Pouring molten aluminum into liquid nitrogen and dry ice are my most requested videos, so today you finally get to see what happens!
Thanks to FLIR for sending me a real thermal camera to use in my videos, heres the camera I used bit.ly/FLIRONE. - บันเทิง

The chim or hum of the tin on the dry ice is due to the moment of the molecules in the dry ice. The metal is a solid and will not become any more solid then the state it's in the atoms are interlocked perfectly. The dry ice however is fluctuating between a solid and a gas (all but missing the liquid stage) this results in the atoms moving so fast under a pressure (the tin) it begins to resonate resulting in the sound.
Only a few years late on this but just for those who wanted to know.
This will happen with any solid material put on dry ice with pressure. We do the same thing between petri dishes in the lab I work in when we get a shipment that contains dry ice.
Portia Baskerville THANK YOU 🙏🏻
Youuuu answered my question. Thank you.
Was looking for this. Many thanks.
Was gonna like ur comment but it’s at 69 so we’ll keep it there
Good job for being smart (not being sarcastic)
Fun Fact, infrared can't penetrate through glass, it acts like a mirror instead! so if your robbing a bank bring a large sheet of glass to hide from the chopper.
What would you do with an infrared camera?
I would see how hot a average dickhead would be
+Theboss123 that's the most random comment I've seen today.
Whelp I was on my way to Robb a back to thanks
+Theboss123 compare the heat of erect vs. non erect
I would go ahead and tie it to a drone and fly it around
The tin chiming on the dry ice was EASILY the coolest thing I've seen in regards to metallurgy. I would never have known about it if not for this video!
+Freeze Dried Girolles I once read that Antimony does the same when it's cooling, but almost nowhere else mentions this.
+Freeze Dried Girolles It's called twinning. It can happen with pure rods when you bend them, also. The crystal structure is such that it will actually mirror itself when put under stress, which also makes it harden in the area of effect.
+Freeze Dried Girolles It also explains the phrase "tin ear" or "tinnitus" which I had wondered about until I watched this video. We certainly sometimes get a ringing in our ear that sounds just like that.
+GhOsT ID Actually "tin" is Zinn in German (pronounced: tseenn), but "tin" in Dutch too. Its Latin name is "stannum".
+CoolKoon no, you just say tin in Dutch
That chiming sound was the most unexpected thing I've seen in years
Especially given that you should have heard it, not seen it. Pretty unexpected, and impressive indeed.
Woah you saw it?
2:23 Now that is straight up a game sound effect right there
Sounds like the wispmother from skyrim
It sounds like minecraft when u pickup xp
dude how do you have grass
He lives at a _house_
He always waters his lawn before starting
ikr
it's mutant grass.
Its fake lol :)
somehow i thought the chiming was the most interesting part..
That's because it was! I was fascinated. I'll be sure to look that up later.
That was fucking awesome
CUFF, BUT
Same. It was the least expected
In Germany we call that "tin cry" and "tin pest". It happens, because the crystal layering is changing, when Tin gets to cold, below 13°C. He maybe saw this, as the lower part of his tin block turned grey instead of silver-white.
I like how the camera person actually interacts instead of staying quiet
"The remote pouring device" 😂
A string and bucket haha
Excellent experiments, and a big like for the chiming tin
+Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" hi Grant:)

Neat, a reverse leidenfrost effect.
hey
dude I love your vids
I was going to say the same thing
+NightHawkInLight Yep, the same thing has occurred to me when I've gotten to the part where aluminium slid off of the dry ice block too.....
I was looking for this comment, I searhed for it longer than I should.

I really appreciate the attitude of, ‘I’m not really sure why this happens, but let’s try this.’ This channel is so non-pretentious compared to other engineering/science channels on TH-cam. I really appreciate that.
woah!! that chiming noise was actually really unexpected and cool! nice vid :p
before the chiming noise it sounded like the dry ice and tin made a farting sound! 2:18

am i the only one amazed by the tin when it was tinging?
+Naomi Shizuko nope :)
+Naomi Shizuko No, I was amazed too. It was wicked cool.
+ntm4 yeah it was kinda pretty sounding to me. :) Ugh I just realized I said amazing instead of amazed and now I look like an idiot.
The wierd thing is that it's almost melodic, more like wind chimes then random noise.
+Naomi Shizuko you can always edit your comment you know....
EDIT: exactly as I did now :P
Can you guys please make a white noise video with the crackling tin sounds? Its sounds so beautiful

Tbh you need a very high IQ to understand why he is wearing a Rick and Morty T-shirt.

And also, Rick is basically a scientist and Morty is his assistant. It is a common occurence for scientists to have assistants to help the scientists with their work and experimentations.

that chiming is so fucking odd ive never seen anything like it before. good on you for finding that
+Dragon911X thanks, it was pretty neat.
+TheBackyardScientist Probably plane twinning as the tin contracts.
+TheBackyardScientist you should make a video of tin vs dry ice now
It does sound really cool. I'd like to see a video based solely on that and what's going on.
+Dragon911X be quiet you hater. People who act like you are annoying
I think metalic ponds or lakes would be cool for effect in movies or games.

hi ho kermit the scientist here. today kids in "kermit's lab" we'll be experimenting with what happens when you mix saltpeter, charcoal and sulfer together in the oven!
lol!
Hi ho

totally agree
Rei Lea keep it in church
You are the best you went out of your way just to save a cute little lizard
+Alpha Lizard :)
was it you
Are you the lizard?
"OWW... yep I deserved that" XD
Excellent demo guys, not as spectacular as the molten salt in water. And demonstrates the exact opposite reaction, because as you say, they could not mix fast enough to get dramatic.
And using carbon dioxide to make foamy aluminum is routine product, really kool stuff...
2:55 it's like watching the t-1000 melt
i wanted to write the same
Emil C مباراتاليوم
Wa?
YES!! A TERMINATOR FAN!!
Emil C love your pic
So aluminum and dry ice makes a sound like chipmunks talking to each other. Neat.
Or high pitched dwarves. :/
That was very satisfying to watch
Yo the tin making that noise!
Unreal :)
you are downright reckless with your safety in this video... honestly, i couldn't care less if you end up severely injuring yourself, but please try and set a good example for others by treating liquid nitrogen with the respect it deserves.
+GReaperEx Temperature has a lot less to do with the dangers of liquid nitrogen. It has a lot more to do with accidental spillage - which everyone is capable of regardless of how awesome they think they are. The liquid nitrogen is way less viscous than molten metal, so it is much easier to accidentally get places you didn't intend it to. If you're trying to say that he needs to be more safe with molten aluminum too, I wouldn't disagree, but I wouldn't agree if you're trying to imply that molten aluminum is more dangerous simply because its temperature differential from ambient is greater than that of liquid nitrogen.
+GameMechanic.tv Liquid Nitrogen is exactly -273°C. Its not colder, not warmer. It is EXACTLY -273°C
+GameMechanic.tv Agreed, I was cringing every time he touched something with his bare hands.
+Kevin Malone I was most worried about the poor dog wandering around, it's one thing for him to risk his own eyesight/limbs/life but risking the dog's is bordering on criminal. AFAIK US animal welfare laws are fairly strict so it's kinda stupid to have even posted it.
+GameMechanic.tv Glad I'm not the only one to notice. My god he is wreckless with this stuff. Like you, if he knows the risks and does it anyway that's up to him, but making no effort to explain the dangers involved should anyone try this after watching it is downright irresponsible.
Next on BackyardScientist: Find out what happens when i drop my family in molten lava...
Tune in...
白金圭
There will be a lot of popping, fizzing and burning.
Well, it's been almost a year and, no vid of you dropping your family in molten lava.... Why you gotta let us down like that?
I’ll take mine medium rare please
マケネコ no more chores or annoying relatives
This is one of the only “science experiment” channels that actually does science experiments and doesn’t just destroy iPhones.
You have earned yourself a like and a subscriber.
bloody hell, mate. 6 weeks of cleaning up xD
nice video
Still not hotter than my mixtape
Bullshit
+Coin98 jokeshit
Unoriginal shit*
Balls........
If you're talking about the liquid nitrogen then yeah... your mixtape is pretty "hot" compared to it.
could you upload that sound at 2:25 for me to use without you talking ? i'm in love with it !!!
and at 4:08 as well btw
Sound designer spotted! I was actually thinking how melodic it sounds as I was looking through the video and was telling myself I should extract this somehow and sample it for potential music projects haha!
I love that sound. I want a soundtrack of it to just listen to all day. I'd pay a few bucks for an mp3 of chiming tin :D
I'll let you know if I extracted it somehow and got my hands on it, maybe you'll make good music out of it too! xD
+Eyad Saqqa please upload it
That transition at the beginning is under appreciated
Years late, but could you make a video of the tin on top of the dry ice making the chiming? It seems so relaxing.
Next time Molten Salt Vs Liquid Nitrogen. :)
Now that would something explosive
Why is so easy to get dry ice in USA and not easy in Europe? :/
Irydius surprising isn't it? Who would think that knowing how difficult is to buy a gun in the USA
georgina hubbard Actually made me laugh.
georgina hubbard
It's really easy to get dry ice in every country in Europe.
dry ice isnt do dangerous
I love the tins resonance chime 💕
After watching the first pour, I'm assuming the Leidenfrost effect makes the dry ice not really melt much. Although, I don't know if that's correct, because with Leidenfrost, it's usually a cool liquid introduced to a hot surface (water into a hot frypan, for example), whereas it's the opposite in this experiment. However, I believe the effect produced is likely the same; a layer of vapor between the hot liquid and the cold material that prevents direct contact.
Does a reverse Leidenfrost effect have a proper name?
My aim when I pee 4:19
And then the ladies say "AIMING ISN'T HARD TO JUST YOUR PENIS AND AIM"
"ppft" You don't know what it's like Having a penis
Ethan Deng oh my god who the hell cares!
Xeal OMFG YOU DIDNT LIKE THE COMMENT I REALLY WANTED TO KNOW
(sarcasm)
Lol
The chiming is so cool. And soothing!
John Connor: So this other guy: he's a Terminator like you, right?
The Terminator: Not like me. A T-1000, advanced prototype.
John Connor: You mean more advanced than you are?
The Terminator: Yes. A mimetic polyalloy.
John Connor: What the hell does that mean?
The Terminator: Molten Aluminum.
Actually when u think about it, the reaction from liquid nitrogen and molten aluminum is almost like when oil meets water. They always have to be separate, the only difference is the type of matter and how dry ice and molten aluminum has a more explosive and vigorous reaction than oil and water.
Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo satisfiying
It’s dry ice 😑
I love the way liquid metal looks
Like the T1000??
"Oh, look at that. It's like a... OW! Yup, I deserve that." XD XD

That is a great transition
One of your coolest intros😂
Oh, how the entropy increases in the universe!
I like how within 18 seconds of your video, you decide to look at the camera while spilling liquid nitrogen into the dry ice...You're either lucky it didn't spill all over your hand, or really good at holding a scream in.
I love these experiments Damn!!!!!
some cool moments, overall not as exciting as expected, but thumbs up for trying it.
Ah, this is a fun one I just recently explored. The reason the molten Aluminum slides off of the surface of the ice is due to what is called the Leidenfrost Effect. Effectively, the dry ice is creating a buffer of gas between it's solid state and the liquid Aluminum, allowing the metal to float right off of it. And it also explains the volcano effect, where the gas is pushing its way through the molten metal. You can see the same effect if you heat up a pot and drop water droplets into it. The reason they don't instantly vaporize, is due to this same effect. You can actually see the same effect when he pours the liquid nitrogen onto the molten aluminum, how the liquid nitrogen floats around on the surface. Pretty neat stuff.
Love your videos! One of my favorite channels, please don't stop making videos!
Quick question at 4:45, why didnt the glass shadder from the extreme temperature differences going on in it. Super glass? I mean I make some coffee one day try to put it in the freezer it blows up in my face. Just wonding tho
Edit
It broke
2:24 - that sounded pretty neat. Almost sounds like it was a sound that was added into the video. Wish I knew what made it sound like that.
"It started making a chiming sound"

+Amy Allen With a sense of poise and rationality.

the tin sounds are related to the tin cry, which indium also makes! it's really interesting, and it is because of the internal crystals shrinking
Woooow i love this video!!!congratulation !!!!

There so good

This is such a great video keep up the good work
Thanks :)
+TheBackyardScientist at 4:05 it sounded like those little black dust balls from spirited away :3
All this and I’m still thinking about that cute little lizard at the beginning 😍
When molten Antimony cools, the same cool pinging noises occur due to the crystals cooling and breaking and bouncing around. You should check out that phenomenon!
I'm so glad you noticed the lizard. Would've been sad to find it cooked. (But maybe delicious, who knows)
Helloitsme ash Ketchum ? hehe joke get it ash and the pokemon characters name is "ash" Ketchum ...sooo yeah I have no friends
Yea that last part is obvious.
You've done how many experiments like this, yet you're still surprised by the Leidenfrost effect?
Wow!!! That shot from 2:50-3 was a work of art! At one point it was like one of those high speed drop of water into a puddle of water that that one guy patented except it was way cooler because the aluminum was bubbling and popping drops up out of it and back into it! If that makes sense LOL too bad you didn’t make this video before “Terminator 2” came out with T-1000, because you would’ve made millions off of the producers that would have paid you to use your shots in the film!
Love the shirt at the very beginning of the video
3:52 "Try not to cringe challenge"
Senvr11 why?
More like 5:40 😂
Shit I didn't know Kermit the frog made TH-cam videos
The flir is what we use for our surveillance camera system
Explanation for tin chimes.
The tin chimes is caused when Tin undergoes a structure change at ~13 degrees Celcius or ~56 Fahrenheit from beta-tin (cubic structure) to alpha-tin (face center cubic structure-like diamond).
The tin also turns white to grey, and becomes more brittle but harder.
Since the molecules settle into a lower energy state when cooling, the energy stored in the lattice is released as vibrations in the tin.
This results in more heating as well as vibrations that cause the chiming sound, which is similar in frequency to hitting the tin ingot.
Hence the high frequency metallic sound from the rapid cooling of the tin.
