Fun fact: The Last Bastion was nominated for a Webby Award, and won the People's Voice award for "Best Writing in Film & Video". And without a single line of dialogue to boot!
I've found that films that have little to no words at all are better because it prevents exposition... everything is shown, not told. There are a bunch of tricks that are being used in this video to convey Bastion's story. Take 8:03 for example, without any dialogue or narration, it clearly conveys that Bastion has a choice between what he had and what his programming wants. It's excellent. Mei's cinematic by contrast is almost entirely exposition and imo suffers because of it. I don't need it explained to me that Snowball sacrificed himself for his friend. The most emotional part of that cinematic was when she paid respects to her colleagues, and it's because nothing was said, we were shown and allowed the time to absorb it without it being dictated to us. This is not to say that dialogue or narration is bad, after all The Martian in large part just Mark Watney talking to himself and giving exposition, but in the emotional parts, such as when he's about launch, we don't need it explained to us why he's emotion... because we already know why. (th-cam.com/video/GBhuWvJwI8M/w-d-xo.html)
It's info time: -He is an elimination omnic, unit E-54 "Bastion" -Not being controlled by the omnium and probably being damaged his engage protocols activate more or less like PTSD, that's why he decided to live far from human society -The castle is called Eichenwalde and yes, it's a map you can play in the game
Every animation other than the very first one in them museum take place in or near places that exist in-game. In fact, this animation is the only one that doesn't take place directly in part of one of the levels. You can even see the effects on those maps too, like the broken window in Winston's lab where he threw the Talon soldier through it. It's really nice attention to detail.
Huh. I always assumed that he was supposed to participate in the battle we glimpsed, but for some reason he landed in the wrong spot and could not be remotely-activated from that distance. He just stayed in sleep/stasis mode right where he fell until the bird "woke him up" decades later.
he did, but during the Omnic army approach he was damaged and he shut down, its why the battle programming only flares up, as it was damaged. Also of interest should be that the bastion type robots were not originally Omnic robots but what ever was in charge of the attacking Omnics during the war, took over the existing Bastion units and adapted them for the war making them basically their grunt unit
Awesome Reaction! By the way, the person, that was mentioned at the end was one of the animators for these shorts. He died summer 2016 in a motorcycle accident... R.I.P. Yvain Gnabro...
This is my favorite Overwatch short, it's so beautiful, sad, and touching all at the same time! And I completely agree, despite not a single word being said the entire time it tells a lot of story. :)
As a fellow german, I love how they pictured the Schwarzwald (Black Forest). The city he is walking towards is supposed to be Stuttgart I think, thats where I was born :D Also, if you like reacting to stuff like this, you could take a look at "The faster The treadmill" from I Fight Dragons, it's a music video^^ Also, the more I see you react to those shorts the more I wanna play the game with you and show you all the maps xD
the black forest and Stuttgart are both part of swabia, a place you probably never heard of if youre not german but we invented 90% of the stuff you use in daily life :3 #swabianpride
Dusty 05 Wow! This was supposed to be Germany!? It's absolutely gorgeous, I'd love to visit Germany and maybe even move there some day!!! 😊 Thank you for the recommendation too :)
Was waiting for this one- love the reaction, as always! Edit: Oh, and it's uh... Bah-stion. Like Bad, with a soft a. You got it right in the end at 11:25. When you run out of Overwatch content, Riot Games did a bunch of similarly styled animations for League of Legends. Little less plot, but plenty of eye-candy and characterization. A New Dawn is my favorite.
If you get a chance, there is a live-action Overwatch fan film called Heroes Never Die starring Mercy and it's made by Lupin Productions. It's an excellent video and I think you will enjoy it.
actually when you get done with all of these there's something else OverWatch related you could watch, well three things actually. They have a narration of Tracer's backstory (how she got her powers and joined overwatch), and two different versions of Tracer VS the Scout from TF2, an actual fight and an awesome rap battle. (And if you want there's also a rap battle between the medic character Mercy who's also awesome vs the Medic from TF2 and they're amazing)
This is one of my favorites too! The short is really a not-so-subtile comment on post traumatic stress disorder in soldiers. Bastion was a soldier in a long past war and his memories of the war are triggered by small things like the woodpecker. Doomed to fight a lost battle, he was saved by a small intimate thing, a friend of a sort. A lot of the Overwatch creators are from the US and Russia and have family members that fought in the conflicts of the Cold War and post 9/11. I reckon many of the stories in the game are inspired by that
If you like that kind of depiction of robot, this always reminds me of 'The Iron Giant'. A movie that has been out since before I could remember, and one of my favorite animated films period.
Hey, here's some info so you're not confused for the next short! (Infiltration) The one in the neon purple was a new character released by showing this short at Blizzcon (the blizzard convention). It was a huge reveal at the time because people had been going crazy over an ARG related to that character (basically just some really complicated secret hunting stuff). So, that was a big reveal and is why the point of view is formatted like that at the beginning.
This short is what convinced me that someone in Overwatch's writing team is a huge, glorious fan of Hayao Miyazaki. There are _so many_ Laputa robot parallels.
The bird is named Ganymede, and it appears in the game in some of bastion's "emote" and "highlight intros",bastion is an omnic, the flashback was from the omnic crisis, the B.A.S.T.I.O.N. units used to be defense bots(I think,I forgot some lore of him and I'm guessing),that were reprogrammed by the "god programs",or basically high leveled evil Machines that can control stuff, like Athena in the recall short, but she's good, the castle does exist in the game,it is in a German map called eichenwalde that you can play on,it was also added only a few days before this short was released. Extra information: Eichenwalde was deserted after a fight between omnics and people called "crusaders",which are the people with giant energy shields that can shoot fire out of their large hammers, that are wearing crusader armor in the flashback moment protecting and fighting with the soldiers,we aren't sure if that flashback and the fight at Eichenwalde were connected or not,oh and there is a crusader who's German in the game,he's really old and isn't in any of these shorts, also he's H O T and fuck bastion, broken and needs some fix.
This is the most emotional and beautiful of the shorts. it was gorgeous, it was cute, it was sad. And it was completely silent. Even though Zenyatta (another robot in the cast of Overwatch) is basically a robot trying to find himself past the programming, a simple wordless short makes Bastion the emblem of self realization in this game's lore.
It's not Reinhardt. It's Baldric von Alder, the leader of the German Crusaders. He died during the war of Eichenwalde against the Omnics. In fact, you can still see his armor sitting on his throne in the Eichenwalde map inside the castle where the last payload point is.
Ah! A fellow Arizonan! We have some really pretty forest areas here, but not quite anything like the northern states. The White Mountains are really pretty, and have a lot of grassy plains.
A little backstory here: Bastions were robots build during Omnics Crisis (a war between humans and omnics) as a weapon. This Bastion broke before the attack and was stuck for many years there in the forest. As you said, he win the fight with his deadly programming. PS. There will be more shorts, the released are from season 1, so we can wait for the new ones. Love the reaction!
Very good reaction. I had played Overwatch for while before they made this short and let's just say it made me love the robot... Trust me someone playing Bastion is enough to make a Nun curse lol!
Now released new overwatch short films and they are really good. Strongly recommend "honor and glory", "rise and shine", "shooting star". And "reunion" that release at this week.
I kind of got Short Circuit vibes the first time I watched this. I guess it's just the concept of a robot designed for war going out and discovering things about the world. Great reaction, by the way!
He's not an Omnic but was created by them. When the Omnics started attacking humanity in the law, it's not been revealed yet as to why, Omnics were sort of similar to AI who had become self-aware, most of their forces were those mass produced Bastions, The flash-back is obviously from the war, it was accessing the dead Bastion's memory. The castle is in the game, the map Eichenwalde.
That flashback Bastion had was of the Omni Crisis war and the big guy you saw with the hammer and shield was Reinhart Wilhelm! He was another member of Overwatch and was the one who spoke at Soldier 76s "funeral" *wink wink* lol. Not super important but just wanted to let you know he was a cameo appearance that you might have missed.
The Last Bastion is my second favorite (second to Alive because its Tracer) Because it sort of reminds me of a combination of Wall-E and Zog from Astro Boy, the large robot left to rust in the woods that grew plants and was thought long dead until kickstarted by in here a curious bird and in Astro Boy by the 'Blue Core Energy'.
I am no expert on Overwatch lore but from what i remember reading Bastion is an omnic that was deployed in the first omnic war but was disabled(i think it/he/she? was air dropped) and stayed that way ever since as depicted by the overgrowth. The castle shown in the background is one of the maps. The city Bastion was headed towards was a target during the war. I think this is a good brief "history" lesson but if anyone wants to add or correct anything...
The name of the bird is Ganymede. This was my Fave of all the Overwatch Cinematic's so far. It told so much story with no words. Yvain was one of the Lead Animators on all of the Overwatch shorts he was killed on his way home from work in a Motorcycle crash.
Dave Meades Aww I love how they gave the bird a name! This short was breathtaking, not only through the animations but also through the storytelling! Wow I didn't know that was how he was killed, that is awful. Thinking about that is so scary and brings tears to my eyes. I send all my love to the families.
Whats awesome is that in the Game of the Year Edition, you get to play as this version of Bastion as it comes with Origin Story skins :P I have it equipped on Bastion rn and I just got the game last night!! You should play it Molllyyy!!
This reminded me a lot of NieR: Automata; basically Bastion was ordered to participate in that war and that was his role, but after the war is over and you no longer get orders, what do you even do as a machine? And therefore Bastion goes on to find its purpose on its own.
The birds name is Ganymede and is with Bastion in the game as his companion even though he doesn't do anything (Ps:That is a skin for Bastion in the game called Overgrown)
Bastion: I'm innocent! Bastion: **thinks he hears gunshots** Bastion: MUST PROTECC NATURE FROM BAD BOIS!! **RELOADS** Bastion: DA TING GOES SKKKKRRRRRRRRAAAAAAA!!!!
Oh, and kinda off topic but there's a one off animation that's really serious that I think you might enjoy called 'There's a man in the woods', an animation based off a poem about (I think) a true event that happened in an American school. It's very interesting and you might like it. (Dun hate me if you don't though. ;-;)
Fun fact:
The Last Bastion was nominated for a Webby Award, and won the People's Voice award for "Best Writing in Film & Video".

josoi Its fucking Blizzard mate they can do anything

Having no dialogue makes it universal. Anyone can understand what’s going on.
It's info time:
-He is an elimination omnic, unit E-54 "Bastion"
-Not being controlled by the omnium and probably being damaged his engage protocols activate more or less like PTSD, that's why he decided to live far from human society

Vincenzo Cinà Thanks for the info 😄

Vincenzo Cinà (update) and in the new comic we can see that Torbjorn takes bastion ‘under his wing’ and takes him way ...
Awesome Reaction! By the way, the person, that was mentioned at the end was one of the animators for these shorts. He died summer 2016 in a motorcycle accident...
R.I.P. Yvain Gnabro...
Cirya Taur Thank you!
That is terrible, hearing this makes me cry. I hope the families are doing well considering what happened.
This is my favorite Overwatch short, it's so beautiful, sad, and touching all at the same time! And I completely agree, despite not a single word being said the entire time it tells a lot of story. :)
Actual Disney Princess Bastion.
In the comic people are aware of Bastion and send Torbjörn to go find him, but then Torb sees how nice Bastion is and helps him hide.
Curse you Blizzard for giving an adorable robot PTSD
You seem like an emotional and warmhearted person, bless the people that live close with you.
They based bastion off the iron giant. That movie always made me cry.
You can tell they made it in honor of someone special, they put a lot of heart into this.
As a fellow german, I love how they pictured the Schwarzwald (Black Forest). The city he is walking towards is supposed to be Stuttgart I think, thats where I was born :D

the black forest and Stuttgart are both part of swabia, a place you probably never heard of if youre not german but we invented 90% of the stuff you use in daily life :3 #swabianpride
Baden > Swabia :^)
And you are all cheap as hell XD (moved down swabia a year ago)
Dusty 05 Wow! This was supposed to be Germany!? It's absolutely gorgeous, I'd love to visit Germany and maybe even move there some day!!! 😊 Thank you for the recommendation too :)
Yea as he said it's The Black Forest, just type that into Google and search images, it's 150 km in size.
Its amazing what kind of stories they can tell without using any words
Was waiting for this one- love the reaction, as always!
Edit: Oh, and it's uh... Bah-stion. Like Bad, with a soft a. You got it right in the end at 11:25.

You say castle overwatch Video Honor and glory
A truly amazing reaction! And, the castle is indeed in the game, in the form of a map.
MrPopart Wow thank you so much 😊
I never played Overwatch and probably never will, but The Last Bastion is one of my favourite videos of 2016.
If you like that kind of depiction of robot, this always reminds me of 'The Iron Giant'. A movie that has been out since before I could remember, and one of my favorite animated films period.
not sure if this was said already, but the "flash back" that Bastion saw through his link with the destroyed robot was a glimpse of the Omnic Crisis.
Hey, here's some info so you're not confused for the next short! (Infiltration)

your reactions always seem so genuine and full of emotion I love it :D I started out watching one and now I can't stop untill I watched all of them ^^
I like your mental fan fiction. :D I do it all the time with books and movies. Sometimes it's a great way to come up with new stories.

Tato Patato I completely agree, this short was all of the above! I loved every single aspect of it! I can't wait to see more! 🤗
Sombra, Ana, and Orisa both have character trailers you should watch after you're done with these. the comics show what happens to bastian after this.
Reaver257 link to Orisa and Anas?
It's Bastion, like Sebastian without the Seb - Love ya Molly
Shandy Warrior Ahhh thank you!! 😅 Love you too 😊
Molllyyy speaking of Sebastian *whispers*Black Butler
Bastion means something that keeps or defends a belief or a way of life that is disappearing or threatened
I watch this one over and over just to see Reinhardt. Love that adorable Giant.
It isnt Reinhardt, its another Crusader, you can hear on a ingame voiceline on the Eichenwalde map that Reinhardt says he wasnt there during the war.
It's not Reinhardt. It's Baldric von Alder, the leader of the German Crusaders. He died during the war of Eichenwalde against the Omnics. In fact, you can still see his armor sitting on his throne in the Eichenwalde map inside the castle where the last payload point is.
he's gloooorious!!
These overwatch shorts are gems!

Anthony Horner Thank you! Haha omg I'd love to play him if I had the game 😂
Now released new overwatch short films and they are really good.
Strongly recommend "honor and glory", "rise and shine", "shooting star". And "reunion" that release at this week.
found this channel through recommended list and gotta say love the reactions you can always tell its real and its super nice to see :)
you should try the latest Overwatch short featuring Reinhardt, called "Honor and Glory"
I kind of got Short Circuit vibes the first time I watched this. I guess it's just the concept of a robot designed for war going out and discovering things about the world. Great reaction, by the way!
EvadeplusDerk Thank you so much! 😊

The one character that kills and brings the most grief is the one that gets the most emotional short.

zeroraptor Thank you! Love the backstory info :)
every soldier who goes to war comes back with PTS, Bastion was no different.
Should she watch the character trailers to get to know the current roster? This would obviously be after she finishes the animated shorts btw.
2:21 and waitwaitwait... you live in Arizona??? THAT'S AWESOME, SO DO I! Soooooo coool~
Never been so early!
And yes Molly, the castle is in game [at least part of it] in a map ^^
The name of the bird is Ganymede. This was my Fave of all the Overwatch Cinematic's so far. It told so much story with no words. Yvain was one of the Lead Animators on all of the Overwatch shorts he was killed on his way home from work in a Motorcycle crash.

Wow I didn't know that was how he was killed, that is awful. Thinking about that is so scary and brings tears to my eyes. I send all my love to the families.
Molllyyy Ganymede is in the full game he sits on Bastion and in one animation he sits in the big guns barrel when Bastion is in Tank mode.
best reaction for last bastion
The castle is in the game. It's called Ikenwald. That's where Reinhearts master died.
Bastion units were the main force of the omnic military, so they're considered omnics, even though there not like the human ones.
bastion is proof that robots can have feelings to
at least in the future
Love your reactions, Molly.
Евгений Крылов Thank you! 😊
Whats awesome is that in the Game of the Year Edition, you get to play as this version of Bastion as it comes with Origin Story skins :P I have it equipped on Bastion rn and I just got the game last night!! You should play it Molllyyy!!
As matter of fact that castle is a map in the game and it is called Eichenwalde and is part of the land that the crusaders were fighting for
Love your reactions! The subscribe button has now been clicked.
Bastion has a different bird for every different skin you might pick. Anywhere from a dove to a crow.
Mean ol' Omnic War, givin' Bastion PTSD. Rude.
You should watch the gameplay trailers too, to see how everything works in-game. They are pretty cool too.
React to Honor and Glory!! Its another Overwatch cinematic short
This reminded me a lot of NieR: Automata; basically Bastion was ordered to participate in that war and that was his role, but after the war is over and you no longer get orders, what do you even do as a machine? And therefore Bastion goes on to find its purpose on its own.
Yay. More Molly
Also. You should read the comics. They're really good.
The big guy with the shield is named Reinheart. The Bastians killed his master.
The birds name is Ganymede and is with Bastion in the game as his companion even though he doesn't do anything (Ps:That is a skin for Bastion in the game called Overgrown)
Brandon Muniz Omg I love how the bird is in the game too!!! 😄
Bastion: I'm innocent!
Bastion: **thinks he hears gunshots**
Bastion: MUST PROTECC NATURE FROM BAD BOIS!! **RELOADS**
Bastion: DA TING GOES SKKKKRRRRRRRRAAAAAAA!!!!
A game where the bot rediscovers the world. I would love it to death.
Oh, and kinda off topic but there's a one off animation that's really serious that I think you might enjoy called 'There's a man in the woods', an animation based off a poem about (I think) a true event that happened in an American school. It's very interesting and you might like it. (Dun hate me if you don't though. ;-;)
Good god you're gorgeous - and I love the genuine reaction as well!
you should totally react to the comics that Blizzard made, it gives lot of more story of the game and awesome insight into other heroes
I'm kinda late to this, but I think you should react to the tf2 meet the team videos!
wonderful reaction like usual!
Molly, you got to react to the red vs blue series! Made by the same people who made RWBY, it's a mixture of comedy and action!
Bass-t-un, bass like the fish t like a t and ion like un.
They should of recruited birds in the omnic crisis lol
the bastion unit was the face of the omnic crisis. the battle I think is the crusaders last stand in the omnic crisis.
this is a good time we just got a teaser for doom fist.
Hey!!! Arizona ftw!!! I live in Queen Creek!! Great video!! Definitely subbing!!
Now you gotta do a Reaction video for "The Bastion Song" by JT Music.
Almost did make me cry to
this is the 1 i was waiting for 8>)
i love your insight and intellect. You aren't one of those ignorant, narrow-minded people. haha love it
Over watch isn't a Capture the Flag kind of game, It's a First Person Shooter with different game modes
Oh Molly, did you cry? You're beautiful
thiago henrique Thank you! Can't wait to do more! :)
When is the next Q&A? 5k subscribers?I asked some questions and I'd love to know the answers.
the blizzard version of sleeping beauty :))
baytion XD
dang, I'm not tearing up! I've got sth stuck in my eye... in both actually.. (;o; )
Nice reaction :) could wait to see this one :)
Marcmaxx Thank you! More to come 😊
Awesome cant wait :D
Now you need to do a reaction video to: "The Bastion Song A Musical by JT Machinima"
bastion is an omnic
bastion is the only disney princess who have ptsd..
Hmm thats true! Riot games did make a whole bunch of amazing animations too. Would be nice if you checked them out!
it's absolutely hilarious how you spell these things. not in a bad way!
Short a like Bat. Bastion.
Will you be reacting to other anime soon? We're dying of anticipation to see your reactions to My Hero Academia and attack on Titan! 😄😄😄
When you say Bastion, you do it with the 'a' in the shortened version like 'apple'. I hope that makes sense.
Bastion is my favorite. ^_^
Bass (like the fish) Tea On
Bass (like the fish)- tea- on
Hope that helped :)
let molllyyy make predictions!!
Thank you! 😊
need more blizzard cinematics, world of Warcraft for example
What is this? My notifications have failed me. I was not informed about this. We'll, at least that makes it a nice surprise!
*at the start* it’s Bastion (Bah•st•shun)
*at the end* the last pronunciation was correct.
We got forest in Switzerland🇨🇭
