    Great video Tony! Lots of blocking! I been using poly primer over epoxy on my latest bare metal 86 mustang restomod project. No shrink and have yet to burn through except for some edges. I stopped using Upol Dolphin Glaze when I found out it takes two dolphins, ground up, to make one 440ml tube! That dolphin cartilage sure sands and feathers nice though. Keep up the great work.

    Very good video showing folk just how much work it takes to get things right, far to many folk have no idea what it takes to get things right. Just a wee observation though, you didn't wear a mask when you were blocking the van(maybe just on the camera shots?)maybe a good idea to let folk know that they should wear a mask when sanding etc.

      @@TonysRefinishingTV I know what it's like, been at the painting for 40years now and seen quite a few guys having to stop working because of breathing problems, everybody thinks it'll be ok until it's not(we've all done it)if you have a look at a mask before and after you've been sanding you'll see what was going into your lungs(not trying to tell you how to suck eggs or anything)

    Hey Tony, another good video. Yes, I have seen dozens of these vans that people have spent big bucks on having restored, and they look great till you look down the sides and they are like a ploughed field. I think that the bodywork guys just get so fed up with the job that they stop the prep. about 2 days early. Did you not fancy an air file for the initial block out of the side panel?

    • @TonysRefinishingTV
      @TonysRefinishingTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No mate never really use an air file tbh I don’t think you can beat doing it by hand although it’s hard work

  • @JohnWD40TC02
    @JohnWD40TC02 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video Tony very interesting and it goes to show just how much work is involved when doing a restoration like this, I think you said you spent 12 hours plus just blocking and getting the panels straight and you still haven't got to the primer stage, it's those people with the stupid questions that need to see these type of vids as it would save you a lot of crayons 😂 they think you can get a job like this done in a couple of days then complain about the time taken and the amount of labour charges, anyway mate a great and informative vid, look forward to the next one 👍

    • @TonysRefinishingTV

    Tony is it normally permissible to fill over the low guide coat area’s such as you appeared to do on the rear end ?
    I just thought as the guide coat appears to be a dust it could compromise adhesion 🤔

    • @TonysRefinishingTV

      I wipe the areas over before applying filler mate I’ve never had any issues

  • @darrengroves9
    @darrengroves9 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    There's often a lot of discussion about whether you should apply filler direct to metal or on top of epoxy. I have done both depending on the job I'm doing, but was interested to see that you applied filler even over old paint and old primer that had broken through after the initial blocking. Is that OK to do? Another great video BTW, I always enjoy what you do... 👍

    • @TonysRefinishingTV
      @TonysRefinishingTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes its fine mate i prefer not to aplly filler over bare metal as the fresh metal oxidises to fast so on a job like this it would be rusty before we had finished filler work

    • @TonysRefinishingTV

    Eat the frog first. My Cadillac friend said start at one corner and work that and when that is done, move to next section, clockwise or CCW, pick one direction...that is how he did his cadillacs 1949 through 1972. He said you take it all apart, ti's just too big of a job, lose parts, and interest. It does not get done. For the vanagon, I started in Front Passenger door in a clockwise direction. Yet, the instructor accused me of being a scatterbrain and jumping all around the vanagon (T25),. Instructor said, make a list and focus on getting things done so you can look at the list and actually know you made progress. When I had my 55 coupe de ville, it was take a part off and restore that before taking anything else off.... My other friend said, do one thing a day for your project. From Mike FN, I learned sandpaper - light touch, and it it wears out, toss it, good sandpaper is worth it....Mike has done amazing rust work, not concours, but projects get done and are driveable.
