There is this substitute teacher who used to teach at our school that knows how to make explosives. He has set off the fire alarm at our school a few times. He used to put this one type of explosive in his driveway on Halloween. After a while, it was a pain when there were little children as well as how dangerous the excess he had blew up when he wacked it with is shovel. It also blew up again in his hands. Luckily he felt pain through his protective gloves.

Since you mentioned it, can you mix molten salt with molten aluminum, and see what it looks like cooled? Maybe rinse it with water to dissolve the salt and see if it makes a cool texture?
