security income is $22,464.
Bulgaria is the poorest EU country and has the worst population loss ratio in Europe. Bulgaria's population reached an all-time high of 9.0 million in 1989. In the intervening 35 years it fell 28% and is forecast to fall another 21% by 2050. While GDP has recently been growing at 2% per year it will go into permanent decline unless Bulgaria somehow quickly offsets its population losses. Declining GDP means the death of more villages and the further loss of reproductive-age people. It's a vicious circle.
Long-term economic growth is needed to create opportunities that entice Bulgarians living abroad to return. This is impossible to achieve in the face of a declining population unless Bulgaria changes the game.
But how?
If 100,000 American retirees suddenly relocated to Bulgaria they'd bring $2.2 billion annual income with them. National population would increase by 1.5% while GDP would see a permanent 2% gain.
286,000 retirees would represent 4.4% of the national population (equal to the Romani minority group) and would bring a permanent GDP increase of $6.4b. This would save many towns and villages, especially if the Bulgarian government put rural relocation incentives in place. Both Italy and Ireland have government payment programs that encourage foreigners to resettle in rural areas. $6.4b injected into a $107b economy would provide an otherwise unobtainable economic stimulus.
Laurie is taking the first crucial step in saving Bulgaria: creating global awareness with history, culture, and enticing food. That last bit isn't to be underestimated. I suggest petitioning the government for a resettlement program aimed at American retirees. The American healthcare, medical bankruptcy, and housing cost crises aren't going away. Millions of Americans currently live overseas. Millions more are seriously considering doing so.
American retirees have many low-cost overseas options, including Columbia, Ecuador, Portugal, Spain, and Italy. Each provides affordable and better healthcare than can otherwise be obtained by the American middle class, along with affordable housing. Spain's healthcare is world-class. Receiving medical care abroad isn't new or novel as "medical tourism" has been a thing for 30 years.
Bulgaria needs to compete to survive.
Yeah and those americans and europeans are coming here to PRICE OUT US. This b!tch is trying to live off youtube money, that's all and probably has no rent. Real estate prices are getting worse and worse exactly cause of foreigners, digital nomads, retirees.
