I need to try that trick for the shark rig, the rig I used was just a bigger catfish rig and I kept losing my bait. I did hook something big eventually on a whiting head with a 6/0 hook but it got off on the way in.
I have total respect for the humble bluefish. Not to eat so much as just their attitude. You put food in front of them, they will eat it. Then they will give you a fight no matter how small they are. Very honest fish.
All Ive got to say is... Wow. What a cool place to live. Wifey got to spend 3 months there house sitting for good friends. I got to visit a handful of times. You ride your beat up old beach bike everywhere! to the store, to the beach, to get ice cream! Fishing is pretty good. The ICW has alot of potential. Southport! Waiting for our place to be completed out near swansboro. But Ill tell ya what... If I could do it again????????? Island life baby! Thanks Ian
I was just down last week. Caught a 3-4 footer black-tip in the ICW off fresh cut bait and then another 4 footer that evening off the surf. First time catching sharks that size, can't believe it happened twice in the same day. They put up a fight!
Thanks for the video and channel. I stumbled on your page as I was getting excited about my trip to Oak Island before the Fourth of July. Appreciate your food reviews too. Wish you had this one up earlier as this exactly how I ended up set up by the time I left except that I used a sputnik weight for my shark/wire rig. Keep 'em rolling
Na never be upset about catching a croaker, it’s definitely the best live bait to catch HUGE fish. Not shark big but it’s the best for tarpon and snook! But these are the best rigs you can use, if your using live bait it’s always better to free line with no weight but if you have multiple rods than that is impossible to do.
That’s per day but you can get a week pass that I think should save you a little bit. All the beaches now are paid parking. Except Caswell but you better go there early
Argh! Swimmers. I feel your pain. At my beach I'll setup to fish away from everyone. Sometimes completely alone on the beach. Never fear, a swimmer or wader will come from nowhere and be right in the way, oblivious to my lines. Thanks for the video.
Always a pleasure to see a new video from you. My question for you... I use to fish 3 rods in the surf... but after doing some checking it looks like you can only use 2... then again I see where you can use 3 but must be different rigs... even seen a 2 rod restriction if you are using a double dropper... what is the actual regulation.... all the conflicting information I'm getting is making my head hurt. I like your shark rig. It's a little different from the one I tie... will have to make a few and test them out.
As for the shark rig, I picked that up (aka stole it) from a Tackle Tuesday video by a guy out of Florida. As for rod restrictions in the surf, never heard of that. I think the pier has restrictions though. I usually only use 2 rods. That’s enough to keep me busy :)
I actually have a pretty heavy braid, I think 40 lb test. But I sometimes use those reels for shark fishing. I think 25 would be more than enough for most fish caught in the surf. I bet some might say even that is a bit heavy.
I didn’t at first which is what I didn’t like about it. So while on the beach, I tied it to the line so it didn’t slide. Not a great way to do it but it worked in a pinch.
Hooks for double drop, I go small, 1/0 or 1. For the second rig, 3/0 is fine for small minnows. For the shark rig, I use a 5/0. Leader for double drop, 10 lb mono is fine. I go a little heavy on the middle rig, probably 25 lb but that could be lighter.

Cant wait! Will be there in a few weeks.

I’ve always liked Swansboro. We used to stay on Emerald Island back in the day. Great fishing out there!
Awesome video sands.
Please demonstrate a video handline casting in surf

Thanks.I was trying to get it out earlier but I was having a hard time getting out to go fishing. Plus the sharks weren’t participating lol

I will be there next week! Heard parking is $20 now but that won’t hurt after the first fish is caught 😊

Nice video Ian!
Thank you! Hope all is well

Nice rigs. Yeah, hauling in a sting ray is like reeling in a bag of bricks. But whiting are right tasty.

Hi Ian. great video. Love your channel. Maybe I missed it, but what lb. line did you get spooled on your reel there?

Great video
If I may - how did you keep the weight from going all the way down to the float on the second rig?

LOL that knot is fuct but dual purpose
No details😢😢😢 about hook size and line size...
