    Allready seen Winston on GWTD, he's among my favorites on her channel. I used to have a golden retriever. He was also very chill and quiet, and that's exacly what I'd look for in a dog if I ever were to get another one.

      @@theemanfamily His name was Oscar and his personality was quite similar to Winstons. He was also quite large for his breed, almost 90 pounds. I remember that I asked the breeder to give me the laziest, most laid back puppy he had and that's exactly what I got 😄 Sadly we had to let him go three years ago because his hip and shoulder joints were so messed up that he could barely walk anymore. Anyway, best whishes from Germany!

    Have owned 4 mastiffs, 2 males and 2 females, fawns and black brindles. The bigger the better. Best dogs ever! Not for a novice owner, but great therapy/companion dogs who will be very protective of their people. Perfect companion to my elderly mother who was a stroke victim. Must love drool and have a big bank account to cover costs. Mine would let people in, but not let them out.😉 Looked like young lions moving and would silently sneak up quickly and take prey/people down from behind. Great big cuddle bugs to their people.

      @theemanfamily  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is so sweet! So sorry to hear about your mom’s health issues but so happy that she has quite the companion! We are actually novice owners, which is why we were big on prioritizing the pup’s temperament (and the parent’s temperament) more than anything, because we were hyper aware of our limits. Sometimes I pretend Winston is Simba 😂😂😂 they pretty much move the same and equally as lazy.

    I myself have a very large 270 pound English Mastiff. It's a nice description of living with and raising such a dog, and I can recognize the description of the mind. I don't quite agree that he is not a watchdog. What I experience is that he is aware of everything that happens, he investigates himself if he is in doubt, but he almost never bark. "There's usually no reason to get us involved in it if it wasn't anything anyway"😉

    • @theemanfamily
      @theemanfamily  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is a good point, we have never been in a situation of being in danger in our own home (thank goodness) and would rather not test it of course. Winston pretends he is so dopey but his canine instincts are truly impressive. One time he got *almost* attacked by an off leash doodle while he was walking with me and my baby. He stood in front of us, showed his chest and stood his ground despite the doodle lunging at him. Was so proud of him in that moment-he simply knew how to defend us, and didn’t need to make a big scene about it.

    My Mastiff, Annie, ran agility when she was quite young. When she got too big, I attempted to train her for the obedience ring. She looked at me like I was crazy - walk at your knee, sit when you stop, not me. I like to run and jump and make my own decisions. So we started nose work. She is fantastic. And everyone who meets her, loves her. I’ve had lots of dogs, mostly Doberman Pinchers. But she is the best dog I’ve ever loved. She is very bonded to me but knows when she should accept a stranger. I’d never get a different breed now, in spite of the drool.

    Xena, is the Exact Opposite of Winston. Extremely athletic, HATES CATS, (eaten several of em) proactive to the point of aggression at times- strangers come to door....and loves bier. I attribute the aggression to Death Wish the cat. DW and here kittens, bang on windows, rattle pans and drive Xena into a rage. Quite comical actually. Then there is the poop. Need I say more? Xena is a female, Duh, around 160 lb, and puts up with two long legged terriers Jack Russel X Pit. My first English Mastiff, and I say the combo of Mastiff and Terriers is jolly, Unless you are a cat or a stranger.

    I have never even thought about EMs until I saw Winston being groomed.
    Now I hope that I'll be able to have one, or at least get to know one!
    I am not allowed to have pets where I live, and honestly, Winston would look comically oversized in my tiny attic flat XD
    And I obviously wouldn't ever get a pet on a whim after watching just a couple of endearing videos!!!
    But from what you've said about Winston, at least, it sounds like a breed that could be a good fit for me, personality wise.
    But that is a probably very distant future for me, because I have never had ANY dogs, and my only experience taking care of dogs, is my cousin's Icelandic Sheepdog, so for now, I must simply love on the winsome Winston!

      Honestly we waited a long long time for Winston too, we wanted to absolutely be sure and give our dog the best life possible. I’m glad you are also making that decision. He is our first and although many will discourage you from getting them as a first timer, if you’re willing to put in the work or invest in professional training (plus you gotta pick a really great breeder), they are honestly the perfect first dog. They are so easy going and really just love to cuddle!

      Thank you for responding to me..!!!!
      And for not saying that I HAVE to have owned another dog first, if I am just willing to put in the work needed to train both the dog and myself.
      I'm currently a student, so nowhere near a financial position to even buy an EM, nevermind keep one!
      But yeah... Maybe one day in the distant future, I will have both the finances, space, and time to have one...
      To be fair, though, I have never met one. Not sure if I have ever even seen one irl. I live in Norway, and Idk how common EMs are here. I'm sure there's some, at least!!!! It would be really nice to meet one in person and get a "real life" impression!

    RESEARCH is so important, even when adopting a rescue, when getting ANY pet. You want to make sure you have the funds, time, patients and enthusiasm to meet their needs. I volunteer at a rescue and youd be shocked by the number of dogs (especially puppies) that get returned because people weren't prepared for the time and patience a puppy/new dog takes. Most dogs end up at the rescue because as a puppy they're cute...and they become a dog and people lose interest. They're a years long commitment and it will be SO much more enjoyable for owner and pet if they're a good match.

      @theemanfamily Four years ago my neighbor, a single guy, got one, Gunner. He was the cutest puppy and such a good boy. He likes to play with my dachshund. He never barks. He's so gentle and sweet. My neighbor has done a great job training him 😊 He takes him hunting and fishing with him. He is hands down the most beautiful dog I've ever seen. He's blue 💙 😍
      Sadly, you're right. We're going to see more of them. Lately I've noticed more pocket pitties and frenchies lately at breed specific rescues mostly. Dumped after done breading or they're special needs pups from bad breeding.

    I think that these sorts of really mellow, friendly, responsive dogs do have some deeper instincts reserved for those rare, truly dangerous situations. They might let someone come in and walk off with everything. But if someone got violent, they would just lay them out and be back to normal immediately afterwards. My friends have a German Shepherd like this, and alone on the porch, she "went off" once. By the time they got there to see what had happened, she was back to normal. And their only conclusion was that someone was actually sneaking around or testing the door locks. They never even got to see her do that or heard her get aggro again.

    • @theemanfamily
      @theemanfamily  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you’re absolutely right! I think the little things don’t bother them much, they’re so unfazed but if true danger were to come they’ve got the instincts. I definitely don’t wanna test it out on Winston and I hope to God no other human or animal tries him either!

    Did you consider a Boerboel? I am thinking an English mastiff or a Boerboel - both seem to be sweet dogs when socialized right, just a little healthier with the Boerboel and a little more compact. Is drool an issue?

    • @theemanfamily
      @theemanfamily  17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Never considered a Boerboel only because we were dead set on the English Mastiff pretty much, and we hadn’t done much research on SA Mastiffs specifically. All I’ve seen online is you need tons of training for both. Winston’s trainer actually owns/has rescued/trained a number of Boerboels and all are sooo sweet, their faces especially melt our hearts. I think Boerboels drool less than EMs but ever since we switched Winston to raw food he has drooled significantly less!

      @@VelvetDraginfly this just made me tear up, so sorry you had to lose your best friend that way. We are extra protective of Winston for this reason, everyone always thinks they can just leave their kids alone with our dog and don’t discipline their kids, and if he had had enough and did something to defend himself I’m sure he would be the one to pay the price (even though he’s very tolerant, but we never know what they’re thinking). It’s so unfair, I wish more people taught their kids about how to act around animals. Something I instil in my kids is to respect animals because they can literally hurt humans if they wanted to, but they choose to be kind, so we should show them the same respect.

Yes, he is a “petite” mastiff we like to call him 🥹. I was actually pregnant for the first time when he was just a puppy and we matched up in weight for awhile and once I gave birth, it’s like he also stopped gaining weight hahaha! It worked out perfectly for us because with small kids it would do even bigger damage if he was a lot heavier. He’s not the perfect “standard”, but he is our perfect boy! Great question! He is great with other dogs and no, we do not take him to the dog park. We do not want to accidentally create a reactive dog (especially because he is such a target for many other dogs who are much smaller than him-somehow they just love to jump and lunge and growl at him, probably because his sheer size is intimidating or exciting to others). Needless to say, he would never hurt a fly but we also wouldn’t want him to accidentally hurt another dog by stepping on them etc. He plays in a controlled environment with other like-minded/balanced dogs or he goes on structured walks with other dogs!

    Another thing a dog like this one should for nature be a fearless dog, but at the same time having the balanced temperament, mine for example always since the first months did very well with kids, but at the same time I always try to maintein the alpha male of the dog.
    Hope you dont get offended with this comment, but the exercise is so important and you only go once a day ? the must of the health problems that this dogs have is because of the weight, trust me go for big walks like 1 hour, twice a day, in different environments, and your dog is going to love.
