Hace muchos años soliamos viajar a muchos lugares por la Argentina con mí familia , mí padre solía poner sus cassettes en cada viaje y está canción me hace volver a aquellos tiempos buenos sobre las rutas por sobre todo el saxo final!
I worked as a street performer in the 80s in Portobello road. I recognise some of the people in the song. The "man on his back there escaping from a sack there" was a hard-drinking escapologist up at the top end near the Earl of Lonsdale who had one trick getting free of a chain he asked someone from the crowd to tighten, collect the money and down to the pub. He was miserable old bastard who had been there since the 50s I was told by some stallholders. He actually threatened me once cos I took his pitch and he was desperate for a drink. "The blind man singing Irish" was a blind busker on the corner further down the road. He collected his money in a kind of brass collection dish that organ grinders usually had. The song (he sang "about the long gone Irish girl" was "Molly Malone", (She wheels her barrow through streets broad and narrow etc) , with which MK also hinted at the long-gone-ness of the Belle. I don`t know who the "Belle" was but I imagined her as a crazy irish drinker who had kind of lost the plot("torn up all her roots, now")staggering round the street dancing and giving people a bit of lip etc. Great song.
Lions is about Leeds not London, the clues being that in London the lions in Trafalgar Square are cast from bronze but the lions in Leeds are sculpted from stone. Also London has the underground where as Leeds had the overground tram system. Single handed sailor and the gallery a few other songs based in London where Mark would travel through past the gypsy moth that was keep near to the cutty sark. Mark would visit a friend who worked in the london gallery. Anyway, great video.
Hey Mark: por qué no la tocas esta canción en la última gira que harás en solitario con el nuevo álbum de este año, 2024. Sería una estupenda celebración de buen recibo. Saludos a tu banda. See you soon
Belladonna's on the high street Her breasts upon the offbeat And the stalls are just the side shows Victoriana's old clothes And yes, her jeans are tight now She gotta travel light now She got to turn up all her roots now She got to turn up for the boots now She thinks she's tough She ain't no English rose Ah, but the blind singer He's seen enough and he knows Yes, and he do a song about a long-gone Irish girl Ah, but I got one for you, Portobello Belle She sees a man upon his back there Escaping from a sack there And Belladonna lingers Her gloves they got no fingers Yeah, the blind man sing in Irish He get his money in a tin dish Just a corner serenader Upon a time he could have made her, made her She thinks she's tough She ain't no English rose Ah, but the blind singer He's seen enough and he knows Yes, and he do a song about a long-gone Irish girl Ah, but I got one for you, Portobello Belle Yes, and the barrow boys are hawking And the parakeet is squawking Upon a truck there is a rhino She get the crying of a wino And then she hear the reggae rumble Belladonna's in the jungle But she is no garden flower There is no distress in the tower Belladonna walks Belladonna taking a stroll She don't care about your window box Or your button hole Yes, and she sing a song about a long-gone Irish girl Ah, but I got one for you, Portobello Belle
This version is very good but honestly I prefer the album version. Marks singing and phrasing had a more rhythm and 'snap' for want of a better word on the original that really added something almost unique, and it just doesn't come across here. And I really miss the resonant guitar that was such a stand out feature.
Verse 1] Bella donna's on the high street Her breasts upon the off beat And the stalls are just the side shows Victoriana's old clothes And yes, her jeans are tight now She got to travel light now She got to turn up all her roots now She got to turn up for the boots now [Chorus] She thinks she's tough She ain't no English rose Ah, but the blind singer He's seen enough and he knows Yes, and he do a song about a long-gone Irish girl Ah, but I got one for you, Portobello Belle [Verse 2] She sees a man upon his back there Escaping from a sack there And bella donna lingers Her gloves ain't got no fingers Yeah, the blind man sing in Irish He get his money in a tin dish Just a corner serenader Upon a time he could have made her, made her [Chorus] She thinks she's tough She ain't no English rose Ah, but the blind singer He's seen enough and he knows Yes, and he do a song about a long-gone Irish girl Ah, but I got one for you, Portobello Belle [Verse 3] Yes, and the barrow boys are hawking And the parakeet's squawking Upon a truck there is a rhino She get the crying of a wino And then she hear the reggae rumble Bella donna's in the jungle But she is no garden flower There is no distress in the tower [Outro] Bella donna walks Bella donna taking a stroll She don't care about your window box or your buttonhole Yes, and she sing a song about a long-gone Irish girl Ah, but I got one for you, Portobello Belle

Belladonna's on the high street
Her breasts upon the offbeat
And the stalls are just the side shows
Victoriana's old clothes
Yeah she got the skirt so tight now
She want to travel light now
She want to tear up all her roots now
She got the turn up on the boots now
She thinks she's tough
She ain't no English rose
But the blind singer
He's seen enough and he knows
He do a song about a long-gone Irish girl
But I got one of for you my Portobello Belle
She sees a man upon his back there
Escaping from a sack there
And Belladonna lingers
Her gloves they got no fingers
Blind man he's singing the Irish
He get his money in a tin dish
Just a corner serenader
Once upon a time he could have made her
She thinks she's tough
She ain't no English rose
But the blind singer
He's seen enough and he knows
He do a song about a long-gone Irish girl
But I got one of for you my Portobello Belle
Yes and these barrow boys are hawking
And a parakeet is squawking
Upon a truck paper rhino
She get the crying of a wino
And then she get the reggae rumble
Belladonna's in the jungle
But she ain't no garden flower
There ain't no distress in the tower
Belladonna walks
Belladonna taking control
She don't care about your window box
Or your button hole
She sing a song about a long-gone Irish girl
But I got one of for you my Portobello Belle

Anyone know what concert this is from?
Is not from alchemy. Its from Paris 20-06-83. Just one month previous to the famous Alchemy recording.
Verse 1]
Bella donna's on the high street
Her breasts upon the off beat
And the stalls are just the side shows
Victoriana's old clothes
And yes, her jeans are tight now
She got to travel light now
She got to turn up all her roots now
She got to turn up for the boots now
[Chorus]
She thinks she's tough
She ain't no English rose
Ah, but the blind singer
He's seen enough and he knows
Yes, and he do a song about a long-gone Irish girl
Ah, but I got one for you, Portobello Belle
[Verse 2]
She sees a man upon his back there
Escaping from a sack there
And bella donna lingers
Her gloves ain't got no fingers
Yeah, the blind man sing in Irish
He get his money in a tin dish
Just a corner serenader
Upon a time he could have made her, made her
[Chorus]
She thinks she's tough
She ain't no English rose
Ah, but the blind singer
He's seen enough and he knows
Yes, and he do a song about a long-gone Irish girl
Ah, but I got one for you, Portobello Belle
[Verse 3]
Yes, and the barrow boys are hawking
And the parakeet's squawking
Upon a truck there is a rhino
She get the crying of a wino
And then she hear the reggae rumble
Bella donna's in the jungle
But she is no garden flower
There is no distress in the tower
[Outro]
Bella donna walks
Bella donna taking a stroll
She don't care about your window box or your buttonhole
Yes, and she sing a song about a long-gone Irish girl
Ah, but I got one for you, Portobello Belle
Good version.. but still a bit too much trebble..
Her gloves aint got no fingers...
Great version, but remember: "She don't care about your window-box or buttom hole".
A rather lame version compared to the wonderful pathos of the original album track.
