Salchipapas: Peruvian Fast Food in Lima, Peru

  • When it comes to original Peruvian fast food / Peruvian junk food you absolutely have to try salchipapas or choripapas. Originating from the streets of Lima, Salchipapa literally means sausage (salchicha) and potato (papa). The dish is basically thinly sliced sausages and french fries with additional toppings such as cheese and egg and dipping sauces that include aji and ketchup. Choripapas is exactly the same aside from the fact chorizo is swapped for the salchicha. We had ours at Sanguchisimo in Miraflores, Lima, Peru.

    Salchipapas: Peruvian Fast Food in Lima, Peru Travel Video Transcript:
    #eatPERU
    So for today's video we are at a place called Sanguchisimo and we're going to be eating salchipapas by popular demand. We had all of these people being like if you're in Lima you have to eat salchipapa. So we listened to you, we tracked down this place and we're excited to be trying this dish. We've actually ordered two variations of it. We're having salchipapa, which is french fries with hot dogs and we're also having choripapas, which is sausage with hot dogs. And we got both portions fully loaded with cheese and fried eggs.
    So I also got myself a drink. This is a fresh fruit smoothie, it is strawberry, orange and pineapple.
    So our choripapas and salchipapas have arrived. We've got the sausage one and the hot dog one. Look at those portions. That is a thing of beauty. And this is a street food snack that originated in the streets of Lima. But now it has spread all over Latin America so you can find it in other countries which is pretty cool. Different variations everywhere. And it comes with four different sausages that we've got here on this plate. We've got ketchup, mayo, mustard and of course aji. I think the aji is my favorite one. Yes, mine too. So we may need to ask for an extra container. And this is like a really nice spicy sauce that you'll find almost everywhere in Peru.
    So on top here we have. Look at all of that cheese! Yeah, that is a lot of cheese and some fried egg as well. And when we were placing our order they asked us do you want your egg like well fried or do you want it a little bit runny. And there is nothing that grosses out Sam more than runny eggs.
    A little messy. Wow. That is good. Give me one minute. This is wonderful. If I were a kid I feel like I would want to eat this everyday. I would be like Mom, please salchipapa for lunch.
    But look at that. Yeah, it has got a lot of ingredients that kids would love. Yeah. You've got your french fries, you've got your cheese, you've got your eggs, you've got your hot dog, you've got your nice sauces. It is wonderful. And I have to say the aji at this restaurant is actually really spicy. It is the spiciest which I've had.
    I'm very happy with mine. So it is now Sam's turn. And he's having the choripapa which has chorizo. So this is actually just literally identical to the one you're having except that you can see right here instead of the hot dog we've got the little slices of chorizo. So I'm going to do the same as you, I'm going to get some egg, I'm going to get some cheese, I'm going to get some fries. It is already spilling over.
    So let's do the aji and a little bit of ketchup. Oh, I tainted it. Tainted the sauce. Tainted sauce.
    That is really really tasty. It is like I'm definitely prefer chorizo to hot dog so this one is specifically tailored for me. I love chorizo so this is really tasty and just the fries are done to perfection. Then you add the egg and cheese and those two different sauces.
    Okay, so this is what is leftover. I couldn't finish my fries. Sam did pretty well. Damage control. Yeah, as I promised I took care of mine. I'm not going to overeat and eat Audrey's too but you know what I did a good job over here.
    Okay, and let's talk about the price for each of these. So these were 18 Soles. So you're looking roughly at five US dollars. Not bad value, you're going to leave feeling stuffed if you finish the whole thing like I did. This is a meal in and of itself. Absolutely. Try it if you're in Peru - especially Lima.
    This is part of our Travel in Peru video series showcasing Peruvian food, Peruvian culture and Peruvian cuisine.

    I rememeber while in peru when i was 15 years young, my favorite salchipapa/salchipollo came from the people who would stand on the corner w their carrito sanguchero. It was made to order always and so delicious. They added aji n a little mayo and crispy lettuce on top sooooo good and that was for lunch and dinner time. Earlier in the day (morning time) the same people would sell papa rellena with ceviche on the side and that was just a perfect combo. The ceviche juice all over the papa. Mmmmm mmmm. And it was only 2 soles or less. Great memories. My pops just came back from peru and he said that my favorite salchipapero is still there serving my favorite. Im 29 now lol. Crazy but awesome.

    Finally a salchipapas video! :) looks really good in Sanguchisimo! But next time you have to try the salchipapas of República, for me it's still the best salchipapas I've ever tried. Three different sausages, fried egg and fries fried with skin. And the portion's big enough to share. Next time you come to Lima you definitely have to go there :)

      I am not talking about prices and off course I dont eat the service (besides you tip for the service), place (doors, tables, chairs, etc) or anything like that and this is not fine cousine or 5 stars restaurant to pay for the service, place, etc, and . BTW I guess the place where I eat is not "normal" must be outstanding though

    Looks good, but this salchipapa is made with precooked potatos wich you can find in any other place in the world, the real and authentic peruvian salchipapa is made with natural fried potato wich gives this dish a very different flavor and is much better and usually is served with a lettuce salad and mayonese home made. Salchipapa and Pollo a la brasa are most commun dish in all Peru. You should try Pollo a la Brasa!

      Sarita Consuelo G. Maza Me refiero a que un turista no puede comer cualquier cosa porque cada población está "acostumbrada" a la fauna de microorganismos que están en nuestra comida.
      Ejm: Si nosotros tomamos agua del caño, no pasa nada; pero si un turista lo hace se va a enfermar pero muy mal. Eso ocurre cuando nosotros viajamos a otros países también, ¿captas la idea?

    I'm peruvian, you ate a "gourmet" salchipapa lol too small and maybe you could get half the price by searching more. There is a lot of 'hidden' places to eat with a special and particular taste/presentation/cost for everyone that we peruvians call 'huarique' because you can't die by hunger in Perú.

    • @DarkenSlayer
      @DarkenSlayer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Before I forget, there's a thousand of dishes to try. I'll recommend you to eat ASAP this dish "Chancho al palo" or "Chancho a la caja china", you will vow and worship that dish.

    • @samuelandaudrey
      @samuelandaudrey  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, you're probably right. We didn't know where else to find a salchipapa, so we decided to try them at this place. That being said, we also bought salchipapas on the side of the road in Bolivia. Those were much cheaper, but just as tasty. ;)
