- After its initial valuation, Pete & Sam are confident they can get more for their huge Fire & Ice opal stone. Once cut and polished, they are pleasantly surprised when valued a second time the price is more than doubled, coming in at $120,000!

I'm so pleased for Pete, as his wish was for Sam to stay on opal mining. But I'm doubly pleased for Sam that he decided to stay, and also made enough to buy their house and settle down, and continue opal mining. I wish them all the best, and look forward to more of their finds.

@@Tina-mt9cl the cut/polish kinda ruins it. Probably used the Dremel to grind out a lot of sand spots. Opal looks better as a cabochon
@@chrisp2272 it actually increases there value so idk what your on about. If they had sold that rock as they found it, it would have sold for $10000-$20000 at most.
@@chrisp2272 cut it into a cabochon and you lose massive amounts of gorgeous looking opal severely reducing it's value

I saw this opal today in Vicky's shop at Lightning Ridge and let me tell you that no picture I have seen can do it justice. The colours are mesmerising and I couldn't stop looking at it. Unfortunately it is now sold, I believe, so it won't be on display for long. I did buy my daughter a beautiful set of green opal earings though that I know she will love at Christmas. The Down to Earth shop would sell some of the better opal jewellery in the Ridge.

Hate to break it to yall that dont know opal, if you look at 2:30 you can see the rough polishing marks on it. Most of this opal was planted for tv effect.

well yes they are selling it to sellers which means the people they are selling it too also has to make money on it
@@Dorfs you understand the concept of being lowed balled to the point where it's a rip off don't you? They take biggest risk financially and physically, do a vast majority of the work, and see the least amount of profit
They werent ripped off, they know how much this kind of opal is worth.
Top dollar would be around 20k, but they are looking for a quick buck.

Can someone that actually values opals please confirm whether these valuations are accurate and realistic? They just seem super high, like will the first 2 beautiful gems actually sell in a reasonable time frame for over $13k? It seems high, but I'm no expert haha
i think jewelers take the opals and make several pieces of jewelry from each one.

How does it work? I thought they sold the stones to them for $13k? I never seen this show
They mine the rough opals themselves and then sell them to a suitable buyer. The buyer of the opal would then cut and polish it, to bring it's value up in order to sell for a profit to a jeweller or collector.
