It seems backwards but having a low click through rate with high views is actually a good thing because it means YT is suggesting your videos to more people, a portion of who may not be interested and thus won’t click through, but those who are will click and watch your video. Great breakdown on a complex topic Tim!
I have 20% CTR on some videos, some even with 100K+ views and good watch times, yet most views come from search and videos are rarely pushed by recommendations still.
So basically guys if your content is absolutely amazing and is getting high average time spent watching by a viewer but you are confused as to why your impressions and click through rate is low is because the people that youtube is recommending the content to are not clicking on your video but youtube still recommends your video because of the watch time your video has. Eventually if you dont correct your thumbnail or title youtube will reduce on recommending your content.
I had always looked at my click through-rate and thought pretty negatively of it, after watching this video I've got a bit more confidence in my videos! Thank you!
Thank you so much for the helpful tips. You inspired me to make my own TH-cam channel about LEGO. Even though I have only 510 supporters, I still feel blessed for the amount of support that I have. 😊 🌈
I'm so excited about my recent growth (like... 300%?) since I restarted my channel 3 weeks ago. I guess I'll have to go back to the park and find that unicorn! .
I stared making videos 4 and half months ago. I uploaded 20 videos so far. My goal is to improve the video quality every time. There are people who started at the same time as me and literally don't care about video editing, video resolution is flat out bad, no music, no intro or outro and still got 3 times the grows as me. (Same niche). I am very critical to myself (I would be ashamed to upload a video like that.) So I can flat out 100% tell I produce better quality content than them. Yet I get 200 expression on the first day of uploading sometimes that results in 40-50 views. Second day 100 expression and on third day only 50. Why is that? I just cant seem to be able to break out even tough I every time I fix something to get better at it.
I feel you bro. Growing on YT is hard. Sometimes less is more, I know people saying their most stupid videos got viral and the ones where they've put the most work were barely seen. I am also very critical so uploading whatever is a N-O for me. I guess we just need to wait for the results, promote our content on reddit/facebook and hope for a miracle :D
This video keeps it real. The macro factor of audience appeal is one that's a hard limitation. Understanding the viewer as a person is key. I just published my 7th video and my audience is people who want the Bible explained thoughtfully, fairly and objectively without a political party platform agenda or denominational bias.
Please reply to my question. I posted a video and few days later it's impressions and click through rates came high. I have 6.8click through rate And 40 % audience retention. Then suddenly my impressions fall.. Even with good click through rates and good avg watch time..! Why is that😔. I thought this video will get viral.. Why youtube does this??. . .
I probably need to work on my titles, I think my thumbnails are okay but I've been experimenting with that lately to see what works the best. My retention rate needs work though. :/
Hi Tim! Thanks for the video. Was digging into my own analytics and found something interesting, in that most of my traffic from suggested videos are all my own videos! I guess it's neat that my videos are pointing people towards my other videos, but think that I'm potentially missing out on other audiences out there. How can I broaden this?
Hey! Thanks for the advice, I instantly subscribed after 3:30... You dismantled my bias that came from watching other videos on CTR (I'm not sure when was the last time I revisited this topic, maybe half a year before starting my channel?. My bias was high CTR was essential. I think it's still kind of important, especially when you're doing niche related content -- but the way you worded it, made it seem much more flexible.
Thanks Tim. I tend to only update Titles if the video is doing poorly. If it's doing well but maybe it could do even better I don't touch the title. I've done that before and it seemed to muck up the searches so then it performed even worse for the next 3 months. But I constantly tweek thumbnails. They are tough to get right.
Thanks Tim for sharing this helpful information. 👌👍 Any idea how one can increase the % of "TH-cam recommending your content"? Maybe the videos are related to a specific niche as you mentioned?
Hi, I'm making streams about F1 during the Grands Prix, I was making around 20-30k views during races, but it suddenly dropped down to around 1-2k views... My CTR is the same as usual (even a bit higher), my average view duration is higher than usual, but my impressions are extremely lower than usual... Some guys who are making similar content doesn't seem to have a drop of views, so I really don't know why it dropped like this... If you have any explanation or solution, it would be nice! Thanks ;-)
Ok, perhaps I'm missing it, but you mention "High" "Low" and "Massive" which I understand is relative, however, are there % ranges that you'd lump into High and Low? Like is 0 - 40% CTR low? 40 - 60 is medium and over that is high? I'm just hoping to establish a baseline I can use to evaluate where I'm at.
So I’m gonna go ahead and call BS and challenge you on that first explanation on why someone is getting low impressions because of a “not so good thumbnail or title”-bc impressions doesn’t define any of that and Vice versa. That all is dependent on how TH-cam pushes out your video in that particular niche. Low impressions means nobody is seeing the video because TH-cam didn’t push it out. It has nothing to do with thumbnails. That logic you explained would only make sense if the impressions were high but the clicks were extremely low. THEN you can say the thumbnail or title is crap. We are subject to TH-cam’s very bias and selective algorithm for videos. Most people today ride the popular niche bandwagon and pay for advertising. Otherwise the organic stuff on certain genres/categories/niches will take forever.
I get your point, but that’s not quite how it works. You get low impressions because TH-cam tried surfacing your video (thus you have some impressions), but it didn’t out perform all of the other videos TH-cam could’ve shown to viewers in terms of CTR, watch time, and other metrics, so TH-cam stops surfacing it. So you end up with low impressions. It’s not 100% because of the title and thumbnail, but that tends to be the best place to start with addressing the issue. Ultimately, you’re saying that TH-cam is trying to find viewers for videos, but it’s actually the opposite. TH-cam is trying to surface the right videos for viewers.
@Video Creators He is correct actually. I've analysed this on multiple channels. It seems that you still won't receive impressions aimed to the same audience group as another creator. Also, your impressions for the same niche will drop if TH-cam decides to not give you as many impressions as previous videos, regardless of CTR% & Retention. ONE example; One of my recent video thumbnail & title, better quality than I've ever done before. A CTR of a massive 27% & retention of 75% average. Impressions only 20,000. No new subscribers, from the looks of analytics only my subs watched (99% were subbed). Compare this to another video of mine with a worse thumbnail ; CTR of 12% & retention of only 40%. Impressions 450,000! Of course it did 20x better simply because TH-cam pushed it out to more people. Same exact niche, nothing really different. TH-cam decided what gets pushed or doesn't regardless of CTR% & Retention. Again, that's only one example.
Really helpful video. Thank you so much. I just have a couple of questions. What is a good click through rate and number of impressions for someone who is just starting out?
My ctr is good and my avg is good, my thumbnails are fine but my impressions are super low for no reason and my topic isn't just for 200 people way more then that
I'm having this issue too. About a 12% CTR, 40%-50% retention but really low impressions and views overall. I can keep improving but where is the growth?
@@InfniteZ111 yes, they have went up continually. I have yet to really know what a good number really is though. They're at 275k right now for my channel.

ok, So my videos have great metrics, like, the video with most views has 10.7% CTR, Average view duration is 52%, Analytics says it recommends my video 81.8%. but these are generated from the time when i uploaded this video, after 2-3 weeks impressions went to almost zero, it's not getting suggested and therefore views are almost close to zero. what could possibly be the problem?
It seems apparent that Impressions always leads to more Views. I checked my video analytics and noticed that Views from Impressions funnel number (essentially CTR) doesn't match the Traffic Source data which also shows Impression and View counts. The View numbers in the Traffic Source data are always higher, and the CTR% is wrong if I calculate based on the data under Traffic Source (should be a higher %). So I am missing some understanding of what's count in the CTR% or don't understand how Views are counted. How is the data counted if someone clicks on my video presented in Suggest Videos and watches the video a second time, either right away or later, is that one count for an Impression and two counts for Views?
What about if you are getting zero impressions, on my other channel my last 2 videos in the past 24-36 hours since upload have not received a single impression. The channel as a whole has 6 videos in total and only 10 impressions but maybe because it is a new channel. But still what do you do if you are not even getting 1 impression?

then. the real question would be How to get a video suggested more by youtube? do you know how?
@@mr.kututube182 thats the question
