Is This The Best Puppy In the World?

- Today we are talking about how I think one should frame issue of being happy with puppies, or in other words, how to have the best puppy in the world!!!
All too often, novice dog trainers get caught up comparing their skill level and their puppy's progress to profession dog trainers on social media. Well I'm here to tell you that is not the way to be happy.
The key to happiness is simply setting appropriate short and long terms goals and making the choice to be happy as one works towards the accomplishment of those goals! Since "the best" is a subjective term, there's no reason we can't all have the best puppy in the world.
A few notes concerning the star of this video:
The English Mastiff is a breed of large dog. National kennel clubs, including the United Kingdom's Kennel Club and the American Kennel Club, refer to the breed as simply the Mastiff. They perhaps descended from the ancient Alaunt and Pugnaces Britanniae, with a significant input from the Alpine Mastiff in the 19th century. Distinguished by its enormous size, massive head, short coat in a limited range of colours, and always displaying a black mask, the Mastiff is noted for its gentle and loving nature. The lineage of modern dogs can be traced back to the early 19th century, but the modern type was stabilised in the 1880s and refined since. Following a period of sharp decline, the Mastiff has increased its worldwide popularity. Throughout its history the Mastiff has contributed to the development of a number of dog breeds, some generally known as mastiff-type dogs, or, confusingly, just as "mastiffs"
With a massive body, broad skull and head of generally square appearance, it is the largest dog breed in terms of mass. It is on average slightly heavier than the Saint Bernard, although there is a considerable mass overlap between these two breeds. Though the Irish Wolfhound and Great Dane can be more than six inches taller, they are not nearly as robust.
The body is large with great depth and breadth, especially between the forelegs-which causes these to be set wide apart. The length of the body taken from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock is greater than the height at the withers. The AKC standard height (per their website) for this breed is 30 inches (76 cm) at the shoulder for males and 27.5 inches (70 cm) (minimum) at the shoulder for females. A typical male can weigh 150-250 pounds (68-113 kg), a typical female can weigh 120-200 pounds (54-91 kg), with very large individuals reaching 300 pounds (140 kg) or more.I hope you guys enjoy!

Stonnie Dennis As someone who did the online dog training course I can not recommend it it enough people! The videos are great, the journaling process is a great way to track progress and to reflect on your training, and of course Stonnie’s feedback is was prompt and terrific. Now I have a one year old lab who I get compliments on all the time because he is so well behaved. I was just thinking our my walk last night that the quarantine would’ve actually been the perfect time to do the online training. I can’t recommend this course enough!

2:33 The "Go on nerd" and dismissal of the eager Malinois showing off while the Mastiff is struggling was hilarious, really made me laugh out loud. I never thought of the Malinois like the kid in class that always has their hand up, ready and excited to give the answer while the teacher gives a question to a student who is still working out the problem or is more shy to talk in class.
Also, I completely agree with the philosophy you explain in this video. My girl, a Great Pyrenees rescue, is also the best dog in the world. I absolutely love her, she works really hard in training, loves to go on hikes with me, and we have the most wonderful adventures together. She is gentle with both people and dogs, and every time we work together and learn together she makes me so proud.

Well said! I have a Boerboel service dog (South African mastiff), and my expectations for her were that she’d be calm, stoic, and honestly ... a little lazy. However, she is one of the most easily trained dogs that I have ever worked with and her work ethic is incredible! We compete in Rally obedience and she can hold her own against the goldens, border collies, and labs!! AND she saves my life on a daily basis - what more could I ask for?!?

I had a rescued German Shep mix who passed away a couple years ago, he was easily the best puppy + best grown dog I've ever known- I've never known a smarter, more easily trainable dog (I'm sure that was the Sheppard in him!). He never had an accident indoors his entire life, and he picked up tricks so fast that I eventually started looking for silly elaborate tricks on Google to teach him, like to roll over and play dead when I make a gun with my hand and say "Bang! You're dead!", or to fetch the TV remote.
He was also a total sweetheart who loved playing and cuddling more than anything, and never met a human or dog he didn't love. He even would sit and whine at the window at the squirrels and birds in the yard, because he wanted to go play with them!
And now in a week and a half, I'll be getting an English Mastiff puppy. I'm prepared for a much different experience, but this video gave me some hope in that regard!
I really appreciate hearing this. I’m training my first dog as an adult, and I find my expectations aren’t always met, and I get frustrated with myself and my puppy. So, I really appreciated hearing this. I have a smart standard poodle puppy that loves everyone and is so excitable. She is so good and doing well with much of her training, but I need to not worry and fret so much about how she gets so excited and jumps and makes mistakes sometimes... 1. She’s still only 11 months old, 2. She’s is naturally excited and loves everyone 3. I’m a new trainer/owner... I should be grateful for her sweet fun disposition and just keep working on it patiently with her and me. Thanks for the encouragement! She is the best puppy to me and my husband! :)
I like that you have expectations for certain breeds. Some people expect that every dog can be a Malinois or a German shepherd. I have an Alabai I know that boy will never be a Malinois, he’ll never focus like one, he’ll never do everything exactly as he’s told. They’re a breed designed to work on their own having someone tell them what to do and when to do it is not in their nature. Mine knows sit, stay, follow, come 80% of the time, focus, wait, and walks on a leash really well and I’m more than happy with that. He’s also not attached to me at the hip and constantly begging for attention which I really enjoy. Different dogs for different purposes and different folk.
THere is a video out there with an English Mastiff on an obstacle course. It is pretty funny because he did the course... At his own pace. Stonnie's comment that you have to judge a dog by the breed is so appropriate.
I am so glad you have addressed the differences in the different breed characteristics, behaviors & temperaments. So many people who want a dog don't take these most important factors into consideration. A lot of people want a specific breed because 'HE LOOKS COOL, ETC. That is just wrong. Great demonstration of the differences between.a Malinois & an Old English MASTIFF.
It's like my current MOBILITY ASSISTANCE SERVICE DOG is an English MASTIFF BULLMASTIFF cross. He is most certainly NOT a 'HIGH-DRIVE, HIGH-ENERGY, BALL ADDICTED, ZOOMY FREAK. When I toss a toy for him to retrieve, he gives me that unmistakable 'side-eye look' before he goes to get it. He brings it back & gives it to me, then I toss it again. Now he just looks at me like I'm stupid then reluctantly trots off to get it & gives it back to me. THEN, if I really push my luck, I toss it for a third time. Now he just sits down with a look of total disgust on his face & I swear I can actually HEAR him saying to me - 'I"M NOT GOING TO GO GET THAT FOR YOU BECAUSE YOU CLEARLY DON'T WANT IT! I BROUGHT IT BACK & GAVE IT TO YOU THEN YOU JUST THREW IT AWAY AGAIN SO YOU OBVIOUSLY DON'T WANT IT. SINCE YOU DON'T WANT IT, I WON'T GO GET IT FOR YOU AGAIN! I"M GOING TO LAY DOWN & TAKE A NAP NOW!'
HONESTLY, if he retrieves a toy 3 times, he has set a world record. Basically, his assessment of a situation is such that if HE DOESN'T SEE THE LOGIC IN IT, WELL THEN, THERE IS NO LOGIC TO IT & HE IS NOT DOING THAT AGAIN!
That seems to sum up the typical temperament character of the English Mastiff but then there are the OBSESSIVE, COMPLETELY ADDICTED TO 'FETCH GAMES' BREED TYPES WHO WILL LITERALLY. RETRIEVE THAT SAME TOY ALL DAY!! FOCUSED ISN'T THE WORD IT'S MORE LIKE 'FIXATED' & there is nothing wrong with that either if that's what fits with YOUR TEMPERAMENT, YOUR FAMILY'S TEMPERAMENT, YOUR LIFESTYLE.
My English Mastiff, Willow, is the "best dog ever!" I love this breed of lap dog... even if they don't fit.
I so loved watching this, Homer is just like Willow at that age. She is pretty active for an EM, she can even catch a frisbee... two or three time, lol. I am so happy that I found this breed. She goes with me to stores pretty regular, and she enjoys meeting people and getting rubs as much as they love meeting her.
Got it Stonnie! There are no bad dogs! And your point about supporting local businesses - well taken. We run our own farm and we realize the difficulties that local farmers are facing. We have some tough times ahead. Bless you Stonnie.

I spent months on youtube preparing for my new puppy, spent thousands of dollars on professional trainers after he arrived, and diligently invested work in the park daily without fail...and after 4 months with him I’m just so frustrated with his performance.
I will try to change my expectations for the sake of our relationship.
This gives me so much hope and realistic expectations for the Pyrenees we'll be getting soon. He's never going to be like a German Shepherd and I'm ok with that! If anything, I've realized that he's exactly what I've been looking for in a dog.

Homer has his SKILLS. You advocate for getting a dog for YOUR lifestyle or needs. PIck the wrong one and you might have problems- -something that gets a lot of dogs discarded or rehomed. I loved my Bullmastiff, he was perfect for my needs and a loving pet.

I’m so glad you made this video. I learned this lesson years ago when I switched from Labs and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers to giant breeds; especially Great Pyrenees and Saint Bernards. They’re just all unique and as owners we need to understand it.

Stonnie, what an awesome video! I'm a professional petsitter who specializes with "problem" dogs. (Rotties, Mastiffs, GSD's). They are all wonderful dogs once you figure out their needs.
I just read where to find out more. I also really appreciate how all your dogs aren't border collies or border collie mixes. I have a channel I watch and find many of their ideas helpful but I just know my yellow lab isn't wired up the same way. He's 22 weeks now. I'm grateful I was able to go to some classes before the quarantine started and really focused on socializing him with other dogs, new situations and people. It's tougher now. I'm working on fetching now and strive to follow your advice for the number of reps and number of times/day to practice. Also, we quit when things are going good! We're fortunate to have trainers like you to follow!

thanks for the great video. I had a lot of trouble getting my Belgian to retrieve the dumbbell. He hated it! So after much trial and error I thought I would give him a choice. I put 5 things out, including the dumbbell and a couple of toys he likes and a scent article. Sent him out to retrieve [he does retrieve various things just hated dumbbell] but let him choose. Of course, he chose a toy he liked and then went back for each of the others one by one and still didn't pick up dumbbell. This went on for a while and finally he picked up dumbbell with a doomed expression! Long story short, he is now retrieving it happily and working toward retrieving over the jump. It was really when I decided to respect him as someone who had ideas of his own as an individual that the breakthrough came. Somehow, respecting the dog's feelings about the dumbbell made the difference. By the way, I used clicker etc. with little success as he really had developed an aversion to the dumbbell for some unknown reason [we checked for broken teeth and everything possible].
That's one of the best bits of advice I've ever heard from a YT dog trainer ... I absolutely adore English Mastiffs, their gentle characters are just a joy to be around ... The one huge downside to owning on is their life span is sadly woefully short

Mastiffs are the best dogs. We just picked up our brindle English mastiff girl puppy last week. Its our second mastiff, we lost our 1st one to cancer at just 4 years old and immediately went and got another one because we knew we couldn't live without a mastiff in our lives. They have the absolute best personalities, calm and quite.
Such a great video! Comparing a malsnois to an English Mastiff is like comparing a Ferrari to a Sherman Tank - both are amazing at what they do. I live seeing an English Mastiff! Mine is 4 months of awesome and is learning really quickly, he's just a 'self thinker' like all guardian breeds.

My puppy is the craziest puppy ever! He is a GSP/Border Collie mix. I can't decide which side of his DNA is winning but it's an adventure every day!

that is the first puppy mastif i have ever seen, he is a handsome boy my kind of dog not to fast any more like me, i,m disabled now use to be realy active but not any more i had 4 widow maker heart attacks and a stroke, my 2 dogs are great, one listens to me and the only part time listens but they are mine, just found your channel and subbed and thumbs - up,, be strong, be safe, and be blessed

You have a natural affinity with animals which shines through in your videos. Great voice as well. I'm glad you produced this vid because it explains different breed expectations when it comes to training which many trainers just simply don't tell people about, full kudos to you.

When perusing TH-cam a simple way to figure out what to watch is to look for people who consistently use the same system to train lots of different types of dogs, in a wide variety of circumstances.
There’s so much content nowadays, I know it can be overwhelming to separate the wheat from the chaff.
Thank you for this video, Stonney. We just adopted what we think is a Mastiff/Lab or Mastiff/golden mix, and he is an awesome pup. You’re right, he’s very sensitive, very gentle, very good at pattern recognition but can be a bit stubborn so we are working on improving our own training style and approach, because he is just an awesome dog. Very sweet with other dogs and animals, will fetch for 2-3 times, loves tug-of-war, and enjoys training sessions. He has incredible focus, it’s just working on the motivation and inspiration. But we have been using a lot of your training methods from your TH-cam videos and we think we have been blessed with a really great dog, and combined with your awesome positive training approach, he has been really good to train!

my kubla south african mastiff is the most gentle and best dog in the history of dogs. he doesnt know many special tricks but he can relax, and cuddle, hike, swim (a little but its really clompy and splashy its so funny), catch frisbees, play ball, tug of war, flirt pole...he just tries his best at everything ive ever exposed him to and we both have fun...now his son is a different beast, he likes to do everything his way...we will have to teach him he is 11wks old right now...

What a fabulous video!
I had an English mastiff years ago. Best dog I ever had. When puppies they are not real energetic as they tend to put most of their energy into growth. The times you can see them move fast is when they decide there is a threat to their family and they go into their protective mode. Dog was extremely easy to train and very obedient. If I get another dog it will be an English mastiff. Great dog to keep in the house, very calm and protective.

Jessica I totally agree.. I have one myself and love him to bits.. however, they need structured training and continual mental and physical stimulation..so that can be a challenge.. people must understand this breed before thinking of getting one..

Thanks to you, my black lab is the best dog in the world. I started watching your videos a few months before I even thought of a breed. I have had her now for 2.5 years. She's been trained for search and rescue. So far, she has "rescued" cats that have wandered off...but that's ok. She's the best! Fani is my best friend and a marvelous companion. Your techniques do work, but the owner must be consistent.
Well done Stonnie. I've been researching breeds for 2 years now (4 young kids and I'm leaning towards breeds with some protection and presence, so no rush). Thanks for reminding me that breed is only the beginning, and it's up to me to bring out the best in our dog and let him or her the best they can be in our family situation, nothing more. I mean I knew that already but the way you say it really hits the point home. Very important and well articulated message on expectations.

My two stinkers are half English Mastiff and half Shar-Pei. Their behavior is mostly mastiff-ish except when it comes to water, where they confirm every rumor of Shar-Peis hating water. So when they were around four months old, I figured 'Imma fix that'. Bought a kiddie pool, filled it halfway, baited rubber duckies with hot dog pieces, and sat back to see what would happen. No sugar paw got wet that day, no hot dog was eaten, and the pool never became more than the outdoor water bowl.
Good thing we live in the south, because our bathtime consists of a sunny day, a bucket of water, and a stiff brush; with one foot firmly planted on the leash.

Stonnie I had a Mastiff years ago he was by far my favorite dog I ever had. Today I have 2 labs 1 black and 1 chocolate I watched your video that talked about all labs want to be black. My chocolate female is what i would consider the ultimate lab. I think with the right trainer she could win field trials. My black lab on the other hand is well kind of a jerk. He does what he wants to do and has the drive to do it. Problem with him everything he wants to do most people would consider it bad behavior. I find him hilarious most of the time. Oh that new wolverine rmax looks awesome by the way. You will have to take it down to LBL.
