Превеза град је у северозападној Грчкој и управно средиште истоименог округа Превеза. Упркос три различита погледа, које је академско друштво изнело о пореклу имена "Превеза", најприхваћеније гледиште је да Превеза значи пролаз, а да ова реч долази из словенског језика. Град Превеза се налази у јужном делу историјске покрајине Епир. Град се налази на јужној тачки истоименог мањег полуострва. Град је приморски, смештен на обали Јонског мора, тачније на месту мореуза, којим се Залив Арта везује за отворено море. Област Превезе је веома прометна, јер је пресеца се важан пут Јадранско-Јонска магистрала, а на овом месту се у овај пут сустиче много месних путева. Клима у Превези је средоземна.
У доба антике област Игуменице је била део подручја старе Грчке, али изван главних историјских токова. У каснијим епохама долази владавина Римљана у 2. веку п. н. е. Тада је град био познат под именом Никопољ. Из овог раздобља позната је Битка код Акцијума, у којој је коначно Октавијан Август победио Марка Антонија и Клеопатру. После тога долази владавина Византинаца и на крају Турака Османлија. 1538. године овде се десила битка код Превезе, између Турака и хришћанских земља под Папиним вођством. Град је поново постао део савремене Грчке тек 1913. г. Други светски рат је тешко погодио град, јер се град налазио на линији фронта првих пола године ратовања. Префектура је протеклих деценија била осавремењена.
Превеза данас има око 20.000 становника у граду и околини. Становништво су углавном етнички Грци. Превеза је одувек била развијен приморски центар, а то је и данас (поморство, рибарење, поморски туризам).
Preveza is a city in northwestern Greece and the administrative center of the eastern district of Preveza. Despite the three different views, which the academic society presented about the origin of the name "Preveza", the most accepted view is that Preveza means passage, and that this word comes from the Slavic language. The city of Preveza is located in the southern part of the historical province of Epirus. The city is located on the southern point of the smaller peninsula of the same name. The city is coastal, located on the coast of the Ionian Sea, more precisely at the place of the strait, which connects the Gulf of Arta to the open sea. The area of Preveza is very busy, because it crosses the important road of the Adriatic-Ionian highway, and at this point many local roads meet this road. The climate in Preveza is Mediterranean.
In ancient times, the area of Igoumenitsa was part of the area of ancient Greece, but outside the main historical trends. In later eras comes the rule of the Romans in the 2nd century BC. n. e. At that time, the city was known as Nikopolj. The Battle of Actia is known from this period, in which Octavian Augustus finally defeated Mark Antony and Cleopatra. After that comes the rule of the Byzantines and finally the Ottoman Turks. In 1538, the battle of Preveza took place here, between Turks and Christian countries under the leadership of the Pope. The city became part of modern Greece again only in 1913. The Second World War hit the city hard, because the city was on the front line for the first half of the war. The prefecture was modernized in the past decades.
Today, Preveza has about 20,000 inhabitants in the city and its surroundings. The population is mostly ethnic Greeks. Preveza has always been a developed coastal center, and it still is today (seafaring, fishing, maritime tourism).
