I had a cat that was water proof like that, he'd sit in pouring rain shacking his head, not realizing it was also getting onto his coat, until it finally got through the deepest layer then he'd come in jump on my bed shake like a dog then lay down.

An 8 hour trip, 5 hour appointment, 8 hour trip back... that's 21 hours for Wally!
That's probably 2 weeks in Tibetan Mastiff time
No wonder he fell asleep. 😅
Plus gas, hotel stay etc. lol
He behaved so well considering it was so many hours and so much to be done
He just went to sleep after some time :D

Really amazing, given what his owners said about his dog aggression and protective nature. Dogs know when people love them and are helping.
That dog didn't give AF. Pardon my language.
I love how Wally's general mood is "this is my life now"
Do with me what you will... but just don't make me get up
As an owner of a rescue, my dog was the most spoiled one I had. When we first got her, she'd lunge at the dinner table never knowing when she'd get her next meal. She fought for whatever she could, and you had to respect it. By the end, she'd just look at you and expose her belly. She wouldn't even move or get up. She knew that you'd go to her with snacks, and belly rubs. She had the GOOD LIFE.
Oh Wally, you’re the best!

While you don't "want" shave a doubled coat dog, sometimes you just have no choice. He looked adorable when you were done and the bounce in his steps looked like he was given relief. Being able to help him and his hoomans is fantastic. Great community Vanessa. All because your personality, love and caring nature shine through what you do.
Plus, while his coat might not work the way it should anymore, giving his fur a fresh start is going to give his parents a fighting chance at keeping his coat maintained now. They seem dedicated enough that they'll do their best to make sure he's never matted like that again!

@@Brynnthebookworm With luck, after a couple of years growing his coat back and removing his shedding undercoat when it's supposed to, it may get to the way it's supposed to work.

It's the difference before and after, when he comes in at the start of the video he's slow, lethargic, panting, over-heating. After the shave he's running around like a pup. He's obviously a lot happier when he's cooler, he needs a snowy mountain range to live in.
For having such a fierce reputation, Wally is one laid back dude. I love when she was trimming his huge Grinch feet, and Wally was just snoozing away without a care in the world anymore. Great video Vanessa!

I loved that dog sleeping while you groomed him. ❤️
Wally's coat is, like you said, INSANE! What I find most amazing about this dog is how, when you were bathing him, the undercoat refused to get as wet as the top coat, but during the drying process, the undercoat was still dripping after two bloody hours! And you were grooming him for five hours! That is INTENSE!

For a dog that was neglected, he is amazingly calm with the whole grooming process. His new family is wonderful for with they did.
Wally was not motivated by food, interestingly. Perhaps like elephants, Wally allowed help from smart people and knew when to allow their efforts. It frightens one to think of him in a cage.

Not saying they're all the same, but my sister's dog is a rescue from Mexico and he's also the calmest-looking we've ever seen (and we grew up with dogs). Even when stressed out (he hates baths) he won't do anything. I think it's because of the trauma. Like humans that suffered from cptsd, maybe they just don't want to disappoint? It's not "status" hon it's that a properly maintained double coat is the best protection a dog can get. This dog, sadly, has a coat that's too damaged from his past to keep right now. The owners were awesome for giving his coat the best chance they could, even if it didn't work out.

From what I've read in my Lhasa Apso breed books, Tibetan Mastiffs were used at monasteries as part of a two-pronged dog protection system against burglaries. Outside the monastery door would be a Tibetan Mastiff tied to a spit with a rope--the purpose of which was to attack any burglars and make a big noise if a burglar came, but otherwise to be quiet. If the burglar got past that dog, then inside the monastery were the Lhasa Apsos who were trained to NEVER bark during meditation sessions but ALWAYS bark for strangers--they would be the alarm dogs of last resort.

Secondly, the Tibetan Mastiff is an ANCIENT breed, this information is available online. Meaning it was likely bred before written history existed, considering dogs were first domesticated about 40,000 years ago and written history didnt exist until about 3400BC. So, like she says in the video, no one knows what Tibetan Mastiffs were ORIGINALLY bred for. @Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
Wally came out looking so cute. Probably so much more comfortable and has more energy... Maybe😊
This was absolutely amazing to watch. You are so very good at what you do. Wally is such a beautiful creature & it makes me so happy that he’s been rescued & is being cared for now. Bless his rescuer’s (his new mom & dad) hearts. ❤ At the end when he was lying down, he looked like a lion. Thank you for all you do to care for the fur babies in our world! xo
The transformation was jaw dropping. The effort you put in was HEROIC. Wally was a sweetheart--couldn't help but subscribe to Wally's channel. What a video!
Hello, I hope you're safe over there? I hope this year brings happiness, prosperity, and love all over the world, I would love us to be good friends in honesty and in trust if you don't mind. I'm Doctor Christopher Johnson from San Francisco, California, where are you from if I may ask?
In the end, that was less grooming and more sheep-shearing! You did a great job with him, and I'm sure he feels so much better now.

I had the same thought!
Yes main thing he feels much better now ❤
Thank you for using your amazing skills and expertise to help these wonderful dogs
Such a beautiful dog. So glad he was rescued.
You went from a 'Dog groomer' to an official 'Sheep shearer ' at some point during this experience....just wow!!!
😮
Aww!!! His happy walk at the end of the video proves how comfortable and light-weighted he is feeling after the removal of all that matting. You did an amazing job, Vanessa!!❤
What a amazing job you are so kind
❤this might be my favorite, so relaxing to watch, you're a great person to do this work 🙌
It's very cool seeing how dog grooming can be as much about their health as it can be about how they look. Such important work you're doing.
There's a whole history behind it all. It's really interesting! The traditional cuts for most breeds are actually functional haircuts. The thick eyebrows lots of terrier breeds have helps to protect their eyes from attacking vermin and the silly looking poodle cut is meant to keep the dog's internal organs warm in the water but streamline the shaved areas for better swimming. Keeping a dog well groomed, whether show cut or "pet" cut, is (or should be) 100% for their own health with the exception of fashion haircuts like the "teddy bear" cut.
That monstrosity of a cut ruins Pomeranian coats and can have a detrimental effect on the dog's health. It completely shaves the outer guard layer of water resistant hair, leaving behind the soft, fine undercoat of warming hair that gives a dog zero protection against the elements once it gets wet and isn't great against harsh sun either. Presumably, having a double coat, Wally is much the same and that's why they wanted to try to save as much of his coat as possible though it does differ breed to breed. Sometimes it doesn't grow back well. I'm sure Vanessa could probably explain it much better.
She'd likely make a much better job of my dog's (functional) ear trim too. No high fashion here. Poor dog looks like she lost an arguement but it helps keep her ears dry and infection free...and I love her no matter how scruffy she looks. :)
