The reason they’re still around is they’re small and cheap. They can be used as picket ships and anti-pirate craft. Also as commercial vessel escorts. Maybe they can be refitted with artificial gravity, not only making the crew more comfortable, but also lightening the ship for better acceleration and maneuvering.
For such a small and relatively ineffective vessel she didn't have too bad a service life. From the Dilgar war through the war with the Minbari and saw the formation of the ISA......not bad for a glorified gunboat.
I wonder if that last ship was the original Olympus? Maybe it was re-fitted over the years, after surviving many conflicts and being held as a testament to its longevity and it was given new and improved systems to prolong its service. It would be nice to think its crew (over the years) were descendants from the very first voyage. Maybe heeding the lesson from the failed first contact with the Minbari, it became an ambassador's ship. Wow, I wish J. Micheal would write at least one story about her legacy and those who served aboard her...
Too bad J. Micheal is done with writing for B5 and concentrating on the re-boot of Capt. Power. I'd love to know the story behind the Olympus that was present during the deactivation and scuttling of the B5 [station]. Maybe it served in all the major conflicts. I'd bet there would have been some good stories in there!
“Small” here is a relative term. Compared to the nearly 2km Omega, yes it’s small. But 400 meters is still longer than most of or wet navy ships. WW2 battleships houses thousands of crew members. Why would 87 feel cramped, especially when every surface could be usable in zero-g?
It is also longer and bulkier than some trek ships, and respectable in settings like Star Wars, Mass Effect and Stargate. It is definitely small in Halo, 40k, StarCraft and Galactica though
Diana Vespid yeah, but it should be judged by its relative size in its own universe. 400 m is actually very large in, say, Sword of the Stars, where destroyers are 30 m long, cruisers are 90 m, and dreadnoughts (who can easily lay waste to planets) are 270 m.
Final episode. Happens just after Sheridan vanishes, so it’s fitting. No one uses the station anymore, since IA moves it’s capital to Minbar and Earth doesn’t want to foot the bill anymore. Ivanova says in a voiceover that there wouldn’t be another Babylon station.
My microphone isn't good and my accent doesn't help. I had to choose between: Narrate and sound strange and difficult to understand. OR Put a robotic voice in the video that everyone would understand.
Yes, i will. I also want to do videos about B5 technology such as the nature of Hyperspace, Plasma pulse weapons, particles beams, energy projectors, etc...
I don't like the way it ended to me somebody was well that should have bought Babylon 5 the station because I have gravity plating available after the war and be able to modify Babylon 5 clean it out overhaul it use it deep space
Seems too big for an ordinary station. It would also be a little difficult to add grav tech, since you’re supposed to use all the inner surface of the cylinder, not one particular “floor”.
Babylon 5 was scuttled mostly for political reasons. It was stated in the final episode that the abandoned station would be a "threat to navigation" if it remained where it was, but this was an excuse. The reality was more complex. Babylon 5 was too small to be the base of operations for an organization as large as the Interstellar Alliance, so the headquarters of the ISA was moved to Minbar as soon as the facilities could be built. Once this was done, the Babylon station no longer served a practical purpose. It was, by design, pretty far away from the core territories of the major races. Babylon 5 had to be in neutral territory in order for it not to be seen as favoring one race or another. People and businesses started leaving the station, and the operating budget could no longer be justified. It was also, presumably, impossible to move it to another world through the jumpgate. The station was nearly destroyed in 2257 after being briefly knocked out of its orbit by an internal explosion, so it is likely a hyperspace transition would be completely out of the question. Adding to the complexity of the situation was the position of the Earth Alliance where Babylon 5 was concerned. The station reverted to Earth Alliance custody after the Interstellar Alliance moved to Minbar, and it served as an uncomfortable reminder to Earth that the station had once been the base of John Sheriden's rebellion against President Clark; a conflict that took many human lives and split Earthforce between Sheriden's separatists and Clark's loyalists. Even those who opposed Clark politically thought Sheriden had gone too far in taking back Proxima III from loyalist forces, and many people continued to blame Sheriden - and by extension Babylon 5 itself - for needless loss of human life during the crisis. Earthdome wanted the painful reminder to go away and not serve as a rallying point for any potential dissident group of the future. So the station was rigged for scuttling, and the ISA, mindful of the lingering political resentment on Earth, chose not to protest the decision and held a decommissioning ceremony in the station's honor instead.

I still remember the feeling of watching a lonely Olympus going against a minbari fleet knowing was going to die. It served earth well.
Wow if there was ever a example of 'forlorn hope' then that was it.
@@PaxDeorum I've always wondered why the Earth Alliance never used frigates.

Always liked the Olympus
A reformed ship can make a good Merc ship
Very good !!!

Artem Bentsionov Or Space Battleship Yamato
For reference, a Space Shuttle is 122 ft (37 m) long, not counting the full launch stack. That’s bigger than a Sword of the Stars destroyer
Im suprised it cant carry more than one shuttle the Donnager from the expance can carry six 40m long combat ships.
I actually own to Surplus Olympic class Corvettes but without the weaponry
Why was B-5 blown up? The resources that went into building it would have been astronomical.
Never mind, answer below.
Wait. When was B5 decommissioned?
The last episode
Nice CGV, but needs a bit of tweaking for pronouncing "Mimbari", which comes out "Mimberry".
The voice synthesizer reads "Minbari" and speaks "Minberi". I had to add an "H" (minbahri) for him to speak correctly in the following videos.
Yep. Definitely sounds like 'Mimberry.'
where did you get this animations from? it looks like they would be from a RTS game.
celestiamotherlode.net
Earth - Minberry war ? I missed that one .
Shit, why was B5 blown up. Is this cannon.
Tony Smith yes
Final episode. Happens just after Sheridan vanishes, so it’s fitting. No one uses the station anymore, since IA moves it’s capital to Minbar and Earth doesn’t want to foot the bill anymore.

don't eat the memberries
These memberries are poisonous to humans....I had to make some adjustments on the synthesizer to pronounce correctly in other videos.
Fear the Minberi

Gotcha. Love the videos. Babylon 5 was my favorite series and has held up to the test of time. Are you going to be doing other races other than Earth?
Yes, i will. I also want to do videos about B5 technology such as the nature of Hyperspace, Plasma pulse weapons, particles beams, energy projectors, etc...

Memberries....are they the Future fruit !?
