    The half seal you tried to pull out is pressed into the housing using a special stepped installing tool so not to over load the spring and damage the sealing surface.
    It’s a wonder he didn’t have coolant in the oil due to loss of preload on the seal. As soon as I saw the wear in the oil pump I knew the shaft must of moved sideways and the noise could be the impeller contacting the snail of the water pump

    Are you sure that rotating face is PTFE? Nice Delsplanation of what looks like a Carbon/Aluminium Oxide (ceramic) mech seal.

    • @dirtygarageguy
      @dirtygarageguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Could be, didn't spectrally analyse it. Not exactly delsplaining though is it you twat 🤔

      Unless Yamaha have done it differently to everyone else, I'd say your dead right. I've replaced many of these at work rebuilding lifeboat fire and bilge pumps, and a couple on Honda bikes. The ring was always ceramic, and evident by how easily they crack if you don't install them carefully!

    • @goinhot9133
      @goinhot9133 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s not delsplaining if you actually know the topic at hand. He didn’t say it’s PTFE & that PTFE comes from recycled aluminum. That’s delsplaining.

    • @maxpower363
      @maxpower363 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      😂 Not a true Delsplain, I figured you were taking the piss a bit (thrown off by the super slippy I guess). I was waiting for a deep explanation of how they form the pencil leads into the carbon face, which is the super slippy one FYI.

  • @miles11we
    @miles11we 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    3 slippies. So is this the scale we are going to gauge all lubricity from now on? 0.00 - 4.00 slippies

    Mechanical seal very similar to the cx500 from the 70s. I’m having nightmares already about the fact of changing mine a couple of years ago.

    How much resistance should the whole assembly put together have when turning the oil pump sprocket? Should there be loose and tight spots in the rotation being it’s a pump?

    • @dirtygarageguy
      @dirtygarageguy  ปีที่แล้ว

      If there's no oil in it, then it should turn freely. Tight spots means the pump is damaged.

    • @kokobeatz7222
      @kokobeatz7222 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dirtygarageguy okay. I’m turning it with coolant and oil still in the bike and the chain hooked up. But the clutch basket it off. And it has a bit of resistance. More than I feel it should k think I hear a squeak noise when it gets tight. The service manual doesn’t give you much here. Just tells you to turn it and if it turns smoothly then it’s okay.

  • @Dr_Xyzt
    @Dr_Xyzt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hah. I'll be damned. That's a simple assembly. I wasn't expecting Yamaha to use a stamped steel impeller since everything else on the bike is so damn fancy. Then again, I've always been a fan of straight-vane impellers.

    Sooo were those scratches only cause by spinning it manually or is there some play in the system somehow..?

  • @b_mb4948
    @b_mb4948 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting stuff.
    How does that mechanical-type seal compare to a more traditional lip seal? Is there any reason Yamaha would go for one over the other? You mentioned how reliable it is, but wouldn't the longevity of one of those PTFE coated lip seals be similar?

    Is this a recall? why is yamaha selling a bike that would fail like that i just picked up a 05 and the guy told me the bike kbb for 4500 an that their was nothing wrong with it we made the deal i got it put in my name an got a plate an tag for it an last night i opened the oil fill cap and the clutch side is full of snot i mean bad worst than ive ever seen im a wreck right now and dont know what to do
