This song is criminally underrated and underplayed. There are many "great" bands who are incapable of reaching this level of quality.

You’re correct this song is brilliant but I would lean towards Wild West End just topping it slightly

@Basicboi999 "Six Blade Knife" the best of all? Six Blade Knife wouldn't even scrape into the top 50 Dire Straits songs, literally. And Telegraph Road isn't a ballad. A ballad would be "Love Over Gold", "Why Worry", or "Brothers in Arms". Telegraph Road is of the operatic/progressive rock epic genre, similar to "November Rain", Stairway to Heaven, Innuendo, Bohemian Rhapsody, The End, When the Music's Over, The Soft Parade, Wake Me Up When September Ends, Three Days, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Paradise by the Dashboard Light, American Pie, Gethsemane, Jokerman, Achilles' Last Stand, Kashmir, Echoes, Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, MacArthur Park Suite, Fading Lights, In the Light, In My Time of Dying, Trilogy (Sonic Youth), The Diamond Sea, Taurus II, Crises, Crime of the Century, Rudy, Scenes from an Italian Restaurant, Horizon (Jon & Vangelis),A Day in the Life, Carouselambra, et al.

One of the best story tellers ever, one of the best writers ever, one of the best players ever. All with an amazing unmistakable sound that instantly says Dire Straits. They will be played as long as their are ways to play them. God blessed us with the greatest music since the original classical.

Ohne Zweifel ein super Song. Eine der Besten überhaupt. Mit wenig Hokus Pokus einfach genial. Dire Straits , für mich die Beste Band aller Zeiten. Der Sound einzigartig, fantastisch unerreicht. Sie begleten mich nun schon seit 47 Jahren.🎸👍

This song is magical. I have listened to it thousands of times, but I will never get tired of listening to it. The same quality you can hear on Sultans of Swing. Unforgettable and wonderful song. Thanks for the beauty Mark.

indeed. this is my favorite dire straits' track. Mr. Knopfler plays the resonator guitar as it should be played. they were invented before electric amplification of guitars for the purpose of projecting sound. they became especially popular among bluesmen playing in noisy bars in the mississippi delta 80 years ago. this song, and the resonator guitar in particular, possess an unsurpassed sonic beauty. yes, this song is not missing anything. anything missing would be on the part of the listener.

Living in a trailer in the middle of Texas . In the middle of nowhere. I long for the city. Got no car and feeling isolated. But, if I need a good cheering up, I go to the guitar man. Just like that song by Bread. Another band I can listen to anytime I want. Thank God for music that takes me back to my youth and all the good times I had. Even in my aunt's VW bug we listened to the radio and then on to my Uncle ( in the future ) Good Times Van. Smoked alota good weed and first time to try hash was in that van. On a album.cover with a strait pin and a small drinking glass, aided by a straw. The album was that Allman Bros. Album with the big peach on it. Those were the days. Can't really explain to the young folks. They are so brainwashed about wrong and right. To all the good times we had in that van. Going to the Brazos and camping out for the weekend. Playing parcheesy on a homemade board with marbles. Things were so much more clear and simple then. Peace Out. America

The guitar take the rhythm of a walk, the melody repeats almost the same pattern ( as a walk does) playing on dynamics until the variation that talks more closely about the girl and announces the closing of the story. All is like a short, magical story, a portrait painted with music and words.

I worked as a street performer in the 80s in Portobello road. I recognise some of the people in the song. The "man on his back there escaping from a sack there" was a hard-drinking escapologist up at the top end near the Earl of Lonsdale who had one trick getting free of a chain he asked someone from the crowd to tighten, collect the money and down to the pub. He was miserable old bastard who had been there since the 50s I was told by some stallholders. He actually threatened me once cos I took his pitch and he was desperate for a drink. "The blind man singing Irish" was a blind busker on the corner further down the road. He collected his money in a kind of brass collection dish that organ grinders usually had. The song (he sang "about the long gone Irish girl" was "Molly Malone", (She wheels her barrow through streets broad and narrow etc) , with which MK also hinted at the long-gone-ness of the Belle.
I don`t know who the "Belle" was but I imagined her as a crazy irish drinker who had kind of lost the plot("torn up all her roots, now")staggering round the street dancing and giving people a bit of lip etc. Great song.

Knopfler (both of them) brings a man's man aspect to pop music which you don't find too often and they do so without effort. The subject matter of this song could could have easily turned into an "A Team" (Sheeran) or "Another Day in Paradise" (Phill Collins). But this band takes on street scenes for what they are worth without exaggeration or missing anything. "Wild West End" is another example. And yet in songs that involve real emotion, e.g. "Romeo and Juliet" they capture it all. The lyrics aren't quite Dylan or The Beatles but their sound fills in a lot of the the gaps. Had they come on the scene ten years earlier they would have been embedded as an integral part of the "rock and roll sound' as a way to make an indelible impression song in an understated fashion. I still have their first four albums on vinyl. They (the group) still sound fresh.

    • @kingpetra6886
      @kingpetra6886 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@Callouscalculus Don't get carried away. By the time Dire Straits released their first album, there was to much to catch up with; there was no wave to ride. . Like Zappa, who did ride the wave, he has a PhD. You can tell he studied and more importantly absorbed what had had happened between 1963 to 1970-1971. And there are very few people that have done that. Western culture is still feeling the effects in the present day. That didn't happen with music from the first half of the 20th century. Zappa parodied what was happening as it happened. In some sense Dire Straits begins to wrap up the rock and roll era. Dylan is, like nobody else i,s transcendent. If T.S. Elliot wrote songs the words would have that same quality that you find in Dylan, transcendent. Dire Straits keeps day to day and very real. They make you want to pay close attention to the detail. The Beatles when they were were like the weather; they were every where. They established context in the cited period of time. And even after they broke up they alll had successful solo careers. Look at Harrison's "All Things Must Pass". - three records, six sides A lot of that were things that didn't get on the Beatles albums.

    Belladonna's on the high street
    Her breasts upon the offbeat
And the stalls are just the side shows
    Victoriana's old clothes
And yes, her jeans are tight now
    She gotta travel light now
She got to turn up all her roots now
She got to turn up for the boots now
    She thinks she's tough
    She ain't no English rose
    Ah, but the blind singer
He's seen enough and he knows
Yes, and he do a song about a long-gone Irish girl
Ah, but I got one for you, Portobello Belle
She sees a man upon his back there
    Escaping from a sack there
    And Belladonna lingers
Her gloves they got no fingers
Yeah, the blind man sing in Irish
He get his money in a tin dish
    Just a corner serenader
Upon a time he could have made her, made her
    She thinks she's tough
    She ain't no English rose
    Ah, but the blind singer
He's seen enough and he knows
Yes, and he do a song about a long-gone Irish girl
Ah, but I got one for you, Portobello Belle
Yes, and the barrow boys are hawking
    And the parakeet is squawking
Upon a truck there is a rhino
She get the crying of a wino
And then she hear the reggae rumble
    Belladonna's in the jungle
But she is no garden flower
There is no distress in the tower
    Belladonna walks
    Belladonna taking a stroll
She don't care about your window box
    Or your button hole
Yes, and she sing a song about a long-gone Irish girl
Ah, but I got one for you, Portobello Belle

I have loved this track from first time around but always felt it was weak and missing something ,like the plodding acoustic guitar /piano doesn't do it justice and you think ,maybe a sax , lead guitar or synth solo would only add to it's charm and the whole album ,coming after the success of the first one, came in for some criticisim at the time .

I like it for exactly the reasons you don't. But it would be a sad day, if we all had the same take on music eh?

    Lyrics:তিনি দীর্ঘদিন ধরে চলে যাওয়া আইরিশ মেয়েকে নিয়ে একটি গান করেন
    Belladonna's on the high street
    Her breasts upon the offbeat
And the stalls are just the sideshows
    Victoriana's old clothes
Yeah she got the skirt so tight now
She want to travel light now
She want to tear up all her roots now
She got the turn up on the boots now
    She thinks she's tough
    She ain't no English rose
    But the blind singer
He's seen enough and he knows
He do a song about a long-gone Irish girl
But I got one of for you my Portobello Belle
She sees a man upon his back there
    Escaping from a sack there
    And Belladonna lingers
Her gloves they got no fingers
Blind man, he's singing the Irish
He get his money in a tin dish
    Just a corner serenader
Once upon a time, he could have made her
    She thinks she's tough
    She ain't no English rose
    But the blind singer
He's seen enough and he knows
He do a song about a long-gone Irish girl
But I got one of for you my Portobello Belle
Yes and these barrow boys are hawking
    And a parakeet is squawking
    Upon a truck paper rhino
She gets the crying of a wino
And then she gets the reggae rumble
    Belladonna's in the jungle
But she ain't no garden flower
There ain't no distress in the tower
    Belladonna walks
    Belladonna taking control
She don't care about your window box
    Or your buttonhole
She sings a song about a long-gone Irish girl
But I got one of for you my Portobello Belle
