    Dave, great video. I need to remember that as a professional carpenter for 30 years, I am always working out issues on the fly which are of course added to my quiver to use as needed or as the springboard for solving another problem. Sharing these "Problem Solvers" makes for great content and can save others a lot of time.

    This is thinking without spending . There are a few zero-gap systems out there involving replacement base plate , fence covers and so ; however this is fast and costs nothing . I bought a second clamp to lightly hold the cut piece ( 5.4mt/6yrd starter length ) from flipping up after cutting with a Bosch gravity stand that's limited rig-length . Now I've made your idea for zero . Thankyou 🙂

    Nice tips. Since I don't have a sliding miter saw and have a stationary 12" compound, I use a piece of 3/4" (19mm for the rest of the world) the same way with a pair of MatchFit clamps. Anything thicker and I'd lose cut capacity. Several groves at key places allow me to adjust it as needed to fit around the saw's aluminum fence.
    Some day I'll upgrade to a sliding miter saw.

    Great tip and SO simple to do. I like simple solutions. I'm going to do this on my Kapex 60. Will just have to work out the dimensions of the timber required for the smaller size saw.

    Great advise and good to see a kapex used properly, personally I would put a small rebate at the bottom for clearance of waste

    • @DavidStanton
      @DavidStanton  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sounds like a plan MrRodigan but I have found that rebates sometimes collect sawdust quietly as you are working away and next thing....I always clear the fence area prior to a cut.

    If you were to screw the to the fences that are on the kapex, firstly you can still slide them left to right with the clamps they have, and secondly you can free up the other clamps for clamping your work 👍

    • @DavidStanton
      @DavidStanton  ปีที่แล้ว

      That would work once or twice but when I change from 90 to 45 degrees I would end up loosing the zero clearance on both sides of the cut.

    An idea for further improvement. Cut near the top front face a slot in both pieces. Add t-track in the slot then add a clamp to the t-track. Now your piece to be cut is clamped by additional tracks.

    • @DavidStanton
      @DavidStanton  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it would work but my concern is it would put pressure on the kapex clamp and may move the block away from the kapex fence a little?

  • @rlevitta
    @rlevitta หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    My problem with having zero clearance on the fence is that when I have done it, the dust collection doesn't work because it's blocked by the zero clearance pieces. Actually, I've been disappointed with the dust collection on the Kapex all together.

    • @DavidStanton
      @DavidStanton  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Kapex dust collection. It can be frustrating when things don't work as expected, but your input is valuable for others in the community. But, you can't have a zero clearance fence and good dust control without an all encompassing hood.

      @@DavidStanton Unfortunately I don’t have room for one of those. The most I have been able to do is extend the existing scoop by adding duct tape to it.

    Dave, I enjoy your videos and always learn something new. Thanks for that. On this video I have a question but before that, I made a zero clearance insert actually more like 10. And I made several sacrificial fences but like you said. It take time to remove and reinstall 45, 22.5 or 0 degree. Anyway I like your idea of 55 by 80 mm instead and I already have a second clamp care of eBay. Now my question. I am getting a lot of sawdust I have a larger hose on the Kapex going to my Festool dust collector. I presently am using an 80 tooth blade made in China. My cuts are very clean with no tear out. Right now my original Kapex blade is out being sharpened. My Kapex saw and dust collector are 2015 vintage and a have a new bag inside the dust collector. Any suggestions?

Don't know whether its just me but I cannot find the hinged track assemble and the front height adjuster for the rail. Can you enlighten me where I can get these? Live in Tasmania Carbatec don't show them. Love your work BTW.

    Thanks Dave, I recently purchased a Kapex120 and absolutely love it. On a side note I was wondering about your dust collection for the saw? I noticed the saw is 1600watt and all the Festool vacuums say no more that 1200 watts? Do you have any overload problems or do you not use a Festool vacuum for dust control

    • @DavidStanton
      @DavidStanton  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dean. It comes down to complying with the Australian code, not the Dust extractors capacity to handle 1600 watts ontop of it's own requirements of 1200 watts. Ideally in Australia, 2400 watts is the max on a 10 amp power point. This is keeping everything very safe. But, a double gpo could have 2 electric jugs plugged into it, pulling 4000 watts and not have an issue. Newer homes have a 4800 watt circuit breaker on a 10 amp circuit and 2.5 mm twin and earth wiring in the walls. So you add up 1600 and whatever the ct unit draws and make your own judgement. If you have an older home and unsure about the wiring, get a sparky to look at it. But as far as the CT dust extractor's capacity to work with the kapex I havent had an issue in the 7 years I've been using the combo.

    Hello David, I am thinking of purchasing a new sliding compound miter saw. I currently have the 12” Dewalt and considering the Kapex. I watched your first review of the Kapex and was curious what your opibion of it is today many years later? There are other brands like Makita that have come out with new saws for half the cost. What is your opinion today?

    Yeah that's great Dave, but what about the Kapex ks 60? Can't believe Festool didn't design the same feature for clamps on this one. Dumbest design.
    I've been searching everywhere how to use those guide clamps on mine. There's just zero place for them.
    Fedtool need to start making zero clearance inserts for the Kapex ks 60. I hade to make mine. I made it from Acrylic, so that I can see if and when any debris needs cleaning.
    Do you have any ideas for the cordless kapex ks 60 please?
    Many thanks

      No you only have about 1/4" clearance between the fence and the clamp.
      I used bamboo that is very strong at that thickness. I don't know why I stopped using it other than remembering that it flexed a bit and having to reach around to free the fences. I like David's ingenious idea much better. hth

    Hi David, I bought a zero clearance fence system from a small company called Colliflower last week and installed it on my Kapex 120. It's really neat. Perhaps you'll find it interesting. I'll link their demo video here th-cam.com/video/COqBxTyuO4E/w-d-xo.html
    Cheers!
    (PS: Did you know you don't need to keep your thumb on the upper button all the way? It's only needed to start the blade during the first couple of seconds and you might find it more comfortable to only press the trigger during the rest of the cut.)

    • @DavidStanton
      @DavidStanton  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting method Muru Roa and I hope it serves you well. I doubt that the dust extraction will be as good with the sample you showed. My system which costs nothing, has a large area behind for the dust boot to still work efficiently. Also, depending on the compound mitre angle, I can easily make a shallower fence if needed, just another short piece out of the rack and I'm done, make them to suit the application. My idea will also work on any miter saw that has two clamping points.

    • @mururoa7024
      @mururoa7024 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DavidStanton Oh the dust extraction is horrible indeed, but I've build a hood + dust port behind the kapex, which captures most of it.
      I do think your method is very clever as well.
