I once read that when Brooke Stevens couldn't sell enough 360's in the U.S. he took the bodies off many of them and rented them out as gocarts at special tracks. The view behind the driver's seat of this 360 on the freeway evokes just how small these cars are. Kudos for the successful trip. You are braver than I.

COOL! I was longing for this video! Brings back indelible memories of the sounds and feel of "The Star". My Dad was basically the First Subaru dealer in Oregon, and Bought about 25 Subaru 360/Stars in Salem from Malcolm Bricklin for $300 each just before they were Banned by DOT. If this car was sold originally in Oregon, my Dad likely sold it new! When I was 14', dad gave me a 360 that had done a 360 roll and was a bit bashed on the sides and top. I basically learned to in the Subaru 360 and a 1915 Model T. Truly one of the of the most fun and exhilarating cars you can drive and both the 360 and the Model-T are the best cars to learn to drive in.
I converted your fuel price to euros and it was 1, 15 e/ litre. Here in Finland it is now 1,98 e / litre - so multiply that with 3,8 litres ( your gallon, fathom, barley grain .. whatever.. ) . We pay 8,24 dollars / gallon for fuel. Plus a yearly tax, that's defined by your vehicles CO2 emissions. My 1998 VW Golf costs about 280 euros a year in CO2 tax, that is to be paid for the pleasure of owning a vehicle, not driving even a meter. Yay!
Out taxes are paid when you get license plate and in my state it goes by weight, I recently paid 900 dollars a piece for 2 tags legal for 26,000 lbs one on a pickup one on a dump truck , I drive both vehicles less than 500 miles a year 😢
Im into cars and motorcycles ATV all sorts of mechanical things but I have no idea how YT knew to push this video to me. This is hilarious and its so charming lol. The noise it makes going highway speed is adorable!
I used to own a Subaru 360 a long time ago. I had a lot of fun with it. Was orange with black headlight surrounds so it looked a little like a bumblebee. Sounded like it, too. Rain on the highway would slow me down. Had a custom header exhaust system made for it after the stock exhaust fell off. It is said they were the most dangerous car ever imported into the USA. Could pull off the doors and remove the plastic roof and it was a cool dune buggy like rig. Could pick up the front end and turn it around if I got stuck. Didn't notice your spare tire.
What a cool, eclectic mix of cars; Japanese, European and US - from supercars to older but obscure family cars! - would have loved to get my hands on that Lotus Europa or the RX7, and absolutely love your Subaru - thanks for sharing!
I had a '69 Subaru 360 pickup truck for a few years as my daily driver (we were SO poor back then).Loved it! Competed quite well with SoCal freeway traffic, but there were a few times on really hot days that the 2 stroke overheated and ran away with itself - scary! The only way to stop the engine in that condition is to put in in gear and let the clutch out suddenly. Then wait for an hour for the engine to cool off. This brings back memories. If I had a chance to get a good deal on a van, I would do it in a second. Joe Serrano, if you're watching this, thanks for all the help!
I've had a horrible day today but this video lightened it up. I never even knew Subaru made little two stroke cars, and yours is so cool. I hope you still run that car today, it's a very unique vehicle.
I really do enjoy this channel immensely. Great car content, and great dog content! This was my favourite kind of video; a small, eclectic car show, then a road trip. Excellent stuff! 😊
Keep an eye on the 2 tiny bolts holding the inner u-joints at the transmission. They have a nasty tendency to loosen up. Safety wire is advised. Too cool, I haven’t seen a 360 in50 years.
Just discovered your channel. The 69 Suburu a interesting car & sure gives you a great ride. I restored a 2 door 57 Nash some years ago. It sat 5 people. Had always wanted one & was a pure pleasure to restore & drive. I kept it for 2 years & had a new assignment so needed to sell. Went to a good owner & hope today they are still driving it. Enjoy your channel. Your clear on the other side of the country. You have a great ride along Stella. Pups🐶are unconditional loven💕always. Safe🛣Travels. always, Tommy🤠
That Subaru looks alas frightening as driving an old 1960's VW Beetle LOL But it looks like a load of fun too. Back in the day we had to DRIVE the car, not the other way around lol That's why we have so many accidents today, cars have too many luxury appointments & driver's got lazy & unattentively at the wheel. Thanks for the Drive I loved it :) Now I need a drink to sooth my nerves LOL
The sound of this Subaru is pretty much the same as the 1968( l think)Suzuki Front'e l used to own in Wanganui new Zealand. It had a 360cc 3 cylinder water cooled two stroke motor, rear mounted rear wheel drive. Fun little Kei car, nippy, and would hold 100kph/ 60 mph all day on the open road, it had four doors even though it was tiny. Thank you for your very light hearted and interesting video!
That was a neat lil car show, love the wild variety of everything, but for me it was the Brat and that blue Lotus Europa (exceedingly rare little things).

I've got to hand it to you, you've got guts. I ridden in one of these years ago and doing 50 mph in windy conditions was the scariest ride I've ever been on. Between engine whine and my friend constantly having to make steering corrections, I surprised we survived.
I knew a man named Grizzard that had one of those. Gave me a ride home from work one night. Nobody else on the road. It was so small and the little engine screaming created this illusion of speed. I didn't ask to drive it but I think Grizzard was having a blast scaring me with it because it felt like we were flying. I would buy one if the price was right.
Great tour, I like every minute of it! I grow up in Yugoslavia. Back in 60' the most popular was Z750, everyone has to have one. Rear drive, engine on the back and ebony steering wheel and shifter knob. Than it come Yugo and everybody look at Z750 as a poor family car... all that, Z750 just to be rediscovered these days and brought to brilliance, garaged in tempered temperature and humidity.... people...
Lovely Stella. You got a brilliant sticker back there! ahah "not allowed to pump your own gas"? Damn that engine sounds so peppy and lively, and so round all along, must be among the best 2 stroke engines ive heard
I saw one of these Subaru coupes, and also the "town delivery van" model, in Washington DC in 1972. The van was about the size of a shipping box for a refrigerator, maybe all of 9 feet long.
When I was a kid all people drives 2 stroke vehicles. Wartburg, MZ, Java, CZ Trabant, IFA, Honda, Subaru etc. Even a decent amount of trucks was 2 stroke diesel.
Owned a yellow one when they were new. Great city car, terrible on the hwy. Had to shut off gas in engine bay when you parked car, otherwise the carb would fill with gas. Thanks for the vid. BTW I test drove a new Yugo years later. It was like a Rolls Royce when compared to the little 360 sedan :)
Gas gauge didn't move much. Probably gets at least 45 - 50 mpg or better. Kinda scary though thinking what would happen in an accident. I had a '67 Mk1 Austin Cooper s back in 1974. Unlike the Subaru 360, the engine was in the front with the Cooper. Even though, being so small and light, I had concerns about surviving a wreck in it. Lots of fun, but got rid of it for fear of dying in it. (Weber 4-pack, cam, ported/polished, Alexander headers/exhaust, rally gearbox, WIDE Dunlop gold seal tires and Koni gas shocks. VERY fast.) Basically a high powered go-kart with a body!
when I was a kid loads of cars had hose travelcators in the door pillars, often would see a guy who lived a few doors away drive off and lean out the window as he had to push it back in as it used to stick. happy times when the roads were empty,
Cool car. Very rare indeed! Looks (and more importantly sounds) like it should have a wind up key sticking out of the back! Keep her on the road for all to see.
I had one. Never took it more than a few miles. I said it before, somewhere I have a pic of a young me picking up the front end 😮 NJ and Oregon 😂 All my life. Never ever talk of the fi. Subaru 360 club lol. So glad it worked. I haven’t had a show worthy car in years. I got one I need to get going. Some of those cars , like the Pagoda. Wow . Thanks
We had a DKW growing up that was a 3 cylinder two cyle engine. Took it to Nebraska and back in the early 60s. In those days, every gas station wanted to check our oil.
Little cars can be a blast to drive , 😊so much fun . Once had a 1970 850 Fiat Spider , loved it ❤ right up till I hit a pothole full of water in the rain and flipped it .😢
You guys are lucky. Just went past a petrol station (UK) and it's £1.50 per litre which is £6.80 per imperial gallon. That translates to $8.70 per imperial gallon.
i remember you have a Mitusbishi 2.0 liter turbo powered 360 sitting under covers waiting to be finished. last i saw you were working on the steering but the chassy looked compete.
that's cool that it has an OD .... seems like another ..... is that the tallest tire that will fit? are there any suspension mods that would make it handle better?
Yes, it was modeled on the 1956 Ford Cab-over which was made until 1992. Many fire engines used that as their tractor, which is why Tonka loved it. They were big on fire engines.
I briefly had an Eagle Summit except it was badged as a Colt Vista. It was hilariously huge and comfortable inside, while being about the length and width of a Honda Civic.
One of the guys on my South Texas Naval Air Station brought one of these back from Japan in 1969. We carried it up three flights of stairs and parked it on the roof of the barracks.
These little things give the most fun for the pound of dry weight. And for those who say that it's not safe, first rule of safety is awareness of the driver. You don't see a lot of accidents with vintage or collection vehicles in them... For a reason.
Taller final drive and still about twice the RPM for the speed as a typical car. And that video was more fun than I could have imagined, plus a couple perfectly timed shots (like the trafficator).
The Lotus was a Europa. Linda Thorson had one in the Avengers and Charles Grodin drove one in '11 Harrowhouse'. They originally had a Renault transaxle and engine but I think could be had with the Lotus twin cam too.
The scariest part about driving a slowish car on the highway is when you have to exit on the left-hand side. There are lots of left-hand exits in my part of the country.
Meanwhile here in the UK fuel is £5.50p a gallon thats around $6 bucks a gallon total piss take as we say here in the UK as petrol here was only £4 a gallon in 2020 so its going up way too fast but no way in hell i will every drive an Electric car , they wont force me into one , they are boring , anyway great to see the Dog enjoys the little Subaru too
Back in College in 1969 I was driving a 1959 Oldsmobile, traded it in for a 1969 360. Major driving experience change. When I took the 360 in for service they loaned me a Mercury Cougar it felt like I was driving the Olds again.
That Triumph Spitfire! I really wanted a Spitfire, but they were too expensive, and my parents weren't eager to have their teenage son driving around in something that invited driving too fast. I got a used '65 VW sedan, which I drove too fast, anyway, and wound up hanging by my seat belt in a canyon. My brother had a Brat, but he took out the back seats so that, with a bit of a plywood floor extension and a shell, he could go on trips and sleep in the back. That Lotus is a Europa, such a weird looking thing. Renault engine, unless it was a Twin Cam, which was Lotus-Ford. I always felt they should have done something to lower the back end, like slanting the engine way over. If I couldn't afford a Spit, I couldn't get anywhere close to a Europa. Besides, the cockpit was way too small. The VW convertible is a SuperBeetle. I had a red (Clementine, they called the color) '71 convertible, which I got new. I drove it a lot more gently, having learned my lesson with the '65. This one is newer, I can see from the glimpse of taillight. Cars painted that gold were a special-edition, called The Gold Bug. The SuperBeetle had a more modern suspention than the '65 at both ends, but the chassis flexed terribly. Still, I kept it until 1985. My Dad had a VW, '55, I think it was, which had semaphore type turn signals, though VW had disconnected them in favor of blinkers. He then got a Morris Minor 1000, '58, I think, which had working semaphores. I thought they were SOOO NEAT. He didn't keep it long as, every time he drove through a puddle, the engine would conk out, a strange failing for a car that comes from a place as wet as Britain. He eventually fixed the problem, but he never really liked the car, so the next year he got a '59 VW, which didn't have semaphores, working or not. He kept that one till he got a '65 VW bus, set up as a camper. Sure about that speed? Cheap speedos tend to be very optimistic.
At 16:18, it reminds me of a road that my father would drive on, which isn't too far from where I am. Even though Weathersfield has a stretch similar to that.
Love it! I love that two stroke roar! It sounds like you’re going 100mph and so much more fun than driving a powerful car slow

Will do ! Thank you.
I KNEW IT WAS A SUBARU 360 from the thumbnail, LETS GO!!! omg those things are kinda rare!
This is such an awesome video! Thanks for taking us on the ride!
I also have 3 DKW cars, see my DKW driving videos , you'll love them.
Just 4 years ago our price was half what he paid.
@@mesckolet’s go Brandon!
The Lotus was a Europa, and I think they have a Renault engine
Indeed a Lotus Lotus Europa . Running gear is of a Renault 16😊
i remember you have a Mitusbishi 2.0 liter turbo powered 360 sitting under covers waiting to be finished. last i saw you were working on the steering but the chassy looked compete.
that's cool that it has an OD .... seems like another ..... is that the tallest tire that will fit?
are there any suspension mods that would make it handle better?
Great vid. Nice assortment at the car show, and the little car performed perfectly !
Thanks!
I like your fuel prices. In Holland nowadays you pay 2,00/liter...is about 5 US dollar per gallon
That Ford looks like a Tonka/Ertl Semi that did laps around my sandbox when I was a little fella.
Wow !
@@2stroketurbo The Navy never said a word. They just rolled out one of the big aircraft recovery cranes and lowered the car down unharmed.
Gorgeos car ! My father have a Saab 93 2 stroke years ago !
These little things give the most fun for the pound of dry weight. And for those who say that it's not safe, first rule of safety is awareness of the driver. You don't see a lot of accidents with vintage or collection vehicles in them... For a reason.
It's so great seeing you drive around what is also my town! Hope to see you on the road one day in one of your little cars.
I hope so too!
Taller final drive and still about twice the RPM for the speed as a typical car. And that video was more fun than I could have imagined, plus a couple perfectly timed shots (like the trafficator).
スバル360の輸出左ハンドル仕様ですね。ボンネットのアバルトスコーピオンがかっこいい!大切に乗っていただいて日本人として本当にありがたいです。
The Lotus was a Europa. Linda Thorson had one in the Avengers and Charles Grodin drove one in '11 Harrowhouse'. They originally had a Renault transaxle and engine but I think could be had with the Lotus twin cam too.
The scariest part about driving a slowish car on the highway is when you have to exit on the left-hand side. There are lots of left-hand exits in my part of the country.
Meanwhile here in the UK fuel is £5.50p a gallon thats around $6 bucks a gallon total piss take as we say here in the UK as petrol here was only £4 a gallon in 2020 so its going up way too fast but no way in hell i will every drive an Electric car , they wont force me into one , they are boring , anyway great to see the Dog enjoys the little Subaru too
That little car is great I luv it
Back in College in 1969 I was driving a 1959 Oldsmobile, traded it in for a 1969 360.
The Subaru, a Japanese Fiat 500.. We had one in South Africa around 1977, drove well, no issues.
When I drove large two stroke motorcycles (Suzuki 500) I used synthetic in the oil injection. Do you? What is the temperature gauge registering?
I own a 1980 Sachs 505 1-D g=3 2 cycle moped which gets 120-125 mpg on the open road at 35-40 mph, one fun way of getting around.
😍😍😍 Very nice designed, beautiful! When I saw first the Scorpio I thought about Abarth, but not , japonese Subaro. Very nice! My dad had a GoGoMobil
As the owner of a 93 Suzuki Cappuccino, driving Kei cars can be an absolute hoot.
Fun! I drove a 2-cycle (zweitakt) Trabant 240km each way from Chicago to Wisconsin Dells.... two different times.
At 16:18, it reminds me of a road that my father would drive on, which isn't too far from where I am. Even though Weathersfield has a stretch similar to that.
