Just for anyone with sony wf 1000 xm4 to take a reference. I am a HongKonger and own a pair of sony wf1000xm4 which is out of warranty. Previously, I experienced the same uneven battery draining issue. My right earbud can go from 100% to 0% in less than 20 mins while my left earbud still have over 80%. This severely affects my user experience. I went to the sony local store and they replaced the earbuds (but not the case) for me after 1 week for free. For anyone having the same issue, I highly recommend that you go for replacement as soon as possible. However, after replacement/software update to 2.0.0, I feel that the ANC is worse than before. This is something that I think we all should be aware of, maybe sony is trying to make their xm4 worse so that they can get more sells with their comijg xm5? Idk. The left earbud would die extremely fast. I put them in the drawer and haven't used them since. Recently the new update released so I had hope it would be fixed. The xm4s came out about 2-3 years ago, it may be that the batteries are finished in the buds. I have an issue where my earbuds say they are charged but they last only a few minutes. I hate the way the fit so I kinda gave up on them and didn’t bother following up with Sony.
@@ainajoe5874 I feel the same. I bought 3; 4; and 5. The 5 will be my last Sony. Sony, you better say sorry and make good on this. Otherwise, all must stop buying Sony. Period.
Sony is not ready to take these buds back and yes the problem still persist - Thank you for bringing it up to the world ... Though these were one of the favorite's but unfortunately cannot use them anymore as battery drains completely in just 20 mins. Sadly, nothing can be done as the warranty period is over.
Hi sir thanks for this vdo My XM4 left earbuds battery draining in 5 minutes after I tried to pushed software update to earbuds. Buds did not get updated though. After 49% update push failed. Kindly advice wat should I do. Thanks!
Mine had a 19% difference but the 2.0 update means one buds status reads 100% always. When it dies my other bud still reads around 20% but now it cuts off too unlike before when it would stay working solo until it ran out of battery. I can't even reconnect the bud that still reads 20% on its own any more. Crazy crap! My second pair are working fine after the 2.0 update.
Hi, thanks for your videos. I have a question. I bought mine about 2 weeks ago and they came with Firmware version 1.4.2. So far I have had no problems but I am in doubt if I should leave them on that version or if I should update them to version 2.0.0. I ask because I have read a lot about these battery problems and what many say is that they started to damage the battery after upgrading to version 1.4.2 so I do not know if my case is different considering that they already came with that version from the factory and is not the result of an update. And also because I see that many say that after upgrading to version 2.0.0 they started having problems. I really appreciate if you can help me since I don't know what to do, I'm undecided.
Bro, Could you please highlight swivel hinge breaking issue for WH-1000XM4 Sony headphones as well? Its really bad to see that Sony used poor material and its breaking, multiple users have reported the same issue for the right hand side cup and it is also observed that its there from XM2/3 series😢
I bought these back in 2022 and since late last year 2023, I too have been noticing battery problems with mine. The right bud also drains quicker than the the left one. I really find this a shame because I really like using my XM4's.😔
Whenever I am on a call the earphones go into weird ambient mode and I can literally hear no media vol. Which makes these basically useless for gaming is this issue only with my pair? I got them in oct last year should I ask for a replacement?
Mine had an extreme drain battery issue in the left earbud. Usually, the left one lasts less than an hour and the right gets about two to three hours. Sony really FIU with these one.
I bought this in year 2022 but last year warranty was over😢 and then after that problem starts. I have not even used these buds for more than 100 times but still facing battery draining issue is there any chance service center will replace these batteries FOC?
Hey i have issues when I am on a video call for some reason there is ringing noise from the left ear but when it's kept separate i.e. one in the ear and another little further it doesn't ring
What about the buds not charging? The case shows 100 percent charge through the app., the buds still work but there seems to be no connection between the case and dubs. The case doesn't light up when the I put the bids in and they play when they are in the case. Contacts are clean. I have to manually turn them off in the app. Ive tried initializationand reset but it doeasnt work.. I've tried reaching out to Sony but they are out of warranty.
I had the issue, luckily I was 1month away before warranty expire. My issue was uneven battery drain. Got replacement and working fine on latest firmware.
Great content, glad you addressed. I give Sony credit though. I contacted them, and after some customer service trying to fix, they said return and we’ll send you new ones. It took about 10 days, but they sent me a new pair! And I’m talking about my pair was bought June ‘21 and they still replaced. Big props to Sony. Big props for your video addressing this issue.
What i have read on reddit is that people who bought before 2022 had suffered the longest time with that firmware. I bought it 6 months ago i don't remember being on 1.4.2 update but as of now i don't see the battery drain.
I've experienced this problem with the WF 1000 XM4 and I've had a chat with Sony Customer Support on multiple occasions. It seems that this is an issue with the earlier models, I got mine on release so that checks out. The problems the firmware brought are out of this world. On top of the uneven battery drain, overheating while charging, my Sony developed a master slave connection, even with Voice Assistant off. The left earbud would not work without the right earbud. I eventually got my refund from the store i bought it, not from Sony. So I can't say much about Sony's refund policy.
My right bud drained quickly. At the end when it died, the left one had 28% juice left. IMMEDIATELY exchanged it at best buy and it had the same issue. Then I called Sony and they agreed to replace it. But the replacement would take some time so I said to them that I'll take the replacement a few months down the line. After 6 ish months the batteries were kinda worn out and the issue was a lot bigger and I had to take the replacement. The new ones are a bit better balanced but the problem is still there
I had the issue myself, one of the buds got warm while in its case, drained the case, and died within less than an hour IIRC. I got them replaced under warranty, and recently my replacement unit started having shorter than expected battery life in the right bud (about 3 hrs). Just replaced its battery and I'm waiting for the adhesive to cure before testing it.
Bro i don't know why, every time I take out the buds I can't use the touch controls and I have to press them for 2 seconds and then it will say the battery details and from then I can use the touch controls and it happens every time. But they do connect and gives the sound. So please check on these
If I'm getting the XM4 for the first time, am I able to disable/prevent any updates so that I stay away from Update 1.4.2? I'd be fine with just stock settings with 0 updates
Anyone know what i can do with my xm4's? I cant find a receipt or transactions due to changing banks, but my xm4's had really bad draining battery issues and now one of the buds doesnt even charge/turn on. What can I do except for be mad at sony and change brands?
You guys are amazing and this is not against you, but Sony. I am from India and I had a similar issue. I had got them in Feb of 2022 for 243 USD and the issues started creeping up after few months of usage. Everything was going amazingly well untill it didn't. Initially, I thought my case had an issue. Then, I realised that the left earbud was draining faster. I took it to the service centre, they said that they will be replacing the earbud with the issue as it was under the warranty but not the whole thing. I was ok with it. Those guys, replaced the one which didn't have any issue and gave it back to me. I had to again take it back to them and explain everthing and then got the left one replaced. So, my earbuds spent almost a month in the service centre within an year of total usage. I am not sure why a brand like Sony have such issues going on and provide such bad service. The reason most of us go for these big name brands is because of the trust we have in them. But, such incidents make me question myself on spending big money on these brands instead of spending it on some other cheaper yet similar or even better sounding products.
@@AnoopKumarPG21 Thanks for the reply..in my case the out of the box version is 1.6.1 and I'm not planning to update it because of the same issue u mentioned. One more thing to add.. The sound out of the box was okayish then I changed the codecs to ldac and then it was beautiful but still lacking high volume (I was listening in 100% volume but still wasn't enough as i have the Wh h900n headphones which sounded better)...but just few hours back out of nowhere the volume automatically increased.. I can't go up above 70% of the volume now. What is this phenomenon and is it normal in earbuds? Did the earbuds just "Burned in"?? It sounds Awesome now btw
@@ritammukherjee3272 Hey. Yes, the sound out of the box was not impressive for me either. I had to fiddle with the equalizer to find the right kind of sound that I like and then, they were perfect. I don't use LDAC as I stream my music from Spotify and it doesn't stream at bitrates which requires LDAC, also it drains a lot of battery. My setup is Custom EQ, AAC and DSEE Extreme ON. I am not sure about the burn in phenomenon as it was pretty much the same for me when it came to volume. I am someone who listens at lower volumes. So, it always fluctuates for me between 30 to 60 clicks. And yes, generally earphons do start to sound a bit better after few hours or days of usage. So, that might have happened in your case.
I started having battery issues with my pair about a year ago. Found out that this was very common and ordered a kit to replace the batteries on Amazon. They work like a charm again. Absurd that I had to do that in the first place
I have the same battery issues in my xm4 earbuds. It was given as a present for my birthday, after some Google searches I found that changing the battery is good. So I ordered a pair and changed both left and right earbud batteries, now it's working good. The model number of the battery is Z55H ( 3.8v, 0.29Wh). I ordered from Lazada.

Thank you for posting this. I had this exact issue with my wf1000Xm4 and I sent it back to Sony in the US and they replaced it and the replaced wf1000xm4 had the same issue after only 4 months of use. I had to give it away to a brother who was happy to go fix it. I'm so unhappy about this I'm very hesitant to buy the new WF1000XM5 and give Sony my money again.
Hey DHRME, ive got a guess on another reasom why it happened. Maybe (im not eben a bit sure, its just a possibility) before when the engineers desgined tge earbuds, they didnt make them for multipoint connection, so the bt device sends the audio file to the right earbud, that sends its done signal to the left, so when multipoint came out, the egineers basically just added it reverse. rhe 1st device connects to tge right the 2nd to the left so it has to be active, that causes the bad balance, but that doesnt explain the heat from it so i dont know
Hello sir, I've been your follower for quite some time and I like your reviews very much. I want to buy a tws, between neobuds pro and liberty 4. Can you please suggest to me the better tws among these two? Thanks in advance. It would be great to hear from you.
PSA: If you got them new, and they came with 1.5.0 from the factory, KEEP THEM ON THAT VERSION. The ones that came with 1.5.0 have been perfect for me. No issues whatsoever. Apparently 1.6 and 2.0.0 lower the overall length the batteries will last, and were mostly meant to address issues for devices that had been 1.4.2 before. Also, the ANC apparently isn't as good with versions after 1.5.0
J'ai une version de Mars 2021. En 1.4.2. Pas de souci même en passant en version 2. La décharge se fait équitablement et je tiens facilement + de 5h en LDAC et ANC actif (sans DHSEE ) :)
Updated to firmware 2.0 about 4 months ago when I posted this comment, and still I need to send them to repair now. They don't give me a new set, they are going to repair them. Right earbud drains battery in an hour and a half max and comes out of the case without being 100% charged. Normally it is only at 80% after hours or even days in the charging case. A mess, very disappointed in these "high-end" earbuds. I don't recommend them to anyone and I don't really trust they will be ok after repair. No more Sony earbuds for me, ever.
Had the same issue. Less than 6 months after purchase, the batteries won t last more than 30 minutes of music playing. Fortunately, they were still in warranty period, so I got my money reimbursed. I m so disappointed that I will never buy a Sony product again.
I have an absolutely ridiculous question. If I were to buy a new pair of the xm4's and use them with the most updated firmware, would I still end up with this issue? I don't really understand how that all works. I have had my xm4's since August '22 and they just recently started having this battery drain issue. My right bud lasts about an hour. Sony support quickly offered to issue me a refund (hoping that actually happens). While I am severely disappointed in this whole thing and the way they handled it and would prefer to not give them any more money, I'm just devastated at losing this model because after YEARS of searching for a bud that would work for me, this was finally the answer. They are literally the *ONLY" ones that will stay in my ears and are comfortable. I loved these so much. I tried the xm5 but they don't fit me right and because of that, the sound isn't as good, the noise cancelling sucks, and they hurt. I just don't know what else to do so I'm considering buying another pair. Looks like they've stopped selling them almost everywhere but I did see them at Verizon and also some new/unopened ones on eBay.
@@DHRME Thanks so much for the response. I didn't know if the firmware thing was strictly just on the app side or if the actual earbuds themselves made a difference. I know that if I buy a new pair there's no telling when they were actually manufactured and I wasn't sure if that made a difference at all. Thank you so much for your response. It feels really stupid that I'm actually considering this, but I just feel out of options.
There is no fix!! If you have 1.5.0 do not update that is the best version, mine got replaced and was given back to me with v2.0.0. Sound quality sucks.
bought mine back in September of 2021 and started about a month ago that my right bud would lose battery power 10x's faster than my left. Tried the "fixes" that Sony suggested, and giant suprise, it didn't work. Contacted Sony support today and they're switching out my set for a "new" set of XM4's.
My first pair had a battery issue ( right ear bud ). I exchanged for a new pair & the right earbud had a ping type of sound so I exchanged again & the 3rd pair did the same thing. I decided to just get refund after that. I’m just hoping 1000 xm5 will be improved with these issues.
Along the same lines, Android released an overnight update that killed my phone's battery nearly 10 years ago. Overheated, bloated, all of it. I wait to take most updates now.
Unfortunately I have that issue too. I know it was an issue, not a degraded battery, because it was significant. From about 5-6 hrs to less than 1 hr in a one day gap.😢
same issue. just contacted sony today. they got me to open and close the case a few times and said that might help. im pretty sure it wont but worth a try. they said thell call back in a week
I’ve had my Sony WF-1000XM4’s for just a bit over two years and last month I contacted Sony because of one side draining battery like crazy (but after 10min of it being drained, I’d tap it and it would say, “battery at 60%”)… well long story short, I ran the troubleshoot (which I had already done prior to calling), and after no luck, they sent me an RMA label and I just got my new ones today! Not bad customer support at all! Don’t let all the negative comments wear you down.
Can't speak for everyone, but the latest update seems to have fixed some of the weird behavior in my buds. I'm now able to use them at my desk again, multipoint paired with my phone in case I get a call. A big relief, because I like these buds a lot... of course, just in time for the XM5 to come out next week apparently. Considering my first pair of XM4 was DOA, and the major 2.0 update nearly fried my second XM4, I'm not exactly keen on being one of the first people to try the XM5.
I got the exact same thing. So here's what I did.... I called sony I told them about my issue with my wf1000xm4 They were notified by that before..... and they apologized They issued me a warranty to return the product They sent me email about the instructions and I returned the thing to the HQ. Now I am waiting for the replacement. Do not hesitate to call Sony coz you spend huge money on this thing.
I just fixed the issue with the battery of the left earbud and after a month my right earbud touch sensor stopped working ... These earphones are so fragile and hard to repair.
I had also the same battery drain issue on the left piece. The earphones were completely replaced by guarantee. Thanks Amazon 😊. But almost 2 years later, I had a new issue, the connection to the left piece was unstable, always getting lost. I replaced the earphones by the new m5.
Personally I think it's one earbud at a time. Most of us use one more than the other and the only issue I had was with my left earbud, the one I used much less. 6hrs on the right and less than 1hr on the left because it was always left in the case, charging. If you buy these earbuds new I suggest taking both out of the case even when you use one. I just got a pair for $99 manufacturer refurbished (batteries I'm sure) and I think they're well worth it..
Not 100% Sure that it works, but try changing Bluetooth audio codec from LDAC to SBC. I tried LDAC which greatly improved audio quality, but battery on one side was at 10% on one side and 60 on the other. When I reverted back to SBC the drainage was even.
This was a problem with my XM3's as well. After 6 months, the batteries began to drain quickly. Sony seems to really struggle with battery life of Ear Buds.
After trying many things, my WF-1000XM4 got a permanent battery damage even after updating to v 2.0.0. I cannot use them anymore. With fully charged, the right bud only has 95% & left bud 85%. After 15 minutes, the left bud decreased to 40% & suddenly reached to 1% in less than a sec. The right bud still can get through only 1 hour. I feel pity for my hard-earned money to buy this earbuds & now have to switch to another brands. In my country, there is no such thing of “free replacement program”. I will think twice to buy another new Sony TWS, although my WH-1000XM4 headphone still perform well.
Don’t forget them on charge. I’ve changed the batteries already because they would drain in no time. Now I face Bluetooth issues after dropping one on the floor. I thought I broke the one I dropped. I’ve reset them. So it started working again. But the issue is Bluetooth because the voice is well ok in both ears.
Bought my wf 1000xm4's 2years ago ... they worked flawless untill 6 months ago ... I ordered New Batteries and had them installed (cost of $42 for the batteries and $20 for them to replace),, charged them and with every extra option shut off ... I get about 1 minute and 45 seconds before they shut down from low battery STILL .... NOW WHAT ??? What are my options other than the trash ???
I got mine for Xmas 2121, this year it started to lose battery life from 4-5 hours to 2-5 minutes… and the buds have some kind of wired “buildups” like grease between the charging spots… And the Sony service center told me it would cost me 150$ to repair them… I deeply doubt that I’ll buy another Sony!
This problem can be temporarily remedied if you can replace your XM4's battery yourself, or pay someone else to get this done. The downside though, is that it'll burn through the same battery again after a while - my own XM4 is currently on its third battery set because of this, not sure how long this'll last 🤣
I am not sure about battery drain, but my left earbud stopped working all together. I am way past the return window and Sony was no help. I am out of luck.
Sony's lack of support really made this issue bigger than it should have been. They undersized the batter in the earlier models. I had 3 pairs and this issue took out 2 of them. Still great earbuds when they are working lol .
I hope no one is blaming you guys. You were just informing us of the new updates. It's great that we can get refunds for their mistake.

Excellent video 📹 thank you. The issue with a microphone during calls 📞 has not been fixed..any updates regarding that issue?
Sony is not ready to take these buds back and yes the problem still persist - Thank you for bringing it up to the world ... Though these were one of the favorite's but unfortunately cannot use them anymore as battery drains completely in just 20 mins. Sadly, nothing can be done as the warranty period is over.
Hi sir thanks for this vdo My XM4 left earbuds battery draining in 5 minutes after I tried to pushed software update to earbuds. Buds did not get updated though. After 49% update push failed. Kindly advice wat should I do. Thanks!
Contact Sony?
My XM4 suddenly stopped mirroring. I now only can connect 1 earbud to my phone. Reset didn’t work, any suggestions what to do?
I got the same problem and I don't know how it can be fixed
Got replacement and working fine on latest firmware.
can you do a video on nothing 2 vs sony wf-1000mx4 which one is more relevant for music
Did a digging and found out version 1.4.2 was released on 24-03-2022
I have version 2.0.0 and have yet to have any issues.
damn. just got the wf-1000xm4 today still sealed. Should i return them and/or wait for the next sony release earbuds?
Is the problem fixed now?
After the last update, the one on the left doesn't charge fully and drains very quickly. Need a quick solution,
Should I get WF1000XM4 or AirPods Pro Gen 2. ( xm4 are costing half of pro gen 2) in August 2023
I finally got mine refunded after 7 times RMA.
The new ones are a bit better balanced but the problem is still there
I have the extended replacement warranty so I'm definitely claiming it at the end of my 2 years

Should I purchase this in 2023?
Will it have issues like this one the new model?
Thank your for your integrity! I'd love there were more reviewers like you guys.
Our pleasure!
I've never had the need to update the firmware on my Sonys. They've been working just fine for the year and a half that I've owned them.
Hi bro, What Firmware version did you receive?
I'd be fine with just stock settings with 0 updates
the stock firmware doesn't support multiple devices connection
Is that only the Xm4 or other Sony models effected too? I have the LinkBuds S on my short list...Thank you all!
Not sure about Linkbuds, haven't seen any complaints about them.
@@DHRME ok thank you :)
Hey brother, I just ordered mine. Should i return them or keep them?? btw are your buds running fine now after replacement?
@@ritammukherjee3272 Hey. Yes, they didn't had any issue after the replacement.
This is a nifty info. Might need to come back to this if the issue ever arises

Good to hear
Bro can i buy this for iPhone 12?
Thank you for posting this. I had this exact issue with my wf1000Xm4 and I sent it back to Sony in the US and they replaced it and the replaced wf1000xm4 had the same issue after only 4 months of use. I had to give it away to a brother who was happy to go fix it. I'm so unhappy about this I'm very hesitant to buy the new WF1000XM5 and give Sony my money again.
Hey DHRME, ive got a guess on another reasom why it happened. Maybe (im not eben a bit sure, its just a possibility) before when the engineers desgined tge earbuds, they didnt make them for multipoint connection, so the bt device sends the audio file to the right earbud, that sends its done signal to the left, so when multipoint came out, the egineers basically just added it reverse. rhe 1st device connects to tge right the 2nd to the left so it has to be active, that causes the bad balance, but that doesnt explain the heat from it so i dont know
That's quite the theory! Possible of course!

Also, the ANC apparently isn't as good with versions after 1.5.0
Welp. Time to downgrade back to 1.5.0 from 2.0.0
J'ai une version de Mars 2021. En 1.4.2. Pas de souci même en passant en version 2. La décharge se fait équitablement et je tiens facilement + de 5h en LDAC et ANC actif (sans DHSEE ) :)

Is there a link to Sony's customer service for this?
I just looked and I am actually using 1.4.2 version and I have not noticed anything strange. I will update to 2.0 firmware which is out.
If you buy new now they should be okay for 2-3 years right?
Nope. I bought mine almost 2 years ago and they are dying in like 30 mins now
my Xm4's are in the service center from 31 January (for the second time) still have not received them (20 March 2023)
I have the link buds S and by the time I hear the battery low sound the difference in charge is 20%
my left airbud charging to full then after ten min using its become low battery and power off . can anyone tell me why ??
It's very likely the new models don't have this issue, Brooke. But - no guarantees!
I've heard that the new buds come with new firmware installed.
Damn, this sucks, these were the last wireless buds I was looking at! Is this firmware issue now fixed?
Not yet. This is the latest news.
Not just the battery, for me there's also this wind noise on the right bud when I turn on ANC/Ambient sound. I returned them.
My first pair had a battery issue ( right ear bud ). I exchanged for a new pair & the right earbud had a ping type of sound so I exchanged again & the 3rd pair did the same thing. I decided to just get refund after that. I’m just hoping 1000 xm5 will be improved with these issues.
This is why I always wait to update headphone software. Sanheiser screwed up the sound a few years ago with one of their updates.
Along the same lines, Android released an overnight update that killed my phone's battery nearly 10 years ago. Overheated, bloated, all of it. I wait to take most updates now.
Is there a real fix for battery issue beside claiming it to Sony?
It's not an issue with all units. Someone suggested that the units that were available around launch had this problem.
Man you have so high quality content. Keep on!
Thanks Melih!
I called sony
I told them about my issue with my wf1000xm4
They were notified by that before..... and they apologized
They issued me a warranty to return the product
They sent me email about the instructions
and I returned the thing to the HQ.
I have this issue in my liberty 3 pro right earbud. I think this is software issue and sometimes shows severe charge level in my lp3.
Having the same problem since mid July after one year of use. The battery life went form 5 hrs to 30 min. firmware 2.0.1
I literally had the same problem. Battery drained super fast in left ear bud.. tried everything to fix and nothing.
July exactly. My earbuds took a sharp decline . Overheating, red light blinking, they used to go 3.5 hours new now i get 40 min
mine are having this issue 1 year and a half out of warranty
This was a problem with my XM3's as well. After 6 months, the batteries began to drain quickly. Sony seems to really struggle with battery life of Ear Buds.
I have problem with the calls, nobody can hear me 😢 i don’t know why my voice sounds lower
Maybe this was fixed? I am on version 2.0.0 and I am not experiencing issues at the moment.
I'm about to purchase the xm-4 , has the issue been sorted , anyone?
Good call quality over zoom calls, multipoint, good anc and enc, wireless charging, best for workouts any suggestions?
Had this problem, managed to change the battery following another YT video and works ok now.
Should i buy them or not ???? Pls reply
No, get Galaxy Buds 2 Pro or AirPods 2 Pro
So sorry to hear this Danny.
Did you get it fixed with official batteries and official service?
I got mine for Xmas 2121, this year it started to lose battery life from 4-5 hours to 2-5 minutes… and the buds have some kind of wired “buildups” like grease between the charging spots… And the Sony service center told me it would cost me 150$ to repair them… I deeply doubt that I’ll buy another Sony!
Always top. Congratutions for your videos
Thanks Michele.
This problem can be temporarily remedied if you can replace your XM4's battery yourself, or pay someone else to get this done.
The downside though, is that it'll burn through the same battery again after a while - my own XM4 is currently on its third battery set because of this, not sure how long this'll last 🤣
I had the same issue and sony India after investigating and checking the issue gave me a free replacement even if the earbuds were out of warranty
I have this problem, as soon as I update the software my sony pairs were basically dead because now I can only listen to them 45 mins.
So, basically allowing them to update your devices is basically allowing them to damage the product so you need to change them
