I experienced a similar issue with my WF-1000XM4 headphones. Bought it more than a year ago, so the warranty ended 5 months ago. It was working fine, I was using it rarely, but suddenly it started overheating and the battery of the left one completely died. Now it works for ~5 minutes. After contacting Sony support they are very sorry and can only suggest contacting the service center for diagnosing and repairing it at my expense. After calling the service center they said it was not feasible to repair it because repair means just buying a new replacement for a broken headphone, which cost half of the new one.
Look like the only option is to buy a new battery, replace it myself, and hope that with new firmware battery will not be killed again so quickly.
A lesson learned is that even such companies as Sony can make crappy expensive products that will barely survive the warranty period and in no way will not admit their mistakes.
Will avoid Sony products in the future.

Sony replaced my original set after complaining. I had to jump through so many hoops to appease them first that there was indeed a problem before they would take them back. The brand new set that they send ended up starting the same issue within six to eight months. I’m not dealing with Sony again and most likely will not buy anything from them again. It’s not worth the hassle to deal with them again.
Sony used to be top notch during the 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s. They were the “Apple” of the day. No longer. Not dealing with them anymore. I spent $300.00 on these buds which are now garbage. Even people that have replaced their own batteries have had the same issue occur due to the horrible software as I understand it.

Sony ended up doing the right thing and just recently reimbursed me the full purchase price for the WF-1000XM4’s.
I ended up purchasing a set of long discontinued, but still hugely popular MDR-EX800ST earbuds. Yes, they are wired, but they sound very good.

Now the left one dies after 6 hours when the right one has 10-15% of battery left, whereas before the right one used to die after 4.5 hours when the left one had 35%. I called SONY. I told them this was a safety issue as underpowered batteries would heat up with a new firmware upodate causing them to pull more power than they were designed to handle. I relayed the reported cases where the buds have actually exploded. This can't happen with something that goes in your head. Sony agreed to service the buds at no cost. After about a month at their New York service center a new set of batteries were installed with new touch pad sensors. I still get this issue occasionally where one ear bud disconnects but not as frequent as before. The sound is AMAZING. Also, I did not have the receipt anymore (long story) and they replaced the units anyway.
Unrelated, I want to add a story of how I put them in the my jeans pocket once without the case very early on when I first received them back in 2022 and they accidentally went into my washing machine....a full cycle underwater! That must have been at least 30 minutes. I opened the case and when they weren't in there I instantly screamed SHIT!! I ran to the washing machine and pulled them out of my jeans and put them in a sock and ran them in the dryer for a couple of minutes until the sock felt warm and then let them dry for 3 days turned off obviously. They worked PERFECTLY. I don't think you're going to get that kind of build quality with anyone else. I was happy for the next two years until the big firmware update. I no longer install firmware updates until the update has been out for months and months. If your buds work fine no matter the brand don't update the firmware. I just went through this with a pair of Beats PowerBeats that I got NOS because I was impressed with the microphone quality after watching a guy on TV do a live interview on Zoom using only those buds. My first Beats product in 10 years or more. Great battery life probably because they dont have ANC and crispy clear phone quality but for use only on phone calls that's all I need. Then I did the Beats firmware update and one side started draining before the other bud had even reached 60%. I had to reset it over and over again. What a headache. if the two largest earbud makers can't figure this out then I wonder what the smaller brands are dealing with as far as bugs not mating with hardware on the decline (the battery).

This issue happened for my xm4, Right side had drain issue. Luckily my device had 45 days of warranty left. They replaced the right side bud only. Then due to battery health difference left side was not keeping up to the right side duration. Then left side was replaced. Hopefully now as the warranty is expired this issue does not happens. Now will only update if required.

I also had the same problem with my WF-1000XM4, I bought them in the end of June 2021, and I realized month ago that right earphone battery only lasts for one hour. In my country (Poland), there are two years of warranty, so I sent them to shop and after two weeks I got earbuds back with information that they replaced left and right earphone (case stays the same). Now, everything works pretty fine, and version of firmware is 1.4.2.

After your video, I tested my WF-1000XM4 which is also amongst the first batch too and also out of warranty. I am also on the latest version of firmware.
I tested it with my normal use plus extra 20 mins on my ears to see if I have the same problem.
Luckily I don’t have this problem.
However, it is true that the right ear bud uses more than left. My right earbud after 1 hour of use has 81% whilst the left earbud is at 82%.

Purchased mine in 12/2021. Don't know when the problem started, but I'm on firmware 2.0.1 now. But I'm only getting about 20 minutes out of the right one now. I contacted Sony online (chat support). They've asked me to send my earbuds and case in to service. They are going to re-pair a new (probably refurb?) set with the case and send them back. So they do seem to still be replacing under the (unpublished) extended warranty. Still probably cheaper than a recall for them.

Bought my pairs in 2022. First year was great, last year has been bad but at least I still got 50 minutes of phone call battery so it's not as horrible as many others. I replaced the batteries in the case and in the earbuds themselves and now they're pretty much perfect again. I'm not going to buy new earbuds every 2 years and the process of replacing the batteries was very simple compared to Airpods pro for example.

Here because I bumped into this as well. Really annoying and it's probably why there are so many recertified versions out there for sale -- the right drains faster for sure, but they can now only hold a charge for about 45 minutes compared to the hours I got before. I'd be curious to know if they just used poor-quality batteries or if the way they designed their charging circuit in the case just constantly cycles the battery (e.g. keeps topping it up and doesn't turn the devices off).
I see some have had luck with Sony support, so I may go that route, and see what they say.

My Bose QC wireless earbuds battery also died in less than a year of owning it. Unfortunately, because I bought it in another country at the time, I was not able to have it replaced under warranty because our local country's Bose service center would not accept it since it was not bought from them. They also said that the manufacturer does not make replacement parts for these kinds of issues so if you have battery issues, time to throw away your expensive $300 earbuds which you used for not even a year. I also did have some few months of not using them before it decided to stop working on me (showing the blinking white and red lights of death).
Thankfully, my Sony wireless headphones is still working flawlessly since 2017 until today (2023) and can still last 2 roundtrip long haul flights above 10 hours without need to charge in between. And this is even if I am not able to use it for a few months and not charging them.
I will be keeping away from wireless earbuds with charging cases for now until the tech is more stable.

@Aaron is Loud and Wireless For me, my LEFT earbud is doing this. I purchased mine in June 2021. My left earbud runs out of battery in about an hour.
If I just take it out of my ear and use the right one and then place the left one back in my ear like 30 mins later, the left earbud sometimes reports something like 40% battery (I'm like WTF, I didn't even place you to be recharged!). Plus, sometimes if I breath into the left earbud or speak, it'll turn back on saying I have like 10-20% and then it'll turn off again after a min typically. I'm on Firmware: 1.4.2 with Android software version: 9.2.0
I also noticed some other issues perhaps non-related to this video:
    1. Left Earbud sometimes automatically raises or lowers volume when I'm working out
    2. Most of the time when connecting with my Samsung Android with Bluetooth, the left earbud won't allow volume up/down control of the volume until I turn on and off the earbuds a few times. Not sure if this is related to app privileges when there is a lock screen protection on my phone or some other reason.
Would def. appreciate your thoughts on the above.

Thank you for bringing this issue to light, Aaron. I think you're the first youtuber who brought up this issue.
I have had similar experience as well, I pre-ordered my pair last year, and I was using the XM4s for 6 months. After 6 months, I began noticing that my right earbud dies off way quicker than my left, and the discrepancy is about the same as yours.
However, what's more disturbing about my issue is that it is before the firmware update of 1.4.2 (I updated my firmware after Sony replaced my first pair).
It's also noteworthy to mention that there are a lot of Reddit posts with the exact complaint. So, thank you for writing the email to Sony, and do let us know what Sony says about this issue.
Hopefully, for those who are just experiencing the issue now, I hope that they are willing to do some sort of compensation (like the replacement programme as you mentioned).
P.S. My battery issue was fixed after replacement.
