Shaping a Larch Bonsai

- This video was taken during one of our General Bonsai Workshops. Paul brought his Larch in as he wasn't sure what to do next. See how I decided to shape this tree.

I'm marathoning all of your larch videos! I dug out two nice specimens from my parents' garden. They were forgotten on a big pile of sandy turfus soil so in 10 years didn't grow much and most of the growth died off which made them sad regular trees but great bonsai material!

Partly reshaping a tree someone grew for 25 years requires some determination, well done!
If it were my own tree, I would change even more. The two back branches appear to be about right at the same height of the tree. The two following front facing branches also. To me it looks odd / artificial. I would take off the second branch from the bottom (the bottom right back branch). And turn the front facing left (from the viewers perspective) towards the front (close to a 90 degree angle), so it partly hides the trunk and it's connection to the trunk. Also, it would look less like two arms. The downside is that it looks empty, less populated with brances.

For me eventually that left branch needs to come off, as the both left and right hand branches come from the same point (crucifix look). There is another branch that can be trained right to create balance. As he said, don't be afraid to prune - but it all cant be done at the same time unless your willing to wait.

How easy/difficult is it to take cuttings from larch ? I pruned mine recently and stuck a few pieces into some soil and the buds on these pieces seem to be carrying on as normal.
It’s normal for pruned sticks to go on budding if they are kept moist. It doesn’t mean that they will root though. However, there’s no harm in trying. Good luck.👍

It's called a beebielata. My uncle has one :)
Peter calls it Jin Plier, however it looks like a pot handler (Sansi: a pincer tool).

To me, unfortunately not a great result for this tree that has so much potential. The branches remaining after this work are so straight and long and yet they are bursting with new buds. I really think you've missed an opportunity to radically prune the branches even more and start them again from the new buds and to use a 'clip and grow' process rather than the half-hearted bending with wire that you've done here. Also the lowest left branch (on the new front) and the branch directly behind it now appear to be crossing (see at 8:37 and at 9:38) yet that was not even mentioned. The (now) rear branch could be bent downwards to remedy this quite easily. Sorry, but not a good piece of work IMHO - more care and attention needed. Such a beautiful tree (i mean, wow, what a nice trunk line - well done to Paul, the owner) deserves more than it was given here.
I agree ... it cold me more compact ... i cant see any balance or direction on which way its going .. 1 of the 2 primary branches need shortening or jining ....
Also bend the top of the trunk over ... its to straight & without movement ....
@@markt5623 Yes Mark - agree with that and your other comment also. The more I look at it, the more things seem obvious - the right hand branches also look to be crossing each other as well as those on the left. It's a seriously nice piece of material but really needs a bold approach to bring it forward to its obvious potential.
actually ive changed my mind ...id cut the top of the tree off .. & bend the branch on the right in a spiral upwards & over to give it interest & balance ...
Hmm, without doubt there are many possibilities for this tree. Judging by the comments from the owner and audience, during the relatively minor pruning that Peter undertook, the owners appetite for serious reshaping may be limited and quite understandably. Peter has to exercise restraint on someone elses 25 yo tree and took a "safe option" perhaps. If I inherited the tree, I'd be tempted to do something radical, but with 25 years invested by the owner I can understand any reluctance.
