    Thanks so much for this! After many repeated viewings, I was able to complete a very nice corner built-in using your design. It looks great and most importantly, my wife loves it!!

    Wonderful looking built ins. You done a great job explaining everything. I will attempt my hand at this in about a month. I am calling for final inspection on my room addition soon so this is a perfect intro for me to try my hand at a bookcase. Thank you.

    Hey, thanks for this. I got a couple good ideas from you, particular the corner vertical spacers. I'm going to make mine out of a 1x4 with chamfered edges for even more support.

    Great video! Thank you! I'm wondering if it would be possible to use solid pine board instead of plywood (assuming cost was not an issue). I know that a lot of times solid would isn't perfectly straight so I'm wondering if that is something that is possible to work around or if it isn't worth the hassle.

    • @HandCraftedbyJasonCooper

      You absolutely could use solid pine boards for this. But you are right, standard pine in particular is often cupped, bowed, or otherwise not really straight and flat. You would likely want to find "select" or better boards (no knots, S4S). Lumber prices right now are high and select pine might be as expensive as something like poplar. Plywood prices are high right now too, but still might be cheaper than solid wood. But either would work.

      My only recommendation would be to join two boards together for your shelf. Every time I use a full-width pine board it warps. Ive been using two boards and opposing the grains to make the width of board I need..

    • @HandCraftedbyJasonCooper
      @HandCraftedbyJasonCooper  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately I don't really have "plans". I sketch these things out with Key measurements and then build from their. The biggest things is figuring out your measurement, shelf spacing, how you will support the shelves, and your trim details.

    Hi, Jason. I really liked your video. Thank you for posting it. In order to save money, we are thinking of tackling a couple corner bookshelves and a few regular bookshelves for my craft room. We have no experience and have limited tools. What would be a good pneumatic nailer to use for the units we want to build? What would be a good type of electric “hand” saw to cut the pieces with? We want to use boards we see online at Lowes - Blue Hawk 15.75-in W x 96-in D White Thermally Fuse Laminate Wood Closet Shelf. I want to utilize every square inch possible from floor to ceiling. I want to make the height of the shelves vary. I want to be able to put cubby bins in square holes and have square holes with shelves in them to put my card stock sheets and tablets in. I want to have the shelves similar to a “Dreambox”, which wastes a lot of space for my purposes. I am feeling a little overwhelmed and scared of possibly screwing up the pieces and thus wasting our limited funds. I was going to try to see if I could get a friend to draw up some plans (that we can hopefully follow). Any suggestions for tools and construction would be most appreciated. Thank you. Pam

      @HandCraftedbyJasonCooper  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I personally use a Bostitch 18 gauge brad nailer (like this: amzn.to/3EUeZFl). As far as a circular saw, just buy a recognizable brand…don’t just buy the cheapest. If you need the shelves to hold much weight, you might want to use a different material for the shelves, OR use plenty of support. Particle board and laminated materials (other than plywood) will sag with much weight. Otherwise, just watch several different videos of people building shelves and pick up useful tips from each of them. Good luck!

    Exactly what I need, including the 9' size. Wondering if the corner spacer is enough to hold lots of books though. Are there any weight concerns with this method? Thanks for the video!

    • @HandCraftedbyJasonCooper
      @HandCraftedbyJasonCooper  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you like the video! We actually fit a lot of books in this corner. If you have really heavy books or a lot of them, you might want to stiffen up the shelves a bit or also support the front edge of the shelf in the corner. I used a 1" x 3/4" strip on end along the front of each shelf. You could beef that up to 1.5 if you feel more support is necessary. There are actually some tools online that can do some basic calculations based on your dimensions, materials, and expected load to see if you are building it strong enough. This is one i've used and seen others recommend. woodbin.com/calcs/sagulator/

    How is the vertical side piece attached to the box? By screws?

    • @HandCraftedbyJasonCooper
      @HandCraftedbyJasonCooper  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. I used 1.25” screws from the inside so they were not visible in the finished product.

    Great design attention to detail! I'm curious since you used pretty nice plywood could you just router the edge of the shelves instead of all that work with trim since it all got painted?

    • @HandCraftedbyJasonCooper
      @HandCraftedbyJasonCooper  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could certainly rout the edges of plywood, however, you will still be able to see the layers even if painted. I wanted to cover the edge of the plywood, which is pretty common. I also wanted to strengthen the front edge of the shelf to prevent sagging overtime. The trim piece I applied was thicker than the plywood in order to accomplish this.

    What did you make the spacers for the shelves out of?

  • @gretchenguzman4300

    What is the depth of the shelves? This came out amazing and we are going to try this!

    • @HandCraftedbyJasonCooper
      @HandCraftedbyJasonCooper  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The shelves are 9" deep. But obviously you can vary that depending on the size of books you need to house. Shelves typically vary between 8 - 10 inches.

    How sturdy is this with using plywood?

    • @HandCraftedbyJasonCooper
      @HandCraftedbyJasonCooper  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plywood is very sturdy and has less expansion/contraction that solid wood. The shelves do need support/reinforcement if you will have much weight as this is a pretty long span.
