Rev3Games No I was around 10 at the time, but to give you a picture of the moment, instead of stabbing it, I snapped it in half. I remember after it hit me that I snapped my DS in half, I walked downstairs crying and said to my dad that I dropped it. Needless to say that didn't go as well as I thought it would.

4:09 so 2 years ago, osu! had about 4.5 million (according to doode in the video), now we have almost 9 million as of 10 October 2016... o.o
think about it, every person who gets into osu! has to be told by someone else about it, so logically every person who gets told about it will tell 1 or more people about it, along with some PR dreams (lirik and sodapoppin) happening on occasion which dragged in a lot of new players.

It's good that OSU is getting some recognition. I play all the time, and have been for the past 2 years. I have never played rhythm games before it, and that tells you how good it is. New comers will have an amazing time, even if you've never played a rhythm game before. I also have played Hatsune Miku project Diva F, which is another enjoyable rhythm game. A must play for any Miku fan. OSU name is "Narukami75" if anyone wants to add and play some osu together.

I swear Elite Beat Agents introduced me into a lotta music I would've never listened to. It is definitely true that beating the later levels can be so satisfying, especially when the songs are so energetic exciting! I replayed it a few years ago and hadn;t lost my touch, Beat it in a day. I think I'm going to go out and buy it again! Thanks so much Nick! Of all the people in Rev3Games, you would be the person into these rhythm games!
Ha, I have the same relationship with a lot of EBA's music. I recently heard September by Earth, Wind and Fire out in public, but it sounded totally wrong to me... until I realized it was because I was used to the EBA cover version and not the original. Kind of embarrassing! -Nick

Rhythm games, especially DDR, have kind of become a bit close to my heart. Hell, I believe that one of the reasons I listen to so much electronic music today (well, for DDR, mainly the Eurobeat and such) is because of my early encounters with a DDR Extreme machine at a local cinema. I was a child raised off Disney. No matter pretty much wherever you go, my life was affected by Disney. There was one CD I had known as, "La Vida Mickey", it was kind of a Disney re-imagining of popular songs such as " Livin LA Vida Local", &, "Mambo Number 5", just to name a few. One of the tracks on there was, " The Cup of Life", an English cover of "La Copa De La Vida" but with the voices of Disney characters singing along with the refrain. I loved this song. It was my favorite song on the album. One day, at the theater, I was in the little arcade when I saw the dance machine. The last time I was there, I had a line of people waiting to play, and there was no line now. So I did the obvious thing and give it a shot. When scrolling through the song list for the first time, what song did I stumble across but a DDR edit of ,"La Copa De La Vida". When I saw this, and played it to confirm it was the same song (pretty much), and from there I was caught. I kept playing, on and on until I started getting one hundred combos and such (still on a low difficulty, mind you), and was on a mission to master it. At some point along the way, I decided to check out the other songs on the list, and then I ran into NAOKI's "1998", a high energy dance track which I immediately grabbed onto. Suddenly I was playing DDR on my PlayStation 2, starting with DDR Supernova, then DDR Extreme 2, and so on. It was one of my earliest encounters with the high energy electronic music I've come to love today. After getting pretty good at the console games (by good I mean able to pass some pretty high level songs on Heavy and completing songs on Challenge), I then found out about Stepmania. This was ideal for me having at that time become a bit of an otaku, so I wanted the same easy to learn, hard to master gameplay with anime themes and such, so what better way to play than to load up stepmania with these kinds of things. Later, I went a bit nuts. After finding out about Renard, I had heard of something called Mungyodance. Now, I had not gone into Stepmania and modded it into a fully Mungyodance supporting system (I are mod illiterate), but I did import the step files for the songs (sadly without the mods on them). That was pretty much some of the greatest challenge I've experienced with that system, and by far the most enjoyable. I had tried OSU somewhat recently on a mobile device, and because of where I am with DDR, I extremely overestimated my abilities. But now I'm rambling and no one will probably read this far into the story of a silly kid and his DDR upbringing. If you read this far, here's an internet cookie.

Despite the convenience of playing osu on a touch screen, I still prefer mouse and keyboard especially for maps that require multiple fast paced taps on short intervals. Also it just seems faster than what your hand could do alone.
I played with KB/M for several years before I gave up on it because of the ridiculously long jumps between notes that many of the harder beatmaps have which are nearly impossible to do accurately and quickly. It wasn't until I got a graphics tablet that I was finally able to get back into the game and beat the songs that I couldn't ever do with KB/M.

Rainbow Pff Didn't I just say that I kept practicing for several years and still couldn't do it? It got to the point where I decided to just ditch the mouse and got a tablet just for playing osu!. I'd say it was definitely worth it.
259 Well some people adapt and other don't I mean i can play mouse as fast as tablet however with tablet you can go way faster.
Rainbow Pff Yeah that was the biggest problem. Long jumps require not only fast movement but also accurate movement which I couldn't do both at the same time with a mouse.

Parappa the Rapper, Um Jammer Lammy and Vib Ribbon all got me hooked on the rhythm game genre over a decade ago and it's still my favourite game genre to this day. I also used to love playing the Osu and Elite Beat Agents games. I own most of the Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Rocksmith and Dance Central games, and still play them from time to time. I recently discovered the game Hatsune Miku Project Diva F and absolutely loved it, and quickly imported all of the previous games in the series. My most anticipated game this year by far is the English translated version of Hatsune Miku Project Diva f 2nd for PS Vita. I've been obsessively listening to vocaloid music for months now because of those games.

My first DS import was Band Brothers, and then Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan. I must have been 15 too. Great to see these old gems getting some spot light on this channel.

Osu! is great, but, especially for songs that are quite a bit harder than what you showed in the video, using only a tablet wouldn't work. It gets to a point where the circles come too fast for you to be able to click them all with just a pen. That's why most top level Osu! players use a tablet as a mouse, but a keyboard as a way of clicking (you can press z and x instead of clicking).
Playing Easy, Normal and Hard maps on a Surface should be good, but I wonder, how one could clear streams that are quite common in Insane maps (and even some hard maps). xD
Glad to see Guitaroo Man getting a shout out on this video. By far, the best rhythm game that has ever been created! Had know idea that they same team created Elite Beat Agents, which is another favorite of mine. I recently got a Surface Pro 3, and will definitely download Osu on it, thanks for letting me know about this awesome game!
Nick, our teenage gaming tastes matched up SO MUCH! I adooooored EBA in middle school, and even drew fan art of it in old notebooks. I perfected every stage and it just...that game is amazing. I was considering trying Ouendan on a DS emulator recently to scratch that itch again, having not heard of Osu. But Osu sounds incredible!
If I had a touch screen laptop or a Surface, I can imagine that it would be revelatory. For now, I'm gonna download the ever loving hell out of it and jam out to some tunes until they somehow find a way to get it on iOS or HTML5!

Without a doubt, one of the best endings to any video game ever is the ending to EBA! No matter the difficulty you choose it's just the most satisfying event to experience. The dopamine just consumes you! Sure there are more poignant and sophisticated endings (Shadow of the Colossus, Red Dead Redemption, Silent Hill 2) but ranking on just pure satisfaction EBA would top any list.
Totally agreed. Those last two songs are great, but Jumping Jack Flash especially is just the perfect high-octane ending song, and fits with the escalation at the end of that game so well. (Also: that Christmas song totally made me cry at least once.) -Nick

I started off playing rhythm game on good old Pump It Up at my local arcade. After that it just sort blew up from there. Bust-a-Groove, Parappa the Rapper, Um Jammer Lammy, Frequency, Amplitude, Dance Dance Revolution, Beatmania IIDX, Pop'n Music. The list goes on.
Music games will always hold a special place to me. Nothing quite like them and each gives you it's each unique experience whether you're on a dance pad, pretending to play guitar or pretending to be a DJ. All of those experiences will always be special to me and whenever I load up one of my old rhythm games I can't help but smile.

Nintendo is pissing money away by not making an Ouendan/EBA for the Wii U...

Except Nintendo aren't the devs. He even mentioned iNiS in the video, saying they moved on to work for Microsoft (although they also made some games on IOS and even one on 3DS). Keiichi Yano has even said osu! was awesome, which makes me think he's not interested in making another Ouendan.
Whether Nintendo own the rights to the series, I don't know. But, considering Nintendo's reputation with Fangames, they'd better fucking not continue the series unless they want the fans of osu!, the biggest rhythm game at the moment that's totally eclipsed Ouendan in popularity, hating them for shutting their game down. Though considering the devs are comfortable with selling merch and premium memberships, I'd say they're pretty confident they aren't going anywhere.

Holy shit, Ouendan and Gitaroo Man were made by the same person?! What a revelation! Gitaroo Man influenced me so much that I took up guitar because of it. The Legendary Theme is one of the best musical pieces in video game history.

I kind of got into Osu when I got my Samsung tablet (ativ 700t, basically their Surface Pro 1 equivalent) and it's a great game. I love it, though I don't find myself coming back to it much because I really prefer a game to throw quality songs and stuff at me rather than their setup of kind of having to go out and search for them. Having some proper curation a la Elite Beat Agents would be great, because I don't know what to search for. Not that I'm expecting every song to be as great as the Elite Beat x Phoenix Wright one set to a Journey song - just solidly constructed stages that don't have clear faults mechanically, set to songs that won't likely offend my ears too much.
But you see what I mean anyway - I'd rather have the game recommend me stuff than have to search for something that may not exist, and if it does, may not be made well. I found that Osu users tend to be very polite with their song reviews, so you can pretty much shit out whatever rhythm and placement you want and as long as it's a song people like and it's not straight-up broken, you'll get 4-5 star ratings consistently. Though I haven't played in quite a while, so maybe it's better.
Personally, I'm a huge rhythm game fan. Elite Beat/Ouendan was great, but my favorite import (no, my favorite music game (no, actually, my favorite game of all time)) was Daigasso! Band Bros. There are rhythm games, and there are 'music games' and then there's the truest music game of all right there. Band Bros is the high school music geek's best friend. It's rare that a music game actually lets you control your part of the song, and (at least on higher difficulties where the full array of mechanics were enabled) DBB basically turned your DS into a musical instrument.
Anyway, I might have to check out Osu again. I really did enjoy it (enough so that I made my own skin for the game), but lack of decent quality content (that I could find) and the way the site limited you to so few downloads really killed it for me. If there's actually a built-in search and download feature now, I might get back into it again.

Rev3Games It's such a rarity to find Band Bros fans, I think you're the first I've ever run into randomly! It did come out in Europe as Jam With the Band, I believe, but I'm not sure how that one was in comparison. Part of what I enjoyed about the original, its expansion cart and BBDX was the mostly unfamiliar music... though it definitely needed more video game tunes. BBDX's fan community online is really the only reason I've ever wanted an R4 cart, and I almost bought one just for that purpose.
Did you know there's a new one out on 3DS? Part of me is almost tempted to import a Japanese 3DS just to be able to play it.
really solid feedback regarding curation. we are starting to work towards this, initially with the monthly beatmap contest realeases (which are now bundled with the game) and hope to keep inproving this aspect, too.

Theres an unlimited download limit for free players as ***** has made for the community! also to acces the search and download feature it's a paid service for 4$ a month which you can use. I don't have information if it will ever be for regular players however there are things such as beatmap contest releases which you can download and install and you can play straight away without any wait time and if you are spectating someone and you don't have the map, ***** has made it so it will automaticly post in the #multiplayer channel the song that is played and if you click on the link it brings you on the site to download it.

Never played those older games. I was a DDR kid when it hit arcades and my Playstation 1. Even playing on a D-Pad was a great time. I've been playing OSU for the past 2 years and in that little time the game has come a long way and continues growing everytime I log in. And its FREE!~

Rhythm heaven will always be my favorite. But I could try this Osu out.
My rhythm game of choice is Rock Band because I'm a drummer and I have a device so that I can connect my electronic drum set to it. Using a legitimate drum set on Rock Band 3 is so much fun.
I would have loved to play with an electronic kit! The RB kit is not meant to last and has little bounce.
I have never played Elite Beat Agents before, but I have been playing Osu! for around a year. I still play with a mouse and keyboard, but I'm thinking about switching to a Tablet just because I've heard that the game becomes easier with a tablet. I find that the game is very easy to get addicted to. When I play some of the harder songs with my headphones on, I get into this trance-like state were I can just lose myself in the game. I love it!

I got into Osu! when it first came out, I didn't play it at the time (my pc was such a dinosaur it barely worked TH-cam) but around 2011 I got into it and it is FANTASTIC. It is so addicting and satisfying and I love it, I even bought a drawing tablet and mechanical keyboard just for the game. Not to mention the game IS COMPLETELY FREE AND HAS NOT ONE ADD ANYWHERE. This game is perfect to me and I love it.
Ouendan was also the first game I imported at around the same age. I don't even remember how I found out about that game now, but my fondest memories on DS come from that game. I absolutely love every game in the series, but I refuse to play OSU! without a touchscreen(which I don't have).

Rev3Games There is a loooooot of music being mapped in osu! that is from other games, for example Touhou, beatmania, O2Jam (Memme and M2U is epic) and jubeat, and there is still a lot more. I first played Elite Beat Agents back when I was in middle school! Years later I forgot about it until someone mentioned Osu! to me this year and ever since I've been scratching my nostalgic itch with it, its amazing!
I own Ouendan 1 & 2 as well as Elite Beat Agents and I never knew this Osu thing was a thing! Kinda wish I had a tablet to play it on as I couldn't imagine playing this type of game any other way.

I've said it before, but this is exactly the kind of insightful, hands-on news that I feel people liked from the Somethings (with obviously your style). I had no idea about this rhythm genre persisting (I stopped after Stepmania in high school). It really feels like you've tapped* into a great product design.

I started playing Osu! Yesterday, and it's awesome!!!! I love how the beat maps sync so well to the taps and how simple and hard the game can be! The community also feels a nice and meme-full place :)
EBA and Ouendan 2 are some of my favorite games of all times. I play em a bit every month on my 3DS.

Weird, I was just re-playing that for the first time in many years on my phone with an emulator last week. Really one of the best rhythm game ever. From the mechanics to the sound effects, the story, the characters, the comical scenarios. It really is awesome. It actually had me attached to the characters as I try to cheer them on to beat their hurdle. And then of course in the end all the ones you've help came and return the favor was just awesome. Aside from arcade rhythm games, there really are no competition.
"Most OSU players play with a mouse" ... Really? Last time I checked almost every top player uses a graphics tablet. Although there are some really good mouse players. Most good players don't use a mouse. Also touch screen OSU is REALLY bad for streams because you can't tap a pen as fast as 2 keyboard keys.

I used to be really into Elite Beat Agents back in the day, and I also imported things like Rhythm Tengoku Gold and Meccha! Taiko no Tatsujin DS: 7-tsu no Shima no Daibouken. I've tried to play Osu! before, but I can't get into it. The two things holding me back and the control scheme and the music, the latter of which is the more important.
I've never found any music I like for Osu!, which makes it difficult to play. Without knowing the rhythm of the song it becomes a lot harder, and I don't like any of the music enough to want to learn the songs. I'd also prefer a touch screen interface like the DS or the Surface, but I'm sure I could get used to the mouse if I put in enough time. Instead, I end up just sticking to O2Mania, StepMania, Audiosurf, and Beat Hazard, as all of those are still fun without having to be as familiar with the music.
I have to say though, Osu! is incredibly well put together and robust, there's not really any direct competition remotely close to its quality on PC. The others I could think of would be Audiosurf and Beat Hazard, but they're both so different from this style that it's not really a fair comparison (also Osu! is free).

I played EBA first when I was in third grade and it later on brought me to Osu when I was in 8th grade just because it's a great rhythm game to play many songs
OSU was quite popular among MOBA and RTS players. It's believed it can help substantially improve hand dexterity, apm, and speed and precision of mouse positioning. The first time I saw it was on a stream of some korean pro-player.
Love Live School Idol Festival is a fantastic mobile rhythm game and is one of the best that I have played in a long time!

Thanks for the tip, I've been searching for mobile rhythm games. This has a bit much of micromanagement for my tastes, but still still pretty fun.
Hell yeah! Love that game, though it can get a bit sluggish, having to repeat songs to collect the friend points and stuff, but it helps that the gameplay is really well made and can be quite challenging even after you've beat it.

I like to try OSU buuutttt... it upset me that are not dancers or history mode that was the cool part and not many wester music i'll love play an OSU version of play that funky music or smoth criminal. I almost forget the covers in EBA are 1000 times better that the originals the OSU comunity will never take the effer of make cover excelents as INIS.

Hsephela but no dancers or story mode, that was the appeal to me. do you play Michael Jackson experience for NDS is like EBA/Osu Tatakae Oendan but really Crapy because the dancer (Michael) does not move with the markers (actually Michael was on the top screen but very generic dance). and no story mode. I don´t care about story in games but the dancers and the campy(cheesy) story, that made the game cheerfull fun to play and care. withou that is other generic rhythem game.
Cnight_LDV If mappers were confined to the movements of a character along with the song, the amount of things you can do with the song is limited greatly. It isn't any fun when restrictions like that are in place. I'm a mapper myself and can see myself getting pissed if that happened.

Cnight_LDV It seems hard at first, but once you develop your own style, it goes by faster, and you get better. I've been playing for almost 7 years and my mapping reached its best about two years ago. I'm mapping for fun now.

I played elite beat agents when it came out. I've always loved step-mania and DDR. Picked up Osu a couple years ago and i've been actually playing it on my original surface pro. You're right, it is the best way to play it

Rhythm Control 2 and Cytus on iPad is truly rhythm heaven. Nick, if you are looking for good touch rhythm games, play these games. I've been addicted for far too long.

Nice to see you guys giving EBA some love. It's probably my favorite and most played DS game. I've been meaning to import the Ouendan games for a few years now.
As for Osu, I'd play it more if I didn't completely suck with a mouse. Might give it a try if I ever pick up a tablet.
I found osu pretty much the same way! I played the crap out of elite beat agents and love rhythm games to death. When I found out that I could use my wacom tablet for more than just drawing I was thrilled. I've been playing osu for 5months now.

Btw another good DS rhythm game is "Rhythm Heaven", it's pretty random and hilarious.
I play Osu! for 3 years now and it really shines on PC using a graphic tablet and the keyboard. I played Osu on Tablet PCs and Phones, but the fact, that you can actually see the display while playing is the reason why PC does it best. And you can get crazy good at it, so friends will take a step back and stand there in terror/awe.
I currently use my Surface 3 for osu! My surface pen's tip ended up breaking a bit from the repeated tapping and I am currently looking for the other tips so I don't reck mine too much

Osu is so incredibly good, it's better than most non-free rhythm games. Everything from interface, multiplayer, statistics, compability with different controllers and devices and millions of little things. It's incredible, super fun alone and with friends.
When I tried Osu few years back, coming straight from moeru ouendan, I initially felt the m+kb felt horrible and left the game alone. I kinda rediscovered it almost a year ago and after some practice m+kb worked like charm. Now I'm playing hard maps and bordering some easier insane maps. I don't even feel like buying a tablet now.

I didn't even know this was a thing. I loved Elite Beat Agents and hopefully one day, some day, the 3DS will have it's own updated version.
I've been playing Osu! for a year now, and my preferred way to play it is with a Tablet and Keyboard. I play with a Wacom 460 and you get the hang of it after a while. It's also the main way that most Osu! players... play.
I loved Osu Tatakae Ouedan! It was one of my favorite rhythm games and I would play it relentlessly until I got perfect scores. So glad to see it getting featured!

I remember when a steam friend first told me about Osu after i saw steam say they were playing it, and my first thoughts were that I was completely amazed at how perfect of a rythym game it is. I'm a little disappointed now that i realized that the majority of songs are J-pop and k-pop songs (mostly anime openings and closings from popular anime naturally), but still really enjoy it since i know enough of its songs for it to be enjoyable to play with friends. One of these days I'm hoping to buy a couple dance pads and a drum controller that's compatible with my pc so i can use them both to play osu and use the ddr pad to play the more recently released Rythym dungeon crawler Crypt of the NecroDancer.
I went through a short obsession with Elite Beat Agents in college. One of those games that doesn't sound fun on paper or even look fun, but it's super engaging when you actually play it.
I love Rhythm games, including most of the popular ones, but two IPs that don't get the love they deserve are Donkey Konga and DJ Hero 2. I'm not exaggerating when I say that the freestyle cross-fading sections of DJ Hero 2 are the most universally smile-inducing thing in all of gaming.
Ouendan and EBA were two of my favorite DS games. I wonder if this will work on my Galaxy 3 tablet.
